Suzuki Intruder 1500 Not Turning Over? This might be why ✔

  • How to adjust the decompression cable to rear cylinder on Suzuki Intruder 1500. Motor would not turn over with good battery and stock starter. Don't buy a new starter or battery just yet. In fact, I bought a new battery thinking that was the problem, it wasn't. First you have to remove the top speedometer/gas tank piece, and then the two false gas tank portions that cover the air cleaner, and then the air box itself. The cable to the rear decompression mechanism was too slack to "burp" the compression from the rear cylinder; keeping the motor from turning over and starting. Simple adjustment with some trial and error fixed that using the 10mm wrench from the tool pouch that came with the bike. Bike starts fine now, hot or cold. This might be a do it yourself job if you know what you are doing, but if not seek out a mechanic who does know what they are doing. Here is a website that a 'youtuber' sent to my inbox that further explains this problem and may be of some help: www.moccsplace.com/images/deco...

    I have owned 4 Intruders in the last 6 years. I have read multiple articles from Intruder forums and such. I knew it was a compression issue after reading many comments from mechanics and do it yourselfers. I cannot begin to describe the headaches involved with this mind boggling problem that seems to plague many intruder owners. This video and simple fix has solved mine and many of my friends same issues. THANK YOU SO FREAKING MUCH for this video.

    It's posts like this that make creating videos like this worth it! I've gotten quite a few replies on this video and one like it, so it must be a common thing for that cable to stretch over time and use. I was stranded by my bike once, long way from home. Took the tank covers off and looked over the fuses, all good. It turned out to be a bad connection on the battery terminal that I found while wiggling the wires and the headlight suddenly came on! I heard an arching sound at the battery.

    I had the same problem on my 2001 1500 cc intruder a year or so back thought it was the battery .tried another battery out of my 1400 intruder and still the same thing acted like it would turn half way then rock back. I then thought it was the starter and got a rebuild kit took it apart and the brushes were as good as the new ones in the kit so I didn't rebuild it. then I put the bike in gear on concrete and rocked it back and forth in gear and it then started went I tried it again.it worked just like it should for about 6 months and done the same thing. so I found this video and adjusted the cable like this says and after 1 turn no luck then 2 turns again no luck but on the third turn it worked and is starting like new again!!!thank god for the internet and guys who share these little things that drive us all nuts from time to time! there is no telling how many people took their bikes to dealers and paid out 200-300 bucks for some guy getting paid 12 bucks per hour to fix these bikes in 30mins making the bike shops rich when anyone could just turn that little 10 mm nut and fix it their self's! thanks so much man for sharing this to save lots of guys like me lots of money!

    I had starting issues with my 2003 1500 for several years. I went through several batteries and even adjusted the decomp cable as explained here, but that did not solve my issue. In the end, the fix was discovering the G-bat from GMan Industries. The battery is strong enough to overcome a bad decompression adjustment, and it is three times more powerful than the OEM battery. I have had zero starting problems since installing it and never worry about starting my motorcycle anymore.

    Everything you see in the video is underneath the air box, which is hidden beneath the two metal shells that "look like" a gas tank. The speedometer housing has to come off, small covers on each side of the steering head, then the gas tank looking covers, then the airbox. I think one of my other videos shows how to take it apart to get to the primary jets.

    The problem here is that the suggested adjustment in this video is only valid if the REAR Cylinder is not decompressing. If you have a situation where the FRONT (and rear) are not decompressing there is a primary adjustment right off the decompression solenoid that adjust basically the same way. Look for a cable coming down into the front cylinder just like the cable that goes to the rear cylinder except it only connects to the front. Follow it up about 2 or 3 inches and you'll see a different adjuster nut. This one literally allows greater lever action on the cam and will fix your starting decompression problem much better than what is shown in this video.

    If your out riding & this happens,(which it will),you can reach under the "fuel tank" blank on the rt. front. of the engine ,just ahead of the valve cover & put pressure on this cable while someone else holds clutch & presses starter button . Or hold clutch w/left hand ,cable w/ right & press starter button w/your nose . You'll look pretty ridiculous ,but it works and ,It'l get ya goin' in a pinch....Or park on a hill.

    D Dex, I'm not familiar enough with the front cylinder decompression to know if there is an adjustment. You say you removed the front plug and it started right up, so it sounds like it at least turned over without the front plug. I never had a problem with mine, and I no longer have the bike to look it over. I would suggest looking at the bottom of the solenoid where the short cable attaches to see if there is an adjustment there. Let me know what you find out.

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 5 lety

      I had a loose connection on my ground wire that temporarily kept me at a gas station. The bike just wouldn't start. I had the side cover off checking fuses when I wiggled the wire and heard an electrical "crackle" from the ground connection on the battery. I tightened up the bolt just a bit and the bike started right up. It's awkward to get under the battery cover to both check it and tighten it up, but a good place for you to start looking for a possible bad connection. If that's found to be good, follow the ground wire to where it connects to the bike and see if that connection is weak.

    The cylinder to cylinder cable per a Suzuki Repair manual for a 2003 and beyond shows the cable end next to the front cylinder should have 1 mm , 0.04" inch sideways play. So just loose beyond snug. Do this while both decompresor levers are held fully counter-clockwise while the the front cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke (both intake and exhaust valves are closed).

      This video is of a 1998 1500 Intruder, and I am not familiar with the workings of a 700 to know if it even has a decompression circuit. If the batter is good and all connections to the starter are good, I would look at the starter solenoid as the possible problem. Use a tester to see if the main starter wire is getting 12 volts when you press the starter switch to rule out a bad relay somewhere in the loop?

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 2 lety

      Hello Jeremy. I do not have a method of returning it to factory specs or that bike any longer. From my experience, if the cable is too tight it will not run normal due to the exhaust valves not being able to fully close. If the cable is too loose the bike will be hard to turn over. Counting threads could get you in the ballpark, but it could also vary from bike to bike. If you suspect it is too tight, try lengthening the cable by making it looser by perhaps a half a turn at a time and check how it starts and how it runs with each half turn. Eventually you will get to the point where it's too loose and will hang when trying to start. I'm sorry I don't have anything more solid to go by.

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 6 lety

      If it's not turning over at all, not even making the sound that it is trying to turn over, I would suspect the starter solenoid first. If the decompression cable is out of adjustment the bike sounds like it teeter-totters back and forth trying to turn over but can't quite do it. If all you are hearing is a click, check out your starter. Good luck!

      +Ronald Mcvey Check the connections on your starter if you can, or have someone who can. You might have to check all of your fuses to make sure one that is in the starter circuit is not blown out. There may also be switches such as whether or not you are in gear or have the clutch pulled in at fault. Make sure the red kill switch on the right handlebar is not in the off position. I hope these ideas get you started and maybe find your problem.

      No, I did not. I did not have a manual, so I went by judgment. I tightened the cable too much and it only ran on the front cylinder when I started it. So I backed it off between where it was before and where it didn't have enough slack in it to let the valve fully close.

      Mr. Poppins, the compression builds up in the rear cylinder when starting to the point the starter cannot turn the engine over. There is a compression release mechanism that makes it easier for the starter to do its job and turn the engine over. If the compression release mechanism is out of adjustment, some are putting their bikes in a higher gear and rolling the bike by pushing with the clutch engaged to try to get the rear piston to a point where the starter can do its job. I hope this explanation helps.

    Hey bud, I have a question you might be able to help me out with.
    So, I just bought a '94 Suzuki intruder VS 1400. When I got it, the starter solenoid was bad, so I replaced it, dealt with a clutch issue today, that I just resolved. Issue now is, when I kicked it into first, the starter started to crank over and the bike tried to haul off on me. I killed it from the ignition key. However, now I am back to the same issue, I crank on the starter, and it clicks. I can jump the bike if I touch a hot wire to the solenoid. I was reading somewhere, that with these intruders there's a propensity to burn out solenoids, something to do with the ignition module. Have you heard this? If so, any idea on how I can protect myself from this issue happening time and time again? I appreciate any feedback you can give me or any direction you might be able to point me in.

      +Zachary Burdick I wish I could help, Zachary, but I have no experience with this situation. It sure does sound dangerous, though. If you can't find information on what may be causing this I recommend you contact a shop or dealer that has the ability to track it down and fix it. I would not ride it like this. I hope you have good luck with it.

    08 suzuki boulevard c90t. Went to start bike and it wouldn't turn over but was trying then after a while battery went completely dead. Just today brought a battery and it turns on but wont turn over so all u hear it turn on but it wont turn over when u hit the starter it jus click and a few times before this i would have to play with the clutch some times to get it to start....

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 8 lety

      I believe there is a switch in the clutch lever that would keep it from starting without the clutch pulled in? I don't have my Suzuki anymore to test this out. But if you are hearing a clicking noise that means a relay is closing somewhere that likely leads to the starter turning over. So if you hear a clicking but the starter is not trying to turn the motor, I would wonder if the starter is going bad? You already ruled out the battery and it's connections which could be a culprit in this problem. My video shows the bike trying to start, but the compression is too much for the starter to spin all the way through. If yours isn't trying to spin at all, find a way or a shop to check the health of the starter? I wish I knew more about this situation for you.

      @contact4mwy7  Před 10 lety

      Hello James. I really wish I had a definite answer for you. So let's think about this. When it is having trouble, is it turning over completely or getting hung up like you hear in my video? You say that when you hook it to your car it starts good, so I am wondering when is the last time you changed the battery, and do you know for sure it is good? If the battery is not the issue, I would find a way to have the starter checked as it is the last link in the chain. I'd put my guess on the battery first though.

      James Peatson While I am not a battery expert, I would say more amps would equal more cranking power. Did you take your current battery to an auto parts store for testing? Hello Manuel. I go over the steps, maybe rather quickly, in this video. You will have to remove hex-head bolts around the gas cap and at the front of the bike. It is put together like a puzzle, and can be a bit annoying to put back together while aligning all of the holes, so I recommend leaving the bolts loose until all of the parts are in place and then tightening all of them up. If you cannot make sense of how to do this yourself, please seek out someone who can do this for you properly. czcams.com/video/vE5y99JYtL0/video.html

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 2 lety

      It would TRY to turn over, but the compression would prevent the cylinders from turning all the way. If yours isn't even doing that with a new battery, I would move on to the starter relay, starter. Have you checked all fuses?

      My son checked all the fuses.

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 2 lety

      @@tooele469 either power isn't getting to the starter, or the starter is the issue. I don't remember if it had a safety for the clutch to be pulled when in gear, which should bypass when it's in Neutral. If you can get to the starter and find the smaller wire that activates the starter solenoid you could put a meter on it to determine if it's getting power when the starter switch is pressed. Also check for power on the large wire that connects to the battery. Make sure the battery wire makes good connection on each end, same with the ground wire. I had a loose ground connection that prevented my bike from starting after I stopped at a store.
