I love this book. Im on Royal Assassin now. I'm soooooo glad I got into this series. In some ways its better than ASOIAF! Some. The question i have is who is dumber, or more gullible? The Farseers, or the Starks??? Both dont know when they are getting F'D.

Keppet means Beloved in old English. No, I don't think Shrewd erased his memory, I think he did a quick scan, and maybe impressed upon Fitz the need to be loyal, but I think the trauma of being separated from his mother erased his memory, it's a pretty common reaction to childhood trauma. I know someone who doesn't remember anything before they were 10. I did pick up on it the first time, but like Fitz, I was more interested in Molly lol.

Thanks to you both for pointing out this touching and tormenting moment, and the name sounds so much like "keep it" or "kept it" as in her feelings towards giving her young boy away. I watched this video after finishing Assassin’s Apprentice and it totally took me by surprise as well, but after talking about it on the discussion for RA, I watched it again and totally think that this has to be one of the best examples of what Hobb does best, what separates Hobb’s writing and characterization from a lot of authors and how even these small moments can give you insight into Fitz and the situation around him by giving you observations through Fitz’ eyes that allow you to make an observation even if Fitz himself doesn’t pick up on it. @@derrisreaditbefore I am from the Netherlands, so when I first stumbled across these books in my local library, it was the Dutch translation. I think I was about 19 or 20 years old and wasn't feeling comfortable reading in English. When I met my boyfriend, who is native English and encouraged me to read in that language, I usually read books in Dutch. It's not that much of an acccomplishment ;-). I think what I gained, is the feeling the names have. Some names are translated, so I probably have more of a good feel about the semantics and way of naming. When reading the books now in Dutch, it sometimes leaves me wondering from what English phrase something has been translated, and it more of a hindrance than a bonus. I do however, still read faster in Dutch and am able to focus better (e.g. when my husband is watching television). Even after years of reading English...

I’ve just finished the book (which I loved) and I don’t think I realised this was supposed to be his mother. It was clearly someone who recognised Fitz, but I thought she was trying to warn him about something, and assumed it would be revealed later. I then forgot about it!
The one (tiny) criticism I have with the book is that it didn’t convey the relative size of the Duchy and Buckkeep, and population etc. I didn’t know whether there was a minuscule chance of him meeting his real mother, or whether it was quite likely because Buckkeep town isn’t that big.
I definitely agree it’s odd that he can’t remember his mother despite being six years old, so Shrewd wiping his memory makes sense.

Great video - reading this trilogy again for the umpteenth time at the moment. I did pick out the '"Keppet" incident the first time I read it and realised/assumed that it was Fitz' mother who recognised him when he went into Buckkeep, Subsequent references in Assassin's Quest expand on Fitz' parentage.
Regarding Shrewd erasing Fitz' memory, I hadn't honestly considered that Skill was a factor in that. If memories of early childhood were erased by Skill, it stands to reason that Verity or Galen could have done that as readily as Shrewd (either intentionally or by accident). Could imagine Galen doing it intentionally for malicious reasons or Verity Skill-blasting Fitz by accident.
If Shrewd had done it, I'd imagine that he'd have discussed it with Chade and an opportunity would have presented itself for Chade to tell Fitz at some point. Much as I love the Peter Jackson / Tolkien movies, I'd crawl over broken glass to watch any dramatisation of Robin Hobb's books.

I caught that the woman in the market was his mother and grandmother, (I also read the series once a year for about ten years straight) but I remember a part of the book that also said he didn't remember much about his mother and then later that he was angry with her. How could he be angry with her if he didn't remember her? This is just my opinion but I think he willfully blocked her out, and chose not to remember because he was so angry that she didn't fight harder to keep him, or she didn't come with him. It sounds like PTSD to me, which Fitz has a bit of. Whether or not Shrewd played on those biases I am not sure but it wouldn't surprise me. He is not my favorite king. Even in the snippet of memory he has of being abandoned, it's clear his mother isn't a part of it. I think he also says, in that initial scene, he didn't call out for her, and it's written in a way where I think he very much did call out for her. Fitz is very bright, so his never considering the woman at the market is his mother, nothing coming back to him, makes me think maybe Shrewd DID block that all behind a wall of pain and a sense of abandonment.

  • @iamkrohn

I don't think Shrewd erased Fitz's memory. Its simply a Trauma reaction. Having worked with children it is not uncommon for them to block previous parts of their life out. Also memory is a fickle thing and is often reinforced from our life experiences and fades away quickly overtime.

I certainly could see Shrewd as having used the skill for something of the sort (after all Chade says in the same Novel that Shrewd is willing to sacrifice a lot of things for the sake of the duchies, including himself and verity. This wouldn’t be beyond what he’s willing to do), my only issue with such a theory is that at the conclusion of assassin’s apprentice, Fitz realises as he’s saving verity from Galen that shrewd lost the ability to skill a long time ago, though he’s loathe to admit it. At the point of the story that he adopts Fitz, would he have even been able to achieve such a feat with the skill?

Fitz doesn't really know Keppet is his name until he gets his memories back from Girl-on-a-Dragon, so you'd probably have to re-read Assassin's Apprentice after reading Fool's Fate to notice (and I'm sure some people did). One thing that also disturbs me: Shrewd seems to have also wiped out Fitz's mother tongue. His first language was probably Chyurda, but he has to re-learn the language later on and doesn't speak it very well. I know it's possible to forget a language, but you'd think a child that old would have retained some of it.

Man, when reading these books, I initially thought that both Shrewd and Chade were these cool, old guys, but by the end, I wanted to strangle them. I wouldn't at all be surprised if they had something to do with Fitz's lack of memories regarding his mother. Moreover, their actions (or lack thereof) enable Regal and his cronies to get away with their crimes. I know that eventually Chade comes around and works to fix things, but by that point, so much damage had already been done. I was really hoping that somebody other than Fitz would call Chade out for failing to recognize the menace that Regal posed.
I think that the lesson that Hobb is offering is that the people that we grow up idolizing eventually reveal themselves to be human beings with flaws and all.

So I do not remember the specific passages, and I am to lazy to find them. But I remember that kettleyou said to him that he does remember his mother and childhood. And when he gives away feelings to girl-on-a-dragon, he gives away his memories of his mother/childhood I believe. So while I think it is possible shrewd did "something", he did not erase his memory. Also there is not really a noticable change from when he was just a stable boy, and after he received the pin so I don't think something happened there.

You know I didn't miss it Jimmy.
BUT - as I've found to be true, we the reader, impact the story more than most people realise. We bring our own understanding with us. I didn't know my Father growing up, and the thought I found most distressing was, 'I could walk past him on the street and not know him'. So this scene immediately held my attention, add in my later understanding of being separated from my children, and bingo. Cue instant heartbreak.
I enjoyed the format of this upload, it's a great way to focus on a small or minor point, and has the added benefit of bringing shorter length content to your channel, which I'm guessing the almighty algorithms will like.
    *mild Tawny Man Spoiler*
I do believe Shrewd walled off Fitz' earlier memories, and while he does regain some of them after the Fool gives him back his memories from Girl On A Dragon, you need to remember that Fitz gave up those memories AFTER he and releases Kestrel/Kettle from her mental bindings. A connection that allowed her to see that those memories were, like hers, behind a wall that his own guilt strengthened.

** potential spoilers** I don't find king shrewd to be a dear character at all. He was ...shrewd. I'm doing my 4th read ATM and I'm finding stuff I missed again, and the majority of it sours my opinions of the Buck politics, with shrewd being the center of it for acting so.. Him. His actions, and his self preserving (in terms of his legacy) come up over and over as manipulation, skill use or not.
On the skill, it's obvious that Fitz was tampered with at least once in the first trilogy somewhere, but I agree it's highly likely that he either was skilled into forgetting, or maybe he had bonded with the wit, and was cast out from his society as a broken thing with a mouth to feed. I'll look for more references, but I find both highly likely. He is loyal (skill suggestion) to the farseer but he also is innately reclusive and bonds with a kind of reckless abandon. I think his problem with putting himself into his bond is a complication of conflicting skill suggestion vs his innate nature. Even later in the next series, and again in Fitz and the fool, he has issues with the need for bonding, but I think he's gone mostly wolf and lashes out like an injured wolf. Only by the end do we get the protective fury that Beloved just brought too early to the game.

I rather think memory loss was a combination of his young age, sudden change of envoierment and and new things to focus. Also i dont think worse of King Shrewd. He is king and he does what is best for Kingdom and ready to sacrifice even his sons so the memory of his bastard grandson is not much of a price for the greater good. Even if he had killed a Fizz in his young years you could not judge him. Kill one boy or it will couse death of thousand and misery for hundreads of thousands, this is burden of king.

Shrewd was extremely selfish and overall an awful person. I don't understand why someone with such an awful personality would be "beloved" at any point. Fitz was pretty much brainwashed into this blind loyalty for a king which is why Shrewd is portrayed in such a good light in the books (1st person narration), but if you really analyze him, all he saw in Fitz was a disposable tool that he could potentially use in any way he likes (including as a sacrificial pawn, as he so plainly said in Assassin's Apprentice by saying he could use him in hostage exchange). He doesn't think of Fitz as a grandchild, he just wants him as a tool and that's it. I'm not sure if Shrewd had anything to do with him losing this memory, but I wouldn't be surprised.
