This is literally the best song of ALL TIME. I don’t care what anyone says. I LOVED GETTING THIS NOTIFICATION.
+ the meaning of the song is so important and it’s a beautiful message
i cant belive this is an opinion
same
Big facts ain’t gone lie🔥🔥
Well your gonna continue getting notificatons because that is dumb asf😂😂😂
i love that he chose to speak it instead of sing it. i feel like it reveals the true poetry of the song even more
yes that was what I was saying, his beautiful voice singing it can be a tad distracting which is why those Christian playlists keep putting him up 🤭
Poetry because he said it instead of simply singing it? Makes 0 sense but of😂
@@jamaloliver6940because most regard his lyrics as sang poetry and he is aware of this. Its poetry. And he read it as such as opposed to the sang version in the song.
me too its always so awkward when they sing it with no backing lmao
@@gwinnellheald8592 thank u for understanding what i meant
I was never the same after hearing "There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin". Gotta be one of the most influential songs to me.
same
The way the lyrics impacted me then and it does the same to this day
@@pritikaadhikari5758this song literally changed my life for the better, much much better
thank you Hozier, if angels existed you'd be the only angel.
Reminds me of His Dark Materials which is also critical of religion and asks it's reader to see "sin" in a different way
That stanza is wonderful. I wish this was the default attitude.
i’m 21 years old, and to my understanding he wrote this at 23. i think i have some wits about me, but absolutely nothing that would compare to what this song is. seriously some of the best lyrics of the last decade.
he released it at 23, he said he had been sitting on the lyrics for a year maybe more before finally hitting on a melody
You do tho, you could write something this good.
Same :')
I was once told by a song writer that you need to write a 100 mediocre songs before you’re able to write 1 great one. I’m sure you’d be perfectly capable of writing lyrics just as good as Hozier lyrics if that’s something you want to do. You just gotta practice and be dedicated and you’ll get there. There’s no hurry, just because one person achieved something at a certain age does not make you less valid for taking longer to get there. Don’t rush or stress about slow progress, we all take the time we need.
I’m 42 and I still wouldn’t be able to articulate ideas as eloquently and intellectually as Hozier at 23 😂
He is and will always be a POET, first. What a joy that he also happens to sing beautifully. You dont have to look far to see all the passion he puts into his work. ❤ Was not expecting to cry at the end 😭
I didn't even make it 2 minutes in, he deserves the world😭🤍
I cried at the end too totally unexpected 🕊️
he's the only one who is allowed to not sing the lyrics in his breakdown
as he should so the focus would be on the lyrics otherwise we'd be too enamored with the singing
we all already know he can sing
will gold did too lol it was so funny to watch
Because it sounds more like a poem than just lyrics so it sounds nice when he reads it
It’s almost necessary Bc we already know he’s got a mf voice
as an Iranian woman, it means a lot to me that he mentioned last year's protests and that he supported us through his platform back then. and even though we are still struggling and fighting for freedom(not just for the right not to wear hijab but for many other basic human rights) this kind of support even if it doesn't do much for us its still very heartwarming.thank you Andrew.
Best of luck to you and your people, hope change comes Iran’s way ❤
I am also an Iranian woman and I 100% agree with you that it made me so happy to see and I really appreciate it, but I would argue that it does do a lot because many people don't know about the protests, so having someone with such a large platform talk about it and talk about it in such a positive way, is really helpful because it educates people on the topic
as an Iranian man, 100% agreed. Hozier is an angel ❤
❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
This song is very old and beautiful. I’m surprised it took this long for Genius to finally give him the support he deserved. Either way, I’m very happy for him.
I imagine it is because it celebrated it's 10 yr anniversary yesterday
I think because hozier has a new album

I hope he does more of this for his songs, I love how he poetically recites
he does!!! he just released an album inspired by dantes inferno! its called "unreal unearth" and its greattt
@@identificador518i think they meant they hope he does more genius lyric breakdowns, not more music 😅
Yes I need this for all of his songs lol
i want him to do "from eden" or "work song"
sometimes i think this song sometimes is a s**x song
I want more hozier lyrics to be explained by him, this gives me everything
Me too! I struggle with poetry and trying to understand it, to understand the intent of the author.❤❤❤
I'd watch 100+ hours of him just breaking down the context and inspiration for all of his songs.
Y’all are asleep on this man’s lyrics every song and I mean every damn song is a masterpiece melodically and lyrically. Underrated like no other but kinda glad only a few truly appreciate and dissect this guys music .
The entire discography is a whole spiritual experience. Like he truly will Take You To Church.💖
I don’t think anyone is sleeping on his lyrics homie, most of us regular fans of his music sit there reading through it having a nerdgasm lol
@@panadocoughsyrupfrrrr... i literally cried the first time I heard take me to church
Can you recommend more of his songs to me pls??
ITS SO TRUE i unlock a new layer of understanding of humanity and the universe every time i re-listen to his songs
i already liked Hozier but now i LOVE him. I really appreciate him talking about the iranian protests and brining awareness to this as an iranian.
That really brought me to tears...
Hozier is an angel . I didn't even know he supported us Iranians till now but I always said to myself he's an angel .

THE man of the hour.. the man of many sacred poetic words.
a song that wont ever die.. when genius has you doing a lyric breakdown for a song that graced the world about 10 years ago .. thats how you know you have a classic.
im so glad to see he’s done one of these!! it’s such a heartbreaking yet beautiful song
We waited 10 years for the best Genius Interview to be published. The fact that this song is still and will forever be one of THE BEST SONGS objectively is insane. Even if the sound is not to someone's liking, I know damn well the message behind it hits everyone in the same spot.
He talked about this 5 years ago.
“Take Me to Church” is such a passionate anthem for all of us who have felt deep grievances with religious organizations that demonize our humanity. It’s just so perfectly written. ❤
So Murderers who say they have a desire they were born with to kill are okay do as they please because their humans?
as an Iranian this song is as relatable as it can get for me. it breaks my heart everytime I hear it 😞
a warning to rest of the world: we lost our country, our people, our culture and our human rights to organized religions. don't do the same to your countries, don't..
It is indeed.. while I am a religious person myself, there are indeed too many people who have been hurt by religious organizations. I would say though, that religion and spirituality provide the most depth and honesty about our humanity. I hope that you and many others may be welcome in a spiritual community that accepts you as you are. As your honest, open self
I half and half agree, church is too traditionalized and rooted in human traditions and demonization of people over sins when they are no judge; the song also promotes heavy idolatry and a rather self focused view.
@@anattewari316religion is trash Jesus never started a church
I’ve loved this song since I first heard it on the radio… I was 9 so I DEFINITELY didn’t get the meaning but I loved the drama of it. Can’t believe it’s been 10 years
Omgs same
I loved it around age 9 too. I didn’t get the message about homophobia in the church, but I could tell it was tongue in cheek and I loved how scandalously non-religious it was.
I was only like a year older than you lol but I get that, I just liked it because it sounded big, like you said, it was dramatic, and at that point I hadn't heard anything like that on the radio before.
This man is so poetic I could listen to him talk forever.
Hozier acknowledging Sarina and the different kinds of courage was very respectful and humble tbh

Hearing this song live was truly breathtaking. I hope everybody gets the chance to go to a Hozier concert once in their live.
Just saw him live last Friday! Was amazing!
The way he speaks the lyrics out loud really reminds me of the people in church who would recite prayers and you could feel the words they were saying meant something to them. I love you hozier!!
He’s been a genius lyricist since the very first song he ever released, I stan the right artist 🌼🤎
Love that even with this explanation, it remains beautifully interpretive to the listener still... and he clearly wants that!
Take me to church was the first song I sang at my school and got recognized as a singer thank you for writing and singing such an amazing and an epic song Hozier
Omg I found this song when a girl at my school sang it in a school assembly!
It’s rare in life to encounter a person that is both muse and poet, much less one who strikes the hearts of billions with incredibly intense, raw emotion at the ripe age of 23. Keep it up, Hozier, and Justice for Iran 🇮🇷
I simply cannot understand how people listen to this and don't understand that it's not a Christian song lmao
And this has been sung in churches! People just hear what they want to hear and ignore the rest. 🙄
@@retired5218fr
They probably only listen to / know the chorus
@@JamesAshton-tr8wg 😂 But the chorus has nothing to do with church either, but that other thing the song is about. 😂
@@JamesAshton-tr8wg yeah, but still
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog
At the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins
So you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
This is not a good look for christianity either lol
I will never forget how it felt first time listening to this song, beautiful memories.❤
Six minutes and 14 seconds of me having full body goosebumps. Like this song is just perfect. His entire discography is perfect. I saw Hozier live last weekend and I swear there was real magic in that venue during the concert. 💖
I saw him last night. It was life-changing, wasn’t it?
I’m going to see him on the 30th!!! I’m so glad you guys enjoyed the concert, makes me hyped for when I go see him!!!
This song has connected to many people across the globe, it's a timeless critique of religious authority
its not literally about a church its about his gf
@@Ninja1Ninja2it’s also about religious institutions
anyone has any links of info to the protestor that he mentioned at the end?

@Ninja1Ninja2 yh the song is "literally" about his girlfriend, it's also a critique of religion and the way they weaponise love to demonise people. Its a metaphor....he literally explains that in the video
I remember so clearly the first time I heard this song on the radio. I was around 13 and it was the first time I recall being moved so emotionally by music. I had to stop what I was doing and just listen. It is still one of the greatest songs of our generation.
OMG after so many years he finally does one of these😭😭😭
I blame it on Genius
I love him so much. Seeing him perform this song on tour is one of my most precious memories from this summer. Thank you, Andrew, for always standing with those whose voices has been muted.
This needs to be HOURS long. I absolutely love hearing him break down his music. Thank you for sharing this.
I am so grateful for this!
Finally people can no longer contest the meaning of this beautiful song.
It is not “open for interpretation”
It has a strong meaning and significance
this song is truly so healing for my soul. from my religious trauma to my queerness, this song is so powerful
It took me awhile to fully appreciate this song, but it’s powerful and timeless
I've been a fan of hozier and loved this song for a long time but as an Iranian woman "take me to church" hits so different now since it was used as an anthem for protesters to express their frustration with the islamic republic. It's really refreshing to see how he acknowledges and supports the "woman life freedom" movement especially now at the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's murder. I hope this brings more inspiration for people in the front rows not to lose motivation❤
I love this song because many of us Christians forget that God loves all and we need to do the same. Someone’s beliefs or sexuality or anything does not exclude them from the right to decency, love, and Gods love. I’m so glad he wrote this song
Beliefs have a whole lot to do with it
I never actually considered that these Genius videos would ever feature Andrew, even though I almost exclusively learn his lyrics from that site 😂😂😂 this feels like such a novel thing for him to do, we should appreciate these crumbs as much as possible.
The man the myth the legend hozier. He brings me joy and butterflies he’s just so humble and kind and his way with words
I think the spoken version (the poem itself) of the song is now my favourite version. Like he said, the way it highlights the comedy/satire of the lyrics is so beautiful
I remember back in school when this song came out and was really popular we were just doing Rimbaud and Verlaine, Baudelaire and overall French Decadentism in connection to Italian literature so we stumbled upon the term "la petit mort" and I almost scream because I finally understood the meaning of "deathless death" in the song. My teacher asked me what was wrong so I told her and we ended up listening to the song in class and discussing its meaning. to this day, one of the most memorable lessons ever
I'm shocked it took this long to get him on here for this song. I am so glad it happened. Hearing him tell us what the song means, at least to him, is such a pleasure after mulling over what it's meant to me for years. Beautiful stuff.
I was 8. My mother, the incredible person she is, sat me down and showed me the music video. THAT was my introduction to the LGBT community,
I’m bi, but didn’t really grasp that at the time. I’m so glad this song exists. I’m an adult living with my boyfriend now, who’s also bi.
That's really sweet
You have a great mother❤
I was 9 in the third grade when my mom and my sister and I watched the video...that was when I learned the word...later that year I realized that word describes me

Well imagine that?! An extremely impressionable mind saw a video with moving music and lyrics. And then all of a sudden “Oh thats me”
What if this song never came out and with the video?! And you never saw it. How were you going to know or come to the epiphany that is what you were?!
@@hubes96 I was gonna figure out I was gay one way or another. Things like this let's us know there is terminology that can describe how we already feel. I was gay before the video. I just found out there was a word for that because I asked questions
Hozier is a gift. A really unique artist in several ways. He's such a great person and I love that he spoke the words instead of sing them.
When this song came out I remember having discussions on the poetry of it with my friends. It’s nice to have some of those thoughts validated by the actual creator. Really well written song. We need more videos like this.
Hozier albums keep lining up perfectly with different stages of my life. If in 30 years this man is not considered a classic Irish poet i will be very mad. So happy to have been on this Hozier wave since the beginning, can't wait to see him again in Dublin in December❤️
This guy is such an underrated artist, this song really blew up but he has so many other incredible songs which I feel are not given enough credit. This guy is a rare breed, a true artist to his core creating masterpieces from deep rooted passion & talent.
This song is a masterpiece! I remember when I first read the lyrics I was shook to the core of my being because I felt seen and accepted with all my moral and spiritual values. Yhe fact that a man truly felt and thought like that gave me a sense of reassurance and empowerment when I was criticized by men for wanting more and not settling for what they offered.
It's been 10 years since the song came out and I still can't express in words properly how important and powerful this song is to me. ☺️
Thank you from the bottom of my soul for this song Hozier! 🙏🏻
I love that he spoke the words rather than sing them. We've all heard the song, it's nice to hear it read as a poem instead and give the words the space they deserve
i wish this was out so much earlier but happy 10yr anniversary Take Me to Church
He is such a brilliant writer
Without realizing it till many years later, this might have been one of the most influential songs of my life. Truly a coming of age song, it almost hurts a little to listen to it brings back such strong memories
It has lasted because it's a masterpiece and masterpieces last.
One of the few songs that always makes me feel. No matter how many days, months, years pass, take me to church will always make me feel something. And this is so special to me.
I had always respected this song as being a poem first and foremost, something so deep that it leaves 99% of the songs of our age in its dust.
Having watched this explanation … boy, I had barely understood the tip of the iceberg that is this song! It’s so cleverly written and had so many layers. Mad respect.
Its amazing how all his songs lyrics are literal poems when read without music. My english teacher would have a field day with Hozier’s songs
He’s always been a genius. Now I need him to do a genius interview on eat your young 🙏
Moment's Silence because its a genius contributor's wrong interpretation of a verse in Take me to Church that spawned its creation
I believe he decided to speak for two reason. 1) so we would listen and pay attention more to the words and actually see the poetry
2) we would all melt if he sings acapella
I'm from Iran. His words at the end of the video were really heart warming to me and made me really emotional. Thank you Hozier and thank you Genius for including that in the video❤🩹
I could listen to him speak forever.
i remember listening to this song in the car with my christian mother when i was six years old--- im pretty sure it started my love for music, and now i can understand the lyrics and appreciate it so much more.
Very interesting what he says about the similarity with Born in the U.S.A. It's pretty nuts how many people still seem to completely misinterpret that song, like this one.
The rage in his "amen"s during the song have always been the core of it to me
As an Iranian, it means so much to us that he brought awareness to what's going on in Iran and Sarina's brutal death. Thank u Hozier
never picked up on the “holy see” reference! i love this breakdown
me too even ten years on I still discover gems in this song
This is one of those timeless pieces of music that simply just is supposed to exist. Gives me chills every single time 💛
As a Christian woman, this song resonates so much with me. I know the abuses the church has set on other people and I'm glad that it's finally being acknowledged. The rawness of this song beautifully portrays true love and religion in the same sense.
❤
Imagine going to church your whole life just to let some sinner demon make a song sound nice and change your mind 😂 youre actually a joke. Its like eve biting the apple. & stop calling yourself the Big C cause you’re obviously not supportive

As a Christian, I sometimes have conflicting feelings about the song because of its duality
Thanks for sharing your insights
bro thats sad that as a christian you still see this song as a good piece
This man is a genius. I love every single song that he creates! It's refreshing to see real musicians who put so much heart into their songs.
As a daughter of God I really appriciate this song. Even tho I am still part of the christian catholics community I am very aware about problem of this religion
I can't believe it took them so long to bring Hozier here. He is such a wonderful artist
This was powerful, so deeply meaningful - and some lols. As it should be. Happy this is the song that I sung a lot while teaching myself to sing, and continued to come back to even after going a chorus and acapella group. Thank you Genius for having him on, 9 years later 💛🙏🏽
This one makes me feel as if I'm sitting in a poetry/literature class and Professor Hozier walks me through the meaning of each verse.

Loved how he read it like a poem.
this song captures my feelings about everything perfectly
My grandmother is a very very religious woman and loves this song just because auf the title! She never realy listened to it.
I love the song because of the lyrics and the meaning!
I can honestly say 10 years ago at 21 this song definitely felt too heavy for me. In the sense that I often listen to music to escape and keep it light and fun. Hearing it now at 31, becoming a mother, living more life, wow, I am in awe of it.
"I come up very short against courage like that". Such a powerful ending.
i discovered this song in 2014,every year to date i revisit it, to an extent that even my children loved it till they were teenagers ,we interpreted it in our own different ways of which we somewhat agreed that it could be mostly about an unaccepted love between 2 ppl who are genuinely obsessed with one another despite the confinements of the outside world ,they are in their own world of which only the 2 of them exist ,we still sing along each lyric by heart and my word some songs songs are better on loud and this is definitely one of them ,we up the volume and sing along like it's a choir 😅
damn after all these years😮
I can’t believe he’s just reading the lyrics lol I was looking forward to hearing him sing 😭
he said we must learn the words and its meaning because we've been distracted by his beautiful voice too much to bother learning the words
Hell, him just saying the lyrics is that poetic voice reminds my of those Calm night time stories! 😆
he sings in his elle song association vid! not the same but it was great haha
His singing voice is loud as it's a loud song, I don't think it would be helpful
This is my favorite song of all time, it's so pretty and his voice is so gorgeous. It's so meaningful to me.
Hearing him speak on this song is so beautiful and calming, it could be a 10hr loop for falling asleep
One of the best songs of all time. One of my favorites too.
This song came out when I was 16 and I remember liking it, but now as an adult I truly appreciate how poetic it is and how it's so beautifully written.
i just discovered this wonderful man and this song a few months ago. he is an absolute treasure. saw him at red rocks a few nights ago and it was incredible.
I had no idea he was Irish. I'm even more in love with him now 😍😩❤️
5:39 I’ve always admired his talent but him mentioning sarina made me respect him more than ever. I hope he knows how many Iranian fans he has and how deeply take me to church touches a society raised in such harsh religious environment. Women, life, freedom.
I was just starting to question my sexuality when this song and music video came out. I remember sobbing in my room to this video and listening to it over and over. Somehow it’s one of those songs that no matter how many times I hear it, I don’t get tired of it for a minute like other popular songs. Also obviously if you haven’t yet, check out his other albums. I especially like Nina Cried Power and All Things End (and the music vids are so good too)
This man is a lyrical genius in all his songs and this song still remains the best one of all time.
Maybe the first genius to be on genius
I would love for him to breakdown his other songs too. Thank you for giving him the platform to tell his story. 💗💗💗
I can’t believe it’s been 10 years, here’s to 10 more of a great song and an amazing artist
When he started reading the lines of the songs, I got goosebumps. Such artistry.
how is this only the first one of these hes done? all of his songs are beautiful poetry!
it took yall 10 years to get this man?
I hope he see some of this, but songs like this are why music sustains humanity and allows it to find hope, beauty and inspiration at the worst of times. Please continue to share your genius
Ykw the best part is I first listened to this song when I was struggling and battling with depressing and my faith this song connected to me so well and even now after so many years it still gives me the chills when I listen to it
.It's later that i realised what the song is really about and the reason that this song has lasted with so many of us for sol long is ig people can interpret it with their own life and the song would still make sense. Thank you hozier for this wonderful song. This song is forever close to my heart.
His voice is so amazing and poetic, whether speaking or in song. I love his thought process, his gentleness, and his poignancy
This mans voice is better than xanax ❤ so calming
