- In this episode of The Simpsons Theory, we look at the history and evolution of The Simpsons Couch Gag. From guest animators, and parodies, to crossovers and everything in between.
We look at some of the best couch gags ever such as the Rick and Morty couch gag and the LA-Z Rider Couch Gag. As well as the Circus and the Thanos couch gag.

I mentioned that it would be interesting if the couch gag was the entire final episode, but the show they watch at the end is the first episode. This way the entire series would come full circle.
That would be interesting but probably a little boring if they’re running to their couch for half an hour
Maybe it could be a special based on Hit and run and the last scene could be them returning to their normal lives in the opening then the couch gag would happen and the series would come back full circle
that couch got the most amount of character development in the series

My favourite couch gag is the one where they zoom out from the Simpson’s house and into outer space, which then further zooms out and we see some atoms which is then revealed to be the atoms that make up Homer’s forehead.
Has this been removed on the Disney app? What episode is it, I was just saying the other day I always found that cough gag terrifying but I can't find it anywhere lol

there was one canon couch gag, I forget which one, but it's where the couch is destroyed. In the episode, Homer buys a new one which is infected with bedbugs and starts a bedbug plague in springfield.

I read recently that the live action couch gag was produced by Sky as part of their promotion for the show, which is part of the reason why it's not used in reruns. It was filmed in Orpington, Kent (it definitely has a very British look to it)

I can remember 11 yr old me in the UK wishing for 2006 (when The Simpsons Movie was first advertised) to hurry up and finish so that I could finally get to watch the movie at the cinema. I must have been nowhere near the only one haha.

Weird how the couch gag has become the most talked about part of The Simpsons (Well, in terms of episode content anyway!) The evolution one is my fave.
what's really cray is there was an episode where the painting go damaged and there was a closet full of the paintings of a sail boat.
While I am not a fan of the Post-Movie episodes, I really do appreciate the couch gags for how they have evolved and hiring different animators. I never even heard or seen some of these gags until this video and I love the creativity of them all!!
I always felt that the 500 episode couch gag was a sequel to the 100 episode one. Also, my favorite couch gag is from season 31 where the Simpsons family’s clothes sit on the couch, bu the actual family is shivering from the cold air.

My favourite couch gag is the Homer evolution one. I don't know why but I think it's cool. The Banksy one is also awesome!
My favorite couch gag wasn't even used. I'm season 7 I think it was, Troy McClure was showcasing original Simpson's things that never happened.
When showing some couch gags, there was one where every single character comes out of nowhere and surrounds the family while they're on the ciuch, and everyone else is around them.
The gag at @14:04 was also used when the Simpsons episode was shown on sky one in U.K.

I think my favourite couch gag is the Homer evolution one, no idea why there’s loads that have much more interesting animation and ideas but this one just does something for me
I like how in some of the cgs homer gets either hurt, drowned, or he says he's crazy via therapist like why does he get most of the stuff happen to him

There have been some amazing couchgags over the past few years especially The Treehouse of horror 24 couchgag That was an amazing couchgag from zombie to Alfred Hitchcock to the invisible man to Dracula to the shining to the Tracey ullman show to Godzilla to Alice and wonderland to well horror stories

The LA-Z Rider-couch gag is the greatest ever ^^ The Evolution one is a good second.
My fav couch gag would be when the couch have laser like weapons and are taking out their owners one by one by ether shooting them or eating them and homer runs into a couch shop in order to find refuge only to be berried by them

My favorite is the pixel-art one. It’s got some RPG references and the whole thing was originally animated by a CZcamsr. I don’t know how to describe it without spoiling it, so look up "pixel Simpsons couch gag" and you should be able to find it.

I used to think that couch gags had something to do with the episode so one time I was like ‘This episode will have Sideshow Bob in.’
This was amazing!!! My favourite couch gags are all of the Bill Plympton ones including Your Face, and I also loved the Robot Chicken one, the Disney homage one, and (one that you didn't include) A Silly Simpsony. There was a fan made claymation couch gag a CZcamsr called Lee Hardcastle made which was the most gruesome thing I have ever seen. I don't know if you have seen it but it was really gorifying and bloody. I commented him saying that this would make a great Simpsons Treehouse of Horror opening. Anyway, I really enjoyed this! The LA-Z rider couch gag was my all time favorite
A lot of my favorites were listed in the video, but one was missing. The Minecraft parody intro they did called Simpcraft. Moe showing up as a creeper at the end and blowing up really made it great for me.
My favourite couch gag is also one of the cutest. The Couch wakes up and shaves his 'beard'. He goes and has breakfast with the family of couches before going to the Simpsons house to work and then the Simpsons all sit down on it.
wow damn never heard of all the simpsons die except bart one. Damn that is dark af, legit moved me that he memorialize them with photos on the couch. Need to check that out.

Of the guest animated couch gags, I think Bill Plympton's film noire, and the Don Hertzfeldt one are my favorites. Overall I think Homer Evolution, Homer Universe, and the evergreen classic Monster Couch are my favorite couch gags.

for a treehouse of horror couch gag they should do a squid game bit where the simpsons are doing the honeycomb game and everyone except maggie breaks the honeycomb and gets shot

Bart is a trouble maker, but the scene where he places his familys pictures on the couch with him really says a lot. It's easy to write him off as an evil boy who hates his family, especially Homer, but scenes like this really show that he is just a kid...

The couch gags have been the best part of the show for about 15 years
There was an episode in which a Simpson referred to a couch gag they had done but not yet cleaned up after, implying they know they are on television. The line was something like: “But that’s where we do our couch gags.” I have no idea which episode this is and I cannot remember what it is about. Online searches aren’t helpful and it’s driving me crazy.

Wow, I've seen the live action intro on CZcams since the childhood of both me and CZcams and I've always thought it was just fanmade and not an actual official intro since they never acknowledged it on DVD's and reruns.
Haha, I remember when the first HD intro leaked and half of the opinions whas it was too long. Just because of the couch gag that was like half the sequence, but people didn't seem to get that it was just a one time thing.
And the Don Hertzfeldt couch gag to me is the scariest moment through the whole show. Beats all of the Treehouse of horror. It's just very unsettling and gives me an anxious mood.

The circus couch gag is still my favorite lol, when I first started watching the show as a kid in middle school, they only showed like seasons 11-13 on syndication here and I would watch them every single day, and the syndicated version used this couch gag a couple times to fill space lol. Side note, people today talk about seasons 11 and 12 being some of the worst of the show but they were my introduction to the show and I still think they are hilarious.
