My read is it's a reminder on the horrors of war and how it's avoidance is much more important than sticking to their side of the political divide
I saw it on Sunday and I fuuuuuuuuckin loved this movie. The final act had me off the edge of my seat.
The sniper scene gives the answer to the clueless and confused:
The journalist is trying to understand whose side the sniper team is fighting for, and who the opposition in the house is.
Spotter: "No one is giving us orders".
Journalist: "Are you WF?"
Spotter: "You're not listening".
No one is "the good guy". No one is "the bad guy". Everyone stopped listening to or caring about the next person. When that happens, everyone is the enemy.

PS, edit: The militiae in the Hawaiian shirts are meant to emulate the Boogaloo Boys. Like the actors, they wear bright aloha shirts along with tactical gear.
Unlike the film, which does not indicate whose side they are on, the real Boogaloo Boys are commonly associated with the American libertarian right. Some Boogaloo cells are aligned with the White Pride movement. Others are ambiguous or ambivalent with respect to racial politics, and are multiracial in composition. What unites them is hatred of government intrusion of any sort.

In the lexicon of the group, the "Boogaloo" or "Boog" is what they view (some say, aspire to foment) as the inevitable second American Civil War. In online chat groups, the algorithm of which is designed to filter out posts related to anti government speech, they often use the words "Big Igloo" in lieu of the proper name.
To non Americans, the social division in American politics must seem pretty black and white - Red or Blue, MAGA or woke. As the film depicts, the reality is far more nuanced - and thus, potentially far more dangerous.
Many blame (or credit) Mr Trump. To be clear, I despise the man. However, I do understand the appeal of a disruptive figure. His core base, working class white men, have been the whipping boys of both left and right for decades. Mainstream politicians of both parties, and the American media, have failed them spectacularly for many years. While the American Right, once the bulwark of this country's intellectual elite, became the party of anti-intellectualism, mainly, but not exclusively in the form of religious conservatism. Meanwhile, the American Left became the party of coffeehouse, pseudointellectual snobs and quixotic tilters at meaningless windmills - all the while abandoning any true adherence to proper liberalism.
What I don't understand, and probably never will, is the appeal of Trump himself. He is a ridiculous person - incurious, venal, amoral, tacky, and semi-literate at best.
I don't find Monsieur Trudeau to be particularly impressive at all. But you Canadians have thus far not devolved to our state quite yet. All you have to worry about is the secession of Quebec. While that would be a big deal, they've had three hundred years to work on it. One would think it would have happened by now if they were at all serious.

I agree about this being a reflection on the directors responsibility for putting out horrific content packaged as "entertainment"
From a Buddhist perspective there is a notion of Guarding The Sense Gates, which by and large the average consumer does a terrible job at.
Thousands of hours of abuse, violence, harsh language, betrayal, death, destruction etc cannot be good.
Our little ape brains can't quite disbelieve what we are seeing, hence why the movie magic works.
The Jessie Plemons scene highlights all of this. We believe it.
15:22 Look Up Boogaloo Boys 2020. Their unwritten mode of dress was a wide variety of Hawaiian shirts. Maybe it signified individualism.
15:00 The American Civil War was 4 years and it got very dark very fast. Also think of how fast things have spiraled all over North America in a variety of ways recently.
So maybe there was 10 to 15 years of society unraveling before it became a declared war with formal armies.
Also now it occurs to me that the young girl Jessie was from Missouri which highlights how fast things can spiral by virtue of the fact that Missouri is often said to have been the civil war within The Civil War. Evenly split. Guerilla tactics. I knew him in grade school but now were fixin to string him up" was a real thing.
Seen a number of comments call out this group. Totally went over our Canadian heads, and is a great call-out.
I watched a review where someone said the opening scene with the president was obviously trump based on the wake he was making up the speech. I actually thought just as well as you guys that it was clear he wasn't trying to be a particular president. This movie definitely is divisive and also seems to have a very wide range of interpretation probably partially due to the subject matter in general. Also overall I really did get this movie and enjoyed it thoroughly, I can see some of the criticisms but it's really beautiful shot and unlike most things in theaters.
Pretty sure Garland makes a clear choice in how he positions people of color throughout the plot and what end of the brutality they end up on. To me the color saturation was a motif to get you to pay attention to that theme.
Wow, that is worth a rewatch just to watch out for that.

I just wish the third act/end was bigger. For a force to be moving on the capital of the US, it’s just drastically understated. It was way too easy to get to the capital and into the capital. Roads would be blown up and obstructed, buildings collapsed…. Etc. i just wanted to see more chaos I suppose.
I know that they said a lot of the troops left the day before, but even then I don’t think they would have swept the streets to let them walk right up to the capital. Lol
Fair enough. Likely budget related. They still made a good tense sequence given the limited scope, but I do agree it felt the most like a sound-stage of anything in the movie.

They did say the American Forces had basically all surrendered before the move on the capital
I also just got back from the theater. I loved the action, tension-building, etc. I'd recommend it to a friend who also liked stuff like The Last of Us.

Another comment mentioned this. As Canadians, I guess this went right over our heads.
The map was a troll. It was meant to be noncommittal and nonsensical, the red glasses guy kind of brought it in the focus for me. What kind of American are you? Where are you from? People complaining that those two sides would never work together is the point of that scene. You see the map and get offended by it because you are kind of answering the question who are you and where are you from. Who you are with. I loved the movie, but I was also a little sickened and by it.
It definetly left me with a nasty pit in my stomach, but also somehow wanting to watch it again.
I went in prepared for the lack of political context (as if it were set in an alternate universe), but I saw a huge missed opportunity in this film. I don't believe journalists could be objective or apolitical about a war tearing apart their own country. By this time they should've seen & heard enough to have strong opinions re which side started the war (i.e., the bad guys). The "First Casualty of War" effect is corrupting. Journalists become propagandists, dupes, or hypocrites -- they can even turn against each other. Now *that* would've been a road trip!
You don't usually get a whole lot of satire in a good war movie. Apocolapse Now would not be as memorable if it were about the Commies. And that's what this is: a pretty decent war movie. Not the best war movie (I was more devastated after watching Platoon and Saving Private Ryan for instance), but still worth a gander for the novelty of seeing one on American soil. Just the same miserable hell as anywhere else.

I can't wait to watch this movie , I couldn't agree with you more about Alex Garland he's probably my favourite currently working director not named George Miller. The scene in Annihilation where that bear thing does the mimic scream is pure nightmare fuel.
Also last night I watched an indie coming of age drama that while cliché and predictable was still one of the best movies I've seen this year and I couldn't recommend more highly for your personal viewing on a lazy Sunday afternoon called "Snack shack"
Anyway keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to your next video.

Everyone would know not to wear Hawaiian shirts. That is hilarious. There’s a Boogaloo movement out there. Boogaloo Civil War 2. From the gun tube area of the Internet, I think they were a little bit offended bythe Boogs. They complain that the tactics and the kit they rocking, also the firearm portion wasn’t as accurate as they would like. I thought that it was actually more accurate. Anarchist out there with some Amazon gun gear Larping as soldiers. in over their heads a bit. As a pro gun guy, I just want to say that the comment section on CZcams leading up to January 6 was absolutely terrifying. I don’t know if anybody else experience that, but I couldn’t believe the stuff I was reading.
I haven't watched it yet but after this, I think I will. And I promise not to welch

Hey buddy on the left side of the screen, this movie is post people yelling at each other. The arguing with each other is all over. The propaganda and misinformation that we have been consuming for the last 20 to 25 years has taken its toll in the film. Also a humanitarian event and desperation would happen two days after resources stopped moving into your community. If I could give advice to anybody, it would be to change your algorithm. Engage in content that challenges you and before long you will discover that even your favorite creators are misleading you.
This film felt very poorly researched and plotted out and ultimately unfinished and unsatisfying. Grace Randolph was absolutely correct in her analysis.
