Today, one of the most popular and reliable ways of investing and growing one's wealth is by investing in index funds. There are many popular index funds brands such as SPDR, iShares, and ProShares, but by far the most well-known and highly respected brand is Vanguard. Vanguard is often credited with creating the index fund itself, and while this is not exactly true, Vanguard was no doubt the company that popularized index funds. It wasn't a super easy path though. When John Bogle launched Vanguard's first index fund in 1975, investors couldn't care less. Most investors felt that they could just match the market themselves if they wanted and saw no reason to pay someone to track an index. However, as 401Ks and retirement plans started to become popular, companies embraced the stability and reliability of index fund investing. And by the 2000s, it became clear that most hedge funds don't even beat the market, which led to a massive influx of investors flocking to index funds. This video explains the story of Vanguard and John C Bogle, and how Vanguard became the king of index funds.

@@crz8237 You probably say that money doesn’t determine happiness
@Rude Sensei True
If you're a good person with trillions of dollars, you will stay a good person, except with allot more wealth and a higher chance to give money to charity and help others, not simply corrupt because it's there
Nice to see someone in the stock market with ethics.
Yes sir

What's the problem in that?

Some advice.
Don't use the red border around your thumbnails. It looks similar to the red 'already watched' bar. I almost skipped the video because I thought I had already seen it. Any other color is fine, just don't use red.
Ah, nice catch Trebor. I’ll be sure to avoid red borders moving forward.
@@LogicallyAnswered thanks. had the same issue
My thoughts exactly!
Tom Scott and a few others had to stop using it for the same reason
What a boss. I’d like to see you do a video on the IKEA founder. He had pretty noble principles too and set part of the company up in a way that it couldn’t be owned by anyone, including himself.
I really like this idea!
To be fair its widely known that Ingvar Kamprad was a fashist and a nazi, so yeah very noble principles. I mean no matter what he did as a business man, you should always tell that part of his story...
@@ikb7375 In the 1940s he joined a fascist group as a teenager, but he said he was led astray by his parents and definitely didn't hold any sympathies towards that stuff in his later life. But sure, it's something that could be mentioned about him.
@@LogicallyAnswered if you intend to make a video on this guy you should mention the facts on this, please just don't blindly glorify Nazis.
Carl Zeiss did the same with his company Zeiss before he died, it was divided after WW2 but they merged back together after the collapse of the USSR.
This is one of the MANY reasons I exclusively use Vanguard whenever possible.
Its just a great company!
LOL! Vanguard / Blackrock are like the cancer of the world...

John's book "the little book of common sense investing" is truly an eye opener
Thank you Mr. Bogle! You lived a life that served others! So many people are better off because of you.
Q. Do you Give at least 10 % of your Profits to Good charities?!
To a financial disaster to being the largest index fund manager, John ‘Jack’ Bogle
Will go down in history as a person who revolutionized index funds
Most fund managers underperform the averages and charge high management fees. The average investor is better off buying index funds with low management fees a little every month for decades, buy and hold.
True
There are few rare gems in the business community with ethics of solid diamonds. One such industrialist is India's Ratan Tata, please make a video on Ratan Tata.
Ethical investors are legends.
These people fully grasps the world throat but never let it dies yet encourages it to blossoms.
its due to the reason of such ethically strong people this world is still worth living
Honest and selfless man. Hard to find these days.
vanguard is great. i think it should be made clear that not only _CAN_ you get rich whilst being ethical, but you are much more likely to become wealthy by doing so.
Quite strange in the age of pure horrific capitalism and oil barons this man stayed in his path doing what he could that was good.
When you're the only one playing it ethical in an environment where everybody's playing it dirty, chances are you'll go bankrupt. Vanguard just targeted an industry early, which is why they succeeded even though they went ethical. And tbh their business isn't complicated or risky at all compared to tech companies where things change all the time and bad decisions can easily lead to bankrupcy.
I wouldn’t say more likely lol, given most rich people I meet aren’t ethical or are ethically challenged
@@DebF124 I have had a different experience in my short life. Around me, and the people I trust to do business with, integrity is rewarded
Slow and steady wins the race. And doesn't take too much to change the world.
I invested in various funds with Vanguard since 1998. I have gotten great returns with minimal commissions. I reinvest the dividends which increases the return even more. My only complaint is that the website only goes back 10 years so I don't know how much money I have made.
John Bogle is one of the few great men of finance worth the admiration and praise.
Vanguard is the best!!! I have a portfolio with them & their services are amazing!!! Staff is always helpful & knowledgeable
When you invest you're buying a day you don't have to work
I'm looking for something to venture into on a short term basis, I have about $6k sitting in my savings, what do you think I should be buying?

John is truly a hero of the common people.
The man is a leader and and American patriot who was obviously not greedy
this great man did more for the american middle class than all these dumb useless politicians ever will....Thank you legend, I will always hold the majority of my assets with Vanguard because of you. RIP
Seeing all that money made him loose interest to get rich.
It's like staring at tons of gold for years and trying to go wow over a gold ring.
Your content is underrated and highly valuable at the same time.
Like your title, agree with you. The stock market is so diverse, there is no need to take advantage of investors, workers and regulators.
The channel I always be waiting for a new video to come !
Thanks for watching Lakshmi!
Jack Bogle did so much for millions of normal people to be better off with their investments.
Wow, what a great story. John was truly a decent and honest man
Yes, Sir John is correct the Vanguard is the answer of Money because Vanguard is
ahead of the troops...
Majority of my portfolio is Vanguard ETF's. Thank you Mr Bogle!!!!
Vanguard has been extremely good to me. Love investing with them. Always nice to pop in a few times a month to watch it rise
Such an inspiring man I am deeply moved by his legacy
I would love for you to talk about the rise and kind of fall of GE, maybe even a video on Jack Welch. Just throwing it out there!
Nice Video. I have all my money at Vanguard. Jack Bogle was a visionary to be sure, but more important he, was an ethical human being. I think it is true to day that no one else in the history of finance has done more for the individual investor.
More people need to know this story.
What a legend
A revolutionary business model geared towards empowering the ordinary investor.
The other thing that really helped vangaurd was money market funds which helped Vanguard really push their growth
Now this is true ethical running of a company, not some billionaire tossing out a few bundles of cash here and there to charity
I didnt know we needed any proof for that as, obviously, one does not contradict the other. Thanks for giving it though.
Great video keep up the good work
Thanks Terence!
This was brilliant!
Never knew all of this.
But if no one owns vanguard, then who is the board, who makes the ultimate decisions?
This was honestly surprising.
Interesting!
Vanguard has served me well on my way to financial independence. One thing not mentioned is the Vanguard S&P 500 Index Fund may be slow making money but it's also one of the safest investments out there. So long as there isn't a global thermonuclear war or the markets get pumped like Japan's did, crash, and never recover, it will always bounce back from a recession. I lost half my net worth in 2008 only for it to come back by 2012 and double since then.
awesome content about an amazing man. thanks
It's not about how much they own it's about how much they control.
The biggest thing to give index funds a prop are that not long after they were first created, the USD was taken off the gold standard. So at this point, holding cash would lose value. So anything that matches the market, will be better than the loss of value of fiat currency. Markets in the long term will always grow as population grows.
All dreamers out there keep going this is temporary situation it will pass your success will come be patient never give up just keep moving forward no matter what ✊ 💪
Bro you made my day, thank you so much for being out there!
John Bogel went to my high school (Blair academy) he’s a really smart snd nice dude
Inspiring investment story
Great investor of all time
If everyone agrees that a the situation is dire. Then ethical investing is the way.
Vanguard actually has ethical etfs that only include stocks of companies that they deem are ethical
@@LogicallyAnswered I'm only interested in unethical ETFs that invest in unethical companies

Wow, what a fantastic man. It’s a shame he is gone.
i'm all in on vanguard funds
what amazing story
I believe in Jhon's philosophy and execution. This is more relatable to Indian values. I'm into equity investment due to his legacy. I would say the index fund as the concept is relatively new, give it a couple of centuries it will be the largest institution
Vanguard is who I use for all of my non 401k investing.
Ah, great choice!
Amazing ❤️
Thanks for watching man!
KEEP IT UP 👍
Pls do a vid on BlackRock/iShares too

Hard to distinguish between a ethical business and a competitive business. Are Walmart's prices low because they are trying to help people save or because that ensures everyone shops at Walmart? But even if Walmart is just trying to get as many customers as they can it still can be a good thing and for many people it is a lot wiser to shop there than paying extra somewhere else that is only pseudo superior.
Walmart ensures low prices by reselling cheap shit made in Asia and by paying its workforce poverty wages. The Walton family are not ethical people.
I hope you added what an index fund is. I am illiterate on investment terms and google's answer is not easy to understand.
Invested in vanguard funds before I heard about this
Yes 😃

Damn what an empire
Yeah, it’s massive
@@LogicallyAnswered well Blackrock surpasses them but not by much of a difference
True, but what’s even more impressive is that vanguard is ok with such a small return on all this money

Saint Jack!
I think my phone is listening to my mind, how the hell am I recommended this video when I was thinking that "there's no getting wealthy ethically ".
That's amazing. It jsut goes to show how shit usury currency actually is. it makes good people the exception, not the norm. No empowered political/social change will happen until we use currency models without any usury: no tax, fees, costs or interest. Only then will we move to trust-based collaborative economics and achieve the empowerment all people are looking for.
Happy to discuss a solution if you're interested.

How can company have no investors if they made an IPO some time ago?
If you can beat the index fund's average annual return (13%) don't invest in the index fund you're not maximizing your growth potential.
Sometimes, people don’t want the stress of trying to beat the market
You might be able to beat it this year or even in the next 10 years, but can you beat it in 20 years down the road?
Awful advice. Risk is key.

Vanguard group is one of the enormous trillion dollars company that have invent more millionnaire on a monthly basis
There's a reason he's called St Jack Bogle
usually with very old ultra rich people you can feel the corruption in their eyes, i don't get that same vibe with vanguard which is actually surprising
