- In our latest Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video we explore the secrets of the briarheart ritual performed by the hagravens upon the forsworn.

Bethesda really dropped the ball by making Red Eagle just a generic Draugr Deathlord boss. Like this is Faolan, the first Briarheart, they should have at least decked my mans out in some unique ancient Reachmen/Nedic weapons and armor instead of just giving him regular old ancient nord gear. Red Eagle had a lot of potential to be a really cool and memorable boss fight and its a shame that the boss fight really didn't live up to the legend of Red Eagle.
I thougt exactly the same. One would never know that this ordinary Draugr is a Briarheart.
I actually stumbled across their encampment. Killed everyone and wondered why I couldn’t throw away his shitty sword.
No reason to think it a unique fight
So true.
@Wazaag Break-head I love playing skyrim just to see what glitchy mess I'll stumble upon. Seeing mammoths falling from the skies, dragon corpses flailing into the air with a simple fireball, enemies getting stuck, bears walking underwater, flying from a giants attack, horses "climbing" mountains, ect ect. Though don't get me wrong it has its very annoying and even game breaking quirks, but all of that is forgiven when I'm able to kill an npc, revive it, and make it beat up its wife/husband. Skyrim will always be my favorite broken game
Red ragle
I'm not a big fan of the Reachmen themselves, but damn do I really like their religion. Sure, its not as complex and intricate as Dunmeri Theology, but the down to earth, "Life is Pain" mentality of it is so refreshing in a fantasy world where Cats climb to the moons to save the earth, stars become knights to slay elves, Perfect Beings seek to end existance to rejoin the gods, and Northmen speak with the voice dragons to free humanity.
While all the other cultures are worried about some existential crisis, the Reachmen are just worried about existing.
I don't know if I'm more excited for Hammerfell or Fudge Muppet covering Hammerfell
High Rock*
Redfall could encompass both regions, so you're both right.. or wrong.
Both are definitely things to get excited about
The more I learn about the Reachmen, the more I can see how Namira would be one of their gods. Such an interesting group, really cool lore. Wish we could've joined them to a greater degree in Skyrim. I would've loved to have been able to put Madanach on the throne of Markarth during the civil war questline.
I love how you've been giving the Reachmen a bit more love lately. They play such a minor role in Skyrim, but have some of the coolest lore associated with them.
The play a bigger role in ESO Dark Heart of Skyrim
I've learned more about the lore of the Reach from Fudgemuppet than any other source.
Fudgemuppet have truly taken on the mantle of Loremasters of Tamriel passed on by Shoddycast.
As the Lady of Scrolls seems to have disappeared into the mists, Fudgemuppet now have emerged as the supreme loremasters for the Elder Scrolls community.
At this rate Im more historically versed in Tamrielic history than I am real world history... I don't regret a thing. 😃
@Tyler Strange now we're talking XD. tho Paarthurnax is a wise Dova, I also have to give credit to the teaching of Sotha Sil's "engine of expression" may your gears spin freely fellow historian of nirn. Lol
I’m probably the same m8.
@@MrBeefy1987 no shame in that. Just goes to show how good world building can really let a game grow fondly in a community's heart. Cheers!
Mate, once I was asked who's the inventor of steam engines, first thing that came up on my mind was "that extinct dwarves"
Right??? I feel the same way, have had that same thought
I never made the connection to Lorkhan, though in retrospect it should have been obvious at the mention of the word “heart”. It’s also very interesting that Neloth the Telvanni Wizard makes the connection between briarhearts and heartstones, which are said to be pieces thrown from Red Mountain, the former resting place of the Heart of Lorkhan. In a a way, they’re the exact same as briarhearts, replacing the heart of a warrior and granting them immense power. Lorkhanic rituals seem rather commonplace.
it does seem to be one of the most common and iconic legends throughout Tamriel, for it to have appeared so frequently.
I do wonder if Nymeria was inspired by Lorkhan having h is heart ripped out to come up with a similar ritual, OR if she was involved in the events of Lorkhan's life somehow. Probably the first, but that was the Dawn Age, who knows?
@@arbiterskiss6692 Look up the lore behind the Dark Heart of Skyrim
After pulling an all nighter, it’s good to lie down listening to this
The ability to become a Briarheart would make for a pretty sick Forsworn build
At least the Briarhearts seem to think so...
"Ulfric's a hero, not a damn criminal", "He used the Thu'um. Shouted those Forsworn from the walls. Then he led a band of Nord warriors in to take the city. Just like Talos himself at the Battle of Old Hroldan, reclaiming the Reach from those heathen natives".
"reclaiming"
"from the natives"
Hang on
but but but.... muh racism
@An Angry Space Marine For the Empire!
@An Angry Space Marine oh that's rich, given Ulfric (and your whole rebellion) is a Thalmor asset.
@@Morec0 Ulfric is only considered an asset for as long as the war drags on, the moment he wins he is a problem, someone clearly didn't read the dossier properly and to add to that anyone who thinks the elves could successfully invade Skyrim is actually retarded
Something interesting I noticed awhile back: there's a possible connection between briarhearts and deathbell. There's a stanza in Red Eagle's Song that goes
"At last he traded his Eagle's heart
To the ravens who covet our power.
They planted the briar seed
That grows from the corpse's flower."
This is a clear reference to the ritual that the Hagravens perform to crate a Brairheat warrior, but what I found interesting is the "corpse's flower." Deathbell flowers are often synonymous with graves and, well, death in the Elder Scrolls, and are said to grow on graves or where blood was shed. They could very well be the "corpse's flower." Not only that, but their shape is very evocative of a briarheart. Perhaps the briarhearts are deathbell seed pods.
If only Bethesda brought this level of polish to gameplay.
Briarhearts are a kind of seed created through corrupted nature magic, crafted by hagravens. In ESO: Wrothgar DLC, it is shown that they are grown from a twisted tree. They have no connection to deathbell. “Death’s flower” could refer to the verb, to flower, which means to bloom or sprout
Initially, I considered the Forsworn savage hippies but after speaking to Madanach and uncovering the dirty secret of the Silver-Blood family, they grew on me. So happy that they are finally getting some love.
And now for something completely different, who makes those glorious, badass thumbnails for the videos?
I only wish freeing him let me have civility with the forsworn but they are still hostile

I'm really hoping for some quests regarding Briarhearts in TES VI, similar to becoming a vampire, maybe we'll get the chance to run around with our own Briarheart
As long as it isn't mandatory. It is nice that I can become a vampire in Skyrim but doesn't have to. I personally isn't a fan of my character becoming a monster.
It is a beautiful day. Two uploads from the land down under. One from Camelworks covering rare creatures. Now one from Fudgemuppet.
The Thalmor wish to know your location.
Last christmas, i gave you my brair heart, but the very next day, you gave it away.
You brew it away
I always thought that Briarhearts could no longer speak. I thought that they just became a hulked out thrall for the Hagravens. I don't play ESO so I did not know you could actually speak with one.
I wish siding with madanoch would of done more. Like them welcoming you into you their camps if wearing the armor or something
Yeah it could've been an other faction doesn't have to be a big massive faction quest line but a good hour or 2 of quality quests would be good enough for me
Faction numbers in skyrim and oblivion is just insulting at this point
You can do more than just siding with Madanach and that's all, bc some camps would be hostile even if you are with Madanach
It's my personal Forsworn Reachmen gameplay that i did just 1 year ago (you need console for a little modifications btw)
First of all, Reachmen are Mixed Bretons and Nords, so hwat you can do is first choose Nord charachter(the physique you want) and then open console, click on your player and put "setrace breton". This will give you a physical nord with recognize people and voice as bretons.
Then , you can personalize if your player would be 2 sword, magic or bow (as you want)
As you can see in the video, go and worship the daedra gods Hircine, Namira and others ( i don't remember but Hircine and Namira are ok)
(OPTIONAL)Once you've done that, going to Markarth and choose a follower (i usually choose the one drunk in the inn bc he is a breton)
Then do the quest related to the prison mine in Markarth (and side with Madanach quiet logic)
THEN, the most important, using the console, again click on your player and put "setfactionrank 00043599 1" and all the forsworn of the reach will consider you as friend.
don't forget to do that on your follower if you have one, or he might get killed.
And the last part ? Well, enjoy the gameplay
Man, I wish the Forsworn in Skyrim were a faction you could talk to instead of just enemies that attack you on sight.
I had never drawn the connection before. Amazing! I have loved the Elder Scrolls universe for decades now. And still there is always more for me to love.
Man, every time I think the Elder Scrolls has some of the best lore of any fictional setting I know of... a video like this comes out to show how it's even cooler than I thought it was.
There are few narrative archetypes more compelling than the "Spirit of Vengeance". Great video Scott!
Another well made video. You guys are killing it!
So this makes the one time I snuck up on one, paralysed him with am arrow, rolled him onto his back and ate the heart out of his chest even scarier
XD
Really great video, Scott. Much appreciated
Another AWESOME lore vid right here, my dude.
This was DEFINITELY interesting, INDEED.
Did you say “I’ll be back to NERD out...” or “NIRN out.”?
Yes.
“Nerd out”
It’s the same outro even when they covered non-Elder Scrolls content before like Fallout.
I have never had the patience to stop and read a book in game so these videos are really interesting, keep it up.
Yeah me too. Other than the lusty / sultry argonian, the 36 lessons, barenziah, and the potema, I never bothered with the books. Just collect and sell them.
A few actually aren't that bad. I am partial to Immortal Blood and Vernaccus and Bourlor.
They way you described Hircine sounds like an excerpt from the Gnostics.
A lot of elder scrolls worldbuilding is based on various branches of mysticism and esotericism including Gnosticism. Makes for a more unique setting in my opinion since some of it can get pretty wild, especially the theosophical stuff with the Akashic records.
"You stole my heart 💔"
Definitely one enemy you wish to date. Muscular and romantic.
I really hope they include reachmen culture in es6. I think there's some potential to do some border hopping from highrock-hammerfell-skyrim. It would also be cool to bring the faction aspects from fallout where actions have consequences with factions and wearing certain gear can turn factions freindly/hostile.
Evening, Scott! This was a fun one.
The Briar Hearts are identical in function to Taproot and Heart Stones. But while the stones originated from Red Mountain, Taproot and Briar Hearts seem to just grow from the ground but they all contain power for imbuing into beings and objects. We still don't know where magic comes from with any certainty but these items all share a common origin - the ground. Is it possible that Lokhan is the source of all magic on Nirn as a result of his power saturating the world from his heart? These heart-shaped items may be a manifestation of magics true origins and a clue that has been staring fans in the face all along.
Well said, but, if Lorkhan is the source of all magic on Nirn then what in oblivion Magnus is doing?
@@Serana_is_so_CUTE Well his title as the god of magic is really quite disingenuous to begin with. The mortal realm was created by the power of many beings and he is credited with being the architect not the craftsman. It's like honouring the designer of a building ignoring the workmen who use their on skills and materials to construct it.
Magnus is already a questionable character with dubious values. You have to ask how an Architect could design something without understanding it's purpose. I find it doubtful that he had no idea it would weaken Et'Ada who worked on the project. For all intents and purposes, Magnus may be Lorkhan by another name and his true history is shrouded in truths and fiction caused by mortal understanding of celestial events.
Would also love to see briar animals, i.e. cave bear briarheart, sabre cat briarheart. They would be good pets for hag ravens or guards for forsworn camps, and would look terrifying
Beautiful, infotainment.
Dope, my guy!
Man i havent played Skyrim in about a year. I wanna buy a switch lite and get it again just to experience it all over again

Loved the video. That being said, Skyrim belongs to the Nords!
Me playing Skyrim for the first time: damn these forsworn are annoying... I hate em
Me now, knowing their lore cause of y'all: THE REACH BELONGS TO THE FORSWORN
Huh, so they're seeing Nemira as an equivalent to The Morrigan. Actually that makes a lot of sense...
most enjoyable to wake up to a lore video

I need more content on Hammerfell.
Anyone can be king in the Reach. No one can be king of the Reach

I always wondered why they didn't put the ribs back. I mean, the doctors put mine back after an open-heart surgery, so I don't see why those hagraven won't weld them back as a courtesy.
They didn't do it because they thought it looked cool

Damn... TESO is really good!
Yeah, Skyrim was shit at keeping the lore strong. Its a great and fun game, but you highlight its biggest weakness. Thanks for fleshing out the lore, aside from a book or two in the game, they just come off as enemies, with little depth.
Nah it's just Bethesda's way of supporting CZcams content creators...
Just as it's their way to support the modding community by releasing their games buggy and full of glitches ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Not a fan of environmental storytelling eh?
@@achristiananarchist2509 if there's no meaningful way for the player to interact with the environment other than killing enemies as they appear then it's not environmental story telling, it's just a sandbox
At least skyrim introduced many people to TES lore.
It seems like they're almost attempting to force their own creation of a shezarrine. Of course without the actual spirit of Lorkhan they're only being able to mimic, but they do end up with their own supernatural champions of man. So maybe there's something to it? Could there be some channeling of the shezarrine mythos within the making of a Briarheart?
ESO made the reachmen SO, FUCKING AWESOME!!!
I wish there was more intractability with the forsworn they aren’t common bandits they have a purpose and shouldn’t attack another Breton in sight
The Saviors Hide must be connected with the briarhearts. A coincidence that the stats would magic resistance and poison resistance.
An interesting take is comparing the Urdric Khajiit compared to the Urdric Reachman in the story of the Heart.
First there is Lorkhaj, the Trickster Cat. He is influenced by the Great Darkness, but not obsessed with it. He then is slain by the other gods in their wrath after they were trapped, yet Namiira stayed in his chest and functioned as his heart, until Azurah removed it, giving rise to Noctra, who was born of his blood. The story of Lorkh, you obviously just gave. But lets look at what happens next for the Khajiit.
Lorkhaj becomes the Moon Beast after his final death, serving as the first Dark Spirit. *Moon Beast.* interesting... and who takes control over as the Lord of Flesh after Lorkh’s death? Hircine, the God of Werewolves. Or, the god of Moon Beasts?
This is probably why Hircine is so important in the Briarheart Ritual. Instead of following the symbolic path of Lorkh’s transformation into Hircine, ala Sheogorath/Jyggalag, or how the IRL Hades was originally just an off shoot of Poseidon
A friend asked me once what the deal was with those Briarhearts.
I said: "some old hags pulled a dragons dogma on a dude, but instead of putting nothing in there, she shoved a pineapple in his chest."
I don't drink and do lore exposition at the same time anymore...
Just the opening makes me want to play Skyrim
i just need to say, the heart is in the wrong place, it should be center, the actual heart is only slightly to the left because it's left side is larger the the right. The hags just carved his left lung out and put a plant thingy on it's place
I just wish the hearts were placed anatomically correct. Lol, bunch of pectoral hearts
In my opinion, we should have a look on 4th era's "forsworn uprising" term in other way, because in fact, we have two different uprisings - first with Madanach as leader, and second one after his fall, clearly decentralised, with guerilla-like warfare . The thing is that the second uprising is way different compared to first one, and unlike the first one, it's opposing whole social-economic system The Reach has as a hold. First one - with Madanach as a king - was nothing more than replacing Nord rulers with native people and looking for legitimising autonomy within Empire.
It's just my theory, but when we"ll have a look how easily Madanach was crushed, it doesn't look like majority of eastern Reach clans supported his power, at least not after two years of his reign. Worth noticing - he captured Markarth when there were almost no garrison left. There was no imperial legion in Skyrim, that wasn't big deal to get rid of Nords. And still, after two years, he was defeated by Ulfric and his militia, and couldn't prepare even for that. His diplomatic efforts on being recognized by The Empire was nothing but looking for protection and a sign of weakness, when being unable to hold his domain by force and facing lack of loyalty from - as he thought - his "vassals", in this case - other clans. There were two variants of Madanach's relations with other Reachmen clans - he had his troops or loyal people looking after his interests, or he was dependent on their assurances, maybe both. Straight after his defeat, other clans easily took control over whole Reach, except Markarth, in so called "second forsworn uprising". Coincidence? I don't think so. Fall of Markarth, resulted in mentioned "uprising", which, in my opinion, started with getting rid of Madanach's people, and gave the clans an opportunity to pursue their particular interest. Furthermore, the clans were able to not only hold their domains for almost 20 years, but also expanding it and becoming even more potent, even when legion returned to Skyrim, tried to pacify the hold and retake control over main route to Solitude and High Rock. See difference?
It all makes sense when we'd have a look on the cultural background of the Reachmen. Regardless of those living in cities, still a lot of them were following The Old Ways, which was not only religion, but also commune-like social-economic system. Worth noticing, Druadach Redoubt clan did not have hagraven as clan matron. Some of the clans were almost nomadic, with matriarch as "spiritual leader", living thrifty and rejecting overconsumption. Some of the clans were "dedicated" and worshipped various daedric princes - Namira, Hircine, Peryite etc. It varies depending on clan, but it's clear that Madanach was trying to adapt feudal system on his own, and he failed, because hostility toward Nords wasn't caused only by ethnical tensions, but also by cultural and economical factors. It just doesn't matter from which bloodline the ruler is, if most of the things stay the same.
Even the idea of "kingdom of the Reach" in feudal understanding were unpopular among Reachmen, as in their history they were mostly divided, and were uniting only when external threat approached or for conquest purposes (Longhouse Emperors f.e.). They were rather forming decentralised states, on basis of confederated clans with system in which slavery, gravesinging and plunder had decent role. Empire would hardly accept that kind of vassal, so terms of this "autonomy within Empire" had to be unacceptable to most of the clans - and that was the main reason of Madanach's defeat.
Request and hopefully if it wasn't done yet but can y'all do a video on Gaiden Shinji? The first blademaster of the arena .
What a godly enb
I wouldn’t mind a remastered Skyrim if it’s going to be another 60 yrs before we get the next elder scrolls.
So, if I was to create a mod which added the ability to become a briarheart I would give briarhearts abilities such as increased movement speed, increased jump height, increased swing/draw speed, increased destruction spell damage, and increased stamina regeneration along with the ability to loot hearts off of humanoid enemies with a immunity to poison. In order to progress as a Briarheart you'd have to eat the hearts of your enemies which would increase your passive bonuses while granting you new powers and abilities. As for weaknesses I would give Briarhearts a weakness to shock damage, and the need to constantly consume hearts or suffer decreasing attributes and attribute regeneration coming just shy of killing you. Additionally, consuming daedra hearts will provide a much greater progression than humanoid hearts which can be looted from any humanoid creature whether Argonian or Nord.
I would also make a mod for the afflicted, and the soul shriven as well in the same vein as sacrosanct just like with the Briarhearts.
Krillin: you have a briar heart? Where?

Ooh. Lorkhan. TY 💖
*Master Neloth wants to know your location*
Seems like Lorkhan has plenty of counterparts; chiefly, as the Space Spirit to Aka's Time Spirit, as the soul of chaos to Auri-El's soul of stasis, then as the Void-brother of Namira, and then as a quasi-Aedric, imperfect foil to Boethiah, both being trickster gods but with Lorkhan betraying Auri-El to compromise, opting for a more balanced endeavor of stasis/chaos rather than pure either/or, while Boethiah betrays for a solely chaotic purpose.
Will you guys publish a modlist at some point?
Y'all should make a build kinda like the Dagon's Disciple build except he worships molag bal. it's a vampire that. uses illusion spells, necromancy, vampire magic, or maybe some kind of modded control to gain total control over his enemies and make them fight for him. these spells are dual-wielded with the mace of molag bal. it would allow for one of the most truly evil roleplaying experiences of any build because it is designed to embody the god of dominion.

a Briarheart guide to being a zombie but not a zombie! zombie!
If Briarhearts are their best then they truly suck. No matter the difficulty I played on Briarhearts were never a challenge, now those damn Hagravens making my game crash from neverending explosions and their fuckin wizards leaving me looking like an icicle pin cushion and moving slower than molasses they are a challenge.
It was the opposite for me. I guess because I played as a mage. Hagravens on legendary are cake to neutralize. Brairheats end me in one to two hits on master if I miss a spell.
Lore never equals gameplay, especially in Skyrim. Just look at Red Eagle, he’s this Legendary warrior whom everyone feared and was a conduit of vengeance. Slayed countless men and had a flaming sword that matched his status. And what is he in game? Either a regular Dragur deathlord or a dragon priest... so much for the “legend”
I honestly never noticed them
Bethesda: so thats how the forsworn are.. interesting...
KALI MA!!! KALI MAAAA!!!
Can they cover the heart? Like a small steel plate or even bandages? Or is that a nah?
There should be a briar heart mod.... Where u can transform into one!
I'm not sure if this has been asked and answered, or you have a video for it. But how did you get your skyrim to look like that?
Wish the forsworn/reachmen were a faction you could actually support, instead of just backing them in Marcarth. They have a much more sympathetic cause than the Empire or the stormcloaks. Sure, they make deals with the daedra for supernatural power... But honestly, what dragonborn doesn't
So if we find the heart of Lorkhan should it not have been destroyed, can the same ritual be used to put it in the Dragonborn? What would happen? Does it revive Shor?
I always read "forsworn" as "forest worm"
