    There's an interesting story of how the movie came to be in the first place: Gareth Evans, a director and cameraman from UK traveled to Indonesia to film documentaries, but he was so fascinated with Iko Uwais' martial skills that he decided to make a full-length movie. I'm so happy they managed to do it.

      Gareth married an Indonesian after meeting her at university. There was no opportunity to make action movies in Wales so they moved to Indonesia where he met the gang. Iko Uwais (Rama) and Andi are both in his first film Merantau which is a very slow and meditative film compared to this one. They also both appeared in The Force Awakens on Han & Chewie's salvager.

      iirc, he was the actual main antagonist in the second film (the actor, not the character). They already made and trained the final fight, I've seen the footage on youtube. But apparently they don't have enough budget to make the movie after all, so they decided to create a much cheaper 'promotional video' to raise budget, and the promo was the movie you just watched. The Mad Dog actor had to portray the villain here, and would be weird if he returned as another character in the actual movie, so they recasted the villain role. And as you said, Mad Dog popularity unpredictably went through the roof, so they created a new character for him to return.

    If you enjoy the action sequences and fight choreography in this film, Raid 2 turns it up to 11. The budget for this movie was only about $1,000,000 and the story that was originally planned had to be rewritten and actually ended up as part of Raid 2 due to the budget constraints for this movie.

    Of course, you MUST watch "The Raid 2: Berandal" (2014) but I also recommend "The Night Comes For Us" (2018) starring Joe Taslim (who played Jaka in "The Raid") as the main protagonist, Iko Uwais (who played Rama in "The Raid"), and Julie Estelle (who will make a big impression on you in "The Raid 2").

    The Raid: Redemption soundtrack/score was composed by Linkin Park's co-vocalist Mike Shinoda, who also serves as producer for the album along with Joseph Trapanese.

      But authentic previous sountrack's version has been more "indie" and I prefer that 1st version instead of later re-imagination with Shinoda. 1st one perfectly fits to the whole harsh tone of the movie.

    I love this movie. The action scenes are so fluid. The little guy with the long hair was the fight coordinator for this and its sequel. Also, the main group of actors in this movie also show up as the raiders in Star Wars Episode 7 who board the Millennium Falcon looking for Han with those weird octopus things. Lastly, this movie gets credited for being the inspiration for “Dredd,” since that movie, while awesome, is pretty much a carbon copy of “The Raid.”

    • @VonPunk
      @VonPunk Před měsícem +8

      I don't know why, 'Dredd' was written in 2007/2008 and filmed in 2010, just unfortunate timing of being released after The Raid.

  • @seanplace2471
    @seanplace2471 Před měsícem +1

    Also, I've seen a lot of comments about the production of this and mentions of the second movie. Another fun fact is that the second movie was actually the first script written, and it was never intended to be a sequel. It was just a standalone crime epic, but the scale of it was too big for people to trust an unproven director with, so Gareth Evans made some slight tweaks, created this barebone setup story to show what he was capable of, and the rest is history. I'm in the minority in that I probably prefer this one over the sequel, but they're both very close and very excellent for me. I'm just a sucker for single location, continuous time movies. And Mad Dog.

    What's even more impressive is that this isn't even the movie they wanted to make. They originally wanted to make a movie called Berandal but couldn't get funding so they made this lower budget film almost like a proof of concept. When it turned out so well they were given funding to make a sequel so the re-jigged the original project they wanted, Berandal to tie in with The Raid and called it The Raid 2

    The Raid movies are just insane batshit crazy, amazing performance from the lead actor who had to learn so much fight choreography. Both your reactions to the wall knife blood scene, balcony back breaker dude and broken door kill guy where exactly what I was expecting :) The only other shocker is this movie is already 13 years old wtf.
