  • The Retevis RB17 radios are locked to the first 16 FRS frequencies so you cannot use them with a repeater until you apply this mod to the programming software.

    Finally, I can get my RB17 to communicate with my Midland radios! Thanks! By the way, you can get around downloading Notepad++ by simply copying the settings.ini file into another folder, make the changes, and then copy it back into the RB17 folder.

      Awesome! They are great radios, I am very happy with the 4 that I have. I have them to pass out when needed for events and such. So handy to just toss a radio at someone, even to communicate between vehicles. I tossed one at my step son a week or two ago when he had to drive his vehicle to the shop but he had to drive slowly and I drove behind and we could keep in touch I have a mobile radio in my vehicle. So handy and great range for what they are.

    The process of modifying the setup.ini seems to work with the RT68 also. Thank you!

      So glad I could help 😃 make sure to run the programing software as admin if it doesn't work with just editing the setup file.

    When you did this, did you run into any problems with the radio failing over and over with writing to the radio? I can't get my radio to re-write it just fails after 2%, but it downloads from the radio fine.
    Also, I did exactly as you did with the software you made available, and even though the setup file is edited to list 0 and the freqenable line, it doesn't make editing available. Any idea what else could be going on here?
    Thanks for the video though, was a useful even if it didn't work. Likely something on my end...

      Something to try is to run the software as admin. It's worth a shot.

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I would also try chirp... See if you can write to the radio to change the CTCSS tones. That will help troubleshoot any issues with writing to the radio.

    • @CosmicDuckVideo
      @CosmicDuckVideo Před 7 měsíci

      @@patthesoundguy interestingly, running as admin fixed the issue with the frequencies being editable now, but the software itself still refuses to upload to the radio.
      I checked with chirp too, and chirp says the radio refused programming mode. Or it says failed to recognize radio.

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@CosmicDuckVideo another thing is to try putting the radio into different channels... Some radios will only write when on channel 16 for example.

      @@patthesoundguy thanks for the suggestions, seems nothing has really worked. I might try emailing retevis to see what they have to say about it.

    I have 4 of these radios for work they are great. Have you tried using chirp with them? I don't want to mess it up or I'll be in trouble

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 6 měsíci

      Always read the radio and save the settings as they are and name the file with a clear name before you start trying to program. That way you can simply write to the radio and it's back where it started

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 6 měsíci

      Chirp will not change the the frequencies to anything other than FRS and sets the CTCSS tones. I have four of them as well, they are fantastic radios. They last a week and a half on a charge for me. You can't mess them up, unless you set the frequencies with how I show to a business frequency and then use chirp to change frequencies, it sets it back to FRS frequencies. It doesn't mess it up you would just have to write back over them with the original software again.

    Does this mod also increase range and power for the RB17s??

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 3 měsíci

      Sorry I wish it was that simple... What this mod does is allow you to use frequencies other than FRS 1-16. It also allows the use on repeaters, which I guess if you have a repeater then it would increase the range. Those radios are a solid 2 watts so the range is actually pretty decent. I have one on my belt right now. I have been daily driving them for quite a while where I work on the repeater. They have the best battery life. With light transmitting and receiving all day I get a week and half on a charge.

    Can I make these FRS radios compatible with 134-174MHz (VHF) / 403-470 MHz (UHF ?

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 10 měsíci +1

      They make a VHF version of these radios I think. I have changed these ones to VHF with the software and they would talk to each other but not to other radios like an RT85 or uv5r. Maybe changing the antennas out would help, I didn't have any that fit at the time to try. And you have to pick a band, you can't have some channels in 2m and some in 70cm. But with this mod I do in the video you can go pretty much anywhere in the 70cm band, I use them daily out of FRS and on a licensed frequency. They are a fantastic radio that will last at least a week on a charge, good loud speaker on them too.

    Can this be used with the MURS version

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 2 měsíci +1

      That's a great question... I don't know for sure because I haven't had a set in my hands, but from what I experienced from working with the FRS version they should work because I was able to change my FRS to VHF with some success because I had the software unlocked. But there is no way to know for sure without trying it with the MURS version.

    aint this ilegial? like isnt ther some danger of getting the firefighter channel on accident if u do this or something?
    idk the boefang do this on default but these ones is made to be like toys on the other hand right

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 10 měsíci

      Great question... it's not illegal because I'm entering frequencies that I have a license for. But the reason for the mod is to open the radios up to use them on a repeater which is useful for GMRS repeater use. You cannot transmit on a fire frequency by accident because you would have to program it in and then enable transmit, nothing could happen accidentally, you would only transmit deliberately. Here in my part of Canada the fire radios are 2meter not 70cm so these would not get the fire department. These are legit radios, I have been using one as my daily driver lately on the university campus I work on on the repeater, the battery life is exceptional. I can run them for a week and a half before I have to charge them. I also use them on large audio production gigs. They just happen to be locked to FRS frequencies out of the box. The only feature I wish they had was squelch tail elimination so I wouldn't get the noise at the end of every received transmission. But it's not a big deal.

      neat stuff man gotcha@@patthesoundguy makes sense
      I have little frs radios retrevis rt49b and a pack of motorola talkabout 2watts I wonder if those can also get hacked like these ones

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy  Před 10 měsíci

      The Motorola FRS I'm thinking no because they aren't meant to be computer programmed and the retevis might be doable if they have programming software and you can unlock it like I did for the RB17. The Retevis RT22 are unlocked and can be programmed with Chirp so repeaters and custom 70cm frequencies no problem
