- The Carpenters are one of the best-selling music artists of all time with three number-one singles, five number-two singles, 15 number-one hits (Adult Contemporary) and 12 top-10 singles. They have sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Karen Carpenter is justly considered the greatest pop vocalists to grace a microphone, and perhaps less known as a superb drummer. In 2003, I interviewed producer/arranger/singer Richard Carpenter for my BBC Radio 2 series “Pop Arrangers” which later became my book “The Invisible Artist” (with a chapter on Carpenter). Here he discusses the arranging and production techniques used in the making of such hits as Close To You, Ticket To Ride, Calling Occupants, We’ve only Just Begun, and many more. This is probably the best Richard Carpenter interview of all time. One of the only interviews, post 1983, that the anorexia isn't mentioned.

I am not a musician but I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Richard explain his thinking on how he created certain music. To me, Richard is an amazing blend of talent and hard work.
Thank you Richard Niles for this interview. This is pure heaven on earth. While Karen was the “voice” of Carpenters, many people fail to understand and recognize Richard ‘s contribution and importance to their success. IMHO without Richard there would have never been “Carpenters” and what a tragedy that would be for all of us. “Carpenters” still play in my home- and often!

Even if Karen was the voice, Richard's singing is the salt in the mix that makes the Carpenters sound work. Without his singing it wouldn't be the earth shattering sound it is.
This was a Masterclass in music creation, production and recording. Just a treat to hear. Ticket to Ride when I first heard it sounded strange because of the original one still in my head. However over time The Carpenter's version has really grown on me. Great to hear Richard explain the nuances of it. I just love the ending of it. THe pathos is much more apparent which Richard and Karen really brought forth to make it a true masterpiece!!!!! The interviewer was brilliant in his questions and observations to draw Richard into a great conversation. Early Russian influences ...the Slavic mindset of irony and pathos..I can hear that in a lot of Richard's arrangements. Rachmaninoff. When he played parts of Superstar reminded me of that great composer. I think as time goes by more and more people are appreciating the artistry and sophistication of The Carpenters and their place in music history. I was 10 years old in 1970 and throughout the 70's I remember hearing their songs on the radio but not really paying attention to it because it was a bit "soft" for me and the kind of square image that was created about them. I was more into Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer and Led Zeppelin. Great musicianship in those bands but then as I got older and more into playing and trying to write my own songs it gave me a greater appreciation into the craft of writing and arranging music and lyrics. Also from watching my nephew who studied at Berklee for piano (And has a similar opinion of modern singing as RIchard), and was writing musicals in the style of Cole Porter, Frank Loesser and Jerry Herman to name a few . It really expanded my view on the craft of composing and arranging and what is involved. Richard is absolutely right....the music that stays with you for a long time is always about the melody. I would put the Carpenters along with their lyricist John Bettis in the same league as all those great American Composers for arranging and composing. The way they were marketed back in the 70's has fallen away thankfully and the talent has shone through!!! Bravo!!!

The Carpenter/Bettis song book is only a few songs. Probably not even twenty. So you can't put them up there with those great song writing teams you mentioned. Maybe most of the first album, after that: I know I need to be in love, Crescent Noon, Mr. Guder, Top of the World, Only Yesterday, Saturday (lightweight), Drusilla Penny (lightweight), I'm Caught Between Goodbye And I Love You (not a great song, in contrast to Richard's optimism at the time), maybe a few more.
Excellent technical interview. So much better than the"what's your favorite color?" typical interview style of others. Please do more of these.

Without any real musical knowledge I just marvel and appreciate the work of this man and to think he was able to accomplish this in his early 20’s. Richard and Karen were a once in a lifetime combination.
I will say it again....the mid 50s-70s produced the best music ever in world history. So much creativity and good vibes from that period.

Very good interview with a great arranger, always just loved the Carpenter songs and takes on songs. Richard Carpenters orchestration on songs and builds are just so right with his late sister’s wonderful voice.

I love the Carpenters. The later material was even better, as the songs were more cheerful. “Those Good Old Dreams” is a wonderful, upbeat song. To make the music live on, it must be played, sung, and performed. Make karaoke tracks with visuals so the Japanese can sing at a lounge. Have children perform, “Sing.” At home by myself or with friends, I enjoy using a Casio arranger keyboard, because it has built in rhythms with variations and fills. It is fun singing Carpenter songs.
A superb interview and similar to the Barry Manilow piece, you ask the questions that no one else does and not only do I want to know the answers it is actually historically important. Excellent!

I'm sure that's true, but you know someone before him that pioneered that modernized choir sound with the close harmony but doesn't get credit for it? Andy Williams as he directed The Osmonds.

I wish there was a documentary about Carpenters STUDIO work, like 'Beach Boys classic albums Pet Sounds' but the documentary should cover ALL of Carpenters studio eras, their evolving techniques, arrangements, and epic chorale applications. A docuemnmmtary with a disclaimer at the beginning ( the audio of this film is in Dobly Atmos. We strongly encourage headphones or an Atmos sound system) All the multitracking --- with Atmos? GTFO , that would be badass.
There's genuine psychedelic stuff throughout early Carpenters, I think Richard may have dropped LSD or just possibly he was simply heavily influenced by musicians who have. That first album is SO trippy.
As a fan of hardcore punk, Led Zepplin, White Stripes, and the Beach Boys - I finally made the connection with Carpertners music this year and I experience it so intensely - mentally and physically. They're like Mozart or Bach....I hear masters of music and can't get enough.....All of it, chill-inducing. It's SO SOPHISTICATED musically. Both of them were Masters of the studio and there's no information on this stuff. Every book and documentary is formulaic and not musically intellectual - or they're about eating disorders. What about the MUSIC?? Carpenters have been screwed over, they deserve the Beach Boys' treatment to bring their awareness to more people like me.
Of course this documentary radio show was a way to do what you say. It is the only interview of him at the piano explaining and demonstrating his method. I would be happy to make the documentary you suggest but that would require financial backing! Wow! Just Wow! This is a genuine conversation between two artists.
Music, at its root is a language. Few are more adept at this language than Richard Carpenter.
What's frustrating for us fans is how after Karen's death, Richard chose to (for whatever reason ) not be as prolific musically as his immense talent obviously allows. Producing other artists, exploring other genres, film soundtracks, etc. - the possibilities...

Out of my curiosity, how did you set that up?
I was a BBC broadcaster on Radio 2 for over 20 years. I wrote the show and the BBC set up the interviews I wanted.

It is and will be very hard to separate the musical legacy to the early passing of Karen simply because it begs the unanswered question why didn't anyone try to save her

@@DRRICHARDNILES Private matter? At 17, Karen was offered a recording contract by Joe Osborne. When she was 19, the Carpenters were offered a contract by Herb Alpert because of Karen's voice. For all intents and purposes, Karen's voice is the reason there is even a Carpenters sound.
@@eisenjocasaclang1701 You misunderstood my reply. Of. course her voice is one of the greatest in popular music. By "private matter", I mean that Karen's anorexia and her mental problems were NOT the subject of my interview. The subject was how the Carpenters chose songs, wrote songs, and arranged, composed and produced their music. I am very happy to have achieved that. My intention was not to discuss her health issues. To the best of my knowledge, all those around her tried very hard to help her. But it is not.a simple matter to help someone in her condition and I was not there to speculate about a private and painful subject.

Hence, as much as one would like to simply focus of the musical part of their legacy and Richard's talent, it is really hard not to think of the tragic end to their sound once Karen passed. To my knowledge and I could be very wrong, Richard has only one top 40 hit since Karen's passing despite working with Dionne W, Dusty S and Petula C among others
