    You had me smiling broadly the whole time, William, thank you! Love your lighthearted and friendly approach here; keep 'em comin'!

    Back in my early days as a graphic designer on a Mac, knowing all the keyboard shortcuts for symbols, accents, etc. was like having a super power that fellow designers in Windows didn't have. They'd keep the character map application up on their screen and would pray that the character needed would format properly with the font they were using. I've become rusty in my too many years in upper management, slogging away on joyless office PCs and thumb-pecking at my iPhone. But I've resolved to revive my memory of the old strokes this fall on my MacBook.

      Sometimes I think the whole PC versus Mac thing is just what you're used to, but then I use a PC and it's always such a faff. All I want to do is get on with my work but there's so much fiddling to do first.

      It's almost as if Apple doesn't watch 58keys. As if. Thanks: I like scheming and then having my schemes foiled, there is just something delicious about it. Plus I've been meaning to do a Mac tips piece for ages, so I'm delighted you liked it.

    That magical option key!

      I was late to a Twitter conversation about how you type something like é, e acute, on a computer. Mac users just said if you have a Mac, you do option-e. PC users said you obviously have to know what the ASCII code for an e-acute is and type that three or four digit number while holding down the Alt key. I'll stick to Macs and the option key.

    That copy/paste thing is cool. Definitely can't do that on a Chromebook (trust me I tried). And the process for getting a degree symbol? Well it really isn't worth it.
    Mac: 1 Chromebook: 0

      There is of course an alternative for the degree symbol that I have only thought of this moment as I read this. Copy it from the internet and paste. Here's a degree symbol especially for Chromebook users who have come here, presumably lost: º.

    I've always used shift-option-8 for degrees, which gives °. Now you come along with option-0 which gives º and I don't know which one's correct anymore... °º°º

    Brilliant as always, never a waste of time to benefit from your wisdom! I was not aware of the the Option key shortcuts, thank you! Also, tap-to-click is what separates humanity from animals, no?

      Goodness, that's very kind of you to say, thanks. And I wish I'd said that same thing about tap to click. Quite right.

    American here, where it is 62 degrees, and I had only heard of one of your five which is why I need you. On another point I think the background on Apple Books cannot be changed when the upload is in landscape, not portrait. I think that's the key of what I mentioned to you.

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  Před rokem

      That's interesting... thinks... That's as if a landscape book is seen as specifically designed, deliberately laid out in a certain way, while a portrait one is just - "just" - the text flowing as it needs.

    • @tripley66
      @tripley66 Před rokem

      @@WilliamGallagher yes, I think you have it...but most landscape books also have pictures, which mine did, perhaps they want to preserve the integrity of the pictures and not have the background color change?

      You noticed it was her lyrics I copied, excellent. I wrote somewhere that I wouldn't kill to write like Dar Williams - but I'd maim.

      I'm not sure what you mean, I'm afraid. I can tell you that I write in Pages. But also Drafts, OmniOutliner, Final Draft... Probably too many. What kind of things are you looking to write?

    ok I must have missed something cause I can't get the copy between iphone and macbook to work....

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  Před rokem

      Funny thing: there's a more visual copy and paste that I'm going to cover in a future episode and I can only get it to work one in ten times. Cannot fathom what I'm doing wrong, or indeed what I'm then doing right. But the copy-and-paste that I cover in this video is unfailing for me. Let me think... Both devices have to be on the same Wi-Fi network. They must both have Bluetooth on. And it's a good idea to make sure they're both updated to the latest iOS and macOS. Other than that... I don't think this can be part of it but it's only other thought I've got: in Settings, General, AirPlay & Handoff, is Handoff turned on?
