  • Furtwängler-Eindrücke aus erster Hand. Doku von Ute Neumerkel. NEUE 18-Minuten-VERSION DEUTSCH & ENGLISH - NEW EXTENDED VERSION with ENGLISH SUBTITLES: • Furtwaengler's daughte... -

Friederike Kunz, the happy illegitimate daughter of Wilhelm Furtwängler, actress and mother of 7 sons, tells about her time with her father Wilhelm Furtwängler. Documentary by Ute Neumerkel. During her studies in Berlin she even lived together with Furtwaengler in Potsdam. With many photos of her archive and as background music excerpts directed by Furtwängler. A rewarding extract of two DVDs I, Ute Neumerkel, produced for her and her family at her home (with the kind permission of Friederike Kunz). -
A like, comment or any other promotion of an independent artist is most welcome.

I am in mourning for Friederike Kunz, the Furtwängler daughter who died 14th October 2017 at the age of 96. She had sponsored my Furtwängler Lieder CD edition, let me film her life story and allowed me to become her friend. She was such a loving and fascinating person. I saw her for the last time in July 2017 where we also could listen and watch together some of my latest videos and parts of my new piano tutorial. I am very thankful for all the precious time with her. Ute Neumerkel

Thank you! It was magical to see Furtwangler's daughter - the daughter of one of the greatest conductors who ever lived. He must have been very proud of her.

Dear English speaking fans of Wilhelm Furtwaengler, finally I translated this video for you! Unfortunately YT's engine for inserting subtitles does not work well. So the size of the letters is not equal, and sometimes the text is not completely visible. In this case please try the medium screen or another browser. But first of all, enjoy what Friederike Kunz has to share with us...

Serious musicians, in becoming more aware of Maestro Furtwangler's legacy - his life circumstances, his own music and his conductorial interpretations, could benefit, perhaps even enormously. Certainly, the prevailing, wide-spread stigma about a (non-existent; I believe) Nazi 'heart' connection should be finally put to rest and totally erased. Incidentally, it was a Bruckner recording which propelled me, long ago, into a great admiration for Maestro Furwangler's uniquely profound shaping of symphonic music. And I wish to hear his solo piano music and also songs, too (somewhat familiar with his lengthy symphonic Piano Concerto). Although I consider it very unfair that several stellar concert soloists created hands-off havoc regarding stalemating a proposed appointment with the Chicago Symphony in 1949, yet one can somewhat forgive those perpetrating, due to such unforgettably horrible Nazi history still near the forefront of their minds. I believe their frenzied fervency inputted an imbalance of thought regarding personal "guilt" - a concept, easier for some, to 'hop on the bandwagon', adhere to, and point a finger rather than check all the facts in Maestro Furtwangler's case. Although moot, he may have lived longer, profiting himself and the musical public, had he been able to keep his Chicago offer and come to the United States.

"Serious musicians, in becoming more aware of Maestro Furtwangler's legacy... could benefit, perhaps even enormously." Yes. "The prevailing, wide-spread stigma about a (non-existent; I believe) Nazi connection should be finally put to rest and totally erased." Yes. Difficult to say whether Furtwangler may have lived longer. I suppose that his ears getting deaf were perhaps the most important factor for no longer be willing to live.
