Advancing with Watercolor: Technique - Graded Washes

  • In this demonstration I make wide use of the graded wash to communicate the qualities of morning light falling on the Campo at San Margarita in Venice. In doing the first washes I set up the transition in the sky, buildings and foreground. Then in the second wash I start to create the shadows falling off the buildings. The gradual change in the graded wash is helping to create the effect of light moving across the sky and buildings as well as light bouncing back up into the buildings.

Great tutorial, Gary. I glean good tips from each one I watch. The angled, graded wash to depict light is lovely. I found how you achieved it interesting. Just loosely dropping in color, allowing it to paint itself. It stands out to me that you know how you're going to handle washes before applying them, highlighting the importance of value studies. I struggle with those planning stages. I fear studies because I end up married to them and can't allow the "finished" piece a life of its own. But you've convinced me to go do some value studies!

    • @GaryTuckerArtist

Great comments I’m glad that you appreciated the angled aspect of the graded wash - there is a certain amount of knowing what’s going to happen, always a few surprises, and I try to make the most of those too. I find the studies prepare me for all of that.

I favour raw sienna over yellow ochre. I find, like ochre it doesn't turn green with the addition of blue. Also, it has the added advantage (when dry) of allowing any added colour to be lifted easier. love the simplicity and the ultimate effect. I always find myself trying to add too much detail in the figures. Thank you for this window into your methods and technique.
Off now to view another of your paintings.

Lovely painting and excellent lesson! May I ask, when you paint the details of buildings, transitioning from the light into the shadows, do you keep the same paint value in your brush as before? In other words, do the subtle differences come strictly from the darker wash being beneath the windows and doors, or do you also use a darker paint in your brush to paint them?
I guess I could just try it myself, but thought I'd ask.

    • @GaryTuckerArtist

Thx for the kind words and I smile to read your message:)
About figures I recommend a couple of things one is to carry a sketchbook in the field and draw fugues when you can
Two is a life drawing class where you will learn more about capturing the essence of the pose...
3 is to sketch small figures with a brush to bring that essence to watercolor..give yourself time and you we be able to paint the figures as you wish...unfortunately no shortcuts ;)

    Hi Gary
I really like this. Firstly you get a gold star for saying "graded" rather than the stupid and wrong "gradated" :-)
I would have liked to hear a few words about the design - you sliced a portrait out of a bigger landscape scene and added in figures from a separate photo - would be good to hear the thought process behind that.
Lastly I was intrigued by the sloping butchers tray palette - is that your usual setup? I don't like wells of paint myself so I might try that.
    Keep up the great work.
    Andrew

    • @GaryTuckerArtist
      @GaryTuckerArtist  Před 4 lety

Thx Andrew - I did not dwell on the design on this one but was I using a Z as my compositional stem to take you up into the painting first to the. figures and then to the cupola. The big subject however was the graded wash which itself creates a movement - up and down - towards the figures. The figures were the main focus for me and looking for postures that expressed their animated character was important also...the palette position was born out of necessity :) - a great way to illustrate the viscosity of the paint. I have come to like it
