SoftBank is a large investment bank based in Japan, and though most people have never heard of SoftBank, Softbank was actually the most profitable bank in the world over the past 12 months. SoftBank pulled in a whopping $56.46 billion in earnings which is the 6th highest of any company in the world. The second most profitable bank was Goldman Sachs, and they came in at just a third of SoftBank at $19.5 billion. While these profits seem impressive at first, you may not view SoftBank the same after hearing that they manipulated their way to historic profits. After the pandemic crash in 2020, SoftBank began buying billions of dollars worth of tech options which created enormous amounts of buying pressure. SoftBank was able to induce upward momentum in the market and then ride the wave up to historic figures. This video explains how SoftBank was able to use their massive cash reserves to buy themselves out of a red position by pumping the markets.

For all of you saying that SoftBank didn’t manipulate the market, according to Investopedia, the definition of market manipulation is "the act of artificially inflating or deflating the price of a security or otherwise influencing the behavior of the market for personal gain." I think making a massive purchase that literally changes the trend of the market and makes you the most profitable bank in the world definitely falls under that definition. I'm not faulting SoftBank for doing so nor am I saying that it's illegal. All big banks and hedge funds are involved in such price manipulation both to the upside and downside. And, if I was in Masayoshi's position, I would've done the same thing. But, it is still market manipulation nonetheless.
Do you really think they were buying to raise a price? Usually one tries to buy as cheap as possible.
There is no investing occurring. Investing is mirrored extraction measuring. Let's GO!!!!!!!!!!!
True
मMममMमी
Investopedia isn't US constitution, and do you even know what market manipulation is, it's telling people to buy or short or sell some particular stocks that's manipulation and it's not illegal to invest in billions if you've a billion dollars to invest law doesn't say that you can't invest so don't ever say Masayoshi Son is market manipulator, colluding, pump and dump is market manipulation,
Hedge funds colluded and shorted GameStop heavily that's illegal if proved so go and get your facts straight and for god sake read some laws not investopedia
My dad is a senior partner at KPMG and audits SoftBank. He’s met masa and been in meetings with him. He says he’s never met someone so sharp and a man who has mastered something this much. In addition, he is a great guy to be around. Massive respect.
I don't see how it's called manipulation. Softbank bought these options without hyping it with false information or anything of that sort. It's simply trading and they came out on top.
Fair enough. The reason that it could be considered manipulation is because they were single handedly able to move the markets in a big way in their favor. But as I stated in the video, if that’s all they did, it’s not illegal.
@@LogicallyAnswered having a big price impact to the market is not market manipulation lmao. It is if sun is out here shilling his bags or making tweets but he's not
Well, the definition of market manipulation is "the act of artificially inflating or deflating the price of a security or otherwise influencing the behavior of the market for personal gain." I think making a massive purchase that literally changes the trend of the market definitely falls under that definition. I'm not faulting SoftBank for doing so nor am I saying that it's illegal. All big banks and hedge funds are involved in such price manipulation both to the upside and downside. And, if I was in Masayoshi's position, I would've done the same thing. But, it is market manipulation nonetheless.
@@LogicallyAnswered That is not what manipulation is, nothing wrong with buying a lot of what you like. You might be confused about this.
I didn’t create that definition my man. It’s from investopedia.
My portfolio personally got decimated after the market corrected because of SoftBank but I'm not mad about it. I just flew too close to the sun.
It was nice growing my portfolio 300% in just a couple of months. It didn't feel so nice watching it all become a wash though...
At least I didn't dip below what I put in before.
Yeah, not losing house money is no doubt the silver lining
Can’t penalize someone for outsmarting everyone using all the valid rules. Touché
Wasn’t penalizing him haha
SoftBank did not manipulate the market, they just bought at the right time with options.
Eh fair enough. They didn’t break the law. But their single purchase was able to significantly move the markets in their favor.
@@LogicallyAnswered if you had that kinda money, would you have done it?
Yes, but it would still be market manipulation
@@LogicallyAnswered you earned a sub for honesty.
I almost ignored this video expecting it to be another story about Softbank managing to loose a sizeable percentage of Japan's GDP in a very bad cluster of investments. I did not realize that they had enough funds under management remaining to remain active. I definitely didn't consider it possible to recover and become this profitable.
I'm glad they were able to recover both financially and in terms of brand reputation. I was actually expecting that downfall to end poorly with one person being the face of investment losses of the magnitude they were at the bottom.
I'm glad those that remained loyal were rewarded so nicely, but hopefully the strategy becomes more conservative because if you keep putting Japan on Black eventually you'll land on red one too many times. I've observed them since the mid 90s. They take risk tolerance to the extremes.
Thanks for watching Nicholas!
Softbank is not a bank in any way though. They're a conglomerate with a telecoms main business. Unless you want to categorise any company with a special fund investing in start-ups a bank. Then Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Samsung, Toyota, Ford, GE, Netflix, Intel, Comcast and a host of other companies can also be classified as banks.
Do they invest a lot of money in start-ups? Yes.
Do they qualify as being a bank? No
Softbank is a giant holding company just like Berkshire Hathaway.
@@TBasianeyes Most businesses are structured as holding companies with operating subsidiaries. Alphabet, Apple, Facebook (now Meta) are all technically holding companies with productive subsidiaries...
Doesn't detract from my submission
He's played the game well and won BIG! Well done him and SoftBank.
I watch all your videos up to the end. I love your videos we always learn something new everyday
Thank you so much for your support Rodriguez!
The great Masayoshi Son, the leader who created another great leader(Jack Ma) nobody believed in Jack Ma, no Chinese or American investors, the best investment in history created by a billionaire leader and a poor leader
Yes, they manipulated the market due to their immense purchasing power due to their capital and options. It sounds like everything they did was legal though, good for them and smart move considering the we work disaster
Yep exactly
I think the whole fuss about this matter is how easy they were able to come over their mistake and make easy money just by their cheer trading volume. I guess if a person invested that much in wework, it will a major blow to its own finances and will be quite hard to get over. Moreover, it reflects also the hidden power of all hedge funds and investment funds: They can earn massive amount of money by moving the markets or moving in them. I think of course they are still more discrete than Elon Musk for example who is playing a similar game but in a different manner.
Solar City and the family members who made billions at the detriment of smaller investors who were targeted.
Big money has too much power? Yes. But that has been the case since forever. Did Softbank commit a crime? I dont think so.
Yeah, they didn't do anything illegal, and most of us would do same thing if we were in their position. But, it's still manipulation nonetheless.
@@LogicallyAnswered Agreed! But I'm leaning towards "unintentional manipulation" because the very nature of their trades is going to tip the market - often in the direction that they want. But still manipulation nonetheless and despite all our noble proclamations, we would probably do the same in a heartbeat because we have to answer to our stakeholders!
Finally a CZcamsr who speaks like human

What is that website you use when you look up the revenue of a company? 1:17
SoftBank is not a bank. It is a private company with an investment fund. It's a mobile carrier company primarily and definitely not a bank.
You are totally right. If you had enough buying power like this financial institution, one can set a certain # of orders in a certain price. If you check stock jockeys you'll notice a pattern in price actions & financial institutions involved.
Damn Masa is just damn smart. You never want to mess with him haha
Some things that I never knew about soft-bank. Thank you for the info!
Great video 👍👍
damn. They recently invested in a mobile banking platform in our country that has near-monopoly. (80% marketshare). Even Bill & Melinda Gates foundation invested in it. Some people literally own the world
What's the name?
@@shanebyron6412 Its a mobile banking platform named BKash in Bangladesh. Bill & Melinda's foundation invested in it in 2016 in the early stages and SoftBank invested this year.
Thank you for this video! It was fascinating learning about the history of SoftBank.
👆👆Knowing that my investment is in safe hands got me excited. He made that possible with his excellent trading technique, beginning this great journey I invested $12,000 capital and in a few days I got a return of $34,000 His confidence, reliability and diligence is undeniable

when Softbank started investing themselves vs solely advising they didn't become a "bank". traditional banking is a lending institution and they were not a investment bank. they were more of a venture capital and private equity firm rolled up into one.
This man is legendary
Errrm Softbank isnt a bank, its a large group mainly known for being a Telecoms provider. They arent a financial service provider like Citibank etc. Why you would call it a bank is quite strange and makes it feel like you didnt properly do research even though you hit on it that it didnt start out as a bank, it never became a bank.
Everytime unique topic 🔥🌚
Thanks Prakhar!
@@LogicallyAnswered can you make a video on how you come up with these new topics and do your research? Thanks
Despite Masa’s charisma softbank stock has done poorly
Despite large gains by some of the startups they bought , stock has underperformed
Do you think it still has a future ?
There is no venture capital fund even close to it
I will appreciate your opinion
The Sprint acquisition was HORRIBLE. He lost $$$ the entire time. The WEWORK acquisition was Worse! If that is even possible.
Love the start on the company, it's naming is the corporate idea of dress for the job you want not the job you have.
7:24 i think it is not his fault, it's retail that don't know what to do with their money. .
it would be wise if you want to rich, you should build your own boat/ark to rich,
not come to other boat party & wish you are saved by them.
Rich & loss is your own responsibility based on fundamental & your decision making. .
Whoa this is amazing 😂
I don't understand anything
Why this company is not that much famous 🤔
Jack dorsey resigned from Twitter. Great video choice brother.
Thanks Shivendra!
Not manipulation coz no shilling of stocks. They just invested on the right stock at the right time.
If Son didn't sold his position on Tesla, he might have a much higher profit.
His strategies for short term is option trading then use that money for long term investments. That dude is both trader and investor but on an enterprise level and that's what I want to become lol.

@@LogicallyAnswered Ok
@@LogicallyAnswered Thanks for the definition.
Maybe they did that due to the losses they incur on wework. But if they did that like always, they might get sued by SEC. Goodluck to them but I hope that his vision fund will succeed.
Masayoshi Son's risk tolerance is sooooo high lol. He didn't care about losses.
The SEC is investigating then right now. I don’t think they’ll do anything though. Manipulating the market using large amounts of cash is frowned upon, but not illegal.
Imagining if the 4B$ options investment would have gone wrong
the loss with options is fixed so only 4 billon loss

He is a high roller at the casino he owns.
They have invested in so many unicorns in India.
Like flipkart and Oyo and ola etc.
Must be frustrating to lead this huge company but still be referred to as just the son of Mr. Masayoshi.
nice video

They didn’t buy Vodafone. They bought the company’s unit.
It’s literally IN the heading?
You should improve the transition between topics. Don’t abruptly stop the music, let it fade out into the background while a new background music fades in.

Big government has too much power not big money.
If the government didn't have so much power the big money would have no control anymore
What the hell are they investigating in SoftBank? Totally legal
Finally a good thumbnail
Thanks man!
I will become billionare and will comment on this video i promise
I’d love to see that!
SoftBank fan here !
Thanks for watching AGI!
imagine we are him, we have a lot of money, the key is market liquidity. first i will buy stock at low price through otc market. announced it to everyone so that many entered. when the liquidity and volume increases then I can easily sell billions in just a few days. what they need is liquidity
Can anyone pls explain why softbank was unethical in the last part of the video ??
He got unlimited money to invest which majority comes from Saudi and UAE prince..
Tesla and TikTok should make them hugely rich
when softbank become a hedgefun
Finance Gurus here on CZcams manipulate the market all the time.. The ones with millions of subs, They recommend a stock, all while they buy a crap load of call options just before they "issue that recommendation".... Is this Legal though?
Ah that’s very true! I would definitely say that’s morally wrong, but legally, they can probably get away with it if they have the right disclaimers and such.
Dude must come from the future
How does 5 billion worth of options become 50 billion stock? I don't know what options are.
Options is a form of leveraged trading that allows the buyer to control much more stock
@@LogicallyAnswered so if the stock prices of softbank's bets had decreased, they would be out of business in a year? If it is that risky I'm surprised that the board agreed to go through with options trade.
@@akashkakati2860 where did you get a year from
Well, with options, if you’re the buyer, you can’t lose more than you put in. So their max possible loss was $5 billion.
When WeWork happened a lot of people talking trash on Son.
Btw, probably did the same vanguard and blackrock.
Your video is inaccurate on those earnings numbers. JPMorgan Chase, for instance, reported a net profit of 48.27 billion for instance the 12 most recent months. Which is way more than Goldman for your "second highest bank." While Apple's earnings was an impressive, but smaller 94 billion profit than your screen shows.
“Pump and Dump”
How do you all feel about this information?
umm asking fo a friend, how do we tell youtube to permanently F*** off with turning off youtube dislikes, how the hell are suppose to know if a video is useful or not or scammy?
I agree that CZcams should show the dislike counter. But what triggered you about the video that much? It seems like many people are super passionate about SoftBank. I’m not saying SoftBank broke the law or anything. They simply used their massive influence to manipulate the market to benefit themselves just like every other bank and hedge fund. If I was in their position, I would’ve done the same thing. But it’s still manipulation nonetheless.
@@LogicallyAnswered nothing F*cking luv your vids, speaking in general
@@LogicallyAnswered and, just for that I’m gonna go out of my way to like this video

Softbank is not a bank despite the name
This is complicated
Hahaha, yes it is!
wikipedia says he was born on 1957
Oops, my bad. Accidentally said 67.
Hardbank🥵
softbank did nothing bad... if they didn't buy 2 thing could have happen,... the stock keep going down because no buyer so all other stock holder lose... or someone else buy the option and make the money...
I didn’t say SoftBank broke the law. Also, stocks continuing to go down wouldn’t have been a bad thing. It would’ve been natural.
Guy says he understands autonomous transport invests in Uber instead of Tesla 🤦♀️🤦♂️
Anyone else watching 3:45 on repeat? I wonder if they did that on purpose.
Punished? What for, not being American?
You're right, they didn't break the law after all.
well, if you become masayoshi son, and you own a big liabilities like wework and having ton of vision fund investor choking your neck
, how do you recover in just 1 year in the middle of Pandemic?
Most of us in his position are better off shooting ourself on the head rather than keep alive and miserable.
if SEC agree that he didn't manipulate anything, then he is clean.
Just because you're big enough to create an impact, doesn't mean your whole existence is a illegal or what you do is manipulation.
i don't know why you irrationally want someone to be a criminal that bad
it's not everyday you see a brilliant move from a master of business, he just switch his position from the worst and going to the top again.
it's easy to judge someone not knowing what he going through all this time
The fact that the video starts with a mistake Is not great. Softbank Is not a bank...
Son is my hero
Provocative title about market manipulation - spends 10 minutes on history of softbank and 10 seconds on describing buying options as "market manipulation". What a scam.

Softbank isn’t a bank
Would investment bank be the right term?
Japanese girl here. There seems to be a big misunderstanding about the company’s name. SoftBank started out as a software provider, they aimed to have the largest selection of software to choose from thus the name soft( short for software)+ bank. Now it’s commonly known in Japan as one of the largest telecom providers , so it’s main industry is telecommunication. Any investment Sotfbank is doing came much later on and was never part of the company’s description.
how's it manipulation lol 🤣
