- In today's episode of Watch and Learn, we will explore the SKX007, the iconic Seiko diver. This watch is produced in two variants; the "K" version and the "J" version. We will discuss and show you the differences of these two watches, which appear to be identical from 2 feet away. We will do the same for the SKX009 (same watch, but with a Pepsi bezel).

i work for a japenese company and oh boy, their dedication to the company is something to be admired.
Hi Marc!! In 2005 I bought my first Seiko skx007K and in February of this year I bought a Seiko009J and I am so happy I did it !! I do not get tired of looking at those watches!!!
While you are totally right I still bought an SKX007J. The Made In Japan on the dial's bottom is so iconic in my modest opinion. Thank you for such an informative video on the World's most iconic piece.
Thanks Marc. I prefer whichever model has a bezel that lines up perfectly.
That's a good attitude, but I don't think it matters as both exhibit issues.
I purchased the 009 "K" version from Long Island Watch about a month ago. It keeps excellent time running + 2-3 seconds a day. So I wouldn't be too concerned about not getting the "J" version.
As a side note, Marc has an excellent reputation on numerous watch forums, as he stands behind what he sells.
Thanks so much!
It was a pleasure to see this video again , I bought my 007J as well as the beautiful jubilee bracelet from you around 5yrs ago (I’m wearing it today!) , this is the watch that sent me down the rabbit hole of watch collecting and now it sits proudly among other Seikos , Omegas , GShocks , Marathons , etc. and I’m still as fond of it as the day I received it , I will never part with it as it is a starting milestone in my beloved watch collection ! I really appreciate the knowledge and thoughts you put out there ! Thanx Marc !!
Mark, wanted to put a general statement out there. You’re such a great guy and I really enjoy and look forward to your videos. Your love for watches really shows. Cheers!
Thanks Mark, nothing that I wasn’t really aware of but you put it so clearly and succinctly! Sold a 007k1 a few years ago, regretted it ever since and have just bought a replacement. Probably more excited about getting a watch than I’ve been for a few years now.
Thanks for explaining what the numbers on the bottom were. Now I know how to read the manufacturing date.
Great video. I never knew the real difference. I always assumed the J model had a better movement. Live and learn, thanks.
Buying this soon from you guys! Got my first seiko (vintage 6309-7040) and sent it out to have modded with a satin black cerakote finish, and found a nato strap i like and threw it on. Now I've gotten the automatic seiko bug. All this thing needs is a nicer strap and bam!
Marc just ordered my Seiko PADI 007 from your company today. Thanks for your video's.
I just bought my 007k2 from your store on friday, i think the other guy there needs to watch this videos. He told me all seikos are from japan
Well I guess there is - some - truth to that.
I came here for the seiko but commented because of the Williams syndrome shirt. I don not have a family member with WS, just a researcher who studies this and other similar disorders. Thank you for raising awareness.
No matter where it's made and assembled, it all comes down to quality control. Great video.
That is very true.
I like the J model over the K model. Years ago, before I knew the difference, I bought Seiko watches exclusively because I believed they were manufactured in Japan. Even though their is little discernible difference, we know that K models are not manufactured or assembled in Japan, whatsoever. If I had wanted a Malaysian or Hong Kong manufactured watch, that would have been another story. I also like Orient watches a lot too, and have for years. The Japan stamp on Orient watches is a plus for me, and others too...
Great video! I've got both the 009 and 007 J models and never knew about the date being on the serial numbers
Keep up the good work! always honest and objective reviews ... well done!
Thanks Bert!
very interesting thank you for taking the time to explain and try and share your knowledge and experience, it is very much appreciated by me and hopefully many others.👍
Thanks!
I have the skx oo7k i got the watch around 3 years ago and I love it !
My Seiko Dive watch, exactly like the red/blue bezel came with a stainless steel link band. One of the best watches I have.
Thanks for this video I was looking at these watches a couple weeks ago and was driving myself nuts wondering what is different I thought maybe the k had only 17 jewels and thus the lower price but now I know the truth.
Good video Mark, thanks for the comparison!
Thanks for watching!
I have a 007J I bought from Yorkshire Watches in the U.K. The quality of the case polishing for a watch of this price is fantastic.
Nice grab!
Nice addition to the video series, Mark.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this video.. Definitely a HOT topic with the SKX. I personally have a 007K and a 009J.. and love them both. Exactly the same watch besides the few things you mentioned
Thanks for validating!
Excellent comparison, thank you.
Very well stated and professionally done!
Love all your videos, Marc! Very informative. Thanks so much and keep 'em coming!
Will do, thank you.
bought the skx007k yesterday, looking forward to it
Thank you for your business.
You have to admit , Seiko designed two of the most spot on watches , with style and colour , simple but desirable .
I wonder if watch collectors in Japan go nuts over the K version
LOL, I wonder!
Probably .
FightinFlounder I would LOL. But I got the skx013 which doesn’t even have a j version thanks to my tiny wrists
asdfkie can i ask you, what size of your wrist?
People in Japan like the French and Spanish daydate^^ - its' exotic for us!
WOW, all i knew was i wanted a SKX007J,as was my previous Seiko,i've worn the Seiko diver's watch for decades, not sure what has changed over the years, awesome information video, but i still don't have a watch yet
all of your videos are great. i was reluctant to subscribe as I thought you were just trying to pedal watches....however you can tell you are a real watch enthusiast who happens to sell watches. thanks for another great video.
Thanks for the sub.
Your the man!! You do the best vids. I love my skx orange boy. Japan made!! Lol. Second watch i bought from you and everything is great. You have a customer for life !!! Take care Marc!!
Another great video Mark.
Oh sorry; just saw your response to others about the two watch thing. Cool. Anyway, thanks again for dropping some knowledge on us!
Thank you!
Very informative. Great job.
Great video! Very informative!
Thanks for the video. Informative as always. Could not help but notice your shirt logo, "Williams Syndrome." My nephew, who is now 20, has Williams Syndrome. Not well known disorder.
Not well known at all, trying to raise awareness however I can, for my nephew.
Rich West ?".8. ,
Wow, I learned a lot! Thanks you!!
love this channel, so informative.
Thanks for watching.
As TGV have mentioned in his comparison video, the J version have a slightly darker/ navy blue bezel while the K version have more of a royal blue/ lighter shade of blue. I was able to easily distinguish the two even with your thumb covering those "more clear" giveaway signs. :)
I could distinguish the difference as well before mark moved his thumb. The metal on the K version is slightly more shiney.
I have the SKX007K. I recently bought the SKX009J. In my opinion, the J version is not worth the price difference because as I compared the watches side by side, I noticed that both watches have imperfections (chapter ring is not perfectly lined up with the bezel and hour indices, lume on the hour indices are not painted perfectly centered, etc.). HOWEVER, my J is more 'imperfect'. The chapter ring misalignment is very obvious, the lume on some of the hour markers are really off-center and it seems that the dial in the J is not as dark as the K model. Don't get me wrong, I love both watches and still wear them both. I just came to the conclusion that the manufacturing process is very similar between the K and J models. In my case, I just got the better made K model than the J model. But if you really want the 'Made in Japan' print. Go get the J.
always enjoyable mate, always.
Thanks for watching.
For the price, this is a really good nice looking time piece. For some reason I really like the rubber bracelet rather than the metal.
you do a great job on the videos. thank you
Thank you.
Very informative video. What about a 007P9? As I understand it, it’s Malaysian made however not sure what the “9” designation stands for. Any ideas?
Another Great video. Seems like every forum has a raging debate about this very thing. I've seen it said, that none of these are made completely in Japan. Like you said, what does it matter, it's a Seiko, so it's got to meet their criteria no matter where it's assembled. Add to the fact that we are talking for the most part a 200.00 time piece.. Thanks again Mark... Great Review....
Thank you.
I've had two "J" Seikos-- an SKX and an SNZG15 (military style). The rotor movement sounded less "scratchy" than one of my Ks, but of the four SKXs I've owned, only the J had a crooked chapter ring. If you're going to do a dial mod, just get a K.
Excellent video, great little tutorial.
I've always tended to go for the 'J ' thinking that it was superior.
OK, so it's nice to have one made in the country of origin, but no longer a deal breaker in my eyes any longer.
Keep up your ever great videos,
Jas.
Definitely a deal breaker, insist on a (J) version and the watch will increase in value.
Great shirt marc! You never fail to score points in how amazing I think you are!
Thanks so much Vanessa!
Hi there, great video. I'm just getting into watches and have just ordered myself a SKX007j as I was specifically going after a Japanese one. From my research I believe they are no longer in production so I was really glad to see the place I had ordered it from only had 2 in stock. My question is, the day wheel comes in English and Arabic, do all the j watches have this configuration? Ideally to keep it Japanese I would prefer it to be in English and Japanese, I'm finding it hard to find a concrete answer, I read somewhere the J models all have English/Arabic combinations only but am not sure if it's true and if it is, is it possible to swap the part out?
my SKX K2 serial # begins 71. so 2017 January? not a letter, a 1. NEVER MIND, you answered my ? when you talked about the 009 version. great video. i love my SKX. it really is my fav watch to wear.
you got it!
Thank you for the video. Great pieces for the money!
Thank you!
12:40 finally someone who understands the main point of statistics.
Mark is a smart businessman, no doubt.
Another informative video. I'd heard that the only difference other than the lettering, is that the supervisors of the ones with made in Japan on them were Japanese and they indeed could be made in different countries. I have an SKX 007K1 and all the indices and bezel line up, it's beautifully made and I like the less fussy dial. I have a SNZ15J1 and although also beautifully made, I wouldn't say it was any better than my SKX007K1.
I feel the same way; I believe the are all made more or less the same.
Intresting, I could immediately spot the SKX009J every time because the red seems to go deeper on the J's, and the K's seems to go brighter. One of the reasons I bought a J. But holding them side by side the colors looked almost exactly the same and I really couldn't see much of a difference.
great as always, keep it up
Thanks for watching.
I got myself my very first Seiko today. This shall be my first somewhat expensive timepiece. It took me awhile to settle for the J. I hope I made the right purchase. Thank you for the informative video :)
Great, thank you!
Let me ask you a question I like the one without the jewels and the one with the jewels is there a huge difference if it didn't have the jewels would it still be pretty nice
great video, made help choosing. thanks.
Thanks.
Informative video 👍🏻
You are a Seiko king. I love your videos!!!!
@13:00 Since they were apparently set the same, which one was closer to the real time?
Great video Marc! I order one today :)
Thank you.
Great info. Thank you. So do Seiko charge their dealers the same for J and K and then the channel tweak the price based on the delta the consumer is willing to pay for J?
I appreciate the shirt my sister has williams syndrome. Great information on the Seiko too.
Very good and interesting thank you.
Thank you very much that was very useful for me
Glad you found it useful.
very helpful thanks
Excellent video
Great video, I always love learning all the little factory details that you take the time to Explain. My question to you, as traveling road warrior for work, have you ever considered doing a video dedicated to traveling with our watches, maybe how many should I take, how do I care for them on the road, what travel cases do you recommend etc.
Thanks, Steve
I would like to ask a question. Is the J model still coming out with new ones. Skx009J
Not wanting to sound like Mr Smart Arse… but my understanding is that these are made in the same factory in the same country - outside of Japan, though with Japanese management and Japan-trained staff. The suffix letter denotes the target market region - which has different laws and definitions of what constitutes 'country of origin'. It is part of the reason for the secondary language on the date wheel. It also makes no business sense to have 2 x separate production lines for a modest increase in profit, on what is essentially an entry-level basic watch. Only a higher-priced JDM is likely to be made in Japan, or a Grand Seiko. However a fascinating and helpful guide, as ever. Just bought one of your excellent Islander watches!!!!
Yep you got a point. Nowadays the term 'made in X country' most of the time indicates the country where the finally assembly takes place.
Good video, I thought my 007K version was inferior until now
Thanks for this video. Do you think they are too big for a 6.75 inch wrist? Or would they be OK? Thanks
what about the bezel rotation and the crown movement, it's screwing and response? Are they the same?
I picked up a 007 J for 170gbp. The K was 150gbp. I personally enjoy the manufacturing and quality control of Japanese made products. Over a few years the peace of mind is worth the extra 20gbp.
Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks , now i know clearly about J & K model after watching your video. I prefer to buy J Japan made.
Thank you, someone with common sense at last.
Nice comparison Mark. I've seen another J Vs K comparison somewhere before where differences were pointed out (I can't remember where) the differences as I remember related to the colour of the dial and the transition between the polished and brushed edges. However I'm sure there was no comparison regarding when they were made like you did, so that may invalidate the other comparison I saw. I've bookmarked your video as I get asked this same question when people ask me to mod a SKX for them. Cheers.
It was TGV's channel I believe. In my eyes, I didn't see a difference in the blues.
Will the rubber bands on these fit the Seiko 5 auto dive watches ? Maybe I could go that route.
From my experience you should worry more about where you order the watch from then if its a k or j. I got my first one from amazon and there was a spek of paint on the inside of the hardlex so I sent it back and ordered it from long island watch and it had no defects.
Hi,
When i purchased my SEIKO SKX009K2 version from Japan at 2001, they were marketing in 2 types: First model with the silikon rubber bracelet, written "21 jewels" on the dial and second with the jubilee stainless bracelet, nothing (21 jewels) on the dial. First model was naming SKX007(or 9)K1(similar J model like you said), second SKX009K2. My watch serial number is 411984 and i dont still understand when or where it was produced!?
Thank you.🙂👍🏻
I need help. I have an skx case that puts the crown exactly at 4:00. But my NH36 movement had the stem at 18 minutes. So when I install the movement. My face is off by 2 minutes. What is wrong. My movement ? Or my case ? I do t know what I did wrong.
Hi Mark the knowledge volt thanks you ,l always watch the watches you show ⌚⌚⌚⌚on target again.🎯
Thank you!
I’ve owned both 007’s ... j’s last much longer and aged better. The k’s quality and finish does not hold up as long. I had one of my j for 16 yrs until i lost it while surfing. Got a new one and it’s been 7 seven yrs. then it just got stolen last week. My 2 k’s are both out of commission, one just died, the other’s bezel just faded after 3 years. So I decided to get a new j, which just came in today.
Being a die hard 007 user, trust me 007J is the true 007!
I've heard of this also on the web. Not sure how true it is. Recently bought from Marc at Long Island Watch a Seiko skx009j and have been very happy. Everything aligned up perfectly.
Had the crystal changed to Sapphire, Blue Bezel with Lume, and Blue Chapter ring.
Strapped on a Hexad bracelet to make it more beefier on my 7" wrist!
I really don't think I would have bought one if I didn't see Marc's videos. That's what made me pull the trigger!! Highly recommend him.
I have just bought a skx13 love it . But what's the difference with the skx7 and skx9 ?
Just bought one where the “Divers 200m” is color white, and no “21 jewels” underneath it. It’s the same size as the skx007. Any info on that?
Seiko Diver are great, esp the "old school/Japan made"....more on fashion/dress watch .got a couple..they are still ticking...got the capt. willard/turtle watch ... just had serviced...
very interesting video Sir.
Thanks!
Thanks.
My 007J has Roman numerals in Black as the secondary language. Monday is I, Tuesday is II, Wednesday is III, Thursday is IV, Friday is V, Saturday is a blue VI and Sunday is a Red bar.
Great video, lots of information directly to the point 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Quality is exactly the same, just that J versions are ASSEMBLED in Japan. Having 21 Jewels and Made in Japan is just for the purists amongst us.
At the end of the day, whether you have a J or a K, you have a great Seiko watch. Just enjoy wearing them. Any of this Made in Japan is purely for marketing purposes
Quality control is very poor on Seiko entry level watches like skx. The differences spotted in this video could easily happen between two made in Japan versions of the skx.
I would rather say : pour quality control is the same for both J and K versions.
Motor City Cobra lol
@@Ilestun I agree, but something has to give. For a couple hundred dollars, you get an ISO certified 200m dive watch, with a unidirectional bezel, fantastic lume, and a very tough in-house automatic movement. I don't know what else someone could ask for for their money. I've had my SKX for 17 years, and I'm just now getting ready to send it in for its very FIRST service! And not because anything is wrong with the watch, but because I don't trust the seals anymore, and I'm sure the watch is no longer water resistant.
Also the bezel barely turns anymore. I don't know if its rust in there or just dirt. But I've used the watch in the ocean hundreds of times, and ocean water can rust anything. Either way I expect that after the service I'll get another 17 years out of it.
Thank you for the informative video! I know you say it isn't advertised on the website, but is it possible to request a particular 2nd language when ordering an SKX (or at least specify a preference)?
No, because our stock varies all the time.
The blue on the J model's bezel is slightly deeper. That seems to be an immediate difference other obvious markers aside.
I have a Seiko SKA389. What capacitor do I need to buy for this? It dies quickly.....Or do you do watch repair? BTW, love watching your videos.
Tried to look you guys up on line. Do you have any of the k’s for sale?
