  • This video was done to support my class which met on Location in Bellagio and Venice Italy over 2 weeks in September . I this small series I present paintings done based on sketches or paintings done in the field. I will address common problems the watercolorist faces while working in Plein Air . Some of these are - what makes a good subject, how to work with shadows and changing light, architecture and more...
In each video I will address some of the challenges with working on site as well a specific challenges in design and watercolor technique. Along the way I hope you experience the same thrill of working under an open sky that we did.
In this video I demonstrate some techniques useful in painting a changing light by capturing the play of shadows upon buildings.

This idea of yours, of making the, rather dark, shadows transparent by carving into them with darker, structural elements, like doors and windows, is gobsmacking. Thanks a million.

Gobsmacking! I must find a way to use this word in a future video:)

You're a watercolor genius! I try hard to not make those perfect shapes but I guess there's years of unlearning to happen.

Great demonstration, great tips, great thoughts. Loved your wise, encouraging words: "if you don't know exactly what you're doing, pretend that you do..." I can see how that really helps.

Thank you Gary for post the demonstration to audience. I did tonal study, black and white to familiar your subject and watched few times than I did colour one.Your video always like learning courses help me how to handle the tonal value and watercolour consistency, that showed up by your brushwork and your shadow ply.

Thank you I found this particularly inspiring as well as daunting -loose painting is more difficult for me. Your plein air in Italy was good to watch too. Looking forward to seeing the Venice videos too -I live very nearby.
I have a photo buildings of Uzes in Provence with lots of shadows. I should try it. Thanks again.
