    The person who went on about despair and all its synonyms just shows what a superb writer Hobb is. If you read. a book and feel all the emotions the author intended rather than "meh" that's what good writing is. Worthwhile experiences aren't always pleasant.

    The despair acronyms one was painfully accurate in my opinion. I just kept waiting for good things to happen and for people to stop being !$@& to Fitz, but nothing. Hobb is a great writer, but boy was I mentally exhausted after finishing the first series.

    Can't judge a 16 book series by the first book which I still gave 4 stars to. Not everything is for everyone but hating something because it's popular is kinda silly.

  • @lieslherman
    @lieslherman Před rokem +26

    Gotta be honest, they're a little painful! 🤣 But I totally get it! Everyone comes to books looking for something different, and Hobb's characters and pacing require a particular taste not everyone has-- I'd struggle to recommend it to lots of people. The level of vitriol is intense in some of these, but I also kinda get that... When I begin a super hyped series and don't end up enjoying it, I feel like yelling about it too, lol. How wonderful it is we all are able to find books we are so passionate about though... The variety in the fantasy genre is one of the best things about it.

    I read this when it first came out when I was a teenager and several times since. The book is excellent, as is the entire series. It's a character driven novel so the 'boring' day to day stuff shows how the characters experience life and their fears, hopes, strengths, weaknesses and motivations. I'm surprised at the criticism that nothing happens; there is lots of action in the novel. It can be depressing but there are uplifiting scenes, it is the range which makes the novels so good. Reading it as a middle-aged person I understand that when you are young you do things you later regret. Also, how people are shaped by their circumstances and it is the nature of humans to be flawed. I don't agree with this review and would encourage people to read the book and series.

      Agreed, Fitz makes a lottt of stupid decisions, especially in the first book, but you gotta remember he's an angsty teen. Sure he's been trained in all these skills and he's in the royal family, but a teenager is still a teenager. Everyone does dumb things in their teenage years, it's part of growing. Currently in the middle of book 3, absolutely loving it. This series got me back into enjoying reading after having barely read anything the past 5 years.
      Also, that first review she read seemed like the reader just blew through the books without thinking much about what they were reading, because they wrote that things were unexplained (like the fool, or the skill), but they definitely are explained and/or alluded to heavily throughout the series.

    I can relate to both the lovers and haters of this series. Hobb was my favourite writer for the longest time. I read the series within about 10 years and I always thought this series was like my “adult Harry Potter” bc it was so dear and nostalgic to me.
    BUT when I finished the series I felt the same as that one review that said they felt rage. After 16 books, there was no payoff that I was hoping for, and I was actually upset. I’m all for characters going thru trauma but it felt excessive in this series and in the end it felt torturous to read w/o a payoff at the end.

    I'm ten pages from the end of The Assassins Apprentice. Some of the reviews made me laugh. I agree and also disagree with different parts of what each person said. But I have to say this book has evoked so many feelings and I feel so invested in Fitz, Chade, Burrich, Verity, and especially the puppers. I really like the fool also. I'm curious to see the direction she takes the story. But I really enjoy following a character that doesn't have everything fall into place for them and so far that's why I love this book. (:

    This trilogy was really hard for me to get through. I didn't love book one, but I thought it did a good job of establishing the world that Fitz is living in, however, the level of frustration I felt for this "assassin" who is literally never allowed to assassinate the actual person trying to kill the king was outrageous. I mean, he took an oath to protect the king and they trained him in all these "secret arts" to protect the king and then guess what... the same people says to him... JUST WAIT... so he doesn't get to protect the king!!! I was just so frustrated that I forced myself to finish the trilogy and I know I will eventually get to the others, but I'm taking a break before jumping back in.

  • @gennapohl8079
    @gennapohl8079 Před rokem +6

    I feel like a lot of the frustration people have with this trilogy comes from the fact that they don't understand that the third book isn't the end :b Like yeah, if she stopped there, I probably would have sworn off Robin Hobb forever after, but there are six more Fitz books to read! And the fact that I cried more reading them than pretty much anything else is just a testament to how much she makes you care about this guy, and it makes the moments of triumph even more impactful.

  • @missep1830
    @missep1830 Před rokem +2

    I loved the first book in the series but DNFed the second one because yeah, it was a lot of badness happening to Fitz and I couldn't see any happiness in the book, it was so disappointing because the world, magic, etc in the first book was so good. I disagree with the accusations that it was boring - if anything, it wasn't boring enough! Fitz just couldn't catch a break! It was years and years ago, but I think it was when the dog(?) died(?). I don't quite remember.
    My Dad loved all of them and keeps telling me to read them though! I think I remember it being kind of a political fantasy book, which I do normally love so maybe in a few more years I'll try again...

    I love this series, but can understand where these reviews are coming from. Except the one that said she did poor character development. Characters that are frustrating and that are not necessarily likeable? True. But they are well developed and well written. Regal is mustache twirly and one dimensional. But we only get Fitz's view on him and Fitz also avoids interacting with him and hates him. So, we only get a very limited exposure. And I do have to agree about the strange sex scenes sharing consciousnesses. Yeah, those are really awkward and she does it repeatedly.

    This video makes me feel less alone. I could not finish this book. It’s dreadfully dull but the “romance” is the worst. The trope of “two young people who clearly have something going on but can’t actually speak plainly about it so it falls apart” is excruciating and uninteresting at the same time. I don’t feel guilty about not finishing it at all.

    @FantasyTenshi Před rokem +1

    I can't express how much I love this series. But the reviews are right. Regal is too mustache twirly, it's boring day to day activities from Fitz' perspective which is sometimes frustrating to read and The Fool in the first trilogy seems random, as well. And that's why I love it. XD Nothing is as it seems.
    I would recommend that these people read the Life ship traders. I didn't like those much.

  • @LuvLuke954
    @LuvLuke954 Před měsícem

    Ok. Well I can see why people would not like this book - because it’s not a stand alone. And when Chade says there’s something more to Regal he means that Regal isn’t just surface-level evil but he’s up to a lot more than they know.
    If you want to read a book with this premise and have all the information then action and finally the ending consequences all wrapped up in 500 pages or less than surely this isn’t the book for you. Which is totally understandable. I think there are too many expectations and quick-to-be-expert judges when it comes to entertainment lately. People want it now fast and to the point. These books offer seriously necessary for these days critical thinking.
    You can describe a tree in one word and never understand the life the beauty or complexity of that tree. Personally, I feel more grounded (pardon the pun) if I pay attention to those details. 💚🙌🏼🎶

    @WhatTheFunct Před rokem +1

    So many people I know who thought Fitz was frustrating/insufferable in the Farseer trilogy actually really liked him in Tawny Man. Take that for what you will :) For me, there will never be a better series than the Realm of the Elderlings. The people felt real, the world felt real, and I felt like I was there while I was reading it. The characters were often frustrating, but they always had justification for doing the things they did, even if you didn't agree with it. Probably one of the most powerful scenes I've ever read comes at the beginning of the third book when two characters are arguing. I was siding strongly with one of them, and then when the other character started explaining their side of things, I completely shifted to their side, until I didn't really know who I agreed with anymore, because they both had strong reasons for feeling the way they did. That is beautiful writing and character work to me. I can understand that different people want different things out of their stories, so it's okay if this isn't for everyone, but something not being to your taste doesn't make it bad.
    I think people who don't read primarily for character work and development won't enjoy Hobb's stories, and that's pretty much that. This series is the story of Fitz's life within the overarching view of how he acts as a catalyst (teehee) for change within the Six Duchies and its neighboring kingdoms. It is not intended to be heavily plot-driven. So if you hate the characters, of course you will not enjoy your time reading it. That said, if you enjoy slice of life stories and relatable, realistic characters who will frustrate you into wanting to slap some sense into them while you simultaneously wish you could protect them the same way you would your own family, I think this series is absolutely perfect.
    I know you had issues with the ending of the Liveship Traders trilogy, and I'm bummed that that was enough to stop you from continuing, but I do understand. My one criticism of Hobb is that her endings - especially for villains - can feel quite lackluster given how horrible some of them are. But I still wouldn't trade my time reading this series for anything. No books have ever impacted me the way these did.

    Here's a witty 1-star review: "I love the content but not the way they did not put the name on the spine." Which was for a product too thin to have the name on the spine.
    How about those idiots saying: "It came in damaged. I want a refund." Which was an issue with the shipper not the book.
    A review that speaks volumes about the person who wrote it and posted it: "I have not read it yet, but the author is an idiot."
    Truly brilliant are reviews with no comments. The reviewer is just casually trolling products and clicking some stars on anything and everything.
    But, wen I detest a book, I ignore it. The most scathing reviews I give are for history-oriented books with absolutely wrong data. I want readers to know they are not reading facts but someone's fantasy (or someone's ignorance).

    I must be weird because I loved The Farseer Trilogy and so far like it better than Liveship Trader (though I did really like Ship of Magic). Maybe because I immersion read the series, that helped me attach to the characters more. My issue with Ship of Magic is that Hobb has done a great job of making me hate some characters, but so few of them are likeable. At least I don't feel as invested yet. This was painful. I feel like many of the people who wrote these reviews are not burdened with an overabundance of learning, and that perhaps *reading* some of the stronger reviews will tell them that they are unlikely to enjoy a story so heavily character and theme focused, as even those of us who love it will state openly that it's pacing is sleepy.
    I genuinely think if anyone goes into these books, after stating they've looked at/read 4 and 5 star reviews should know what they're getting into, and only have themselves to blame for going on to read but not enjoy the slow, immersive, subversion of expectations that is Fitz' coming of age.

    I love Fitz and I always will. His whole circumstance and what he was born into, that he had no control over, definitely made him that tortured type of character, I totally get that. But these one star peeps just need to realize fantasy isn’t for everyone. And if they don’t like Fitz or even Robin Hobb as an author… maybe fantasy isn’t for them 😒

      Idk and maybe it’s why I never give them myself, but I always feel like “1 star reviews” even on books I’m meh on are just missing the mark. I don’t think I’ve ever read a one star review that’s not a meme that I’ve ever agreed with or felt validated by. They always feel so exaggerated and dramatic.

    I read this trilogy hoping at some point there would be some awesome pay off let me save you all the trouble there was never any kind of payoff at all much less awesome. Robin Hobb is in really good writer but this was really lame and quite disappointing I finish these books not liking anyone in them especially the protagonist who I thought was a lame ass who should get up and do something

      @@kingofthejungle2894 That question is suprisingly hard to answer, so many things going through my mind I don't know where to start. lol 😅
      If I could name only 2 things it would be Worldbuilding and Storytelling. The world is VERY realized and full of life, the islands, cultures and people are all very unique and imagined. things actually happen in the world that doesn't revolve around the main characters, the world is everchanging and feels very real.
      Storytelling. Oh man I don't even know how to start this one. One Piece is a story that starts off, or at first glace is, very Comedic, goofy, and not serious. But the deeper you go into the story the deeper it gets, Slavery, Racism, Human trafficking, Genocide, etc are all things that the author of this story does NOT shy away from and his writing for these topics are very nuanced and well thought.
      The most common thing you'll hear about this story is the Emotion, you will cry MULTIPLE times-- so many characters have these amazing fleshed out backstories that will make you literally sob, all of the fanbase literally cried over a ship--A SHIP! not gonna spoil how but this author is really good at making you feel for characters.
      another thing is the payoff you get for paying attention. this author is VERY PATIENT, like-- crazy patient with his story, he will literally write a scene and the pay off and forshadowing of that scene will come into play into that story 8-10 years later, I'm not even joking. He has his story planned from the beginning and only makes a few alterations as he goes.
      for instance there has been a mystery about most of the islands in this story spanning 20+ years that most people just overlooked and didn't really want/need an explanation for, but within the last few weeks--like literally I mean WEEKS AGO, we just got an explanation for why those islands are the way the are and it makes SO MUCH SENSE. It's truly crazy to think he planned this payoff for 20+ years and just kept it to himself.
      lol I realized how long this is getting so I'll stop but if you have any questions about the series feel free to ask!

      @@datboi1319 Wow I didn’t expect such a heartfelt response. Thank you so much for taking the time to write all your feelings about this series, I really appreciate it! You sure managed to hype me up. I almost wanna jump right into it, just need to finish „Name of the Wind“, though I am kinda having a difficult time with it haha.
      And you are right, "One Piece" really felt somewhat goofy at times, maybe that’s why I have stopped. I like goofy every now and then, but I guess it didn’t intrigue me enough.
      Still, I kept collecting the omnibus editions up to volume 33 (97-99), waiting for the right time to pick it up again.
      Thank you for your comment, I really enjoyed it. Even though you just posted it, I have already read it multiple times haha

    i don't find the reviews painful but rather ignorant. i will step out on a limb and say that most of these reviewers have read very little fantasy and this was there first foray outside brandon sanderson or stephanie meyer. the first 3 books in the series was made to create a world and to show a decline in noble political theater through a character view. i also noticed that the long winded one had a serious bias against traditional masculinity as well not comprehending that medieval cultures had serious superstitious responses to magic deemed bad he sounded much like a dnd player that started with 5e and then tries to pick up an old edition and is lost. lastly Hobb is not an author that drops every explanation in your lap, you are meant to find out when fitz does and to me that is good story telling.

    Forget Robin Hobb. Her Solider Son trilogy is racist, ableist, and fatphobic in the extreme. She queer baits her entire Fitz and Fool series, but there aren't any queer characters. She's behind the times.
