  • This is a video done as a supplement to a watercolor class taught by Gary Tucker in Newburyport MA...
In this demo I try to show how we employ wet into wet and dry into wet technique to create soft edges. These soft edges combined with rough and hard edges help us to create a focal point in our painting as well as to give us the sensation of a rainy s day.
I use arches 140lb rough paper and bigger mop brushes to help this effect
I have previously created a video demonstrating 4 ways the water-colorist uses edges and how each is a different technique

Here in the Pacific Northwest we have a lot of rain, but maybe because it's not storm type of rain, the figures don't typically have a bright shiny area on their shoulders and heads, but it does make a good definition for the figures

I have been painting now about 2 years and following several watorcolor channels here. Maybe I am able to take an advantage of your channel 😁 Greetings from Finland❤️

I have been there. Was it Paris, Madrid, Florence? That is the essence of this piece. It evoked so much emotion. I got lost in the experience of memory. I need to watch again for your approach and technique. Thank you very much.

Choosing to stop and learn from those whose paintings most excite me. Your wet on wet, muzy-kind of painting style is just what draws me in and makes me want to really apply myself. I've watched many of your videos. The ones where you are talking and explaining are the ones that I watch all the way through. Even though I love the painting, if there's no connection with the artist (speaking/teaching) I find it hard to watch very long... Thank you so much for putting this content online. Especially during these times, you are a life-send. 💖 I've subscribed and will get notifications... One day, I hope to be able to join you for a paint-out in person. Paint on!! ;)

Can I suggest, the umbrella needs the pole that the people are holding come across a shoulder in an opaque silver/grey, I feel it needs to be anchored to the carrier?
I'm no pro, not even good enough to be a beginner, but that's the thing that sticks out to me as a solution.
Regardless, keep up the great instructional videos.

thank you for another great lesson. Why did you decide to leave out the hanging baskets and colorful flowery plants? Do you consider that would have been in conflict with the rainy feel of the painting or just to simplify the painting?

Thank you, Gary for this really expressive tutorial on wet on wet watercolour painting.
I have a question about the colors you added to the figures.
Was it gouache you used for this and the other highlights?

  • @annmacbride3100

I noticed you do your figures dark..then add color. Is the color you add on the figures gouache? I know the white is at the end is. I just wonder how the color is so opaque on the dark figures.

Actually no guache - all transparent watercolor - but right out of the tube it’s quite opaque- I like the Holbein w/c titanium white

it looks nice but i think that the figures cast shadows are to harsh considering the pavement is supposed to be wet

Hi Janet! don't you think this is what separate's all the artists? we don't want Gary's work to look like Joseph's or
Alvaro and visa versa! we all see and feel things a little different. cheers.

IN OTHER WORDS , INSTEAD OF JUST A TREE HERE
    OR THERE , YOUR DOING LIKE "" A GROVE OF TREE'S "" ,
INDICATIONALLY , NOT INDIVIDUALLY ,. YES JUST
A RENDITION OF A WINDOW , A LITTLE HERE AND
THERE , NOT SO MUCH A SERIOUS APPLICATION , BUT
INDICATIONS , FOR MORE REALISM DUE TO REFLECTIVE
LIGHT AND GLARE FROM THE CLOUD BASE , ❤️
