    That’s what my Uncles bought in the 80s. 4 men taught by their Dad to farm together to save money and they did with just 2 Big Combines. 8820s. They farmed about 1200 acres each and owned several hundred each. I’m proud of them and my Dad who also did well. Great German men!

    In the early 2000's my family bought 2 '87 model 8820 Titan II combines and used them for 4-5 years until my grandfather passed and had to sell his 8820. But my dad still has his even though he retired several years ago. It has duals and 4wd. I loved driving it in corn with the 843 corn head and 925F in beans and wheat, which we also still have both. When I was farming in the 80's I would have been fired for that. It didn't matter if it was beans or corn. I did this during each harvest and was stunned by the amount of header loss of grain for what these machines cost compared to the 80's and what you got for the cost!

    Ran 6600, 7700, 6620, 7720, 8820 TII combines. 8820 had duals and bin extensions with an 8 row corn head. John deere made 12 row corn heads for them and it was designed to run a 12 row head in 150 bu corn. Would also handle a 30 ft head easily as well depending on cutting conditions. Green stem soybeans would make it really growl. And who back then didn't turn the fuel up on there machines? Instead of 225 hp was closer to 300 instead.
    Downfall of running those bines was the heat from the engine since it was right next to the cab and the dust was much worse than a rotor combine. Grain tank with extensions would hold 290 bu vs the 220 bu from factory. Think the 6620 held 170 bu. Was a huge step up in performance between the 66 and 8820 bines.

    I'd often wondered why V8 engines were so common in cars and pickups, but not in heavy machinery so I researched it and this is the explanation.
    V8s. are great in cars because they have short strokes, a lot of high RPM power, and a very low weight to power ratio. They are very good for short bursts of power, but in cars they typically put out only 30% or less of peak horsepower. They are much less suited for large trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment which often run at 80% of full power or more and engine weight isn't an important factor. Heavy equipment engines typically run at around 2000 RPM or less. There are three common diesel pickup engines, Duramax, Power Stroke, and Cummins. Duramax and Power Stroke are both V8s and tend to have a lot of durability issues, while the Cummins is a straight 6 and might be the best light-duty diesel ever made.

    • @stiegerstx500
      @stiegerstx500 Před 2 lety

      Cummins might be the best engine? How many power strokes and duramax have you seen factory installed on anything but a ford or a Chevy were as you can find a Cummins in just about anything

    • @MeadowFarmer
      @MeadowFarmer Před 2 lety

      @@stiegerstx500 That's great that you think Cummins is the best, I think most people would agree. I just used the truck engines as an example of why V8 diesels never became popular for tractors or heavy equipment.

    • @bluegrassman3040
      @bluegrassman3040 Před 2 lety +1

      JD had trouble with the v8 engine that is in the tractor of this video. Something about the block having a weak point near one of the cylinders, due to the engine being used as part of the frame, or something along that line. Many of them were replaced with an 855 Cummins.

    Here in the land of small fields (central PA in rolling hills), tillage and harvest in the 1980s was a few guys here or there with 125-150 horsepower tractors with a cab and a whole lot of people still doing field work with open station tractors that weren't that big.
    A BTO was anyone with a 6620 or 7700.
    That's all changed now, though - farms have gone to rent like everywhere else and the machines may not be 9630s, but they're bigger stuff and larger combines (even if the largest heads aren't on them).

    The economics of farming in the '80s was difficult to say the least. I'm of the opinion all things considered like the economics, inflation and the amount of acres you can cover in a day the new equipment is a bigger value than the new equipment of the eighties . I still have any John Deere 8820 titan 2 as a backup combine. Doesn't cover the ground as quick but it's still enjoyable to drive and run in the field.

    I hope that you had a great Christmas Jason. Love the channel. I think a video of harvesting equipment from the 1990s would be great with some John Deere equipment or CaseIH. But I also would think some would be interested in International Harvester equipment from the 1970s and early 1980s.

    Really nice to see old machinery still in action just like they were designed to do.
    Why did the tractor operator raise the chisel plow for the middle section of the field? I can’t think of a reason why.
    Greetings from the UK

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  Před 2 lety +1

      Good question. If you look at the field the chisel makes two lines running East to west where the 8850 lifts to skip as it heads north to south. The purpose of this is to leave that area unworked as it is a water flow area. By leaving that area in stubble it helps reduce soil erosion over the winter.

    You just can't beat old iron. Yea it's old but it's the best. U never had to worry about some stupid softwear glitch or some tiny plug or wire in the middle of a bundle of wire as think as a piece of fire wood, or some kind of def issue or def code. Of something happened while harvesting or tillage you could usually fix it or rig it to get through the day of heck even rig it to get through harvest. If something broke during tillage you 9 time out of 10 fix it, sometimes could get a part at a local auto part store to fix it or just get by. Plus in my opinion if my butt had to or is I'm the seat I might as well drive the thing. People who say " auto steer helps with fatigue has never had to sit and let GPS AUTO GUIDENCE do everything for 8 hours a day. I want to quit life after a day of Auto GUIDENCE, before being able to watch big tractor power or movies while I'm the cab , I had to TRY not to fall asleep, you know your board when you start trying to count cornstalks as u harvest to see how many actually came up. I think my kneck has been more sore since auto GUIDENCE from my head constantly rocking side to side or back and forth from falling asleep. Love the channel. You should look around sugar creek Ohio at how those boys harvest on the side of hills that most guys wouldn't try and drive up let alone drive down .those are hills

    It must be a large percentage of the farmers lease the larger pieces of equipment. I suppose the tax laws faver leasing vice ownership of equipment from the standpoint of deductions. Maybe the custom farming operations and land rental favor the use of these giant machines. A far cry from my days on the farm.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  Před 2 lety

      I think it all depends on the operation. All the farms that I know in my area by their equipment outright but I definitely hear about many people taking advantage of leasing.
