Listing Every Active Hall Of Famer-Are Their Cards A Good Buy?

- The hall of fame is important for every sport and card collecting, but in baseball cards it is even more important! In this part 1 of 2 video the Spitballin team discuss every active player we believe will make the hall of fame and break down whose cards are undervalued and over valued
When y’all were talking about Judge and his cards at high prices it really resonated when you asked “is he a buy?”. I think that would be a really great idea for a video that I think people such as myself might enjoy. Discussing some of the top players and whether their corresponding cards and their prices are a buy/sell/hold. I know that’s super investment focused but it would be beneficial and interesting for us to hear. Just an idea! Absolutely phenomenal show as always!
@@bradleywhite5406 that’s a good idea!
Chris here A - I just don’t want anybody yelling at me if I recommend a buy and the player gets hurt immediately (again).
But that’s the kind of video I’d want to watch as well.

Chris would be proud of me. I picked up a PSA 9 2011 Topps Chrome Freeman Refractor auto at The National. Thought it was a great deal, especially when compared with the the current prices of Topps Chrome rookie autos.
Jeff here: nice pickup! 💪🏼
I have a shit ton of Mike Mussina cards I picked up as a kid that didn't move up in value like my dad told me they would when he made the Hall of Fame. That does not appear to be stopping me from growing my collection.
@@stephenbronson Chris here - it can be nice to pc a guy who was an amazing player, has a lot of great rare cards, AND somehow those cards seems cheaper or undervalued.
Mussina was great. Seems nuts he never won a cy young.
And man, was he cursed?
Yankee won the WS the year before he signed and the year after he retired?!
Enjoyable video! No major arguments from me. I think Goldschmidt is on the bubble, but probably gets in on a later ballot. As a Reds fan I'm looking forward to more Votto discussion. 7 time OBP leader, 2 time OPS leader, 1 time MVP with a few other top-10's and ~ 65 WAR. A lot more black ink in his stats than Goldschmidt, and I'm not sure Goldschmidt reaches his WAR. Makes for a good debate.
Votto is one my favorite players (growing up in his neighborhood)
But he is such borderliner HOF 🙏
@@davelachey8118 Chris here - I think votto gets in no later than second ballot.

If Kershaw, Verlander and Scherzer retired today they are all first ballot, no doubt HOFs.
If Trout, Harper, Ohtani, Judge or Betts retired today there would be lots of questions and debate about whether or not they had a HOF career but I think eventually they'd all get in.
If Goldschmidt, Freeman or Machado retired today I'd say they were great players but not HOFs.
Anyways I collect all of their cards right now for the hobby. I don't have much prior to 2012 tho bc I stupidly sold my original collection and restarted a few yrs later. I miss those cards. 😢

@@billysikes1374 Ya true Kershaws not getting to 250 wins and his post season performance isn't great but he did win 3 Cy Young awards and an MVP. Plus he has several ERA and strikeout titles and was one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball for a decade. His career WAR is close to 80 too.
The HOF voters will consider his win total as being low I'm sure and they'll question his post season performance.
300 wins is certainly HOF worthy but not all HOF pitchers have 300 wins. Koufax 160, Mussina 270, Pedro 219, Jim Palmer 268... anyways there's quite a few.
Sabathia does have HOF cred: 3000 Ks, 250 wins, Cy Young award, mutiple AS selections, 62 WAR, pitched for 19 yrs. Not a lock but I think he gets in eventually.

When Goldy won MVP in 2022 that was the final factor that bumped his card prices. I bought a few higher end Goldy rookies mid season 2022 and could have easily sold them for a very nice profit after he officially won the award
Cole and Sale would be interesting. With Scherzer and Verlander pushing their age as far as they can, both Cole and Sale have a great chance at 3000 K’s if they can stay healthy and use the same approach (the pitch until you die approach for lack of a better term.)

If there is belief that Wagner is in next year, than you have to take look at Craig Kimbrel. Already 4th in All Time Saves approaching Lee Smith for 3rd All Time. Just a personal opinion.

@@jiminfla5951 Chris here - Hall of very good. One of the best Pirates, definitely in the Pirates Hall of Fame.
His stats aren't far off from your boy Goldy....
@@LJB42_Collections whoa!!! Freeman is my boy. Goldy is Scott’s boy!
The reason Goldy and Mccutchen are close in counting stats is due to Mccutchen debuting earlier and playing a higher number of games.
Mccutchen has 2,095 games played compared to Goldschmidts 1,873. With those extra games Mccutchen is still behind Goldy in every counting stat aside from hits (due to playing more games) and stolen bases. (219 vs 164).
Mccutchen has been an average to below average defnder for his career aside from one early gold glove while goldy has 4 gold gloves and was elite defensively.
Gold has a .894 ops 139 ops+ while Mccutchen has an ops of .830 with a 127 ops+.
With all that beingsaid, Goldy has been the better player with 9 mvp vote seasons vs Mccutchens 4.
You could even say “Mccutchens numbers are close to Freeman’s” and while it is true, people would still view Freeman as the better player.
With that all being said, I would like Mccutchen in the hall of fame. I just don’t think he will quite get there. A player needs to have either elite rate stats, elite advanced analytics, or elite counting stats and Cutch is good at all those things but note quite elite in any.
That’s my two cents anyway! Thanks for watching.
Loved him during his time with the Brew Crew, but unless he manages to put together a couple more solid seasons, I don’t think he’ll make the HoF. Great peak but way too short.
A lot of great names, I think my next goal is selling some stuff to save up for a nice Soto rookie. I really think he needs to stay with the Yankees for his cards to have the most value though, otherwise he will be going to his 4th team in 4-5 years. Love the content guys!
Chris here - I definitely feel the same way. 10+ years in pinstripes would be huge for his cards.
Yes! Absolutely agree. Thanks for watching!
This was fun! Acuna is such a risk here. It's crazy that his red is still selling north of 50k imo. I pretty much agree with your 'tiers' on these guys. To me Lindor isn't in the convo (yet) with the Machado/Arenado/Altuve/JoRam tier. He's one of those guys that gets too much love from WAR. I like to look at OBPS as much if not more than WAR. Maybe I'm just an old man now. :p I personally take peak over counting stats, so someone like Judge I feel needs more respect for his dominance.(Implied however that your peak is over at least 5-6 years). Questions 1) Does Chris have a crush on Bryce Harper? 2) Since Harper's WAR is lagging, maybe we move him to SS? 😁 Lastly, for the record, I feel like Chris wouldn't mind smelling a Freeman fart.

Next HOF starting pitcher after gerrit cole. i think gerrit cole will be last of the 5 currennt hof pitchers playing. last of there kind. give me 1 name other then strider or skeens Go!!
Cole 👍 Verlander 👍 Kershaw👍 scherzer 👍
@@Chris-ip9qg Greinke?
@@timsfgiantsmem9382 definitely 👍 but is he still active?
@@Chris-ip9qg Not Sure. Prolly not.. But he's part of the 5 I was thinking of.. I be watching this MLB Redzone Channel. Watch all the Action. It's Great!! Sometimes 6 games on at once
After Cole, and with a looming power vacuum once the current big Active 4 retire over the next 2-3 years (Max, Justin, Clayton and Zach), the next tier down has potential AND questions.
Chris Sale is the craziest coin flip at both ends of the extremes. He could get 3,000Ks and I wouldn’t be shocked, or he could be done in 2 seasons and I also wouldn’t be shocked.
I’ve been on the Aaron Nola train for a few years. His career accumulation is on track, but he needs some more Cy Young votes possibly.
And here’s the roughest of roughies - Robbie Ray. Like Nola, needs more cumulative Cy Young votes, but if he can stay fit, he’s barely put anything into his arm (just over 1200IP at age 32), so although he needs a good 5 year span to just stay in the conversation, he could have a fresher arm in his later 30s than others in contention. But if he faded out in the next 2-3 years, it wouldn’t shock me either.
Don’t discount Dombrowski swooping in and reuniting the Harper/Turner/Soto troika in Philly.
@@FreddyFind Chris here - you think phillles can afford another huge contract?
I hope not
@@SpitballinCards Being a Dodger fan I hope not too... but Realmuto and Schwarbino contracts ($43 million) come off the books at the end of next season and Castellanos ($20 million) the following season.

@@jeffreiling5348 loooooooong way to go.
One season doesn’t get you in. As an Acuna fan, I know this too well.
@@SpitballinCards Fair enough
60 home run season equals automatic Hall of Fame induction.
@@jeffreiling5348 tell that to Roger Maris
@@SpitballinCards Wow didn’t realize he isn’t in. Well he should be.
Click bait thumbnail? Questioning Trout HoF status...give me a break
Bryce Harper sucks and has been overrated ever since he came to the majors…. Seemed like he was so hyped up when he came up that everyone just focuses on his few great seasons and are willing to forget his bad ones.
identify which of his seasons were bad? His worst season was 2014 .768 OPS. He's had nine seasons with .854 OPS or better. .854 puts you in about the top 20 hitters every year..
Since 2015, he's only had one season below .877.
@@DarinsCards his first three seasons weren’t that great. He won ROY because of his hype coming in and because the NL Roy race was weak. He had a great MVP year. Followed that up with 3 decent years out of 5. Those 3 weren’t GREAT seasons. Another good-great MVP year along with two “mid” years. He had 145+ hits in THREE of his first TWELVE years. He’s having a good-great year again this year but COME ON. You can’t tell me he hasn’t had an underwhelming career with all the hype he got when he first enter the MLB?! Injuries or not, it all factors into how his career ends.
Harper is not flashy but the home run power is high so he might slowly reach 500+ home runs
@@kly1994 Chris here - I’ll give you this, he has been one of the most inconsistent players over the last decade, mixing great mvp seasons with some meh seasons as well.
He seems like he’s going to age well and watching him in the playoffs you can see how great he can be.
I think he’s a player who will be remembered and collected heavily after his retirement.
@@SpitballinCards I’m not saying he’s not going to be HOF or doesn’t deserve any recognition. I’m just saying for some reason or another, he’s one of the few where he’s been “forgiven” or people act like he’s been .290+, 30+ hrs, and 145+ hits every single year. He hasn’t even been that for 25% of his career. To each their own but to me he’s a star, not a superstar.
