When it comes to the Phantasm series, I think the second film is the best one - in the same way Aliens is sometimes preferred over Alien. The first is the moody and creepy one, and the second is the balls-to-the-wall action horror follow-up, with real studio power behind it. I hope you guys check that one out, but the series does kind of meander by the third film (like the Alien franchise again). Iconic score, iconic villain, and In some circles Reggie Bannister enjoys the same level of notoriety as Ash from Evil Dead.
As someone who could also talk about movies for hours, I'm really enjoying these deep dives you guys. Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🎃
After the screening, we may have ordered the 5 film bluray connection… so the chances we check out the rest to atleast do a ranking are very high. Thanks for your insights on the movie, excited to see where it goes when we get to it.
💎👍
I ended up watching Phantasm by way of Burnt Offerings, which is a pretty great supernatural horror movie. While watching Burnt Offerings with my dad, he mentioned in passing that Phantasm also used Dunsmuir House in Oakland, CA, as a shooting location. It was cool to see the same exterior used to add a dream-like quality to another horror film, even if the approach and subgenres were different.
That is super neat. Some good California horror trivia.
As a "Phan," I feel compelled to state that the main reason why the film seems so disjointed is because the first cut was 3 hours long - like you guys said. Coscarelli basically cut it in half for theatrical release, so it's understandable that people would get confused. What he needs to do is release the full 3-hour film and see how it compares. Agree, Coscarelli is a total "Dune" fan.
With all its faults, I still love this movie. It just captures something about childhood innocence and loss, death personified as a tall guy in a suit. And that Hemi-Cuda!!
And the old lady looking like Ozzy Osbourne - never thought of that. Lol!
Release the Coscarelli cut.
If tou feel inclined, Bubba Ho-tep was directed by Don Coscarelli, has phantasm actor cameos, and stars Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley in a nursing home fighting a Mummy
Wow. That is not a sentence I expected to read today. Good heads up.
I love the phantasm movies, grew up on them, first saw them around 12-13 years old at my best friend’s house whose older brother loved 70s horror movies (quite inappropriate now that I’m old enough to realize it lol). Was shocked back when I learned there was a 5th movie was in production, or just finished production, I still haven’t seen it and I’m so mad.
PS. If you think it’s weird and theoretical after the first one the third and especially the fourth one are quite literally out of this world.
Very intriguing! We now have in our possession the complete bluray box set so we will definetly take the journey into the later entries at some point. Phantasm 2 might get a first time viewing tonight for Halloween!
@@greencornerfilm Awesome. I hope you enjoy. My own Halloween comfort movie this year will be In the Mouth of Madness. 😆🤘
Look out for the Toronto water treatment plant doubling for the insane asylum!
Avery is James McAvoy levels of shmexy! Well done, sir!
Doooood I watched through this entire series two or three years ago. Some of them suck, and the final ending was a bit disappointing but such a wild ride. We called the hooded Boogins monsters "warblers" because the captions for the first film always mentioned a "warbling sound".
A a fan, I really wouldn't recommend the sequels. It really is lightning in a bottle. If you must, skip to Oblivion, which works in outtakes from the first film in a fairy clever way.
Heresy, 2 and 3 are a blast, oblivion and ravager aren't the greatest but still have something to offer
