  • @RoyChartier
    @RoyChartier Před 2 lety +1

    Why do people even attempt to do analog sounds on an FM synth? They sound NOTHING like analog strings, bass, pads, fx, etc. The DX-7 is capable of so much sonic goodness...what is the point o trying to make it do something it not only was not designed to do, but can't do well, at all.

    • @rm-studios
      @rm-studios  Před 2 lety +4

      Short answer: given how much overused and ubiquitous can be analog sounds nowadays, the process of exploring that ballpark using a different synthesis method can lead to some interesting results, surely not always authentic, but in many cases sounding like a different take on the classics. Then it’s a matter of taste, and luckily tastes are personal :)
      The purpose of my set is to share a collection of FM-generated sounds i programmed and i would use in modern contexts, not to demonstrate that FM is better in making analog sounds than analog synths :D

    amazing playing, i couldn't make the 21. clavinet sound cool to save my life, goes to show what a good musician can do with just about anything
    that one sounds so FM harsh to me, not really my taste of tone,
    almost all of them are great to me otherwise, but yeah, harshness is the name of the game for FM, right?
    they have some nice metallic clang if you go crazy on the knobs
    it's amazing how those complicated operators can sound like when you drive them right, right?
    it's just that tweaking knobs and the system of self modulation or chain modulation is very hard to grasp in terms of predicting the outcome of things, fm is notorously user unfriendly when compared to your additives and subtractives
    but nothing can clang like FM can even with 3 ops, it's so powerful if you do understand it, but programming them is like is like surgery lol
    i mean, just listen at the best the sega megadrive had to offer in terms of music, things actually made for it, and not just converted with some presets from GEMS because it was ported, i mean the real stuff.
    (that said, sonic and the such also abused the PSG for the high pads sounds, so it's kind of cheating)
    many also suffered from sampling too much so it all sounds bad now
    this is why i prefer mid-80s c64 music over the late stuff or even amiga stuff too, it was way more hardware synth based rather than PCM... the sampling fad hadn't kicked in yet, and those still sound crisp today, wheras the sampled stuff... well memory technology wasn't that far yet so everything had to be downsampled to thrash, it's the actual real synth stuff on the c64 that stands the test of time... not the PCM
    it doesn't even seem to suffer much from the problem most FM patches have, where eitehr the low registers sound nice but they kind of sound very thin and almost as if they're upsampled when going into the highs (like those slap bass patches)
    maybe it's the playing though :)

    • @rm-studios
      @rm-studios  Před rokem

      Thank you Alexander.
      Yes, the first FM row of synths have the edgy tone in the high frequencies you’re referring to. You have some tools programming-wise to tame this thing, but still it’s a part of the character of those machine.
      In later models, namely the SY77/99, there’s a couple of filters that work well to further sculpt the sound and explore different directions.
      I programmed a set also for those machines too. Curious to hear your opinion on that too :)
