The opening prologue from Romeo & Juliet: "Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life..."etc.

I always thought Brad Sherwood was criminally underrated on the show. The other three weren't exactly prudish (I mean..."come" on) but Brad was never shy with the dirty jokes, which gave him an edge of the other extras as far as having a niche. Greg is very funny, but his bit was always chock full of self-deprecation, which worked, but Colin always did it just as well if not better, so there was a clash there.
Need to mention Jeff Davis, though. While I think Brad brought more to the show and gave it more range, Jeff is generally the consensus best of the 4ths, and that's hard for me to disagree with.

The show was originally a British 1/2 hour comedy show that started in 1988. Ryan & Colin did some episodes in the U.K. Drew's comedy show in the 90's was a 7:00cst/8:00 est anchor for ABC for a long time. ABC needed a show for the 1/2 hour following Drew's show one season and didn't have a sitcom ready, so Drew suggested an American Version of the show for the spring season for TV. You had a fall season, basically Sep. through Dec. and Spring from mid Jan. to Apr. The show was just to be a half season filler. Surprisingly, the show was a hit on it's own, basically giving Drew Carey two half hour shows back to back. Wayne was picked as the 3rd regular because of his ability to also improve songs. Then they had a round robin of the 4th comedian, but Greg Proops and Brad Sherwood were my favorites.

Colin is a Scottish born Canadian and Ryan is a Seattle born Canadian-American who grew up in a suburb of Vancouver, so they both have a similar sense of humour, one being younger than the other. It's very cheeky and sarcastic, but you rarely see it coming. With Drew, you see him about to say something naughty before he even says it and you're waiting for it. With Colin and Ryan, it almost comes out of nowhere. Both of them were in the original UK version of Whose Line and their sense of humour fit with that. Personally, for me, unless it's the uncensored stuff they wouldn't allow on TV, I prefer the UK version. There's a bit where a guy does a full song on the spot about a member of the studio audience, who happens to be a secretary. I'll leave it at that. There's no profanity, but there's no way that ends up on primetime in America. I grew up with British comedy in Canada, so I love that sort of innuendo and double entendre. You don't just say something. That's lazy. You gently allude to it.

Josie Lawrence is British. She was part of the original cast of the British version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? when it started in the late 80’s.
Ryan Styles joined the British Whose line a couple of seasons in (around 1990) and quickly became a regular and favorite. Greg Proops joined briefly before him, and Brad Sherwood would join a couple of seasons later.
Colin Mochrie was tried a few seasons later and didn’t do well to begin with, but luckily was given another shot and became a favorite too. Josie, Ryan, and Colin, along with others who by then had become regulars such as Stephen Fry and Greg Proops until the late 90’s when the popularity of the British show brought it to the U.S. where original host Clive Anderson and original producer Dan Patterson essentially made a continuation. It is at this point that Wayne Brady is seen for the first time in the show.
That lasted for about a season where Patterson, Styles, and Drew Carrey retooled it into the modern version of the show that became more popular.
Early on they went with the British model of rotating most chairs (the British version usually rotated all four chairs, to mixed results) except for Ryan and Colin, but quickly settled to keep Ryan, Colin, and Wayne fixed and rotate the fourth chair.

You would probably like some of the “greatest hits” skits Whose Line did in the 90s. The banter between Colin and Ryan, as well as the amazing musical improv from Wayne (and sometimes others) was fantastic.
Or look up Whose Line Riverdance. That “song styles” skit was awesome!

My great uncle looks just like Ryan. Same face with a big nose, and same exact facial and body mannerisms. It's kinda trippy.

Josie Lawrence! She's an OG member of Whose Line, back when it was still a show on Channel 4 in UK. Before Wayne Brady, she was the one who did the absolute best improv songs in any style. Search "Whose Line UK" with her name and you'll get plenty of examples of how good she is.

If you want to see some good games:
Newsflash: One player (usually Colin although I think Ryan's done one of these as well) goes in front of a greenscreen to do a 'Breaking News' style broadcast, trying to work out the thing they're showing behind him, based off the reactions and questions of the other two players.
Irish Drinking Song: 4 players have to make a song about a subject provided by an audience member. They take it in turns to provide one line per turn.
Greatest Hits: If you want to see Wayne being awesome, this is the game for you. Colin and Ryan provide lead ins to various songs based on whatever the topic is, including the genre of the song. Wayne (and sometimes the fourth player) have to make the song up on the spot to suit the genre... and they usually pull it off incredibly well.

Yep Neil Patrick Harris was a child actor. He starred in the late 1980's early 90's tv show Doogie Howser, M.D. about a genius teenager that was the youngest doctor/surgeon working at a hospital. It was a sort of drama with some comedy....it had a very classic 80's synth show theme song.

He was pretty much synonymous with Doogie Howser at the time. Then he went away for a long while. His career's second act started with a stunt casting in "Harold and Kumar to go White Castle" which got him his gig as Barney on "How I Met Your Mother".
I guess it has been so long now that some younger people think of him as Barney first.

The show was originally British. When the American TV network bought it, they moved it across the pond and brought in an American host, who was not nearly as funny as the previous host, but Americans knew his name, so the network felt that would make people more likely to watch the show.
And yes, Collin and Ryan basically *were* the show. Everyone else was just there so the show would be more than just another comedy duo.

so Colin and Ryan were absolutely the best at this form of improvisation, which is called "short form" because it takes a suggestion and turns it into a joke. Greg always overshadowed the two of them when he was a guest, almost certainly because he had a broader set of life experiences to pull jokes from. Wayne has always been good at setting scenes though, establishing characters and make people laugh through their arcs, which is part of "long form" improv. I ended up studying and practicing long form improv for five or so years because of this show, and it's mostly because Wayne has always been able to take a suggestion and find a logical conclusion before acting out the through-lines to reach that conclusion. it's the foundation of long form - the A to C connection

There was one skit of "scenes from a hat" and Drew picks out..THINGS YOU SAY SAY TO YOUR DOG, BUT NOT YOUR PARTNER. Colin just strolls out looks directly at the camera..and says COME. The whole cast broke up, audience went berserk and I think Drew peed himself a little. I was sooo proud to be a Canadian that day. And standards & practices didn't bleep it or cut it out. ABC at 8pm on a Thurs, let it slide by.

To be fair, if you watch enough Whose Line clips, you'll see Colin and Ryan kiss A LOT 😂 and Ryan and Colin are legit the best, theyve been doing this show for about 30 years.
Fun fact, in a recent interview, Colin has stated that Whose Line has been the highest grossing tv show on ABC and CW, in terms of how much they spend to make it.
Considering they don't hire writers or any other staff, the only expenses for the show are the stage rental, and camera operators. Everything else is improv or audience participation, and they can film like 5 episodes in 3 hours, so it being super cheap to make has made it successful
