1:35 How do I know if my pillow is causing my sinus congestion?
2:07 Easy remedy for sinus congestion
Today, we’re going to talk about one of the hidden causes of chronic sinus congestion. Microorganisms in your pillow could be causing sinus pressure, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, and snoring!
The average pillow has 7000 spores of 4 to 16 different types of fungus, especially if your pillow is made of synthetic material.
The fungus found in your pillow is a frequent cause of rhinitis, or inflammation of the sinuses. The fungus feeds on nitrogen and dead skin-and can affect the respiratory system.
Fungus spores are activated by moisture, so your sweat, drool, and wet hair intensify the problem. Spores can even grow roots into the fibers of your pillow.
Here are 4 signs that fungus in your pillow may be causing sinus congestion:
1. Discoloration on the pillow
2. Moisture on the pillow
3. Odors from the pillow
4. Sudden change in mucus membranes (difficulty breathing, stuffy nose)
To solve this problem, wash your pillow at least once monthly and ensure it’s completely dried. It’s also essential to clean your pillowcase at least once per week. Your pillow won’t last forever, so be sure to replace it once yearly.

Also lay pillows regularly in the sun. It dries them and the UV kills bacteria

We wash our pillow cases regularly but don’t wash the pillows thinking that the covers are protecting it. Will start washing the actual pillow now.
One of the challenges for the last 20 years is the difficulty finding GOOD PILLOWS. Most pillows today are micro fluff that squoosh down to nothing flat and offer no support. Or, spend a fortune on high end specialty foam. I’d love to find a company making pillows like they made 50 years ago.
yeah just out of good wool or feathers >.< ... all this plastic stuff definitely makes this even worse
I have my pillows and I love them. They are washable and you pick the level of filling in them.

They do have hypoallergenic covers that block the crap getting into your pillow/mattress.

Oh wow. This may be why I often wake up with such a bad sinus headache. Your videos are so helpful. Watching for years. Thank you and getting new pillows tomorrow
Another reason we do spring cleaning every year. Lot of stuff goes out in the sun for a few hours. This includes our mattresses. This chases or kills any bugs. It's been done for generations because it works.

Thank you Doc for another informative video 😊
Decades ago, I lived in W. Germany.. yep, before the wall came down. They have divine, huge square feather pillows.. and comforters. A few times a year this truck would come through town. It had some sort of air cleaning system where they emptied the cases.. gave them a wash and dry and refilled them with freshly blown around with I think Ozone to freshen them right up. Even in the 80s, it wasn't cheap but they did a fantastic job.. even sewed seams back up that they opened to remove the feathers/down.
Best advice, Dr Berg. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you! I'm glad that you liked this post.
I just ordered new pillows and washed my current pillows. Thank you for posting this!
I appreciate it so much; I'm glad it's helpful.
As ever ...many thanks Er Berg . Blessings from Sydney Australia .
Good luck over there
My sinusitis was caused by having a job where I have to go out in sub-zero weather to shovel snow and repair broken items. Now my nose is like a water fountain if I breathe in cold, damp air, super dry air is downright painful, and my sinuses get inflamed if I look at my nose funny. My late uncle developed the same problem after being put on oxygen when he was in the hospital several years ago. Dirty pillows can affect sensitive people, but it's only one of many factors.
EVERYTHING in life is just one of many factors.
Dont use pillows, use fleece blanket folded, wash often
Good idea! Those are for flea collection better than microbes collecting..(just kidding)😂
thats actually a really good idea....
Thanks for the great idea!
Fleece is made from polyester.
Polyester is made from petroleum.
Extremely bad idea.
@charlotte1366
Not all fleece is synthetic. It's just a matter of finding the right kind. Natural fleece is expensive, but in this case it would be worth it.
Thank you for your sharing this ❤❤❤
You are very welcome.
What a wonderful uplifting way to start my day 😊😊😊
FINALLY. THIS HAS BEEN MY STRUGGLE FOR THE LAST 4 YEARS.
I did get a new pillow but that improvement was short lived.
Get a glucocorticord steroid nose spray and use it for two weeks. Nasonex has a new one over the counter now. You'll thank me later.
Look for allergy pillow covers that zip. I’ve used them with good result. I get a new pillow & put a mite resistant cover on it immediately. Then use a regular pillow case on top.

Very thankful for this video. My daughter just now started sleeping with a pillow and she loves using the one my wife has. Pretty much all of our pillows are old and yellow and only the cases have been washed. I'm glad I caught this before she slept on it for too long.

When in a hurry and no time I have sprayed mine with Lysol and put them in the dryer. The sun will always kill germs too. I used to put mine on a towel on the hood of my car to freshen. These days the neighbor cats would be sleeping on them!♥️🐾🐱
How do you keep pillows from turning into lumpy messes when washing them? The washing machine always mangles them. I just wash the pillowcases.

I finally got the right ENT doctor. I had surgery and they found a ball of fungus far back in my nasal cavity - that had built a inpenetrable fortress. This problem is more common in areas where it is humid. I got it in North Carolina and it got worse in Florida. The doctor said it is more common than people would think, but still somewhat rare. If you have a persistent sinus problem, it could be a fungus.
Wow😮
Wow, would love to hear more! I've been suffering for years and I wonder if it might be connected to something like this!
@@bonobos375 Go to a ear, nose, throat doctor. Then they give you a couple CT scans - specifically toward the nasal cavity. They tried to treat mine with antibiotics first and that worked okay, but finally had to get surgery. Totally worth it. I feel a lot better.
Yes I have persistent sinus, how do I kill that fungus? Also I lost my sense of smell.
I am hoping my 17 yr old will inhale steamy water with oil of oregano. Allergy tests were negative. She has thick congestion and sometimes post nasal drip.
Great points and tips to share. Thank you Dr. Berg. 🩷
Thank you! Happy that you found it useful!
We purchased some of those "my pillow" brand pillows in March 2022 and we are super happy with them. They are the most durable washable pillow we have ever found. If I remember correctly, they cost around twenty dollars. We will definitely buy more of the same, IF these ever wear out. They go in the washer and dryer regularly and are still like new.
I have had good luck with the Temperpedic pillow and of course washing my bedding weekly. Yes those pillows are expensive, but they have helped me with my neck pain and migraines so I have been very happy with them and they don't get dust mites in the material!!!
Nasal rinses have helped me as well. Make sure to follow instructions.
And BE CAREFUL so that you don't put some bacteria in your sinus that infects your brain. Boil your water and make sure everything is clean etc...
❤Thank you so much Doctor Berg ❤

And by the way, I use the MyPillow brand which has been the best-ever pillow. They wash & machine dry easily.
Great video. I was wondering if you can make a video on vitamins and minerals that are best absorbed via the epidermis and/or intravenously because I feel that getting them orally sometimes isn’t the most optimal.
Wow 😮 I clean and renew pillows for hygiene but had no idea of the exact

I had a bothersome blocked sinus for years. I found that if I hummed for a few few minutes before falling asleep that it kept it unblocked. It kept my ear tubes open too.
Yes it’s called Bhramari Pranayama in India.. a yoga technique.. look up the technique to do it..Bhramari means drone/bumble bee.. so you buzz/hum like a bee.
Anti-dust mite pillowcases work very well.
Easy to wash (in hot water), too.
I’d have to question what the anti-dust Mite cover is made of??? So many hidden chemicals in everything these days. They could have put some level of pesticide in the material which essentially will be just as harmful as the mite itself or worse. Just my thoughts 🤔

I gave up pillows a decade ago. I still have serious sinus issues ever since I stayed at a dog hotel o long time ago. There’s a lot more creatures that can be picked up than the ones you mentioned. Dust mites, Demodex mites, bird mites etc can set up in your sinuses. They love darkness and moisture. No ENT will tell you the truth. Not sure why.

@@Drberg do we have to use hot water? A lot of soap? What if we don’t use the pillow for months.. does that kill what’s inside?
But most pillows are impossible to dry after washing, easier to buy a new one every 6-12 months
You talk about decades for owning a pillow - I used to sleep on a pillow that my GRANDFATHER owned!!!! I used it for decades until it was almost flat and turned grey. That pillow was a hand-me-down through the family. Of course that was when I was much younger and - let's say -stupid. Now I use a memory foam contour pillow. Gotta go check the washing instructions. Thanks Doc
I use full encasement pillows and mattress. I used to wake up itching sometimes and started using essential clove oil in the final rinse when I wash my clothes or bedding. It works because clove oil kills dust mites. I sprinkle boric acid on my carpet overnight which kills the mites and any other insects that can live in carpet. All of this works 👍
Yes, I can confirm that I improve a lot my resting getting rid of my pillow and buy a new one. Dont go to sleep with wet hair !
My sinus trouble disappeared when I lived in Australia, NZ and now in Hawaii. I attributed it to no air pollution, but I’m going to start washing my pillows anyway 😊
Grazie di vero ❤
Thanks for watching.

You are very welcome.
I've recently had crazy snoring and thick mucus with sinus issues galore. Looked at my pillow under the cover and it has a consistent yellow colour across it. It's not even an old pillow 😮
I'm off to the home store to get a new pillow.
PS, I love my washable ones
I change my pillowcases twice a week.
Now I know how often to wash my pillows. Even my lounge pillows get washed regularly and all pillows are dried in direct sunshine. I toss the filling around in the pillow till I feel its dry right through.
I’m still surprised pillows are so hard to wash. The design could be improved to unfold and make drying easier.
Time to wash my pillow and air dry it in the sun more often 😂
The MyPillow was designed specifically to be laundered with ease
When you wash them, the inside never fully dries. I found this out after washing a pillow, and a week or so later, cutting it open ........still damp.
And yes, it was in the dryer for more than a sufficient amount of time.
I put mine dry in front of a uvc lamp and I put them in the dryer on high. It really helps freshen them and I have no stuffiness.
I was literally thinking about this on the drive to work. Every day I wake up with stuffy sinuses but it gets better through the day. I am sensitive to dust so I just attributed it to that. I also only wash my sheets/pillow cases once a month or so. I will definitely start doing this weekly and also get those zipper style allergy covers that go under the pillow case.
Yes! Please make a video about rosacea.
Please see here: czcams.com/video/puxTMuZdHTA/video.html
Finally . Another videographer with a brain . Onward . Bravo . Pillows are cheap & a lot of people never change them or their pillow cases .
What do you think about copper-infused pillowcases?
when i change sheets and pillow cases, i spray the pillow heavily with either lysol, OR 91% rubbing alc, that i put in a spray bottle. does it get deep into the pillow, i assume not, so, thats something to think about. but i do spray the mattress all around and pillows before replacing the covers.
I think what you're revealing here is critical. I've had severe mucus For quite a long time which was diagnosed as dust mites, so I'm surprised you haven't mentioned dust mites. for my sake, I think it's good to learn the additional information you're talking about pillows And I think I can add that to some of the things that I already do. I sometimes put my pillows and my comforter through the Dryer to kill the dust mites Or lay them out in the sun which isn't always possible depending on the weather. I also washed my pillows in a washing machine sometimes but I think betting health is critical so I'm glad you're bringing up this topic from what viewpoint. Thanks! I do have medical support through the VA and nasal sprays have helped but not completely.
And now with this information today, Sunday April 21st, from Dr Berg, we'll all feel better.
