My husband brought home a DX7 II to work on. Our toddler loved that thing. One day it quit working. My son turned 13 this year and asked if he and Dad could tinker with it to get it going again. They did. Suddenly I hear "Jump" chords coming from the playroom. They got it working again! My son is so excited! He only ever wants to listen to 70's and 80's music. Soon I'm going to introduce him to my favorite band - Rush. Thanks for this video!

Some of the best 80’s synth bands never used a DX7… the sparkling, ultra-clean digital sounds would not have suited OMD for example, who preferred the Roland’s, Prophet 5, Korg, etc… and incorporated sampling with Emulators and Fairlight later.

I have the free Dexed VST on my PC (which is excellent), but I'm very nostalgic for the real thing.
I owned a DX7 II D in the early 2000s, wonderful keyboard with the ability to play two patches at the same time.
But I've never owned the MK1. I love the warm grungy sound of the MK1, the MK2 was much cleaner (and Dexed cleaner again, but it does have a grungy DX7 MK1 mode which is close to the real thing).
I also have the excellent KQDixie app on my iPad, which has a great interference and is DX7 compatible.
But if just like to own a MK1, they're special, not just because of the sound, but the look of the thing, I just love that dark brown color, the 80s aqua colored buttons. It just looks so professional, but also presses all the nostalgia buttons in me.

Deeply regret selling DX7. Waited on a list for 3 months when it first came out to get mine. Later got the E! upgrade which was also fab. Played it for 20 years + and sold it. I miss the action of the keyboard - light and fast and sensitive and of course the sounds…

Решает не инструмент, а правильно подобранная партия, а в данном случае очень вкусно и грамотно, и сыграно и подобрано. А еще и записано достаточно качественно.

With the Grey Matter Response upgrade, the DX-7 was even better with improved chorus and tonal richness as well as more patch memory. It took a great keyboard and made it even better.

what is the Grey Matter Response upgrade?

    • @paulsylvester1394

@@NicolasMelisIt was a board and an EEPROM you could add which gave you tons more patch storage and also allowed you to double up notes on one key press where the two tones could be off just a bit to generate a richer or chorus sound. The more patches was really great. You did have to solder some wires on some of the chips but they were 16 pin dips and easy to attach to.

It is said that most songs used the factory patches of the dx7 because it's very cumbersome to program

We sure the first EP sound is from that DX7? Sounds more like its been taken from the Tyros or Genoa etc - I owned a DX7 and I remember it sounded like the Billy Ocean track

Part of the DX7 magic is the way it responds to your fingers and hands... the keybed is fantastic. If you've played one, you know.... The midi velocity of 0 to 100 vs the 0 to 127 is the only shame of this wonderful instrument.

(1:36) I think Sergio did play a real Fender Rhodes electric piano for that song. regardless of that you have very good handiwork. I had a DX7 many years ago but had I to sell it. I miss it and would love to buy me one of the newer versions of it, I think they called the DX7II FD
