    Another great video. So glad I found your channel. Like you, Scrivener and Ulysses are my favorites, and I agree with using Scrivener for fiction and Ulysses for non-fiction and short pieces. I agree that you have to have MS Office, but if I have to write a Word document, I'll do it in Pages and transfer it to Word. I had never heard of Shaxpir, but I'm intrigued by its analysis capabilities, and I'm going to give it a try. I bought your writing books, and I'm working through them. I like your presentation style and editing. It's amazing how many CZcamsrs don't edit.

    My only beef with Scrivener is its wonky file sync. If you write on a Mac, iPad and iPhone, keeping them synced can get tricky. Ulysses has a great handover capability. As for word processors? Pages, for me, is simpler and more collaborative then Word ... and great for publishing to Apple Books. Thank you for your great advice ... much appreciated.

    This might be a naive question, but your answer is important to me. With the writing apps you listed, would it be redundant to use another proofreading app as well. Or would these writing apps offer a robust editing/proofreading option? My short stories are piling up, and I want to start the final drafts. I have Grammarly, and it's very useful. Would I likely run my manuscripts through Grammarly after using the writing app? What would the workflow look like? Anyone can chime in for greater perspective. Thanks.

    Sorry, going back to writing apps for iMac, iPads and iPads... would a Shrivener be a good writing app for songwriting? Would a Ulysses or other writing app be a better app for songwriting? Or is it just apples and oranges preference? Could you suggest a writing app with an iPhone, iPad iMac for songwriting. Thank you

    As always, thanks for your very thorough reviews. I’m sure a LOT of time was spent investigating and trialling all of these apps - all to fit into a neat 20 minute clip. Just want to say your efforts are appreciated. I’m giving Shaxpir a spin right now. Like you, I am Scrivener all the way. I have just started using Final Draft 11 working on a screenplay - very niche writing product but I can see why it is #1 in that space. Ridiculously expensive though.

    Please, talk about "Manuskript". It is totally free and open-source. Has a lot of features, as Scrivener, outliner, focus mode, markdown, and much more.
    For Windows, MAC and LINUX!
    The program has some little bugs too, but, as a totally free software, still is a good alternative.

    • @AuthorLevelUp
      @AuthorLevelUp  Před 4 lety

      Not really. You can send your Scrivener project to your editor, but that’s fraught with problems. The best way to do this is to write your book in Scrivener, export to Word and send that to your editor.

    • @thebibleproof
      @thebibleproof Před 5 lety +1

      @@AuthorLevelUp Photoshop is an image manipulation program, but Affinity Publisher is for doing publication layout, much like Adobe InDesign (which I don't have). Since Scrivener can't flow text around inline images, and one of my book projects will be graphic intensive, my plan is to export from Scrivener into something that lets me do the complete layout, them reimport into Scrivener to complete the project. How would you approach it?

    • @AuthorLevelUp
      @AuthorLevelUp  Před 5 lety +1

      If that’s the case, you may not be able to reimport into Scrivener, especially if you’re working with layouts it can’t handle. I would make sure you get your novel edited/finalized before leaving Scrivener so that you can use InDesign/Etc to format the final ebook that will be published.

    Cool tip: you don't actually need a subscription to MS Office/Word. Their OneDrive is basically Google Drive, and you can use Word, Power Point, Excel, etcin a browser just like you can with Google Docs. And it's free. It has all the same features, you just can't download it to your Mac/PC. MS OneDrive is hecking awesome. (I still have the subscription, though, cause I do like writing offline.)

    Hey, not sure if you still respond to comments here haha
    Really enjoyed the video! Shaxpir (?) looks really nice. Will definetly try this one and ofc ulysses and scrivener to find one that suits me, because I'm looking for an app that offers some planning options haha
    Now to my actual question: Can you recommend any of those apps for writing outside of fiction/novels/books? I'm still in University and will have to write homeworks, papers, a thesis and all that stuff and wonder if any or even all of those apps can do that as well.
    Word would be an obvious choice but I kinda wanna "level up" and get an app that works better for writing novels etc. and after all those years of using word it's just... Boring. Uninspiring. Sort of annoying haha and definetly feels more 'meh' for writing books. (Ironic, considering Sanderson writes all his books in Word)
    Also, have you done a video on best writing apps for bloggers/script writers etc.?

    • @AuthorLevelUp
