  • The painting we create today is a busy urban scene but it is organized around contrast and a center of interest
    In this painting we develop the idea which began with a painting on location in New York City. The painting was built around The Maritime Monument in Columbus Circle - the gateway to Central Park. The design is built around the hustle and bustle of pedestrians in front of the monument. Food carts, Dog walkers, and workers converge to create the energy of the New York Streets We use graded washes to create luminosity in the shadows, we simplify the background to a few shapes and they to give them feeling with brushwork
    we use figures through out the scene to create the fun of NYC

    Working with figures
    Creating luminosity in the shadows
    Challenges

    So glad I “dropped “ in. The forethought and then the execution... lots to think about and then enjoy. Thanks again.

    Really excellent! What I loved was how you composed this painting, the dark foreground pulls you into the main subject and the background substantiates the subject more into the viewer’s eyes. A true marvel in composition!

    What a great demo! Really enjoyed this one, Thank you so much, I love how things look a bit strange half way through but how it all comes together beautifully towards the end! And the final artwork is just fantastic, I absolutely love your loose and highly expressive style, bravo!👏👏

      Thank you Ernesto - this is a place I have come to know through many paintings - I notice now I can be more expressive with the media

    Thank you Gary. Washington square by any chance? Today I learned two things: THINK about every brushstroke, about what I want to see before I move in. Very timely as I’m in the middle of a landscape. Secondly, the 'blob people' . Your blobs seem to miraculously turn into people walking, selling pretzels etc. I must try it out. The dogs were amazing, as I thought the first shape was no way going to be a dog. It was.
    I was given a book on J.S. Sargent for Xmas - I see the inspiration in every painting you do.

      Barbara - Thanks for the kind words The blob technique is a great way to place groups of figures :)- this is Columbus Circle by the way - the west entrance to the park

    Why didn’t spraying water across everything cause blooms?

    • @denisefalbo791
      @denisefalbo791 Před 3 lety

      My guess: It is done when the surface is still very moist. Can't do it once it has lost the shine. If it is merely glossy you'd get blooms.
