in america, a "candy apple" specifically refers to an apple dipped in just a sugar coating. A toffee apple would be what we'd call a caramel apple. they're very much different. (Personally i think candy apples are vile, but a caramel apple is a delight.)

Toffee apples are just dipped in melted sugar (usually sugar dyed red) - the sugar coating on a UK toffee apple is not typically caramelised.

    • @fossil98
      @fossil98 Před 2 měsíci +10

Im from the uk and those caramel apples look way better. Yeah theyre coated in a hard, barely flavored, usually red sugar (not toffee). This sugar usually breaks off in large shards which makes it impossible to get the apple and sugar in one bite. Usually I eat the entire coating, get sticky hands and face, then the apple tastes worse than a normal apple because you've saturated your taste with sweet already.
This terrible snack has always seemed weird to me.

One of the most refreshing apple drinks I ever had was from a brand called Tymbark. It's a polish juice brand. They have this one that's basically apple juice with mint. When it's room temperature, it's quite unpleasant however when it's cold from having been in the fridge, it's just incredible. The mint really elevates the cold temperatures and makes it so much better.

I see this kind of "one-off" product around from time to time and wonder how they came to be. I can imagine them being a final-year group project on some University's marketing degree course, where a food manufacturer partners with the uni to offer a few thousand litres of a dozen or so surplus drinks, spreads, biscuits, etc that were made in a limited run for some previous promotion.
Each student group gets one of these along with an IP to tie in with and they have to design and market a product that they come up with, along with the packaging and promotional materials like the website.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I bought one before they were reduced to clear because the flavour and the can designed seemed appealing (and it was very slightly cheaper than other drinks I was looking at!). Not refreshing, no particular toffee flavour, too cloying, got about 3/4 through and just couldn't face drinking the rest - coming from someone who hates wasting food. I guess "toffee apples" aren't actually toffee or caramel though, just sugar?
An apple pie flavoured drink might have been better. For some reason I was expecting a cinnamon taste so that was doubly disappointing, though that one's on me!

Is there an Unknown mystery flavor?
A variety of energy drink that helps the sad oompah loompah get through they day?

These kinds of cans are actually available here in France in select stores!
There's this place called "Action" (kind of a dollar store type of place) that has them and there was actually a Wonka one but it was slightly different, this Wonka can was a sparkling Caramel Fudge drink (no apple mentionned).
I did try it and it wasn't bad to be honest, but maybe it's also just the fact that I like trashy sugary food haha!
I'd love to see you try more of these weird sodas like the L.O.L. Surprise drinks or the Pixelade Unicorn and Rainbow flavored ones! Stuff that is absolutely here to market to kids first and then be a drink second.

Oh, fun. Action is a Dutch shop, I think. But we have them here and there in Germany, as well. At least close to the border, where I live. I go there occasionally, although it's a bit of a trip, because their stock is noticeably different from other stores of that kind.
I might pick up some of those cans, if they have them. If you put a carbonated drink like that in a zip lock back, wrap it loosely in a towel and then put it in the freezer, it will usually explode after a couple hours and the result is a kind of snowlike flavored fluff. I do that with energy drinks in summer and it's very tasty. You need something quite sweet and strongly flavored, though. Just Fanta or such isn't as good.

I thought toffee apples were just a different name for caramel apples (like crisps vs chips). But once you suggested it could be tough on your teeth I figured they must be different. I guess its obvious in hindsight that caramel apples are covered in caramel, toffee apples are covered in toffee, and candy apples are covered in candy. 😅

I picked one of these up from Tesco a little while back because of the price too. I thought that it tasted distinctively similar to the Brother’s Toffee Apple cider, I love that so naturally I loved this!
It would be interesting to see what you thought of the cider vs this as a comparison

That website sounds like it's been made by a load of Colin Hunts. That's not rhyming slang (although it may as well be), it's the 'mad' and 'zany' character from The Fast Show.
British people probably know who I'm on about.

Pretty sure iv tried that..wasn't very nice from recollection. Iv recently discovered an alcoholic range of drinks called buzzballz though. Which are pretty much just high alcohol cocktails like espresso martinis or chilli mango. The interesting part about them is the shape of the can which is almost baseball shaped.

I love apple sodas, esp. without sugar. Something bothers me about them, I think you're right about the lack of acidity. The fake sweeteners can make it too sweet and yes, they will taste bitter. I would have bought the whole tray and regret it after my first sip. 🤣
