Billy and Stu were based on Leopold and Loeb, who killed a 14 year old boy in the 1920s. I believe Billy was based on Loeb, and Stu on Leopold. In the real case, Loeb was similarly apathetic and more dedicated to the thrill of killing than his lover, and Leopold simply loved Loeb. Leopold and Loeb hatched a plan to commit the "perfect crime." It was not so much the idea of murder that attracted them, but the idea of getting away with murder.
I urge any fan of true crime to research the case. It's an incredibly interesting one.
@jscott23 I wonder if Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt's characters in Murder By Numbers had similar inspiration, but just more contentious/jealous and a lot less playful. Gosling's character seemed to be infatuated with Pitt's character like Stu is with Billy and the desire to get away with a murder drove the pair more than murder itself. Not as good a film as Scream but it was decent, and it was the first thing that came to mind when you shared that case. Creepy.

My favorite part is the movie store. That sinister look Stu had was so creepy you could tell they probably had plans for Randy even for a public place with people around Randy was cornered. For all i could see Stu being in love with Billy (Billy most likely used that) I do think people are taking his campiness as him being gay. He could have definitively killed him during that kitchen scene, aiming for his heart, neck etc but he doesn't.
