When I heard that Fitz' story didn't end in Farseer Trilogy and instead there are two trilogies revolving around him, my reaction was: "Wtf leave the poor guy alone!"

I'm really happy you enjoyed this. A lot of people only get into this series in book 2 so if you liked AA, you're good to go! The world and the magic will get deeper. The overall 16-book series demands time and effort but like with WoT I think it's really worth it (I think you'll particularly enjoy Liveship Traders, which is in 3rd person with multiple POVs).
Just prepare to be emotionally destroyed :)
I never understood why people like Fitz’s books more than the Liveships/Dragon books. Those are so much better! Multiple POVs really is the way to go.
I found the live ship traders boring 🤣. I was only there for Kennet and to keep tabs on amber's development.
The nice thing is that the big series is broken up into smaller series which really do stand on their own. The first book may leave loose threads but the first trilogy does not. Yet later it gets woven into an even larger story. And yes, Hobb is really good at making my heart ache in little ways, like three dog deaths in the same book.
Wow! There are sixteen books in this series? I read the first three as they came out and thought that wrapped in up pretty well and never looked for any more after that.
Yep, I only really got invested in the story in the second book! Then I read the whole series (+novella + all short stories + went straight from the last book to rereading Farseer) and Realm of the Elderlings is just my favourite book series now. It has a LOT of flaws, I'm the first one to admit it, but my emotional investment in these characters is so huge that I can mostly ignore everything else.

@TheCoffeeNut711 I do recommend continuing on to royal assassin, but it will be more of the same. Fitz does come into his character a bit more in that one, and the plot really kicks off in that one, but it's a slow start IMO. Robin hobb isn't for everyone, but definitely give it chance.
@TheCoffeeNut711 I see, then liveship traders may be up your ally. It's by robin hobb as well and is set in the same world and has minor spoilers for the farseer trilogy. It doesn't only follow one character, and to give it a bare bones summary it's basically about the Vestrit family trying to deal with their debt issues, and they are a merchant family and do business with their "liveship." By the third book it's really epic in scope. If you liked Hobb's prose but didn't like the day to day life of Fitz thing, you'll greatly enjoy this! I've read alot of fantasy and I'm hard pressed to find a better trilogy then the liveship traders.

@@nosferatum791 I get your disappointment but it helps when you don't take him seriously. Daniel Greene has his ways. You'll get used to it. Been fan of his since 44k subscribers. I saw a lot of throwing, spanking and slicing books and here I am still.
I initially gave Assassin’s Apprentice a three stars and didn’t know if I would continue, but after reading Royal Assassin I was absolutely HOOKED. Now I am on the first book of the Rain Wild Chronicles and Robin Hobb is my favorite author.

The pain really is real! The amount of snot and tears my pillows have had to endure while reading her books is no joke!
See, the amount of pain in the trilogy (and Robin's work in general actually) is what turned me off. It almost got to the point of existential torture porn to me, given how much she delights to put her protagonists through misery. But, unlike most authors, where there is at least some redeeming ending for them, Fitz's trilogy just ended with a terrible, TERRIBLE outcome. I felt so...empty after reading it. For me, it's one of the most frustrating and disappointing trilogies I've ever read, and soured me on Robin's work for years. I read like the first 2 books of the Living Ship series, but it was just more of the same "You are the protagonist, so your life is complete shit", that I stopped reading.
I then tried the new trilogy she made later, that continues off the Assassin's setting, and it's still just more, terrible things.
I just, couldn't take it. I really don't like her writing style at all.

It’s amazing to me the fantasy series that I have ended up loving versus the ones that I thought I would love or that are well-loved by book lovers that just didn’t work out for me. I really didn’t expect to love Hobb’s work, but for some reason it really clicked with me!! Truthfully, that trope of “everything is going wrong and even when something goes right everything goes wrong again” seems to be a common thread in some of the stories I enjoy...really not sure why that is! 😂 Another favorite of mine is Name of the Wind and I feel like that’s a common thread (although I would say Kvothe succeeds a lot more where Fitz fails)
@@steviereads Yeah, I don't have a problem with a protagonist having to struggle, and going through trials and misery, that's what a story with a protagonist does. But there is an upper limit for me, on the crap:good ratio of events that happen to them. And yes to say Fitz doesn't succeed as much as other protags, is a good way to put it. At first I thought "ok well maybe this is just the way things are for Fitz, and the Assassin's books. Maybe her other worlds, it's different? " *read Living Ship* "NOPE! more of the same!" xD And I just had to stop.
Again, I'm fine with protags having to deal with bad things, it's why they are protags. But if you don't really show me how they have overcome those bad things, in a way that made it worth doing, and it's just more horrible stuff on top....I just, feel like I wasted my time reading it. I even hoped it would change with the second Assassin trilogy, but no, it's more of the same. So personally, I've just written off Hobb as a writer that I care to read.
Her quality of work is great, the world and characters are well realized, but the way she treats her characters, leaves a sour taste in my mouth by the end.
@@happyninja42 Not sure how you got that really. I felt very similar to you on Farseer; I loved it, but it hurt me so much I couldn't see myself re-reading it.
I didn't really get that from Liveship or Tawny Man at all. I mean, sure, Liveship has its points of tragedy but nothing near the level of crap Fitz went through in Farseer and thinks work out fine in the end. Likewise, so does Tawny Man, but again, nothing near on the level Fitz went through in Farseer, and the ending has some of the most beautiful happy moments. The end of both is beautiful, and mixes happiness and sorrow (though in my mind it leans more toward the former).
Rain Wild Chronicles is honestly pretty neutral. It's downright rainbows and sunshine compared to the earlier series, and it is worth a read for the ending. Fitz and the
Fool will not make sense without finishing this.
Fitz and the Fool is absolutely beautiful. There is sadness in it, but god damn if it doesn't have some of the most tear-jerking (in an "I'm so happy I have to cry" way) moments ever, and one of the best endings I've ever read, seen, or heard of. Period.

You really know as much as Fitz does, which puts you watching though his eyes. Other characters come and go and grow and change and you see the skip from Fitz perspective..then there are things that happen to Fitz.. that he doesn't realize which is great when it is revealed. You end up going back rereading books and going "Oh that's why he ..did that.. Oh that character did that.. because"
I think this series is for me what the Wheel of Time is for you. It's the series that introduced me to fantasy, that I grew up with, and that brings me special memories every time I reread it. I'm glad you enjoyed it even though it didn't blow you away.

I've never read a book that better brings forth what it is like to be a boy or young man. Robin's amazing prose is so concise and to the point it makes me get even more emotional reading her writing. One of the gems of fantasy, and the takes on magic and relations with fellow humans and animals is nothing short of poetic.
I read this as a 43 year old recently, and it just floored me with how she transplants you into the feelings of this growing boy.
This was my first adult fantasy trilogy and it has a special place in my heart. I didn't read LoTR like everyone else, Robin Hobb was my jam. I still like political fantasy books because of it like Lois McMaster Bujold.
Robin Hobb's characters bring out so much emotion in me, I feel for them unbelievably deeply.
My favourite aspect of the naming system is to see how they influence the character's personalities, Chivalry is so proper he abdicates when an indiscretion is found, Regal aspires to the throne and revels in his royal title, shrewd is very discerning etc. Fitz means 'son' and he spend the whole trilogy trying to find his place in the family / a father figure.

Fitz means bastard if I'm not mistaken. Such as the surnames "Fitzpatrick" and "Fitzwilliam"
@@WeAreAllWombles Not necessarily. It means "son of" the same was Mc or Mac in other surnames. It was often given to illegitimate children who had no 'right' to another surname. A good example is Henry Fitzroy, the Duke of Richmond. It has strong associations with illegitimacy but it means 'son of'.

In my biased list, I rank this close to the top of my favorite book list. Fitz just gets battered all the time, and how he always comes back throughout his life. Also following his life throughout the series, just.. Made me breathless, so much feeeeeeels.
Fitz as the unreliable narrator... is so true - but as someone who usually reads third person stories I actually found this really quite cool. Fitz was unreliable because his perspective was so often just plain wrong. Which i find so relateable and realistic - main characters shouldn't always see through the subtext and flawlessly interpret other characters meaning. Watching Fitz slowly come to see things for the truth was always some of my favourite moments with him. The amount of melancholy I felt from following his journey is unlike any other character I've ever read. He is such a precious little gem to me

Lol, keep reading Daniel. It gets so much worse. I made the mistake of listening to one of the audio books while gardening and ending up full blown ugly crying for the whole street to see, and I loved every second of it.
Jon Stop it!!! Stop I say! You’re scaring all the people I’ve been trying to convince to go to the next trilogy. I’m assuming you’ve read them all at least ones with Fitz. So I’m gonna try to say something very vaguely in hopes that you understand. He gets things and stuff with a bit of what not on top of it. The thing is most series stop there. we never get two or three years past a climax like that but Hobb takes us through the next two or three seasons/era/better word here/. Of life after. Does that ring True at all?

Just finished the vid. I am so so so so SO glad you liked the first book enough to give it the rating you did because every single book after this one is a league above it. Just the book after this one brings everything you liked about Assassin's Apprentice and amps it up greatly and the ending is an absolute masterpiece imo. The third book in the Tawny Man trilogy is my favourite fantasy book I have ever read and I dont think anything will top it.
This series is without a doubt my favourite fantasy series of all time. Everything from the characters to the worldbuilding is so masterfully done. The world is BEYOND unique as you will find out and the characters are wonderful, but most importantly they are REAL and you can see that in every single thing they say or do.
There are so many scenes within Hobb's books that are just etched into my brain because they are so potent and masterfully written (most from Fitz's story because I love him). The drama of Hobb's stories and the connections you make to these human characters make for some of the most investing reading experiences I have come across.
Hope you continue with these books because the opinion you gave of the first book has convinced me that you will love the rest maybe even as much as I do.

Good trilogy with the third book being a bit of a drag as seemingly nothing happens in it for whole chapters (and Hobb likes long ass chapters).
Both the Liveship Traders (multiple perspectives) and Tawny Man are better (maybe because the scope of the world gets bigger).
As for the unreliable narrator, Fits is a bit of an idiots at times, plus the people around him tend to hide information from him, so it's no surprise that he can misinterpret some situations.

For some reason I didnt have problems with the slow pacing most of the times in Assassins Quest. The ending tho... Not bad... difficult to explain but didnt like how it was narrated?
I just finished MadShip last night. I think is my fav until now. I've heard great things about Tawny Man and Fitz & the Fool, both in forums and Goodreads have them with 4.33 stars and above so that speaks tons.

I loved Liveship Traders right up until the end when we had an awful pacing trainwreck.
I love Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings! Next book features an animal bond that will explore more of the Wit magic system so you should look forward to that! The discrimination of the Wit and the more powerful applications of the Skill play larger roles in the second and third Fitz trilogies since Fitz is older and more experienced by then. I think one of the problems with the first trilogy is that Fitz is too young so he isn't nearly as competent as he has to be to in order to be proactive. I highly recommend you finish the entire series; it's a masterpiece!
I've only read the first trilogy(I binged it one book after the other), but I really enjoyed it. I don't tend to like first person, but I found Hobb's writing so immersive that it worked for me - I could visualize everything perfectly. They are definitely slow reads, in my experience. I do intend to dive into the next series at some point, but keep putting it off.
I'm on the second book of LiveShip Traders and it is really good. Also very different since it is multiple 3rd person povs. I know you'll like it as well despite being so different
Do yourself a favor and read the _Liveship Traders_ trilogy. I might not even have gotten into the _Realm of the Elderlings_ world if I hadn't read it before the first trilogy.

So glad that you reviewed this book. I read Assassins Apprentice and couldn't stop reading the story, and ended up reading sixteen books. I loved every minute of this world. My family and I fought over who would get the next book first, as they came out. Robin Hobb captures me, and brings me right into the story. I felt every moment with Fitz. I was in love with Nighteyes, and the Fool became my heart's best friend. Kind of hurt me when you threw the book.
True heroes acknowledge when they are wrong, and endeavour to adjust their behaviour accordingly.
Also, prose is a singular noun.
Robin Hobb can write a book. I love her prose. And the old Michael Whelan cover is waaayyy better than the cover of the book you are holding up.

I'm glad you liked it. I've seen a lot of new readers dnf the series because they saw Assassin in the title and where expecting Night Angel or Mistborn.
Just finished the book. Man, that was tough but really good. The hardest part to read was definitely the end of the Second Act, I’ve found myself screaming “Jesus, Robin! Can you give the boy A SINGLE WIN in his life!?”.
One part I felt weak was that some characters could have been more present during the story like Fedwren, Rudrick and Lady Patience.
The second one, and this more personal one. The whole “But I don’t have Skill” gig was killing me. I know he was gaslighted by Galen to believe that, but it takes so long for Verity to correct him.
Finally, finally, a nice, nuanced review for one my favorite books (and no, I haven't even finished the video).

Assassin's Apprentice was one of the first fantasy books I ever read along with The Wheel of Time. I agree with most of your review but I'm so sentimental about this series (the whole 9 book series) that I will forever love it, flaws and all. Fitz grows so much as a character over the course of the books that I can't help but love him. I even named one of my cats after him. He was a freaking bastard too.
Glad to see this! I still haven't got into the Farseer trilogy, but Hobb's Liveship Traders trilogy is one of the best I've ever read! Very creative magic elements, nice characters, a true favorite of mine. You should check on that!

Only read the first trilogy so far, but: My favorite thing is that every character is so well realized. When Fitz makes a stupid decision you're angry at him, but you can also see completely how he came to the conclusion he did based off of the information he has, and it doesn't feel contrived at all.
Robin makes characters you fall in love with.

remember, the book was written from the point of view of a CHILD, kids live in a bubble, their perspective is different. That’s what I struggled with my first read through, a child trying to understand the grown-ups.When I could quit having to bring myself back to that point, I got so much more! One of my all time favorite series (there’s 9) and they get better and better

My first Hobbs books were the Mad Ship trilogy.
I think that made me like the first trilogy even more than I would have, had I begun there.
To me, Fitz grew on me because while to me he remains mostly passive and reacting, I feel for him. He is very capable but he really just wants to be left alone and that never seems to go away, so he is always a reluctant hero, and to some that might make him boring. I feel like he is just a human being who is basically weak on some points where we are not used to a protagonist being weak.
In any other series, he would be a cool supporting character, but Hobb makes him center and uses him as a looking glass to people around him, many of which would have been more traditional first picks for the protagonist role.
He's never my favourite character, but I have grown to love him as vessel for the stories Hobb tell.
I’ve always wondered how it would work for people who don’t read all 16 books in publication order, which is certainly possible because of how they are broken up into different mini-series.
@@timswabb It worked well for me, I must say. The Farseer Trilogi was pretty far down the list for me. I don't remember how far, but The Rainwilds stuff were definitely before for me. I've just really enjoyed the whole lot.

Please keep going with the Farseer, Liveship Trader, and Tawny Man trilogies. If you like slow, delicious burns and gradual, marvellous world-building/magic systems, these books will knock your socks off.
Individually, each tidbit Hobb weaves throughout the stories provides a fascinating stitch of the whole, beautiful tapestry that you see more and more clearly by the end of the Tawny Man Trilogy. I think you will come to utterly love these books (as I do). I look forward to seeing your journey as you review these series!
i reread the farseer trilogy a couple months ago and the thing with Fitz having no personality in the first book is one my favorite characterizations for it makes a lot of sense cause he was completely connected to Nosy, he even mentions that when he played with the kids he was much like a dog, silent and playful.

Just read the first and am about halfway through book 2. 100% agree that the prose is so ludicrously good, and as someone who also has problems keeping characters straight, her ability to make me care about every character and remember everything about their arcs was incredible.
Such a good book, I’m so exited that you decided to read this. I mean fitz just feels so human, the way that when those moments of truth come, he fails, and continues to fail, he’s not some demigod or super intelligent, sure he has special skills, but he still fails like everyone else
Just started reading Assassin’s Quest and I’m absolutely in love with this series! Has to be up there as one of my favourites based on the character work alone!
I had a similar impression of the first half of the book. I think it comes down to Fitz being a very passive main character. He spends a lot of time having things happen to him instead of him doing things that affect the story. Once he starts to grow up and have more awareness and agency of everything around him, the book becomes so much more engaging. The ending was fantastic too, if the falling action was a bit underdeveloped.
I love Hobb's character work. One of the best I've read. Great review dude
Great set of books, the Realm of the Elderlings is tied to be my favorite series with Stormlight Archive.
You were right on all accounts but 2, the aftermath of the ending actually takes a lot of time and was pushed to book 2, and the "art" is underdeveloped because the old masters are gone (they mention it in book 1 but you can't know why untill book 3)
I really loved the 3 trilogies involving Fitz. Very rarely does a series make me cry but this one made me a few times.

What I love the most about what I've read from robin hobb is that day to day, nothing is happening thing. It feels soothing to read. The trunk in the bedroom and putting the log in the fire and the breakfast and how he walked down to to the town and then came back. It feels really good. And the magic does get better flashed out, but takes time and other trilogies
The sudden stop with no catharsis will make sense sense at the start of book two.
So excited to see you starting in and can’t wait for you to get through the next two books in the trilogy.
Beyond happy that you Daniel finally picked up this series. Robin Hobb is truly one of the greatest writers I’ve read and I think her talent resides in mainly in her character work. Her ability to develop such realised characters is nothing short of astounding imo. I’ve gotta say in terms of world building she does manage to expand the “bubble” through the series and a lot of what you see in fitz’s story is largely solely on what he sees/ what he perceives. After reading live ship traders I started to see that the world Hobbs has built is vastly complex but we, as the readers, are slightly stunted by Fitz’s sometimes stunted view of the world in that first trilogy. I also found Fitz to be rather bland before the final Farseer book where, I feel like, he starts developing a true sense of self and purpose that kept me reading the whole Elderling Series.
This series has stayed with me since I first read it as a teenager. It left a bittersweet feeling that never left me. Fitz is such a interesting character.

Finished Book 9 today. The series doesnt have the most fascinating world building, but easily the best characters and drama. Super realistic characters combined with the First Person Narrative makes you feel like this really happened. It's amazing. I am reading it for the life tragedy and all the cool characters. It goes far deeper than most fiction.
It's a great feeling to watch a review before you've read the book, and think I might like this book, then to read the book and understand everything in the review on a much deeper level.
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the villain choice throughout the series. It was one of the biggest things that I was left thinking about after reading these books
Honestly I found the series to be entertaining and fairly solid but suffered from overhype with the main character being the weakest part of the series for me. The fool being one of if not the strongest part of the series for me.
if you ever get around to the concluding trilogy, your mind will be blown by the interactions between Fool and Fitz
@@RushavMohanty I concluded the trilogy and wish I trusted my instinct and dropped it in book one. Fitz is such a disappointing character. The payoff and for his character (development) simply isn't there.
@@RushavMohanty actually I did and it really was one of if not the best moment of the series but once again Fitz still seemed lacking compared to other prominent characters. Also I didn't feel much catharsis from the ending but that felt like an intentional decision of the author.

just to be sure though... i was talking about finishing the Fitz and the Fool trilogy not the Farseer trilogy. the F&F series is where Fitz and Fool's story really ends. there's also the Liveship Traders and Tawny Man series that occur between the two (although Liveship Traders focuses on a different cast)

Love Robin Hobb, particularly this series. Going to do a full readof The Realm of the Elderlings starting early next year.
I just started part 2 yesterday! And I won't say anything about it, cause yall should read it yourselves. I really fell in love with this world and writing, if you have doubts, just try it.

I'm on the 4th trilogy(?) in the series, the Rain Wilds Chronicles, and i must say i don't see myself stopping unless i'm done with the whole realm, or unless i reach an untimely end. It's also nice that Hobb alternates between first person and third person trilogies, it allows a different pace and feel to build the world

I discovered Robin Hobb in the last few years, after 20 years of reading fantasy and after finishing the entire Farseer series, it became my all time favorite series. It gets better book by book. So happy you’re finally reading these.
Glad you finally found time to read Assassins Apprentice and that you liked it enough to continue with the series. My favorite books. And now, after what you said about your feelings for dogs, I like YOU that much more. My feelings exactly, about people dying in movies/books, compared with dogs dying in same. Thanks for the review, you articulate the essence of this book, this author, well.
I really liked Assassins Apprentice although I had problems with pacing on the third. Also a lot of the plot lines don't get addressed until later trilogies.
Robin Hobb's Soldiers Son series is gut punchingly powerful and sometimes distressing get to read. I met Robin at a convention and asked why she mistreated her protagonists so much. She said her characters always had an umbrella of safety around them. Also the books never sold. So she wrote a book where the worst possible things she could think of happen to the characters and it sold.
Great non-spoiler review!! I haven't read it before and have been unsure of whether to add it to the TBR, but your overall positive rating and good aspects you pointed to are enough to push me over the edge to add it to my list. I really appreciate how you try to evaluate books both in a more objective light and a more subjective one, as I think both modes of criticism are valid and helpful for us readers!

What is with Americans and putting the main character on the front cover? That was no go at my Uni illustration course. YOU HAVE DEPRIVED THE READER OF IMAGINING WHAT THE CHARACTER LOOKS LIKE.

I‘m so glad that you gave it a fair shot. So many booktubers just react with „meh, wasn‘t for me“. Which is fine, everybody has their own opinion. But there are also so many amazing elements that devellop over the series. Her characters are among the best in fantasy in my opinion. I have only read the series once but am really curious how I will feel about the beginning on reread, knowing full well of what is to come and what Hobb is capable of.
I‘m happy that you will be going on with the next books and hopefully your socks will get blown of your feet. Hobb surely did achieve that for me. Good luck!

You noticed that the world building works for this one novel. The beauty of hobbs writing is that only gives you information fitz would notice. So as a boy he, and you as the reader, have a boys understanding of the world, as he grows older and starts to take the reins of responsibility his knowlege of the world outside the dutchies expands and the readers knowlege grows alongside. So the next book royal assasin hes still kind of a young man with a lot of learning to do, but some really interesting things happen as he gets older and has to start butting heads with other characters who have traditionally just told him what to do.
I feel like Name of the Wind was heavily inspired by the Farseer trilogy. There are sooooooooo many similarities!

Daniel, could you review The Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander? It's a classic fantasy series from the 60s, had a disney adaptation in the 70s and highly underrated since its somewhat regarded as a YA series but I wouldn't say so. It's very classic fantasy, much like The once and future king and some editions have super cool covers, love your content, thanks.
I loved that series when I was young and have always meant to reread it but never have. As I recall it was unusually dark for a purported children’s book, which apparently was the problem with the movie, as the powers that be at Disney tried to lighten it up with mixed success.
Prince Regal is probably the character that I have personally hated anywhere. He wipes ass with the likes of Joffrey, Malfoy and Jar Jar Binks.

It ain't an easy read...But holy cow it's a good one.
The world building in the series as a whole is actually pretty interesting. I found that it reflected both Fitz' involvement and understanding of the world with just enough extra so you don't feel like you're always in a dark room.
Oh, Dude, would you consider doing a breakdown series of all the metals in allomancy and feruchemy? I think it would be very cool, and your unique presentation style would be very fun.

Yes, I've waited for this for years😭 I think Hobb ate all the books on human psychology before writing this series. And don't start me on the incredible depiction of bonds with animals and the human relationship with nature ;; it's worth the pain Hobb put us through (Fitz can't relate)

I love this series. I love that the world is small when Fitz is a child because... well yeah. I’ve gotten so many people into the series who hated the first 100 ish pages. I just said, keep going and they all ended up loving it

I just found your channel (love it btw) and am actually surprised you only started this series in 2020! I actually discovered Hobb when I was looking for female lead fantasy books and bought Ship of Magic without reading that much into it. So I actually read that trilogy first and let me tell you, it just catapulted me into this world. I have been very disappointed with Hobb along the way (and have amazingly conflicted feelings about the ending), but boy of boy do I love those characters she created! Going to watch all your reviews now!
Also, because I didnt start with Fitz and only sorta learned of him through the eyes of Amber, I never really changed my mind about him. Ive gone between thinking he's okay, being extremely annoyed with him and outright hating him. But then again, this happens with main characters and myself A LOT. There's probably some psychology to unravel there, but thats not for the youtube comment section lol.
Wait til Kettricken gets more involved and Nighteyes turn ups. Love this trilogy and Fitz deals with a lot of shite.

Fun fact, the name 'Fitz' means 'child of', its use as a name for bastards comes from the last name 'Fitzroy' meaning 'child of royalty'. It was a last name often given to illegitimate royal children to acknowledge them without bringing them into the royal family. The name 'Fitzchivarly Farseer' literally means 'child of Chivalry Farseer'
I've discovered this book and this world 20 years ago. I've read multiple times every book. Fitz, Nighteyes and Patience are my favorites.
