  • Although he has yet to race an F1 car, 2021 FIA F2 Champion, Oscar Piastri, today extraordinarily rejected the chance to race for Alpine F1 in 2023. In this video, Peter Windsor, speaking live to the Radio RSN 927 Breakfast Show in Melbourne, talks about the events leading up to Piastri's decision; about why Piastri now seems likely to replace his fellow Aussie, Daniel Ricciardo, at McLaren; about why Ricciardo holds the contractual cards - and about how it all might be sorted in the medium-term.

This is why it's great to watch you. I've been looking around social media about this and you're the only one who knew Alpine had missed the deadline to take up Piastri. Which would mean talks of a legal battle are probably wrong because it's pretty cut and dry that Alpine have no case

Well, the observers assume Alpine missed the deadline for the option. Nobody knows for sure. Generally these options expires at the end of July (in France we talk about the 31st of july being the deadline, not the 1st of august), but although it's very likely that it is the case, i don't believe anyone has proof of that yet... so the term "knowing" is a bit strong. That being said, i very much believe as well that Alpine did mess up and missed the deadline, due to too much confidence in Nando's contract extension.

Indy Car and the U.S. would fall in love with Daniel. I've heard this potential partnership mentioned during an Indy Car race broadcast. We have also seen Daniel's affinity for the U.S.. It seems like the move would be a nice reset for his career. The longer your a reserve driver the less likely you are to get a promotion, Oscar should have been on the grid for them in 2021 and instead he was heading into 2023 as test driver. Pete - I’d disagree with the perspective on why Danny left RBR. A combination of RBR clearly favouring one side of the garage despite evidence showing they were pretty evenly matched - the lead up to the incident in Baku in 2018 showed Daniel being quite fair in battling with Max; Honda being a massive unknown going into 2019; Renault being on the up in 2018 with lots of promise going into 2019. It was a fair choice, but a risky one. And the risks proved to be too far. So in retrospect no, Danny should not have left RBR but at the time it was not as silly an idea as it sounds now.

Many people don’t realize how daunting it was for Max to go to a top team in RB midway through a season in 2016 and immediately outshone Ricciardo by winning his 1st race for them and then putting on that absolute masterclass in Brazil in the rain outclassing Ricciardo and even overtaking Rosberg in the dominant Mercedes.
If Ricciardo has to stay at RB another year with Max improving at a rate of knots and probably embarrassing Ricciardo he would never have been able to command such a big salary like he did at Renault and subsequently at McLaren.

I agree - Max would have been the dominant force in the team, however Danny was still better than any other driver RBR have had since in terms of relative pace to Max. Danny had runs on the board as one of the top 3 drivers in F1, and Ferrari and Mercedes seemed hesitant to give him a contract as they already had number 1 drivers n their teams and did not want to rock the boat with them by bringing Danny in. In fairness, based on form and results at the time, Danny should have got the Mercedes seat that went to Bottas or the Ferrari seat that went to Leclerc, and later Sainz. Alonso probably thought they were going to put Piastri in the car for 2023 and Piastri probably thought Alonso was getting the drive. I have no doubt that Mark has had a good look around at Alpine with the extensive testing program that Oscar has had with Alpine. Mark knows what a good team looks like from the inside from his days at Red Bull with Adrian Newey and Christian Horner. Fernando & Mark Webber still remain very good friends. I'm sure he has talked at length with Fernando about the inner workings of the team, he's seen enough to say this is a team in decline and it would be better for your career to be driving elsewhere. And/Or, there appears to be cancerous personalities in management that they are being warned to steer clear of. Individually, Alain Prost, Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri are big losses and they lost all 3 inside of 7 months. And Marcin Budkowski.
Further, I'm not sure how Fernando continues with Alpine at all this season - a handshake over a beer isn't going to fix this. His trust with management is broken beyond repair and I can't help but feel the engineers and mechanic's morale will be at an all-time low.

Greers from Australia, hope your enjoying the summer, also i hope you are observing the glory in progress that is Will Power being a single Pole Position away from equalling Mario for the all-time Indycar record. Indeed, if Im not mistaken, he is also a single Race Win away from equalling Michael Andretti on 42 Race Wins, which is about ten wins shy of Scott Dixon and the all-time Win list.
You saw it was 20 years to get a Mark Webber after Alan Jones, and since 2013, Australia has had drivers for the worlds premier openwheelers ready to go off the production line! Well, Scott Mclaughlin we will put in our basket and claim credit for as an Aussie stateside, but such a fortunate racefannI feel I am to have had Mark, then Dan with his Spa, Monaco and Monza Race Wins, and Will Power with an Indycar Cjampionship followed more importantly with that 2018 Win which fullfilled me just like a Senna win once did. And now we have such potential glory to rejoice upon as Aussie openwheel racefans with the deployment of our next man Piastri.
Dans Monza win...we've been most fortunate racefans to have had Dan, he made his mark and his wins left us elated like Marks did, and like Will Powers. For me this elation was only ever experienced watching Senna victories in highschool (an Ayrton disciple is how I describe the Senna cult workship of my late-teen years)
We have Properly Enjoyed seeing the unreachable glories for Aussie Racecar drivers become reachable in the 35 years as a single-seater Fanatic.* (* there is no in between here, people in Australia mostly dont know, dont care, and dont care to know about the premier single-seat racing catagories of Indy and F1, or, they alternatively are, Fanatics. In all seriousness, you dont watch live F1 races until 2am or watch the Indy 500 get underway at 3am Sydney time and do this without being a Fanatic as the general public describes us to be.

Herta did testing with the McLaren and I think they know the talent gap is probably seismic with all the potential American pilots. If Zak Brown couldn't give the green light on any American driver, that means perhaps definitively they lack the talent and raw pace to be in Formula 1.
There's no current American über driver, let alone prodigy that is going to jump the euros in F2 right now (and this is the thinnest talent pool in F2 in a long time). Apex predators like Sennaesque talents like Lewis and Max are once in a generation and are always hard to find but there are not even any Landos or George Russells in this class. Therefore this all contributes to an overinflation of Oscar Piastri and perhaps even Nick De Vries.
Oscar can be leveraged because of Fernando's absence and the lack of F1 calibre upcoming junior racing talent and Daniel Ricciardo has truly lost it, not being able to drive a non Redbull Newey car out of Q2 in Quali while Lando is up there ahead of George in the Merc and behind Lewis in Q3. They have to get rid of Daniel and the lack of elite youth options means they're going to overpay tremendously for Piastri's real talent in comparison to the grid. I don't know about leaving Red Bull, but I've said something else a million times about Ricciardo: You do not almost single handedly transform Renault's fortunes, by their own admission, and then, when they do as you suggest, prove your correctness in pushing for the changes by taking them back to their first podiums in almost a decade, and, putting in what Martin Brundle said, was, outside of the WDC battle, the drive of season in 2020......then suddenly forget how to be that guy, three months later when you make your McLaren debut.
The McLaren is a dog, with wild front end baked in to the design. Someone who drives it like he stole it, like Norris, who brakes late, hard, and then monsters the thing through a corner, at less speed than a smoother attack would yield, but getting on the gas hard earlier too, well he does not find that front end the end of the world. But for a guy like Ricciardo, who wants front grip, the car to rotate and not understeer, with smoother, earlier braking and higher apex speeds carried through, it is a POS machine, which he cannot have confidence in.
Basically, that is the same as the Renault of 2019. The difference is that Renault then listened to Ricciardo, and worked on making the car better in the ways he needed, and of course, were greatly rewarded for it. Hell, one could even say that if half of Ocon's Hungaroring top step was luck with the weather, then, at least half of the flip side, is the ground work laid by Ricciardo in making them move in the right direction, make key changes, and aiming for certain performance in critical areas of the car.
I do not know what is up with McLaren, though I recall hearing it is basically because they are not willing to take a backwards step, risk their gains compared to their doldrums of the early hybrid era, by changing critical design elements of their car, to address the front end. What they have is better than they have had in years, and so, basically, that front end is baked in, and Ricciardo is being asked to just deal with it.
If Ricciardo's career ends over that, I am cancelling my subscription to F1, and after 40 years, walking away. Sure I am just one person, but it would be the most egregious error in the paddock since Williams chose an experimental steering column to put on Brazilian champions car back in 1994 as far as I am concerned.
Worse, it would be the ultimate dog act for Webber, after being Ricciardo's mentor, after his treatment by the RBR team during the Multi-21 era being in part why Riccardo left when he saw the team crown Verstappen as the way of the future, for him to end Ricciardo's career.
I can only hope that if this is true, it is true because Webber has had Ricciardo's back, too, and indeed, as hard it might be to imagine, Ricciardo also has somewhere to go if McLaren break his contract.
He has NOT lost things. HE IS still the top class driver he has always been. Give him a car he can mold to his needs, that has the front end an F1 car should, and watch him win a whole lot more than just one Grand Prix that season. His leaving F1 would be a travesty. Hopefully, some other team out there can actually see that too.

Idk. Anyone who understands that real drive and competition between two people knows that it can be a very good thing to have a super competitive team mate, even if that means you lose sometimes. Lando will stagnate in this current situation. He's on top of his game atm, the prime if he's ever going to have one. This is also the perfect time for someone to become complacent and lose sight of something bigger, too. You always need competition and McLaren aren't getting that on the grid necessarily. McLaren could defo be fighting higher if it wasn't for Riccardo, not just because his performances aren't quite up to landos level, but also because the lack of inter team competition means lando doesn't excel past this point, and as a knock on consequence, it means the team are less likely to excel past this point.
Daniel Ricciardo is terrible for Lando and you can see that. If Ricciardo was 10 years younger, maybe it would be a different story, but.. Ricciardo just isn't performing, as much as I love the guy. I have my own opinions and I think some of it is psychological. I kinda feel like lando is more emotionally intelligent, despite his lack of age and experience. I think lando has the measure of a more insecure man, so to speak. That's a really complicated convo, especially cause I don't know either of them in real life. But that is how I see it if I'm honest.
They need someone exactly like Piastri, someone decent who has something to prove, someone who completely believes they can beat lando, too. Although I know Riccardo can beat lando, I know he can win races, but I also know he's not up for beating lando. I don't see that in him, honestly, and I think this is how McLaren see it too. I know this is super harsh but it's true.
This person they need is Piastri, or a Verstappen, Leclerc, etc. Lando knows this, McLaren know this. For the sake of making Lando a world champion, they must bring in someone like Piastri who has the talent and that young energy and smarts to actually challenge lando. Lando, whether you like it or not, he is wasting away years being sat next to Ricciardo, and that isn't even Ricciardo's fault either. Maybe just wrong place wrong time, wrong move for him maybe. Maybe Riccardo can be quick, if not quicker. That's not the point. The point is that they don't need an older ego to drive the team, they need two young egos that have that compulsive will to beat each other, cause ultimately, that internally drives the inter team momentum. If they can get a driver pairing as strong as a Hamilton Russel, a Sainz Leclerc, a Sainz Norris even.. they can really drive things forward. Norris Piastri is basically perfect in my mind. McLaren have played it well lol.
