His piano solo on "This Masquerade" is TOPS, and I think he once said it was ad-libbed? Although IMHO I find that hard to believe cause it's so PERFECT.
Chill people! This was 1994 and this was a nice casual tribute to Karen while Richard was on a promotion tour. He was very kind to play along with Kathie Lee Gifford, who for her part was no slouch in those days. She was the original singer on “Name that Tune”. No need to compare her to Karen here. She wasn’t trying to one-up Karen, but just do a little tribute in an abbreviated way. Why all the rude comments?
Let's not knock the singer, she managed fine. It is only stating the bleeding obvious to say it is not Karen. But this is a one off fun sing, not a tribute act! It IS Richard on the piano, so nice to see him at work, a fine pianist, nice clear articulation.
This is a very old video, but appreciated none the less! Kathie Lee sings from the heart and brings out the emotions we all felt when Karen sang the same songs. Richard's arrangements were astounding; thank you Richard!!
There will be no other female artist can compare to karen voice...i wish she still live to this day..so sad someone like her no more this in this world.
Good to see Richard looking so happy in this 1994 appearance. In so many appearances, even up to today (2022), when Karen comes up, Richard gets a haunted, hurt, sad look in his eyes that really makes me feel so sad for him. I'm a "big brother" with a "kid sister" and "kid brother" too. Sibling bonds can be strong, and the "brother-sister" bond may be the most powerful, emotionally close, affectionate and connected of all sibling bonds. My little sister is precious to me, and even the mere hint of a thought of losing her opens a huge hole in me and I'm SO glad that I don't have to face that right now. My biggest dread in life as the older "big brother", is the possibility that I may be the only sibling left in later years, left only with memories. God Bless Richard.
It was extremely shoking 4 me listening Karen's Theme by Richard Carpenter & inmediatly lyrics 4 Karen came to me. I hope u like it -love, from ARgentina CZcams: czcams.com/video/aq8b3KGJbIA/video.html FACEBOOK: facebook.com/BozziniMaria/videos/10154458104316616
It's a snowy day in Reno NV in 2023. This is a great way to celebrate some downtime. THANK YOU FOR SHOWCASING KAREN! She influenced me so much in my teenage years. She was 10 years older than me. I call her my first vocal coach. I now sing all over the world with symphonies and chorales. Read Richard's book recently. Such a shame. I miss all of Karen's vocals.
what a great opportunity to listen to this MASTERFUL musician!! (& I "feel" for him -having endured MORE than his fair share of difficulties...) thanks much for posting!!
I remember as a kid on the way to swimming lessons the song "Yesterday once more" many times would be on the radio! Good memories! Kathie Lee is no slouch on these songs! RIP Karen Carpenter!
Richie, you resemble your sister so much! It must have beem hard for you to lose her. Keep on making music, because you are a genius and millions of people love you and your art! Hugs and a standing ovation from Brazil.
Richard happy Birthday, you have such great talent, please get together with another singer and start recording again, I know you cannot Karen, I am one of your biggest fans. I miss your music.
Was a sweet tribute. We all know there is no replacing Karen. I’ve never even listened to any tribute bands of the Carpenters. Just can’t ever bring myself to do it.
I backed a Karen Carpenter tribute some years back - the great thing was that she wasn't a slavish, parrot imitation, but the timbre and the style were still close enough to put a little shiver down the spine. You know it when you hear it :-)
Thank you Richard for sharing your love and talents with us!! I think of you and your sister Karen EVERY DAY as I love to sing your songs on my treasured Karaoke 🎤 machine!! “Singing this song for you” ✌🏽🎤
Can't be easy singing Carpenter hits in front of Richard Carpenter.....Kathie Lee did a good job overall. Why would you want to follow Karen Carpenter? Nobody can do that.
Kathie Lee has an awesome voice. I'm gonna show my age here. I remember when Kathie Lee was on the game show Name That Tune. . Have to say Love the Carpenters. They are the best.
Go Kathie! "Close to You"" done very well. You sang in your voice but done way better than most ppl.Pretty version of "Begun" as Karen called it. "Rainy Days" sung beautifully! Thanks Kathie Lee!Nice of Richard to do this. Thanks Richard! We Love You Karen! Miss You!
I don't think she was trying to imitate Karen. I certainly wasn't trying to imitate Kenny Rogers that time I sang "Lucille" at Libertyland that Spring day in 1977.
Wow! I felt like no one ever could sing the Carpenter's songs and do them justice, well I was wrong. I didn't want to like her singing them, but I did, Kathie Lee did a beautiful job. Kudos to her for her versions, and putting her heart into it!!! ❤️
Well, Kathie Lee started her career as a singer (first on the gameshow "Name That Tune"). Of course, on "Name That Tune", she never sang all of a verse of any song. As for comparing her to Karen Carpenter, I'm not going to. Karen was a talented singer in her own way; Kathie Lee is a a talented singer in her own way (of course, she is no Karen Carpenter).
I think that it isn't a good decision, Even when he was part of Carpenters, I think that karen's was the soul and giving him a record with his sister is dead and a lot of ppl think that ha was blame cuz her tragic death.
To all them people bring up Karen: We all love her and she was the best ever but she left us and Kathy was trying to help Richard C play along with it for some of the songs. Chill out.
I loved it. She can sing’ and had the same low tone in her voice as Karen Carpenter. Yeah she slipped up a bit’ but maybe she got nervous. It was excellent. If Anne Murray sang some of these songs’ it could also work. She has the same quality in her voice. A top class performance here. I think she sang the songs in the same key’ as they were originally sung. Someone said that Richard Carpenter didn’t sing with her’ but he probably wanted to let her carry it herself.
It's obvious they didn't rehearse this before they tried it and of course Kathie Lee can't hold a torch to Karen's vocal talent or singing ability but you have to give her some credit for giving it her best shot.
Look folks, Kathi Lee Gifford was a professional vocalist who was in NAME THAT TUNE. Just because she doesn't sound like Karen Carpenter doesn't mean didn't interpret those songs well.
I remembered an old episode of the Diagnosis Murder tv show. Dick Van Dyke's real life daughter was in this episode when she was singing some Christmas songs and happen to sound like Karen Carpenter. At first I thought the singing was dubbed and seen that particular episode a few times. Then I happen to look up Dick Van Dyke's bio info, which mentioned that his daughter was a singer but her voice sounded alot like Karen Carpenter.
Just got a nosebleed listening to back row trying to imitate Karen can never happen which is why no one has ever we recorded any of my music and made it popular otherwise I had his songs copied and have had some success no one has ever imitated been a success recurrent songs and listen to this Crow stretch it out is an insult I can't see I Richard could even play the piano and talking about Karen which is why Kathie Lee has disappeared and Karen will be around for the next century rest in peace my darling is singing with the angels
Kathylee is a fine singer, but she's more of a lounge singer style. No justice here, but fun. And nice of them to honor the great Karen Carpenter. Seeing and hearing Richard play those opening notes to Close to You can bring a lump to your throat and tears to your eyes. Not that I would know, I'm speaking about someone else, you know, a friend.
Let's just say that Karen Carpenter is a tough act to follow.
Yes this lady has a beautiful voice and yet....
Richard Carpenter is a musical genius and never has received the credit he richly deserved.
Agreed! ❤
They were definitely a team. Either couldnt have done it and reached the pinnacles of success without the other. Karen is so missed!
I still watch it, 2024, Richard is inredible pianist....!!! Will never forget them, The Carpenters.....!!!
His piano solo on "This Masquerade" is TOPS, and I think he once said it was ad-libbed? Although IMHO I find that hard to believe cause it's so PERFECT.
Karen has the best singing female voice of all time.
My 2nd would be Barbara Streisand.
Yes, I think we're good here.
Barbra Streisand is in the top 3.
Jeffrey Pearl Sooo true!
Barbra is #1. There will NEVER be a voice like hers again, and the same for Karen. Karen didn't have the range Barbra had in her prime. NO ONE DID.
I could watch Richard play the piano forever. Such expertise and experience.
Kathie Lee sang beautifully, leave her alone. Maybe she isnt Karen...but no one is!
That's the point
I think Kathy Lee was better than most singing Karen's Songs
@@caroltoy6915 ME too!!!!
Richard Carpenter, a genius.
Happy 70th birthday Richard. Thank You for the music!
Chill people! This was 1994 and this was a nice casual tribute to Karen while Richard was on a promotion tour. Don’t think she was trying to imitate Karen. You can tell what joy it gives Richard to play those songs again. Good job.
She did the best she could going up against the greatest of all time.
That made me smile. Just beautiful! ❤️ Miss Karen. R.I.P.
Never knew Kathie Lee was such a good singer. She did the songs justice
You're lucky not to remember her Christmas special then 😉
Kudos Richard for continuous legacy of the Carpenters 🌹🙏🎹🎼🇵🇭
Let's not knock the singer, she managed fine. It is only stating the bleeding obvious to say it is not Karen. But this is a one off fun sing, not a tribute act! It IS Richard on the piano, so nice to see him at work, a fine pianist, nice clear articulation.
Kathie Lee did the song justice
@@ericindallas5293 ya, no one will ever to sing like our beloved Karen, but kathie Lee could really rock it at the karaoke bar
Richard is truly enjoying himself here! Very sweet :-)
What a gifted talent Richard is as well! He knew how to compose the perfect songs for Karen,s voice!!
Bravo Richard. The driving force behind the Carpenters. Amazing combination of him and Karen. Absolutely iconic.
This is a very old video, but appreciated none the less! Kathie Lee sings from the heart and brings out the emotions we all felt when Karen sang the same songs. Richard's arrangements were astounding; thank you Richard!!
the voice is not so bad...Richard plays perfect....but i miss Karen...
There will be no other female artist can compare to karen voice...i wish she still live to this day..so sad someone like her no more this in this world.
Richard should work with new singers...he has so much to offer...
Sam Chang I agree however I understand if he wouldn't coz there is only one irreplaceable Karen!
He sings with his daughter! She’s not Karen but not bad!
Good to see Richard looking so happy in this 1994 appearance. she makes Karen Carpenter's voice even more amazing, not that she's that bad but it really shows how clean Karen's sound was.
Karen was the gold standard.
There's no comparison.
Wings of Pegasus on his channel does a computer diagnosis of Karen's voice, which shows just how perfect her pitch was.
🌹Katie Lee has an amazing voice, didn't realize it until now.💖👌
Karen, where are you when we need you and your voice back in this world today?
Kathie Lee sings beautifully. Great tribute to Karen. Loved and miss the 90’s.
Yes she did a good job people are so neagtive.....
I think my favorite will always be Goodbye to love all thanks to that guitar solo. Damn it still gives me goosebumps to hear it.
Karen sang goodbye to love so perfectly......summer 1972!
It's a snowy day in Reno NV in 2023. This is a great way to celebrate some downtime. THANK YOU FOR SHOWCASING KAREN! She influenced me so much in my teenage years. She was 10 years older than me. “Singing this song for you” ✌🏽🎤
Can't be easy singing Carpenter hits in front of Richard Carpenter.....Kathie Lee did a good job overall. Why would you want to follow Karen Carpenter? Nobody can do that.
exactly! it is absurd for any other singer to be compared to Karen Carpenter, as nobody will ever be as perfect as she was
Kathie Lee has an awesome voice. I'm gonna show my age here. I remember when Kathie Lee was on the game show Name That Tune. . Have to say Love the Carpenters. They are the best.
I'm sure Kathy Lee was nervous but she didn't try to be Karen. She was honoring the songs. Karen was incomparable and u repeatable.
Karen is the Best Female singer of all time.! I look forward to meeting her in heaven.

Nicely done, and a lovely voice, Katie
I remember Richard Carpenter being on live with Regis and Kathie Lee that was my favorite talk show
Richard is a class act.
Kathie Lee has a good singing voice, but Karen's voice had such a unique, warm, soothing quality to it that can't be matched.
I don't think she was trying to imitate Karen. I certainly wasn't trying to imitate Kenny Rogers that time I sang "Lucille" at Libertyland that Spring day in 1977.
I would love a complete record of this! Love when she flubs, so human and raw. Thanks for posting... 😍
I didn't know Kathy Lee is a wonderful singer!
Man, Richard Carpenter was a talented composer, arranger and pianist. And Kathie Lee acquitted herself very nicely.
Great job Kathy Gifford and Richard Carpenter...fabulous Duo!
You can tell Kathi Lee admired Karen’s vast talent !
Seen the Carpenters in the 70's in Manchester,England was great still miss them
Richard is such a talented musician. RIP Karen.
He looks alot like Darren from bewitched.
that is because he is darren from bewitched
+Moses Sofer lol. Stop!
;-)
Even his voice sounds like Darren steven.
Darren, Dirwood, Dagwood, Dustin and Dickie. 😝
Good job!!!! Karen was awesome...obviously Katie Lee loved her songs
Hard shoes to fill. Rainy days and mondays was always my carpenters favorite
Luv this clip, and it's a great book too! :)
It sounds so strange hearing someone else sing those songs. When he begins to play the piano you expect to hear Karen. Rest in peace 🙏 God bless you.
lindo...amo...
@5:00 the beginning piano notes to We’ve only just begun.....quite moving to say the least.
Beautiful!😍
I miss her
Every female singers has one's sound in ones voice......nice to see Karen's memory remembered by singimg some of Karen's songs ❤

Omg I believe Karen had a good laugh up there after that version...
What the hell? I give kudos to Kathy Lee for her courage. But about nothing else in this. Richard Carpenter shows great patience here.
I love her voice!😌
Surprisingly solid vocal performance!
Fantastic
He should be given a life time achievement award.

It's actually nice to hear Kathy Lee singing these songs because you can tell how much of a fan of Karen she is.
My favorite singers 1 Karen Carpenter 2 Celine Dion 3 Cher 4 Whitney 5 Maria Carey
It's obvious they didn't rehearse this before they tried it and of course Kathie Lee can't hold a torch to Karen's vocal talent or singing ability but you have to give her some credit for giving it her best shot.
Agreed. She wdn horrible just different style.
Great job Kathy!
Nice Job Kathy Lee, your very talented.
That was very nice!
She does have a lovely voice and singing to Richard must have been so intimidating
What a beautiful lady indeed
God Kathie Lee can never help herself can she?
Look folks, Kathi Lee Gifford was a professional vocalist who was in NAME THAT TUNE. Just because she doesn't sound like Karen Carpenter doesn't mean didn't interpret those songs well.
Kathy Lee Gifford sang Carpenters better than most, and it made this segment the best interview ever.
It was star burst,,,2 words 1 beat!
Kathy Lee had a nice voice here - she did a nice job

Kathie Lee did great

I love how he didn’t sing with her. Good for you Richard. Honored your Sister well.
I love you! ❤️
Actually he did.
I wish that they had shown a picture of Richard and Karen together. Unless I missed it.
Poor man , His career died along with Karen. Too bad those close to her were unable/unwilling to help her.
Golly-never knew Cathy Lee sang-she's pretty good.
Years ago there was a show called " Name that tune ", she would sing some of the songs. Her name was Kathy Lee Johnson then.
Wow
Kathylee is a fine singer, but she's more of a lounge singer style. No justice here, but fun. And nice of them to honor the great Karen Carpenter. Seeing and hearing Richard play those opening notes to Close to You can bring a lump to your throat and tears to your eyes. Not that I would know, I'm speaking about someone else, you know, a friend.
Kathy Lee did a good job !! She knew she couldnt compair her voice to Karen no one can !!
They should have just done the interview.
