Watching other artists who are way bigger on improvisation and each performance being unique, mitski's performances seem much more deliberate to me in comparison, like predetermined art pieces. I love both styles of performing and I love that Mitski puts so much prep into how a piece will go

I think if it was mixed a little differently it would be really great here. It adds a lightness to it that I don't think is really "supposed" to be there, but hell if I don't keep coming back to this performance, the simple, stripped down Daily Show performance of Geyser, and some of the radio show performances of full sets from around the US in part because you get to hear these songs performed with a different energy each time. It's the nature of performance art.

I think actually determining whether or not that personal touch improves a performance or not is more important than just sticking it in there for the sake of it. It clearly doesn’t help this song, so it was a poor choice to keep the piano in there.

Everyone so mad at piano for no reason. Literally there are a 100 other versions of this song including the recorded version listen to those. They probably only had 1 or even zero times to run through this song as a band so it makes sense that piano is trying to figure out what it should be doing. Brilliant version, better than the album version, IMO, which buries the vocal on the loud bits. Everyone in Batiste's band is such a star and I thought the keyboard sprinklings were great.
