    Funny thing with Gerry Anderson's shows- very few of them (and I can't think of any outside of Space 1999) got more than one season. I think that's part of what makes them so endearing, outside of the obvious quality- whether by design or bad luck, they never outstayed their welcome.

      Thunderbirds technically did, but the 2nd season was only 6 episodes and it's often treated all as one season in box sets etc.

    It was a bit of a trope even in the '60s, eg Mission Impossible every week, The Prisoner's The Chimes of Big Ben, The Avengers' Pandora, Star Trek's The Mark of Gideon. My favourite episode: Winged Assassin, with its recap of the first episode and the futuristic airliner recreated and used as a battering ram and the SPV trying to knock out its tyres.

    For what it's worth it wasn't just Ed Bishop who crossed over from "Captain Scarlet" to "UFO". David Healey, Paul Maxwell, Jeremy Wilkin and Gary Files who did voices for "Captain Scarlett" (they were all in this episode) also appeared in "UFO" and I suspect there were others. And as you've also done "Blake's 7" Jeremy Wilkin was Dev Tarrant in Episode One "The Way Back".

    Off the top of my head, I'd go for Winged Assassin and Big Ben Strikes Again as my favourite episodes - the first because having the Mysterons win an engagement added an element of unpredictability going forwards, and the second because of the neat and clever way everything comes together.

    Airwolf had a similar episode in the first season; Stringfellow Hawke is made to believe that he was in a helicopter crash and has been in a coma for the better part of a year, and during that time his brother St John was rescued so he no longer needs to keep Airwolf - he is then persuaded to give up Airwolf's hiding place.

    Congratulations Alexa. You’ve completed Captain Scarlet. I look forward to your reaction to the CGI remake. My favourite episodes are Point 783, Avalanche and Crater 101.
    If you’re interested, there are 3 Captain Scarlet audio adventures by Big Finish Audios for you to listen to, 2 super space theatre movies (Captain Scarlet VS the Mysterons and Revenge of the Mysterons from Mars) and I’ve done a video listing the top 10 guest vehicles from the show.

    PS: The puppet of the Mysteron agent will be one of the main cast in the Joe 90, that is voiced by Keith Ford from UFO.
    All someone has to do is take the audio from Ford and Straker talking to each other and spliced it on this scene where Blue and Colgan talking to each other, to make it seen like Captain Blue is talking to Sam Loover.
    My favourite episode is *Seek and Destroy* .
    And my favourite Thunderbirds episode is *The Uninvited*

    I'm glad you had a great time watching this! You can see why this series was ripe for a reboot in mid 2000s. Gerry wanted to reboot Thunderbirds but that property was already tied up in a live action feature that he had no part in developing. Scarlet was the next best one to get a reboot, utilising (at the time) state of art computer animation and motion capture and would unfortunately be the last series he would work on.

      It might have been in the TV21 comics, but I seem to remember a story where the mysterons were dying and they asked to be allowed to die in peace.
      But Scarlet/Spectrum refused, saying they couldn't risk it, and destroyed the Mysteron's Martian base.
      I thought that was how Captain Scarlet ended, but I guess the Mysterons came back, and more cross than ever.

    As to what you were saying at the end, I think my uncle had recorded Captain Scarlet for me before I was even born. It's a comfort show for me too and I've been trying to write an article for my student journal about it and its quite unique non-Wellsian style of science fiction for a while. My favourite episodes would be the Lunarville episodes for their very noir feel and the interesting cast of characters including SID, Linda Nolan and of course Lunar Controller and Orson, who I suspect were not Mysteron agents per se. Very much a Cuban missile crisis allegory. Thanks so much for reviewing this show and I look forward to following your other content.

    Hi Alexa. Glad you enjoyed this classic series. It's a personal favourite of mine. In regards to you mentioning "SCARLET" and "UFO" (another favourite) in the same review. Well done. If you recall, in at least two episodes of "UFO" namely "The man who came back" and "The Psychobombs," Dr. Jackson outlines his own theories about the alien conscience, which, in hindsight, was very similar to the Mysterons. So, even though regarded (correctly) as two different series, there is a simalarity. In other words, as I say, one can look upon "UFO" as a live-action version of "CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS." As for the Ed Bishop connection, ("Blue" in "Scarlet," "Straker" in "UFO" ) well, I met him once. Got a few items autographed, which I still have. He was a really lovely man. God bless him. In regards another Supermarionation series, I can highly reccommend the classic "JOE 90." Yes, another favourite. S.I.G. Alexa.

    • @mistergeneration
      @mistergeneration Před 24 dny +2

      I think that Captain scarlet was the main series Gerry wanted to produce and he wanted to do it live action.. UFO looks like the story he had to tell instead because he’d already done the puppet show… which is a shame because I feel that scarlet had the better premise of the two and the would have loved to see it live action…. That being said, maybe not at the expense of the puppet show coz it’s sooo good.
      Anyway, that’s my take 😊

    Hello Again Alexa sadly no spectacular ending in this Episode produced 31st in Production Order at the time but always screened as the final Episode. As this story is told mostly in flashbacK it has just 7 Minutes of new footage in total. At the time "The Inquisition " was being filmed Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and their wonderful creative team had already begun work on their next Supermarionation Series "Joe 90".

  • @mistergeneration
    @mistergeneration Před 24 dny +1

    OKAY! I really enjoyed that reaction series. Thank you Alexa (wait.. that phrases sounds familiar 🤔)
    Anyway.. a few points in response.. 1) the Trap is an awesome episode.. up with Expo 2068 the action sequences are superb and taking the sci fi genre and creating new experiences with it,.. I guess maybe due to the Power Pack (jet pack) activity .. yeah.. add the pilot episode in there. My favourite episode is Big Ben Strikes again.. because of the tension and build up.. and final climax, music score, ingenious plot and the subtle fact that you don’t see Captain Scarlet until after the break when he not been shown to have survived in the previous episode Winged Assassin…
    Expo 2068 a close second, mostly because of the final scenes ..
    As for UFO girls being better than Angels .. yeah, human vs puppets, but I found the Angels had more class and less objectified in their costumes.. which I’m not usually bothered by but UFO was slightly overkill (due to plot reasons) and it just gives the angels the edge because they were fighter pilots too.. and maybe more attractive faces even (maaaaybee, lol)
    Finally on to New Captain Scarlet… PLEASE PLEASE watch Captain Scarlet the Return of the Mysterons .. it’s a 5-10 minute demo that was created before New Captain Scarlet (NCS),.. I thought it was very good .. and really wanted a series of it, but we got NCS instead and to be honest, it wasn’t for me (*understatement💀*).. but will be interesting to see how you find it seeing that you liked the OG scarlet so much. So, I’ll check it out if you decide to do the series 😊.
    Again, thanks for the series, I pretty much marathoned most of it after watching the first one a while back.

    It's a close call between Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet as to which was my favourite Anderson show. Nothing will ever be better than Thunderbird 2, but I was slightly older when watching Captain Scarlet, so I think I related more to the characters and the greater realism of the show. And as one of the few kids in my school wearing glasses, being called Brains, became very irritating, and probably quite detrimental. In the early 1970's there was something of a moral panic surrounding violence in kids tv shows, none of which made sense to us kids. Captain Scarlet was one show singled out, but so was Tom and Jerry, and it was as though kids only watched kids shows, so proscriptions made little sense.

    • @mistergeneration
      @mistergeneration Před 24 dny +2

      Captain Scarlet is ridiculously violent for a kids show.. but unlike, say, anime.. it was realistically violent.. and the emotionalism was kept low in the show.. as was illustrated when they ramped up the emotionalism in Attack on Cloudbase in comparison… which was a format lot of people seemed to prefer, go figure
      Anyway, whilst I was flipping out of the violence in Scarlet at the age of 12,.. mates in my school were watching Alien, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Robocop.. soooo , there was that… and when anime came over,.. that was the start of a new era 💀💀

    Really enjoyed seeing your reactions, especially to the sets and costumes - things I totally overlooked before but will now pay much more attention to!
    If you're seeking a 'propper' ending, There was a really good edit of the previous episode (featuring the attack on cloudbase) released on VHS back in the day. It removed any hint of a dream sequence, so the mysterons successfully destroyed spectrum. But having done so, opted to show compassion and reconstruct cloudbase and its inhabitants (not in a sinister way).
    Always felt it was a brilliant way to end the show. Bad guys win, but gracefully, and we're reminded they were only bad because we (spectrum) made them so.

    • @simoncurry5336
      @simoncurry5336 Před 24 dny

      Is that where Chris Dale (also known as Chris Dalek) got the idea from when he reviewed that episode on the Gerry Anderson CZcams channel? He thought Spectrum couldn't defeat the Mysterons and the series should have ended with the destruction of Cloudbase.

    • @mistergeneration
      @mistergeneration Před 24 dny +1

      Nah, it was a poor attempt. 1) it was framed as a movie, which means the War was over in the duration of the four complied episodes, 2) the Attack on Cloudbase part of the compilation featured dream physics.. where things happened that are unexplained and out of character to how events play out in the Scarlet universe, some characters were uncharacteristically hyper or otherwise weird.. [on purpose] to indicate it was a dream and 3) the mixed media of the added scene using 80s SFX on a 60s show, which actually dated faster than the original SFX..
      I seen this version first and it was enraged! Cloudbase had been targeted before (dangerous rendezvous and the Mysterons were known not to repeat their threats.
      So many things don’t match up.. The dream version is much better, I just feel people feel cheated because they wanted the end of the war… but it wouldn’t have gone that way….Spectrum weren’t the only intelligence agency invested in fighting against the Mysterons and as in previous episodes, there would have definitely been a unilateral approach to such an attack,.. that’s what made the Scarlet world feel grounded… they re-edit for the compilation made it feel opposite, like the war was a particular vendetta that the Mysterons had against spectrum, which they didn’t.. it was against all humanity.. so it actually felt like more of a cop out than it being a dream.
      Also, you couldn’t end the war in one episode…regardless of where the battle ground was and who gained the advantage. That’s my take 🫡

    Great reaction. This episode is one of many examples on why i prefer japanese sci fi shows to western ones. Because while the united states or even the uk will create a great concept and premise for a show, they always fail to give a proper ending to it. It gets frustrating and boring after a while. Especially when the premise of a show demands a conclusion to it. Captain scarlett cant fight the mysterions forever, there has to be an endgame. Yet we get this dream ending. While some shows back then like Blake's 7 gives a conclusion to the story it was telling or several shows nowadays doing the same, i wish it could have been done 40 years ago like the japanese did in their shows. There is a show they did inspired by gerry anderson puppet shows known as X bomber or Star Fleet to uk watchers that took what thunderbirds and captain scarlett did and turn it to 11 and had an ending to unlike scarlett. If it was like trek or thunderbirds where the premise is more free open that's fine but when its very confined to a specific situation and there is no payoff it becomes a problem. Like space 1999.

    You thought original Captain Scarlet was violent, New Scarlet is even more violent than the original to point it when it went on DVD, it was rated 12. Since you have already watched *Instrument of Destruction* Captain Black gets more gruesome with his kills. He pulled a Oddjob on his victim (Mr Solo) without putting a bullet in him.
    And there was an episode that was written but they never made and it was suppose to be the final episode called *House of Dolls* where Scarlet goes on vacation with his sister and nephew. And a car accident reveals to them Scarlet's special power of recovery. With their car wrecked, they take shelter in the home of an eccentric toymaker named Alexander Woodchurch, which was intended to be modeled after Gerry Anderson himself along with resume of working with puppets as he was builder of puppets.
    To make a long story short, the Mysterons took over of the puppets, brutally unaliving Woodchurch and turn their attention on Scarlet and his family as they are trapped in Woodchurch's house with murderous marionettes and killer toys.
    The reason why this episode wasn't made is because it was too scary.
