00:00 Intro
01:16 The top artists by the numbers
09:43 Conclusion
So 2022 is coming to an end and I think we’re in the middle of an interesting place in the music industry right now. A lot of the superstars that defined the last 10 years of music aren’t getting old exactly but they’re not as ambitious with their musical output anymore. The big stars? They’ve already had their run of number 1 albums, their critical acclaim, they’re not trying to “conquer” anymore. So you have this void where the new generation of superstars is still ramping up and figuring out what their career is gonna look like, the current superstars are either absent or not chasing big hits right now. From Drake’s Honestly Nevermind to Kendrick’s Mr. Morale and J Coles The Fall Off being just kind of quieter, more lowkey, less commercially ambitious albums to Kanye going off the rails in terms of album quality and Travis Scott and ASAP Rocky being under the radar for the past 4+ years and someone like Post Malone who was once a major force in music pretty much giving up on his albums…I really do think we’re in a lull right now in terms of superstar artists actually putting out music. At the same time we’re also dealing with the lost potential of all the insanely popular young stars who’ve died in the last few years from X and Juice Wrld to Pop Smoke and King Von and how those artists who WERE on the way up just don’t have any music left to be released. So in this video I just wanna look at the actual real hard numbers and see what can we learn about where music is right now, where it’s gonna be going in the next few years and which artists are really here to stay.
if you see this request $10 on cashapp, $volksgeist, first 5 people to do it get $10

$uicideBoy$ being top 30 is wild. Love what I’ve heard from them but it’s so wild seeing that they have more streams than groups like BTS
Their demographic is extremely loyal to their music. just check their wrapped stats. they posted they had 2.1b streams on spotify with only 26m listeners which is absurd. The personal connection of their music with their fans (including me) and their amazing replay value rlly earned them a valid spot. Love them
Turned the world grey
Wonders of the Tiktok generation
Groups like bts are being pushed on the people
Every time I’m at a festival they’re on main stage & most rock music listeners bump them too
not a fan of youngboys’ music but gotta give him his props for being #2
YB better.
This is only for the US, Bad Bunny has been by far the biggest artist in the world this year
Agree. Bad bunny, Kanye West, and Drake have been the most played around the world in the last years
BB actually had 2 TIMES MORE STREAMS THAN DRAKE 😂
Most people in the US dont listen to bad bunny
@@notashark8069 they do btw, he was the 3rd most streamed artist in usa on youtube
@@alanramirez484 Maybe latinos but most dont. I can bet most american schools have no idea who that guy is.
While I do truly think Harry Styles is overhyped and overpromoted, I think his streams are impressive considering that his catalogue is only like 40 songs. He only has three albums and the longest has 13 songs only.
I mean he had literally been in one of the biggest boy bands of all time to start his career so not a surprise at all
Kendrick out streaming most of the industry including superstars like harry styles is absolutely incredible
kendrick isnt a small artist tho. hes legit one of the biggest artists oat
@@shnye i think he meant a RAP ARTIST who was on a 5 year hiatus out streaming a POP STAR who's been active during that period
Definitely agree with the shift in the female pop artist. Expectations are different now and the landscape has changed a ton in just a few years. That would be a cool video.
It's crazy that Youngboy has 2 times more streams than Harry Styles
ts one of the few times i support yb
young boy def uses bots bc nobody is listening to his music 💀
@@BoxOfCurryos has a lot of younger kids listening to him
Youngboy is simply the greatest artist of our generation
@@BoxOfCurryos helllaaa ppl listen to yb
I love Volksgeist content! The quality is so good, it feels like you're watching a documentary on national geographic. The videos have a common aesthetic and vibe that's easy to follow and keeps viewers engaging and in a entertaining flow. My only strong suggestion is the awkward side eye movement every couple seconds can make viewers uncomfortable so maybe trying a less zoomed in camera angle could help. None the less keep up the amazing videos I look forward to the next.
The Beatles haven’t dropped an album in over 50 years! So many young people still don’t even know who they are, still so many hits to be in the top streams of the year.
Is this list worldwide or just the US, because if it is only US, there is no comparison between NBA YoungBoy numbers vs the Weeknd/Harry Styles type of artist in a worldwide level
Probably US. Bad bunny was the most streamed artist on Spotify globally this year again, so if it was global streams he should be number one
@@samueloforigeywu9110 that's what I thought, so maybe the comments that harry styles is over promoted are not correct, I'm not from the US and most of the artists of the list are basically unknown, other than Drake, bad Bunny, the Weeknd, harry Styles, the obvious ones
First video I watch from your channel and it was SIMPLY AMAZING. Looking forward to more content like this.
Thank you!
What a well put together video. Great content chief!!!
I love how X and Peep still there it sucks we didn’t get to see them reach their peaks they were definitely a good chunk of what could have been a moving and flourishing renaissance that gained traction but faded
I actually think Juice WRLD would have gotten in or closer to the Top 3 if most of his fans didn't stream a lot of his unreleased catalogue haha. Even I, I keep all my plays logged through "last fm" and only around 2/10 of my plays were from his released stuff.
Thank you for your dedication
Great videos man! Love your thoughts and perspective
Tbh I don’t give much credence to streaming numbers. They can be inflated by playlists and label support; and if a artist has an younger fan base they’ll likely steam more. What proves an artists success to me is their touring. How many dates and how many tickets are you selling. This is the only metric that can’t be fudged.
Saying Kanye’s album quality has went off the rails in the last 4-5 years is a little harsh. Jesus IS King was only ok but Ye, Kids See Ghosts and Donda are great albums
facts
true
Pop smoke could've been modern day 50 cent frr. He would have been huge.
When he was alive he wasnt getting love i followed him on instagram and a day later he died. It wasnt until the summertime of 2020 people caught on
Dior Dior jacket
Been sayin this: Future walked so guys like Thug, Baby, Gunna, so on and so forth, could run. Hands down the Godfather and GOAT of trap
disrespectful to thug
Thug did his own thing rubbed off on Uzi and Carti
Wasn’t Wayne first ??
thug ran before future walked and I love both
Thug and Future were in the same generation 💀
Dave is going to be the next legendary rapper, he’s so good, please don’t stupidly overlook him just because he’s English. If he was American he’d already be hailed up there with people like J Cole, he is one of the best lyrical rappers worldwide and can also make chill rap music, Afrobeats music, electronic rap music etc. Still only 24 years old and been around since 2015
I feel like I would love his music but it’s just so jarring to hear the accent. What’s weird is English female rappers like little simz feels natural to me, but the males for some reason just sound… weird.
I think you really underestimate how big the group of casual music listeners is and how much they play older songs of artists.
That Chris brown slander was kinda out of pocket
where is this list from. no name, reference or context. looking at the spotify numbers this doesn't add up at all
Crazy how ed Sheeran is not top 10, considering he toped the spotify listener amount for quite some time this year (or last year, not sure)
that's a huge W for music
@@abartel6 safe
2022 is a great year for music.
this list isn't saying that much, it's US only. ik y'all like to be the center of attention but your streaming numbers ain't doing much when looking at worldwide
YOU SAID THE FALLOFF
THE 7 HELLS ARE NOT HOT ENOUGH FOR YOU FOOL
Love u tho great vid lol
ong, one of his best albums. the disrespect is crazy.
The fact Rod Wave and Youngboy got more streams than Kendrick this year makes me hate the average music listener 😂
Youngboy deserves it
ngl I loved kendrick back in around 2013, but this last album just wasn't as good and I don't know many friends over here that still listen to it really. Not bad I guess but not memorable imo. YoungBoy has dropped a bit in quality too imo after starting to drop 5-6 projects a year instead of focussing on his best stuff to release. f you really listen to him and try to not be biased it's actually pretty nice tbh. And a lot of his songs do get you hyped. But maybe it just doesn't speak to you in that way
Wait which chart did you use because I went to look at the billboard one and it’s quite different. Still a great video though. Please link the article and references.
Pop is not pop music anymore, which is kind of funny. Rap is pop music. We might have to find another name for pop as a genre eventually.
Yeah look how many rap artist there are. This should just be top rap artist featuring some other pop stars
The hate for Chris brown is just sad
BTS fans mostly use CZcams for streaming because of translations so I'm not really surprised Yeat beat em out lol
Can you tell me (or somebody in the comments ) what app do you use for your making visuals, beacuse they are so clean and I would like to use it aswell.
This video makes me not care about pop rap or the music industry, most of these artists don’t deserve the success they have and coast off of trends. Why is it a surprise that we still listen to albums that are 2+ years old? That’s what liking musical artists is.
Most do some don’t
I don’t listen to YoungBoy but he has a super loyal fans base that’s dope.
Future deserves all his flowers, man was putting out music for YEARS before really seeing a return.
Can you make an “Understanding Lil Dirk” video? I didn’t know that he was an established artist 10 years ago
He would have been rapping in O-block since his teens I assume so it makes sense.o
I've been kinda on and off following him since 2012 cause I'm from Chicago so a lot of those guys were super popular over here. I kinda forgot about durk for like 2 years and then was shocked to see him pop off on Laugh Now Cry Later with Drake a few years ago. Makes me happy though
I know someone already said it in the comments, but this list is just for the US, globally speaking, Bad Bunny was the most streamed artist of 2022
you should make a THE STORY OF SABA!
Juice made to much music but as a fan I can’t complain all I can say is I miss him every second
I'm surprised BTS didn't make the top list because how their fans are doing mass streaming and they trend daily on Twitter
love
How ironic that Drake has more streams than anyone else, he hasn’t dropped anything more than mid in years
Her Loss was great. Dark Lane Demo Tapes was pretty good too.
Y'all just hate for the sake of it
Drake is the undisputed 🐐and most people are fan of him. Don't let the social media hate make you think otherwise.
Curious where you got this list from as I'm struggling to find it online. Also curious if it's world wide or just US based. If anyone knows can you link me please?
This is just a US based list. It may just be billboard numbers. Not 100% but definitely a U.S list. In reality acts like Bad bunny surpass Drake.
@@d7863 thanks man. yeah i kinda figured the international list would be as rapper heavy
Ok my brother!
Love how The Weeknd isn’t literally leading the group of artist who carried in 2022
Considering this list is mostly likely from the US, it's not surprising to see hip hop and rap artists at the very top, even higher than the biggest pop artists of last year. But if its worldwide the top would be dominated by mostly pop
I like this thumbnail a lot more
Need a Travis Scott album, Asap Rocky album , Frank Ocean album ....
Time for me and my crew to set up to the plate 🏴☠
Where did u get the list? Everywhere I look the list says Bad Bunny, Taylor, Drake, Weeknd, BTS (in that order)
Edit: also tried finding a list that's only US specific, it still dosent change the list much. Only difference is country and non pop hiphop get a boost but still not what we're seeing in the list you used.
the fact that zach bryan streamed in the top 50 is crazy to me
im so tired of people saying kanye fell off. everyone says Ye was bad but forget he made Kids See Ghosts at the same time, possibly his best album. Donda may not have been his best, but its incredible and mindblowing in its own way. have you listened to off the grid? believe what i say? jail? hurricane? come to life? it goes on. i understand that JIK was kinda a flop and yeah hes losing his shit right now like he always does.... and he may not come back from this, but all this literally just happened. hes been making incredible music the last 4 years and nobody can deny that.
Can you put up your source? I'm having a hard time believing this. Especially since both apple music and spotify saying that Bad Bunny was the most streamed artists on their platforms
Billboard ranking
@@Volksgeist billboard rankings say Bad Bunny is #1 and NBA youngboy is #23...
Where is your source boss?
Love him or Hate him you can't deny Youngboys talent
Man called the off season the fall off
I know it’s not your bag but calling glass animals the worst radio music around hurt me in my chest 😭
This dude is corrupted,,🚮
Yeah they make some good music
What’s the source of the numbers?
Looks like you’re showing US streams and making it look WW streams.
@Volksgeist, Could u please do the same thing for 2024? I feel like so much has changed in the last year.
Harry album is almost 3x platinum tho I don't really like Harry styles but physical is more important similar to Adele,Beatles and situation yeat.
We need to replace all of them. We need another wave of new inspiration, like the soundcloud era
Yo wassup
Kinda funny when I saw Tyler live we were making fun of the ads around the stadium for the imagine dragons show the next week
You need to give us a source. Google sent me to a Reddit post when I searched up this list and that's all, that's pretty lame of a source, not gonna lie.
Not to say that some of these claims are pretty wild. I get that you are more of a hip-hop fan, but don't discredit Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles when they both have 60+ million monthly listeners on Spotify, while NBA YoungBoy has 17+ million. They are all successful and great, but the numbers don't add up. Kinda fishy.
Great, cyberpunk dystopia coming and no new stars.
Just fucking great.
Thank god for Griselda life changing music right there
9:16 I feel like the neighborhood doesn't deserve to be named in this sentence
I don't think I'll ever understand the Eminem hate or lack of appreciation but my only album when I was 10 was Eminem so maybe I'm just really biased.
Thanks for the $10 bro❤️
Bro saying Eminem is bad even when he is second most lissened to rapper in world right now 💀 And he is sold most rap records ever and in top 5 sells of alltime of any genre
Most Dope forever
im predominantly a hiphop fan but the way you talk about "boring pop stuff" is disrespectful for no reason.
i think showing drake and tyler when you discussed the past years superstars not dropping as much or being as innovative was wrong. tyler is always going to be creative and has a set album schedule so he’s always going to drop no matter what. drake just dropped 3 albums in a very short amount of time with one being a house album and the other a collab album. i think it was unfair to show them
Dude. Posty is FAR from over. Hollywood's Bleeding was a GOAT album. Despite TCTA being a flop, I'm 100% confident he'll make a comeback in the future.
mac demarco just retired too 💔
Jack Harlow has a really good discography if u take time to listen
kanye still is making great music like ksg, donda, ye
Welp... not biased, not at all... 😆. Love how the real/official numbers slap you in the face.
they not gone like that post malone take
Abel was great 💎
Nice video but dude, don’t brush off glass animals as boring pop. I agree they have a massively overplayed song but they have a really decent catalogue if you look further into it :(
And also yeat been making music since 2016
And then there is Future who is just as hungry as when he started off
Why is lil baby’s picture Pittsburgh 😭😭
This list was literally so biased smh
Nah the video, kinda just skip over some artist and only talk about rap. Not saying to not talk about rap tho.
Wait what?? Post Malone didn’t “give up”… He literally released an album This Year and “I Like You” has been in the top 10 for several weeks.
He meant artistically
Please stop saying Aboogie like that bro you’re killing me , great video tho as usual 😂
bad bunny yea yea yea yeaaa
juice isn’t finished he still has tons of music in the vault they j not dropping it
5:05 Eminem isn't as great anymore but I do think there are people that enjoy hearing rappers just rap for fun on albums like MTBMB, it definitely has lows but I can see how many people would enjoy the project.
i do not know a single person that listens to youngboy but i'm not from the US so that might be it. i don't think he would be in the top of streams worldwide
Hey now, imagination dragons are the goats
What about independent artist. Like upchurch
Go listen to Zamdane
No wayyyyyy YoungBoy surpassed Bad Bunny. I can't believe this. Bad Bunny is huge everywhere. All the girls love him, all the guys vibe to him he's just an international superstar. Idk I'm just baffled. Good on him tho.
It does make sense in a U.S market that it could be possible. I think this list is U.S based. If it was world wide then the numbers would be different. In reality Bad bunny had more streams than NBA and Drake
@@d7863 No he doesn’t this was global streams, he just gets a lot of press.
0:32 ah yes the fall off by j cole
Juice WRLD Was Different Breed 🔥
this has to be american numbers, because this doesn't make sense internationally
