    I disagree with this type of video. Obviously, you're trying to sell watches, but this is not consumer-friendly. As the business reviewing your own products you lose all credibility and objectivity. You should allow the watches to stand for themselves and let 3rd parties review Island watches.

      There are a lot of third parties who review the Islander. All are mostly positive. I upgraded my Orient Mako II which is basically an SKX style. With the ceramic lumbed bezel insert and sapphire crystal and coin edge bezel. All from Long island watch. They are all designed for the SKX and fit the Orient perfect.

    SKX keeps selling because of the name. The islander has more value, but not the history or name of the SKX. It's why Mercedes can sell entry level plastic shit boxes for a premium price. The name.

    Marc telling us he doesn’t get why we still buy the seiko and I bought one a week after his first islander release. I’ll say because the watch I wanted for a long time was the skx007j and I knew that buying a “homage” or equivalent watch was not going to make me happy. I have now modded it the way i wanted and I’m extremely happy with it. I could have paid less for more with his islander but I would’ve never be as satisfied as I actually am with my purchase. Buy the watch you really want! If an islander is your thing then go for it. If seiko is the one for you earn those extra $ and get the watch you really desire.

      If only everyone could apply this comment to the watches they purchase and collect in general! I think sooo many individuals buy watches to please others or to buy what people say they should buy. Don’t buy an skx or ANY watch because it’s what you’re “supposed” to buy. Buy what you love! Break the norm and have fun! I do think the island watch line is so unique even if they are spin offs because they are so unique and totally spec’d out and tailored to the enthusiast. Props to you Marc and I may have to get one after hesitating for a while. Spot on brother!

      Tal Ron I agree. One of the main cons for me is the logo, maybe it’s being a bit picky but it does matter to me what the dial says. Also the applied markers are not as rounded as the original skx which is one of my preferred characteristics of the original watch. Just get what you truly want and you’ll not be disappointed!

      Strangely for some it is all about the specs and nothing else. And it seems like for some the cheaper the watch the more obsessed they get about telling you how you got ripped off for paying $50-100 more than you should have for a $200 watch because there's some no name Chinese spec monster they say you should have bought off of AliExpress even though it looks nothing like the watch you bought. 🤔😆

    • @cy4624
      @cy4624 Před 3 lety

      @@Strideo1 people forget the cost of doing business. Seiko spent millions upon millions to design, develop in-house movement, and advertise the watches to make them popular in the first place or these micro/homages wouldn't exist in the first place. They also have to be sold through distributors/retailers which will instantly cause micros/homages to double in price. Finally, even if the homages are made with better spec and parts, in the history of watches, none of them will be considered an icon and have collectible value. You can buy a steinhart homage that have better build/parts vs original Rolex milsub for tiny fraction but would the Steinhart down the road be more collectible and increase in value vs Rolex...I think we all know the answer

    I’m a huge Seiko fan. But, I’ve been very frustrated over how large their divers generally are, particularly in terms of thickness. With a 6.5” wrist, not much over 12mm of thickness wears comfortably on my wrist. It would be GREAT to have more slimmer dive watch options. Perhaps you could accommodate that in a future Islander release. Just a thought.

    Thanks for the honest comparison, Mark. I bought my SKX from you over a year ago, with a 12-hour sapphire bezel. I have bad eyesight, so I wanted the bright lume. This is the best watch I have for visibility day and night. You gave me the best price, and I really enjoy the watch. I live in Canada, and because of 8 months of wet winter, I wanted a dive watch. I'm outside a lot, and did not want to have to worry, period. I would consider buying an Islander in the future, with a blue or green dial and bezel. My only dislike of both the Islander and the Seiko watches is the minute and hour hands. I just don't like the Seiko styling. I would get more squared-off, bigger hands. I understand you offer customization on the Islander, so that's what I would be thinking about if I were to buy one in the future. At this point, I'm saving money for my first luxury watch. Either Omega or Grand Seiko.

I could have done a "your watch your way", but an SKX tricked out the way I wanted was nearly $600 ( and that was before the prices shot up ). The Islander got me what I wanted for a fair price. I ended going with the ISL-09 which was fun, just because I had never seen that shade of blue on a watch before. Don't judge me, I might have a thing for blue dive watches.

    My dad got to wanting an auto, as he doesn’t currently own one and the Islander is the first one I recommended. I’m not an expert but I probably know more about watches than anybody else my dad knows so I was the one he came to when he wanted an opinion on a good auto. You get so much for the money and he ordered one like you’re wearing (the Yacht Master look alike) I don’t think his had a red seconds hand though. I’m now wanting one of your hi-beat dress watches. Thanks for the great content Marc!

    Would have to concur with your suspicion. I bought my skx009 because it was being discontinued and I wanted a piece of 'history'. Was actually my first real 'dive' watch even though I learned to dive at 16. I've since also bought my first two islanders(on the way as we speak) and will certainly get a few more. Trying to hold off buying another before those get here.

    Yes, your watch is better. Thanks for the Seiko certification explanation. And I realized on the lume segment that what I want is a longer, not brighter, lume. I would gladly settle for 30 percent less luminosity after charging if I could maintain that 70% for 100 percent more time. Did any of that make sense? Because when I go to sleep, I know what time it is. Don't need superlume when I go to bed. I want the lume five hours later when I open one eye and look at my watch. Sell me that, with a full dome. Also, your bezel aligns perfectly. The SKX's does not. Nice.

    Nice breakdown of the differences between the two watches Marc. At this point the only reason I see to buy the Seiko is the name and history behind it but the prices just don't make sense to me.

    Marc, the SKXs don't stand a chance against your great designs!
    You Rock! Your designs Rock! I have 10 watches in my "Favorites" in your website, 7 of which are Islanders! Your designs Rock my friend!! (Did I say that already?)
    Furthermore, in a few days, I'm acquiring your ISL-18. Then, as money permits, ISL-02, ISL-54, ISL-67, ISL-32 and finally, ISL-41 (a great mix of dress, every day and dive watches).
    Thanks again for sharing this comparison ... and Yes! I don't understand why people don't jump on your Islanders! :-)

    I wanted a SKX type (quartz) again as I had one back in 1985 for 18yrs. Hard to find parts like gaskets,seiko rubber bands,etc. back then. Amazing how far it's all come and Marc has taken it to a new level. Writing history I say. So I bought a ISL 44 as it is the same but better watch for me as Marc showed us.

    For what 95% of diver watch buyers will use their watch for, the Islander is better for the price. Having said that have purchased a Seiko diver for that diver certification and the Seiko diver heritage. Cool to have. I also plan to purchase an Islander watch. Best of both worlds.

    You might have won over another buyer.... maybe. One of the coolest developments during the time I have been a LIW customer, is the advent of customizing watches. We all have our own needs and wants when it comes to watches. For instance, I would be very interested in purchasing a 43mm version with a DD sapphire on a J-style bracelet with a Pepsi bezel insert and a white dial.... or perhaps that awesome wave dial, when it becomes available. I need to look into that further. Will your customers have the opportunity to make these sorts of choices?
    Keep up the great content!

  • @PhantomObserver
    @PhantomObserver Před 4 lety +1

    The ISL-013 I ordered from LIW actually arrived last week. So far it’s making a good impression. The movement accuracy is a bit unsteady, but it’s in line with other Seiko divers I have like the mini-Turtle and the 5KX. The black coating looks good. The nylon strap length does take some getting used to (the seam where it forms the spring bar loop is a bit stiff) but I think it’ll get more comfortable with time on wrist.
    About the only negative I can find (and it’s not really Mark’s fault) is that there was a $70CDN customs surcharge I had to pay in order to collect the watch from the post office. (Since they would have levied the surcharge with any watch bought from a US site, it’s not a surprise, but potential customers from outside the US should be aware of this.)

    To be honest I have not purchased a SKX but has wanted to, but the cost if a SKX does not merit the purchase and since it was discontinued it just has gotten higher. The Islanders has been a great alternative and watches on Aliexpress have been as well. That stated the closest to the SKX is the islander and I have been considering the purchase. This video actually answered many questions I have had, such as the case. Thank you Mark for the video and from what I know you are manufacturing them yourself correct?

    Hey Mark, I think the main reason people buy the Seiko SKX is mostly brand recognition and it's an original design that's well known and desierable.
