I just rewatched the David vs Goliath season (knowing that Nick wins) and there were ENTIRE individual challenges where Nick's presence isn't even acknowledged and episodes where he got, at best, 10 minutes of screen time and it honestly makes sense why a lot of these newer winners are seen as unworthy because we really don't see a lot of their gameplays throughout the show and then BAM they just win

I think Nick is one of those players who is too conscious of what he is doing - and therefor he is not entertaining to watch. I think he is probably also someone clever and aware enough to think of the possibility of the production spoiling his plans to switch things up for the sake of making a show, so he moderates himself and gives shallow answers during confessionals. I knew the second I saw him, the second I saw the shape of his smile --- I was like "SLYTHERIN"
Quick note: Anyone who has been saying Rob Cesternino, Boston Rob from All Stars, or Russell should have been in the list, please note that there is a difference between a Villain Edit, and a Decoy Winner Edit. Very rarely do the the players getting Villain Edits go on to win the game, with Richard Hatch, Brian Hiedick, and Cagayan Tony being the few exceptions.
Very true and I agree with you. Usually if someone is a villain the audience doesn't like them and then it's completely understandable why they lost. The decoy winner is generally a person who seems to be well liked enough to be able to win.
This is fair, but Rob C is kind of different from those two - he would have won at FTC but got 3rd with a final 2, whereas the others lost *because* they were villains.
Villain edits usually aren't winners. I thought Matthew was the decoy winner who would outlast Rob (I was right) but people didn't think Jenna was the winner. Most people initially thought Heidi and Jenna were too dumb to win.

God, don't remind me. I was rooting for Kenny so hard and thought he was playing a quietly stellar game and when he got into the limelight I was like "YES FINALLY" and then.. well. :(
I’m so happy someone else has realized Marcus was a contestant on Labor of Love. It’s the most mind blowing thing to me that they didn’t even mention his time on survivor on the show
1. Wigglesworth- Got the hero edit 2. Colby- American Hero edit 3. Lex/ Big Tom- Both were very involved strategically and it seemed like they could easily be the winners 4. Kathy- Really got a great edit of growing into a good strategic player 5. None- Really couldn't think of anyone. Maybe Helen? Shii ann got screen time, but like a winner. 6. Cesternino/Matt- Cesternino got a ton of screen time, but very villain like as well so I included Matt he was portrayed as being the opposite of Rob as a kind hardworker. I thought it was going to come down to these 2 and that Matt may win for not screwing over others. 7. Rupert- Rupert was a big character and got a great edit of being a loyal leader. 8. Boston Rob- It was the Boston Rob show and it seemed like no one was gonna beat him. 9. Twila- The season had a big theme of strong women. Twila got along with the men and it made her more likable than the women who were just picking the men off. Ami was getting setup to look like the villain who Twila beat. 10. Ian- We knew it was gonna be him or Tom and Ian was given quite a bit screen time especially on his friendship with Katie. 11. Rafe- Seemed to be in control and got portrayed as a nice level headed guy. 12. Cirie/Terry- Looked like it was gonna be brains or brawns who was gonna win. 13. Ozzy- Ozzy was portrayed as the jungle boy. What people traditionally thought a survivor player should be. 14. YauMan- Most lovable person on the season. Seemed like with the car deal that Dreamz was gonna keep his word. 15. Amanda- Surely she can beat Courtney who just cruised and Todd who came across as devious right? 16. Amanda/Cirie- It was gonna be 1 of the main 3. Amanda was hyped up by the others to be an unbeatable jury threat and Cirie got a great edit too. 17. Marcus/Kenny- Marcus was absolutely the decoy premerge. Post merge it looked like it was gonna be Kenny who grew so much this season and was the biggest strategic threat in the game. 18. Tyson- Tyson was the true leader of his alliance and people were willing to go to the end with him. It seemed after he picked off Brenden he was setup to win. 19. Russell Hantz- The guy got 90% of the confessionals. Surely the winner isn't gonna be someone who average 1 confessional per episode right? 20. Parvati- Okay Russell is out, but Parvati won challenges, had the flashiest move and overcame the most. Surely she can beat Sandra... 21. Brenda- She was running the show and had her alliance ready to roll. And then she got taken out early... 22. None- C'mon this was Robs season lol 23. Coach- It was absolutely Coach's season to win. He controlled everything. All he had to do was own his game... 24. None- C'mon this was Kim's season lol 25. Malcolm- Malcolm got the screen time and played great. He even had the advantage for the final challenge and a partner willing to go to fire with him. How could he lose? 26. Malcolm- At the merge it was quickly Malcolm's alliance vs Cochran's alliance. It seemed 1 of them was winning based on their screen time. 27. None- I really can't think of anyone who stands out. Maybe Monica, but it seemed clear to me she wasn't going to. 28. Spencer- Underdog edit 29. Jeremy/Josh- The 2 hyped up people going into the merge. 30. Tyler- C'mon Mike ain't winning every challenge and this guy is easily gonna outwit Rodney. 31. Wentworth/Spencer- Wentworth had the underdog edit and Spencer a good edit too. 32. Aubry- Between her screen time and control over the game she seemed like an obvious winner. 33. David- Tons of screen time and control over the game just like Aubry 34. They had almost everyone working for them. Then Tony came in and blindsided Sophie and Sarah never recovered. From then on it seemed like it was gonna be Tony.
Gabon straight out destroyed edgic, Marcus was given an ideal winners edit until the very episode he was booted and then the edgic charts were a complete mess, nobody expected Bob of all people to win
I would have to say their are lots more decoy winners that are even more convincing then some of these: -Christian (I was fully convinced he would win) -Rob C -Russell -Coach (in South Pacific) -Kelley W (I would call her the decoy winner In Cambodia) -Boston Rob -Cirie
I mean Tai was a huge jury threat at the beginning of the game but he became an absolute goat due to his idiotic, nonsensical and emotion based gameplay. He had a clear path to victory with Jason and Scot and then he blew it. He wasted his idol, used his advantage in the dumbest way possible, voted incorrectly 4 times. He was a goat not because of his likability but due to his strategic gameplay.
i was so sad when michelle was picked.. the players that season were vile and dumb and honetsly they held a personal grudge against both aubry and tai...tahts why they voted for Michelle..i have seen that season and i think michelle mostly scatted through the season..the major point where the game chnaged was done both by aubrey and Tai when Tai did not give the idol on aubry's insistence. It was a sad season.
I already knew Adam was the winner going into the season but I also think the edit clearly portrays him as the winner. There's of course the heavy focus on his relationship with his dying mom throughout the entire season, but what I keyed more in on is how heavily they feature him during tribals. After pretty much every vote out, the camera cuts to a reaction shot of Adam, subtly telling us that what he thinks of how the tribal went is the most important perspective and something we should keep in mind. They do the exact same thing with Jeremy on Cambodia, every time he makes a successful hit and a person's torch gets snuffed, we get a closeup reaction shot from him, telling us his importance in the vote out. Though to be fair, I don't think I'd have caught on to that if I hadn't known the winner beforehand (I also knew Jeremy was the winner going into Cambodia, I'm a little behind on my Survivor watchthrough due to issues with accessibility).
I still say Sugar got robbed in Gabon. She made some big moves that got her all the way to the end. I know she had her short comings, but out of the 3 finalists, I think she had the best resume.

@@Captain-Sum.Ting-Wong Sugar was sent to exile island about 5 times, the most in survivor history. It was stated OUT LOUD that she was not liked. And not only was she not liked, but her campmates found her so forgettable, that she did not get a single vote against her throughout her season, and they still sent her to exile every opportunity that they got: telling her that not only is totally forgettable - but that they would like to send her off for days at a time so that they could forget her completely; and they weren't worried about her getting an idol because no one was going to vote for her anyway; and no thought of her as competition, because they knew no one would vote for her to win anyway. And knowing that there was not a chance that she was going to win, she decided to play the game in the benefit of who she thought deserved the million dollars -- the two oldest tribe members; especially bob, who she was probably attached too because her Dad just died. But she ended up playing a brilliant and understated game. It was horrible that the Jury was so jealous of Sugar that they tried to rip her apart or completely ignore her. Sugar not getting a single vote during Final Tribal council was the biggest crime in survivor history; second to her being the first to get voted off in Heroes vs Villains -- I think it was Colby that said "she's too emotional, she'll never last out here." Ignoring the fact that she had been in Gabon for 30+ days, and everyone there had previous experience. I think the real issue here is prejudice. Thinking of Sugar as a thick, dumb blonde, silly pin-up model with a navel tattoo --- and that's probably where you are coming from too, as there was no reason whatsoever to hate her at all.
I considered Kathy on my list but she received too much of a more of a 'wildcard' edit than a winner's edit. But I would still say she could arguably be included.
Yeah, that's the crazy thing. People were like "Chris shouldn't have won! He was voted out already! Rick deserved it!", but the thing is...Rick was voted out literally THE NEXT EPISODE, so it's the EXACT SAME PROBLEM.
@@SpanishFly120 I didn’t really have that much of a problem with Devens because while he WAS voted out and he did come back from the Edge, he didn’t spend a lot of time on the edge compared to Chris, and actually played for most of the season. Also, Rick really got screwed over by the swap in a completely unprecedented way... if literally any player on his swapped tribe is switched for anyone else, he doesn’t get voted out at all. In comparison, Chris gets voted out early because of his own mistake.
I'd argue Jon Misch was a bigger decoy than both Jeremy and Josh combined. His dad backstory, his Ken persona to Jacqueline's Barbie, his goofy humor. Ask Stephen Fishbach he'll say the same.
The show trying to turn Jon into a late-game villain over his apparently ~bougie~ love of wine -a passion he shares with his father, is still so strange to me.
Honestly Jon had a too subtle edit first few episodes in. Keith had the next best edit behind Jeremy and Josh. Jon's edit picked up at the swap but that's misleading. Jon before that was too out balanced by Keith and Missy. More so by Jeremy and Josh.
While true for pre-merge, I'd argue that in Gabon Mattie feels like he was given an underdog winner edit to try and make people try to root for him as the winner only for him to get out in firemaking at final 4

I'm just thinking back to EoE and how much better the edit would've been if Gavin had won cause now we get more stuff at Kama and things with people like Julia, Victoria, and Eric, and all of a sudden the season is about more than one player. It's still possibly a tough sell because of Gavin's primarily social game but we get some more context into his plays and he was never even voted against.
Spencer is my favorite survivor player of all time. He is just such a good player, and is a joy to watch. And he broke my heart twice. Hope to see him in more seasons
Difference between villain and decoy winner edits. Villains generally don't win because the audience understands why they lost because they're always shown as unlikable.
Hmm, I don't know about Marcus. He struck me more as John Carroll 2.0. Both were in a great position to win the game if their alliance held power throughout. But since their place at the top of the pecking order was so obvious, they were big targets. Edit: Now that I think of it, Ami in Vanuatu was in a similar position as well. There may be some others I forgot about.

Spencer's narrative in Cambodia was so stupid. In Cagayan, he was the big socially likable jury threat that absolutely had to go at the final 4. Basically, only Kass didn't like him. It's more like he was too much of a jerk in the second season.

Honestly, if you really look at it, there were small clues in Marcus's edit that he wasn't going to win. The very first clue was when Paloma was voted out, And he did that arrogant tear wipe gesture to taunt her. And then, once his boot episode came along, there was him calling everybody idiots for letting the hidden Immunity Idol float away.
@Kelsey Anderson I think both of those seasons don't really count as decoys because it was fairly obvious that neither one would win solely based on how much the jurors disliked Rob and Russell. They got a lot of air time, but both of them were given the "villain" edit instead of the "winner lol jk" edit.
Gabon may have edited Marcus to seem like the winner, but he made some major mistakes leading up to his elimination. Throwing away an idol, almost voting out Susie the tribal before, and telling Crystal about his plans to vote out Kenny.
I also noticed that Jeff, when first time deliberately addressing survivors, in recent seasons, seems to pick a winners. Example Nick in David vs Goliath, Adam in Millennials vs Gen X. Maybe coincidence, but looks like good topic for another video?
Peridiam did a video about winners edit clues, one of them was when Jeff deliberately singles out a Survivor to talk to at the start of the premiere. It isn’t the winner 100% of the time, but there have been a couple of recent examples like you mentioned

I mean Tai was a huge jury threat at the beginning of the game but he became an absolute goat due to his idiotic, nonsensical and emotion based gameplay. He had a clear path to victory with Jason and Scot and then he blew it. He wasted his idol, used his advantage in the dumbest way possible, voted incorrectly 4 times. He was a goat not because of his likability but due to his strategic gameplay.

i was so sad when michelle was picked.. the players that season were vile and dumb and honetsly they held a personal grudge against both aubry and tai...tahts why they voted for Michelle..i have seen that season and i think michelle mostly scatted through the season..the major point where the game chnaged was done both by aubrey and Tai when Tai did not give the idol on aubry's insistence. It was a sad season.

He may have gotten out too early to be considered one but I'm rewatching BvW and Vytas seemed to get a strong winner's edit until his boot.
Kind of mad he didn’t make it far would have been a good villain
I still think Vytas was one of the best players from BvW. His survival on the swap cemented that for me.

Seriously, Malcolm in Philippines had a decoy winner edit if I ever saw one.
I already knew Adam was the winner going into the season but I also think the edit clearly portrays him as the winner. There's of course the heavy focus on his relationship with his dying mom throughout the entire season, but what I keyed more in on is how heavily they feature him during tribals. After pretty much every vote out, the camera cuts to a reaction shot of Adam, subtly telling us that what he thinks of how the tribal went is the most important perspective and something we should keep in mind. They do the exact same thing with Jeremy on Cambodia, every time he makes a successful hit and a person's torch gets snuffed, we get a closeup reaction shot from him, telling us his importance in the vote out. Though to be fair, I don't think I'd have caught on to that if I hadn't known the winner beforehand (I also knew Jeremy was the winner going into Cambodia, I'm a little behind on my Survivor watchthrough due to issues with accessibility).

I still say Sugar got robbed in Gabon. She made some big moves that got her all the way to the end. I know she had her short comings, but out of the 3 finalists, I think she had the best resume.
Everyone absolutely hated Sugar though. Plus her "moves" were done purely out of emotion and who she felt "deserved" to stay in.

@@Captain-Sum.Ting-Wong Sugar was sent to exile island about 5 times, the most in survivor history.
It was stated OUT LOUD that she was not liked.
And not only was she not liked, but her campmates found her so forgettable, that she did not get a single vote against her throughout her season, and they still sent her to exile every opportunity that they got: telling her that not only is totally forgettable - but that they would like to send her off for days at a time so that they could forget her completely; and they weren't worried about her getting an idol because no one was going to vote for her anyway; and no thought of her as competition, because they knew no one would vote for her to win anyway.
And knowing that there was not a chance that she was going to win, she decided to play the game in the benefit of who she thought deserved the million dollars -- the two oldest tribe members; especially bob, who she was probably attached too because her Dad just died. But she ended up playing a brilliant and understated game.
It was horrible that the Jury was so jealous of Sugar that they tried to rip her apart or completely ignore her.
Sugar not getting a single vote during Final Tribal council was the biggest crime in survivor history; second to her being the first to get voted off in Heroes vs Villains -- I think it was Colby that said "she's too emotional, she'll never last out here." Ignoring the fact that she had been in Gabon for 30+ days, and everyone there had previous experience.
I think the real issue here is prejudice. Thinking of Sugar as a thick, dumb blonde, silly pin-up model with a navel tattoo --- and that's probably where you are coming from too, as there was no reason whatsoever to hate her at all.

I considered Kathy on my list but she received too much of a more of a 'wildcard' edit than a winner's edit. But I would still say she could arguably be included.

Yeah, that's the crazy thing. People were like "Chris shouldn't have won! He was voted out already! Rick deserved it!", but the thing is...Rick was voted out literally THE NEXT EPISODE, so it's the EXACT SAME PROBLEM.
@@SpanishFly120 I didn’t really have that much of a problem with Devens because while he WAS voted out and he did come back from the Edge, he didn’t spend a lot of time on the edge compared to Chris, and actually played for most of the season. Also, Rick really got screwed over by the swap in a completely unprecedented way... if literally any player on his swapped tribe is switched for anyone else, he doesn’t get voted out at all. In comparison, Chris gets voted out early because of his own mistake.
I'd argue Jon Misch was a bigger decoy than both Jeremy and Josh combined. His dad backstory, his Ken persona to Jacqueline's Barbie, his goofy humor. Ask Stephen Fishbach he'll say the same.
The show trying to turn Jon into a late-game villain over his apparently ~bougie~ love of wine -a passion he shares with his father, is still so strange to me.
After the Jeremy blindside, the show went out of its way to paint him as a villain lol.

Honestly Jon had a too subtle edit first few episodes in. Keith had the next best edit behind Jeremy and Josh. Jon's edit picked up at the swap but that's misleading. Jon before that was too out balanced by Keith and Missy. More so by Jeremy and Josh.

The finale reaaally tried to make it seem like he would win when it was pretty obvious based on exit interviews that he wouldn’t
I'm just thinking back to EoE and how much better the edit would've been if Gavin had won cause now we get more stuff at Kama and things with people like Julia, Victoria, and Eric, and all of a sudden the season is about more than one player.
It's still possibly a tough sell because of Gavin's primarily social game but we get some more context into his plays and he was never even voted against.
Spencer is my favorite survivor player of all time. He is just such a good player, and is a joy to watch. And he broke my heart twice. Hope to see him in more seasons

Difference between villain and decoy winner edits. Villains generally don't win because the audience understands why they lost because they're always shown as unlikable.

marcus and charlie are hands down one of my favorite survivor duos even though Gabon was one of my least favorite seasons

Hmm, I don't know about Marcus. He struck me more as John Carroll 2.0. Both were in a great position to win the game if their alliance held power throughout. But since their place at the top of the pecking order was so obvious, they were big targets.
Edit: Now that I think of it, Ami in Vanuatu was in a similar position as well. There may be some others I forgot about.

David was not a decoy winner to me he was like first time Cirie fish out of water growth experience kinda survivor.
I mean, David wins 100% of the time if he makes it to the end, and he nearly did. But yes, he's basically the male Cirie.
Spencer's narrative in Cambodia was so stupid. In Cagayan, he was the big socially likable jury threat that absolutely had to go at the final 4. Basically, only Kass didn't like him. It's more like he was too much of a jerk in the second season.

Honestly, if you really look at it, there were small clues in Marcus's edit that he wasn't going to win. The very first clue was when Paloma was voted out, And he did that arrogant tear wipe gesture to taunt her. And then, once his boot episode came along, there was him calling everybody idiots for letting the hidden Immunity Idol float away.

@Kelsey Anderson I think both of those seasons don't really count as decoys because it was fairly obvious that neither one would win solely based on how much the jurors disliked Rob and Russell. They got a lot of air time, but both of them were given the "villain" edit instead of the "winner lol jk" edit.

Gabon may have edited Marcus to seem like the winner, but he made some major mistakes leading up to his elimination. Throwing away an idol, almost voting out Susie the tribal before, and telling Crystal about his plans to vote out Kenny.

Peridiam did a video about winners edit clues, one of them was when Jeff deliberately singles out a Survivor to talk to at the start of the premiere. It isn’t the winner 100% of the time, but there have been a couple of recent examples like you mentioned
