While I am hoping that Bethesda gets their crap together, I hold no expectations of them doing that. It is gonna sell no matter what, so they will probably just pull a 76 again. Besides, their games have always been buggy trash fires with charm, just missing the charm in the last several years.

I feel like the NES was the real pack in title when speaking about Super Mario. The game sold the console, not the other way around.
Actually, Rob the Robot did that: Mario just took all the credit because it also came with the system and was fun af. Seriously, look up the history of Rob and the NES because it is so interesting. Video Games were almost dead in the west and they marketed the NES strategically as basically "a robot toy that came with a game console".

I’d say Rob brought the system to the market but Super Mario Bros. launched the NES to the mainstream (while also bringing the home console back from the dead).

Not necessarily. Nintendo approached the market with caution and showed us a unique and new console that was far different than earlier consoles. The launch games were unique and the games were far more complex than Atari games. While Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt were important games, the console with the unique controller and build interested many. Sega's Master System also helped too and so both definitely saved the industry. Unfortunately though, I feel that the industry has been lackluster for a long time. Most games these days are just boring and unoriginal to me.

i have to admit tho that i actually wanted to buy wii play from the start even before i found out about the wii controller but the controller was the reason it was the first game i bought instead of buying the games much higher up in my priority list before that (some of which i never ended up buying afterall in the end) since i intended to buy a second wii remote to play 2 plaxer witj my brother before buying a second game (wii sports bundle console here) and yes indeed the remotes weren’t sold separately and this 99CHF bundle was the only way to get a second remote back then (two birds with one stone i guess?) but my bro constantly made fun of me for buying a „crappy game just for the controller“ when in fact it turned out to be my favorite and most played wii game (tho i have to admit that spot would’ve gone to super smash bros brawl if it wasn’t for the fact that our game cube copy of super smash bros meele working on the wii esp since our game cube was broken at that point in time)

There needs to be a Minecraft x Tetris crossover where you can build structures with Tetris Blocks. Like imagine playing Minecraft but Tetris blocks start floating down from the sky, and you use that to build stuff.
Until you realize that the "franchise" is a puzzle game that takes 30 seconds to learn from 1984. Imagine having your open world, sandbox, single and multiplayer game released on every conceivable console ever barely sell more copies than a franchise about stacking shapes.

I think what also helped Skyrim sell was how the game had plenty of memable moments and in 2011 memes really hit the mainstream audience and also let's plays where huge that year.

Nah, Minecraft is great. It deserves those sales figures. The fan base isn’t always brilliant, but that’s normally just the kids. Look at the subreddit, it’s all people who really care about the game, enjoy it, and are not cancer. Even some children play the game normally, like I did years ago.
It's the bomb tbh. The only survival type game I really like, because building cool stuff is a great reward for exploring

Yeah, I never really played on survival mode, I just really like building stuff. It reminds me of a less complicated version of the program Sketch-Up, which is also really fun to play with, I actually made a model of a gingerbread house on it and it looked fairly similar, I didn't know how to add more details.
Minecraft gets bad rep because some of the fanbase can be really cancerous. But if you look past that it's a really good game.
Minecraft will always be a part of my childhood and, although I shouldn't be, I'm nostalgic for it. And while the fanbase has some (quite a lot) of bad people, that ignores most of the amazing community that I was with when I played the game.
That said, if some people could just leave the game forever, it would be appreciated.

But if we do consider small rules changes to be okay, and it's just that the core rules of the game it builds on has to be the same. Then what about chess games? I guess those haven't sold good enough. Okay, but add together every single release of EA's FIFA, Konami's PES and every other football game released ever, which follows the same core ruleset of football. How many copies is that?

My family actually won a free Wii bundled with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, during an elementary school harvest festival. That game definitely has a special place in my heart.

Funny enough, the only form of hardware since 1989 that doesn't have a version of Tetris is the one and only *Wii U.* Maybe if there was a Tetris in that failure it may help sell more units.
