Sang her songs to dad after he lost his speech and ability to walk from stroke. He remembered me singing them over and over through the 70's, so he knew them well, and he loved it, brought him such joy. I've had a few record deals in my life, and no doubt, Karen is who taught me to sing more than anyone.
The most requested song during my time as Disc Jockey at KELI 1330 AM Tulsa was Close to You with Superstar a very close second. Looking back I still get choked up when I watch her funeral. That was the hardest job of my life the day that I announced her death just minutes after it came across the wire. I can only say that were it not for CZcams and digital medium the world would have been cheated from hearing what I always said was the Most Recognizable voice on the planet. it NEVER took more than 2 notes of Karen's voice to know who it was.
“Instant Radio” said Phil Ramone. “You knew it was her on the first note. Uncanny” Quincy J described Karen as “inherently soulful” - she didn’t have to wail or scream, she could hit any note effortlessly and you always heard what she was feeling..,
I really miss my songbird sister, she died in 2013, but sometimes I still cry: My little sister & only sibling; Janette 1960-2013. Loss is so hard when the loved one still seems bigger than life. Richard Carpenter, me and others so miss our little and older sisters that are gone.
I don't understand why anybody would give this a thumbs down. They must think that they can play and sing better than he can. That's the only reason I can think of.
Gayle Levant! such soooo sweet lady! The whole documentary made me emotional, but Gayle! you're such a beautiful lady! so great that you're a very important part on Carpenters career! my honours to you!!!
For the very first time, I see a documentary which spent 45 minutes to cover one song, in the course also cover the great legacy of the Carpenters. You took time to seek opinions and comments of the lyricist, composer, oboist, harp artist, and so on. Excellent video, I thank you for taking your time to produce this documentary.
Only a fraction of the video is about the song. I had to fast forward to get to each interview segment which was annoyingly spread throughout the presentation.
Excellent song and excellent documentary on my all time favorite musical duo and their also mega-talented associates. I live in California and went to Japan 27 times and know well of the major devotion that country has always had for The Carpenters. In a Lawson Station convenience store in my hotel basement, in between a couple of J-pop songs, was an instrumental cover of "I Need To Be In Love."
1976 I was 13 years old and I fell in love with her voice but actually First time hear the Carpenters song was Top of the world which is In commercial song of Sprite in Japan in those days but I’m not sure anyway Carpenters song impressed 13 years old boy’s heart I’m sure Especially Karen’s voice I still love it 🥰
First of all Thanks so much for the producers of this exhaustive and interesting "analysis without paralysis" documentary of this beautiful ballad. The timing of this album came when The Carpenters were starting to have a decline of airplay in the US radio and were branded as "Antiseptic music" being so clean, lush, and perfectly produced & arranged. It is indeed an imperfect world, as most radios then started to divert to loud, noisy music as part of fad evolution (not timeless). HOWEVER, case in point - Japan, thats why they produced this, and just as enthusiastic and well-embraced this song was The Philippines, were it became a No. 1 hit especially to the high school age range. It was so popular & meaningful there that they still play it on the radio even today as if it never left. Even the well underrated follow up album Horizon which was almost basically snubbed by the US radios was a huge hit in the Phil. especially the gems: Love Me For What I Am & I'm Caught Between Goodbye & I Love You. The Filipino people also appreciated The Carpenters' unique talent & style like the Japanese listeners as most of us are very sentimental or hopeless romantics! ;^) ...I'm confident Mr. Richard Carpenter who I highly admire ( I wish I had his talent...but only a selected few can be given such!) together with her beloved late sister can attest for the Filipinos love for their timeless music... he's visited our country & even accompanied former president Gloria M. Arroyo singing a song Richard would have never thought somebody actually knows by heart, the song "I Have You" which is Pres GMA's favorite song during her teenage years! That reflects how much we made their songs a part of us... from the teenagers newly exploring "puppy love" to the president of the country. Whoa! OUR LOVE & APPRECIATION TO THE CARPENTERS!
God bless Richard and Karen. Funny how such extraordinary talent brings such joy, but then full on sadness and problems. I only pray that Richard now finds only joy in his great talent. And I know Karen is singing and smiling from Heaven, finally content and possessing every gift she ever hoped for. One way I’ll know if I’m in Heaven someday is if I hear Karen Carpenter singing!
Here I am in december 2022 listenig/watching this amazing documentary. Carpenters is part of our life in Brazil and around the world. It was amazing years. Regards from Brazil.
As a (former) anorexic myself, I could imagine how Karen felt singing this. Some of it was confirmed listening to this interview. Some things they still don't understand. It was thought she was too young for some of the lyrics but that wasn't true. Part of anorexia is trying to be perfect but it's that striving for perfection that prevents intimacy. It breaks my heart that she was never able to experience that. Thanks to her though millions have been able to. After 15 years of an eating disorder I was able to start recovering. I'm fully recovered today AND happily married. It's been 19 years since my last hospitalization and I'm symptom free. If you or a loved one is struggling, know that help and recovery are now possible. We have Karen to thank for a lot of that.
It's refreshing to hear of your success in your battle with Anorexia. You can certainly understand better than most Karen's ability to be such an Angelic individual in her life yet lie through her teeth about her illness. It's so easy in hindsight to see how it eroded her life yet nowhere did it ever seem to affect her voice. Maybe in her concerts or interviews, but after years of pouring over over a thousand videos I never saw anything that was affected. She had an amazing Soul. Her song "We've Only Just Begun" was a song that I had wanted played at my wedding only for my Bride to nix the idea due to the song being a bit before her time.
Every time i hear their touching voice and songs, i do retrospects about childhood and my grandfather who passed away. Thanks japan for making good video about them
先日、母方の祖母が亡くなりました。真っ先に浮かんだ曲が、この曲、I need to be in love と Top Of The World でした。とても心地の良いメロディーで、亡くしたことへの悲しい気持ちが和らぎました。何もしてあげられなかった自分が、とても憎いです。これから、祖母の分まで一生懸命生きていくことを恩返しとして頑張りたいです。
Thank you for the documentary. The song was and still is beautiful. Thank you Richard and to all the Carpenters. In times like these it's nice to reflect on wholesome, beauty and love.
Thank you for this tape. Helps heal the loss of Karen and also fills my heart to know she was appreciated. And that everyone that helped make their sound so perfect and beautiful were as genuine as she (Carpenters) were. I was blessed to see them in concert in 1974. I think the only singer close to the beauty of Karen's voice would be Celine Deon. You'll agree music has changed so much away from smooth loving ballad sound and lyrics that we only have our CD's to keep us sane and happy and moody like we were years back. That music is part of our souls indeed. God Bless
The Carpenters...!!
It was a hit in 1976. It reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Richard's definition of a hit was probably Top 10 on the Hot 100 chart. But unfortunately disco had taken over by 1976 and soft rock was not getting played as much. So it's a testament of how great this song is that it did that well as the second single from an album during this transitional period in music. Great songs outlive fads and that's why this song will always stand the test of time.
@@graceweber2822 - I so adore "I Just Fall In Love Again". To be honest, most of the songs on their albums were good enough to be released as singles. Had they released the song that was later made popular by Anne Murray, it would have been the 4th single from "Passages". The other three didn't make the top 30 (again, the changing music scene) so even Richard would not have been able to convince A&M to release another single. Lush ballads were only played on Adult Contemporary radio at that time and not popular radio. The three singles they released from "Passages" were the ones that were most appealing to pop radio at the time. Anne Murray's version was sped up a bit and shortened, which helped it be played on popular radio. But it doesn't hold a candle to the Carpenters' version.
That wasn’t Richard’s call to make. The record company does that. The problem was the song was over 4 minutes and couldn’t be abridged. It would have also been the 4th single from the LP and they wanted the airwaves clear by the time ‘Christmas portrait’ was released.
Incredible touching documentary, just by coincidence found it on youtube and stayed hooked. Thanks, the voice of Karen always touches me deeply. A voice frozen in time, but still buring with fire
This was actually a fairly slick and well made documentary. I guess the producers were pretty fond of INTBIL, but the quality of the presentation was quite high. I really believe there needs to be a two hour plus film of this musical act. Their talents-and of course her beautiful voice- are very worthy of a major retrospective.

I'm so glad that the solo piano intro was re-added to "I know that I need to be in love." The first copy into of the cd release of A Kind of Hush had what sounded like a flute intro. I just assumed the master had been badly damaged and this was a work around. Carpenter's recording always had excellent sound quality with Now and Then being a possible exception.
I grew up listening to Karen Carpenter listening and singing her songs in the 70 s she is my upmost favorite singer in the whole wide world! Karen Carpenter always redo ATED with me she's part of my past she always resonated with me in some way I can relate to her life she's and always been part of my life's tapestry and she will always be part of my life I keep her close to my heart ❤️❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm grateful that, in this compilation, Richard acknowledged Karen's unparalleled voice and musical talents. There'll never be another singing artist like her. RIP Karen. ❤
could you imagine sitting at that piano, and looking at all the platinum records on the wall. Wow, they were the greatest artists the world will ever know
To me she was the most perfect singer in the world, and I have never quite gotten over her being gone; and also Richard never got enough credit for being a musical genius that he is either. They were a perfect duet.
This a great documentary! I think this song fit Karen perfect as love was what she was missing in her life. She was searching for love. What she really needed was to have God's love for her to be revealed through Jesus. If she could have known that, it would have changed the outcome of her life.
So true. I have had experiences only the Lord could help me overcome. The Holy Spirit is our wisdom, Jesus is the Love we all want and God is the heavenly father who stands behind us and truly sees our worth through Jesus's sacrifice.
Interesting that Richard was doing what Mozart did. In Mozart’s world it meant no corrections on his staff. Hearing the whole finished song in his head is something that sounds like writing a symphony with no corrections. RIP Karen 💔
@@justsomegirl7274 Mozart was known for hearing his compositions so clearly in his head in terms of not only the notes, but the orchestration that when he got to writing it down it was "one and done" meaning he wrote it down exactly right the first time and never went back and made changes
As an artist, songwriter, I love hearing the breakdown of this song! Cause the minute I read it was written by 3 people, I wanted to know who did what.
Karen you have the most beautiful voice ever. You sing like an angel and sometimes make me cry. RIP
No one is truly gone, if she is remembered.

I loved the song the first time I heard it.
Inesquecível, à primeira vez quando se escuta... voz de Karen Carpenter não tem igual: voz de cristal.
It makes me sad that Richie never got the credit he deserves. He was the genius behind the band. I'm a big fan of his art.
This song, reminds me so much most of the time, every Sunday tho.
Well done documentary.
I love that Song !
ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAV SONGS! ACTUALLY THEY ARE ALL MY FAVORITES!!
Impossível não se encantar com a bela voz de Karen.Que coisa linda!!!!
Rich...you are soooo good! Maybe I could sing for you!
I'm grateful that, in this compilation, Richard acknowledged Karen's unparalleled voice and musical talents. There'll never be another singing artist like her. RIP Karen. ❤
could you imagine sitting at that piano, and looking at all the platinum records on the wall. Wow, they were the greatest artists the world will ever know
I'd love to see other songs analyzed like this. There are many others that would be great.

Okay! Thank you!
To me she was the most perfect singer in the world, and I have never quite gotten over her being gone; and also Richard never got enough credit for being a musical genius that he is either. They were a perfect duet.
この曲を日本に持ってきた人が凄い‼️👏👏👏👏👏💯💯💯💯❤️
my favorite song
Eu amo faz parte da minha trilha sonora desde de 95 quando pesquisando conheci essa maravilhosa banda essa linda voz de Caren.....
What A voice .. What A song OMG
Always liked that song.
Thanks T Grace for uploading this interview..Happy to hear the stories behind their songs..
Interesting that Richard was doing what Mozart did. In Mozart’s world it meant no corrections on his staff. Hearing the whole finished song in his head is something that sounds like writing a symphony with no corrections. RIP Karen 💔
Simone Schultz what do you mean by no corrections on the staff?
@@justsomegirl7274 Mozart was known for hearing his compositions so clearly in his head in terms of not only the notes, but the orchestration that when he got to writing it down it was "one and done" meaning he wrote it down exactly right the first time and never went back and made changes
青春の輝き
世界一好きな曲です。
この番組をずーっと前に観た記憶があり、今日また出会えて感動しています😂
カーペンターズそして青春の輝きは最高です♪
Amazing no other words to describe. X
I love karen Carpenter from the bottom of my heart ❤️❣️ and soul ❤️
Well Done Documentary. Besides Karen's Wonderful Voice, it shows the important part Richard played as well as other musicians involved.
As an artist, songwriter, I love hearing the breakdown of this song! Cause the minute I read it was written by 3 people, I wanted to know who did what.
Richard does a flawless impression of Tom Hanks! Listen for it...
I just love the Carpenters they great they were. So beautiful songs they put out.. I sure miss them I am so glad I have all their records.
