  • The MX-5 Miata has been around for four generations. With the introduction of the ND MX-5/Miata, we gathered all four generations for a back to back drive. Along the way we discuss the history, changes, and most-enjoyable versions of this icon. In the end we find some surprises, and discover we still don't agree about this car.
This was the ND.1, before the RF or the updated engine.

I have a 1995 Miata. Friends sometimes make fun of me, BUT.......1) It's fully paid, 2) very cheap to maintain, 3) cheap on gas especially since I only drive it to work and don't need the unnecessary space, 4) cheap on insurance, 5) easy to park and drive around the city, and 6) it's a convertible during summer.
I stopped caring what everybody else think.

@Private Notitia oh no the rice is self aware. 😂 in all seriousnrss, do whatevet you think looks good. I personally would love an NA, with a forced induction system, cold air intake, new suspension, smaller wheels, and a new front bumper. All said and done i could get a used one with all those mods for under 12000 and i might just do that. If you like what you want to do, do it! Dont care what anyone thinks, its your car and you should love it.

The 17 inch rims and tyres have much more diameter than the original 14s. That increases the gear end ratio, dramatically afecting acceleration and recuperation times, not to talk about handling, the car sits higher than it should. I think those rims and tyres rather miss the point in an mx5.

My wife and I just bought a low mile 2001 NB a week ago. Great condition, great drive. My wife never drove a manual and she's been practicing every day because she wants to autocross after her first experience as a ride-a-long at a local event 2 weeks ago. This toy is all smiles all the time. The turn-in is so quick, and the brakes are great. I don't know why I've waited so long to buy one!

@onurgultekin5037 it is with a certain level of sadness that we sold it last April after nearly 5 years of ownership. We drove it down to our Az home from NW Indiana, and there it sat for nearly 4 years. She didn't want to drive it in Az traffic because she felt unsafe in it. She said it was too slow, too small, and too unsafe for her in an area where people drove 85mph while staring at their phones. We put around 15 thousand miles on it in about 5 years. All it ever needed was basic fluid flushes, a new set of Continental ExtemeContacts, and an upgraded clutch. We did install LED headlamps and a Pioneer head unit and speakers. The car was sold with its original stereo, and Bose speakers to its next owner, a Miata aficionado. We didn't sell it to just anyone.

Making the ND soft was actually a smart move for mazda because they know their customer base. Softer suspension is gonna be more comfortable for the people that are buying it for the sake of a cheap and fun roadster. And anyone buying a miata for performance is gonna end up putting coilovers on it regardless of what it comes with stock. Mazda knows this so they didnt waste putting stiff suspension on it. As long as the chassis is good, then im not complaining about suspension. That is my theory :)

Also a lot of countries in Europe have narrow, uneven roads. A lot of reviewers over here have claimed that the Bilsteins that come with the 2.0 litre model are too stiff and hurt your back, and that the softer shocks that come with the 1.5 are better.

    • @varmastiko2908
      @varmastiko2908 Před rokem +4

@@jonboyjon1976 Indeed and it's always very difficult to try to make a factory suspension softer. Aftermarket stuff is almost always stiffer so unless the car manufacturer takes into account bad roads which are the norm in many countries, then owners will never be able to make the car work on the roads they actually drive on.

Modern automatic transmissions shift faster than you can manually - you'll never see a manual Tesla - but most of us don't drive a Miata for speed. I drive a Miata because it's fun, and because it connects me to driving like nothing I've driven other than a motorcycle.

Cool review and all but why are you guys using 5th gear to pass a truck? I've been driving miata's for years and they accelerate a lot faster than that. Plus as Zhemin said the shifter location and the RPM clearly indicates the car is in 5th and NOT 3rd, you can't fool miata owners, we actually push our cars. Kind of dissapointed that your reviewers don't know how to drive miatas.

I enjoyed the love that you guys gave one of my favorite cars. I do think y'all nailed exactly what this car is all about for the most part. I do disagree with your assertion that it is not the car to be fastest on a mountain road. My 96 in SCCA e street trim. Which was for me cheap KYB shocks, a front away bar, and 15x6 wheels with dunlop direzza zIIs was always the fastest on all the mountain roads around here. I totally know that all of the more expensive cars that let me by had more potential the miata is just so easy to drive and never touch the brakes. On a mountain road that translates to a very quick pace.

Actually the 1.5l version ND is perfectly fine for the european market. Here, it costs way more to mantain a car, in taxes, insurance etc. Also, gas costs 2.5 times more. The 1.5l also gets softer suspention here (the 2.0 has stiff springs), which is more comfortable for road use. And on average, on the road, it's a pretty fast car.

When my dad passed away from a work accident his Miata was really all I got to remember him by. I paid my siblings 2g each and it was worth every Penny and 3x more. It’s in amazing condition and I absolutely love this car more than anything in the world. It’s the only thing I outright own without anyone else having any say over it. Only my name on the title, which is very satisfying. It’s also the most fun I’ve had in any of my cars and the first non hatchback I’ve owned. I loved my MkIII and my Sonic turbo, but this is just a different kind of car love. Both sentimental love, of the highest order, and mechanical love for all the smiles it’s brought to me. I can’t say enough good things about it. P.s. I’m 6’4” and while I kinda have to splay my legs around the steering wheel it isn’t bad at all. My first roadster was a 1960 Triumph TR-3, purchased back in the late 1960s when the car was already nearly worn out and had to be extensively repaired, including rebuilding the engine. When gasoline costs soared in the late 1970s I bought an MG Midget, which I drove for about five years. I acquired my first Mazda in 1987, an RX-7. This car was not a convertible; so, in 1994 I bought a Miata, which I held onto until 2014. Living in the Northeast part of the U.S. the one great problem was body rust, even though the vehicle was garaged daily. My new 2014 Miata is a wonderful car, with a retractible hard top. I am hoping to keep it until I am hauled away to a rest home and my driver's license is taken away from me.

+Edward Dodson Its a shame the British car industry went the way it did. I think in 20 years time Triumphs, English MGs and Austins will only exist in wealthy collectors collections. I think it's hard for my generation (post-90's) to get into the classic roadsters with the high costs, bad build quality and general unreliability of British cars, it's just sad. There are so many beautiful British cars (even up to early 2000's) that will die out due to the scary costs. Think Clarkson said it best but why buy British and take the costs/risks/unreliability of a British built car when the Japanese will produce a vastly superior car with similar looks at often half or a third of the long term cost?
It's a real shame. Survival of the fittest and all that but it's a damn shame to see British styling touches imitated but I guess so long as Zagato exists I can rest happily 😁

    • @nthperson
      @nthperson Před 7 lety +3

My `1994 Miata rusted out, just like the old British cars, and it had other design problems. The 2014 version is so much better in so many ways. Perhaps the best way to enjoy the old British roadsters is to buy a replica version.

+mojostevo EXACTLY!!!! I cringed when I saw those wheels, and I cringed when he said its a 90 riding on its original suspension components. Fact is, the NA is a car 100% about handing, and unsprung weight is absolutely critical to its handling and feel. Also, its well known that the original shocks usually are DONE by 50,000 miles. If these guys drove that car, then jumped in my 95 NA with proper lightweight 15" wheels, Flyin' Miata springs and Tokico Illumina shocks (everything else stock), their jaw would drop. If they think that NA was fun and communicative, they have no idea what a properly maintained NA can feel like.
One of them also said they thought that high-speed sweepers was where the NA shines. Uh ... maybe that one, but again,a properly sorted NA BEGS to be hammered on the tightest twisties you can find ... zing it to redline, upshift zing again, then HARD on the brakes, heal-toe downshift, left, right, left, 4 wheel drifts, back up thru the gears, mile after mile ... all day long ... my car smiles and thanks me and says "more please" when I drive it like that ...can you tell I LOVE my NA?

having done shotokan karate with a Japanese gentleman (the instructor) I learned a little about their culture. appropriately today is Jan.1, the Japanese believe in doing the thing you are most passionate about first (in your waking moments) on the first day of the new year. this will translate into doing that thing you love most, more :) kinda smart when you think about that. so at 4 or 5 in the morning we would meet at the Dojo, organize and head to either Miami Beach or Crandon Park beach (on the bay side) and do a sunrise karate class. what does karate have to do with miatas? IT IS NOT ABOUT EITHER. it is about Passion, Feeling, peeling away all the extra stuff that will mask the essence of the true flavor of what ever it is you are doing! in the case of the Miata it is driving "the drive" simple pure and satisfying, a roadster. i never believed or understood till I got a miata mine is a NB and if you ever have done any thing where it all comes together even for a split second like getting all of a fastball on the sweet part of a bat and hitting a home run. preforming a kata (Kanku dai) the single kata that defines Shotokan karate, as well as you can with passion and fire in your heart, when it is over you arrive at a moment of peace, satisfaction and comfort that is hard to put into words. my miata NB with its essence of the NA on a good windy country road with beautiful nature feels the same way while I am driving it and the same way when i am done. Look into the the Japanese culture: garden, flower arrangement, food, karate, art, and you will see how an extremely smart and complex people see the world and strive to live richly (i am not talking money here) that is reflected in the spirit of the miata, which is why people around the world love the little thing so much.
To put it in terms of western thought the Porsche 911 has a lot of Hegel and some Nietzsche, the Miata has a lot of Nietzsche and some Hegel.

One of the more informative videos with excellent c&c on different generations while I shop for a roadster to scratch my drivers itch. Thanks for that guys. However, it kind of leaves me wondering how a c&c might be between the top factory iteration of each gen would stack up, especially with the 2019 models providing some more juice under the hood, but then, this is the first of your videos of I've seen...so far. Also, would like to see the Fiat version thrown in for good measure. Having once owned a '79 2000 Spider, I sorely long to reproduce the fun I had cutting countryside curves in Ol' "Boris," sans the mechanical issues of course. Soon I hope to return again.
Nevertheless, thanks again for the video.

I bought my first MX-5 two months ago, a. 2010 Mk III (NC)then of course watched this video afterwards. I am extremely pleased with my experience with my purchase, and also that I watched the video After!
It a great “documentary”, showing your experiences and expectations.
If I had watched it prior to my decision, this would have ensured that I never would have made my mind up.
As for fun-buy one while you can.
Watch the video first, then make a “decision” to buy the one you think would suit your lifestyle you expect also your body size. The MX-5 is NOT feasible for the “larger”(you know who I am referring to) person. Or if you want anonymity, people will wave and smile at you, they will approach you in a car park.

Interesting idea... The MR2 generations are vastly different from each other however... The 1st Gen is a hotwheels car for the street, 2nd is an affordable exotic, and the 3rd is a mid engine Miata! These aren't very in-depth short analysises of the MR2 generations but, they get the idea across. They are pretty different.

I have a 2 litre NC MX-5 with the sports suspension and I absolutely love it.
This was one of the last few made with tweaks to the engine and body styling.
I believe that it has 167 bhp as the rev counter goes to 7200.
Am I right in thinking this.
Did the final tweaks to this type of engine increase the bhp as well as the rev range?

While I understand why you picked that NA, it's too bad you didn't pick a later version of the NA with the 1.8l engine. I think it may have ended up being y'all's favorite.
Having said that, I had a 1999 NB that I left in stock form, but autocrossed (SCCA class CS) and took on many open lapping days at local tracks, and I can attest to how great a learning car this is. You _must_ learn how to carry speed through - and out of - each corner, because there isn't 400hp on tap to pull you out. Running the correct line, hitting the apex, tracking out... this car is perfect for learning how to drive fast. I won a number of local autocross championships in that stock NB, and I could run a full season of AX and open lapping days with only one set of race tires and a set of break pads. About $1,200 all in for a long season of serious fun.
I sold that NB and bought a 2007 Porsche Cayman. That Cayman is like a Miata on steroids and it is amazing... but to run it like I did the Miata costs about 4 times as much!

It wasn't supposed to be a fast car its not a porche and the 1.5 liter engine does the job just fine you don't even need the bigger engine. I like it how they kept it a Miata and just didn't go crazy with the amount of horse power.

As a NC owner i would say that the chassis is just too good and well balanced that makes feel you feel safer and push the limits harder... It did Nurburgring under 8 min with stock engine. No turbos or superchargued were needed... NA and NB are maybe more fun because they are a bit smaller and all is less filtered but performance wise NC is the best of them and still fun to drive.

I feel like the Miata being sold as a “teacher for driving” is why it always is under powered. Because if it was a little more aggressive you couldn’t correct your mistakes and learn finesse. But honestly they should make 2 different versions one for aggression and another for the purists.

I'm happy with the power, what I wish they'd make is a raw "outdoors" or rally version that you could leave the top down on even in the pouring rain. Waterproof interior with drain holes in the floorboard and seats with slots in them where they wouldn't puddle up. There have been plenty of times the wife and I have been riding around here in the boiling hot southeast and the rain kicked up but we still wanted to keep the top down. Another thing I'd like to see (I own a NC power retractable top) is just a lighter made retractable (not removable) hardtop that a couple could operate manually.

The NC is my favorite miata. It feels good and the weight is hardly noticeable. It's also a lot quicker than the others. The chassis feels less flimsy. I also think it looks the best in certain trims. I've yet to drive the ND though.

Awesome move. Miata did (and does) it right. It is the world's most underrated sports car, and frankly, let's keep it that way for the pricing. -TSM
