Watch this video to learn about the potential reasons why many Indian men tend to have a protruding potbelly and how it can be linked to their diet and gut health.
0:00 Intro: Why do many Indian men develop a potbelly, and how can it be addressed?
0:33 Potential factors contributing to abdominal fat
0:54 Differences between omnivorous and herbivorous diets
2:56 History of the Indian diet
4:54 Strategies for minimizing belly fat
The protruding potbelly is a common sight among many Indian men, and it can be attributed to a combination of factors such as genetics, lifestyle habits, and diet. While the tendency to store abdominal fat may have some genetic component, the high prevalence of this condition among Indian men suggests that there may be other contributing factors at play.
One potential factor is the traditional Indian diet, which has evolved over time. Historically, Indians consumed a predominantly plant-based diet with small amounts of meat, mostly goat or sheep. However, as modern diets have become more Westernized, there has been a significant increase in the consumption of ultra-processed foods high in sugar, seed oils, and refined starches.
These highly processed foods can cause inflammation in the gut and weaken the stomach lining, making it easier for harmful bacteria such as H. pylori to thrive. H. pylori is a type of bacteria that can cause gastritis and ulcers by weakening the stomach's protective mucus lining. To survive in the stomach's acidic environment, it produces ammonia that neutralizes stomach acid. This can lead to further digestive issues and an increased risk of developing diseases.
To address these problems, refined carbs should be eliminated from the diet, and protein intake should be increased, particularly from animal sources. Doing intermittent fasting and avoiding foods that cause bloating may be beneficial. Introducing betaine hydrochloride as a supplement can also help improve stomach acid levels and kill off pathogens in the gut.
In addition, understanding the digestive system and its functions can provide valuable insights on how to take care of it and address specific issues. Ultimately, by making mindful food choices and adopting nutritious eating habits, Indian men can work towards minimizing belly fat and improving their overall gut health.

I am Indian. The main reason for pot belly apart from the reasons cited by Dr Berg is that 90% Indians don’t exercise, eat frequently and eat a lot at wrong times, Sleep late and wake up early, eat sweets during festivals and during summers we eat 500 varieties of mangoes and jackfruit. 😅

indians dont exercise by going to gym , but aveeerage indian does enough exercise than most countries , real reason behind the bellly is genetics and high carb diet . sweets and sugar they eat is completely fine . trust me india dont have lot of varieteis in fruits compared to other countries . food variety is less too , we have many dishes for ourselves . stayed in korea, usa, japan , singapore . the amount of food you can get for cheap is on another levl. in cities in india they are expensive and not everyone cann afford to eat .

If you are 19 and you do gym and fit , it doesn't matter, but if can continue until your 50s or 60s , than you will be real fit person and that is the challenging part. 30-50 , this age is challenging to stay fit , because most people busy with job, family, business, making money in this age and eat unhealthy

There is a genetic adaptation for Indians that arose due to extreme droughts and extreme food & water scarcity - the potbelly is the body's defense mechanism of storing extra fat to tide over days when no nutrition is available - kinda like a camel lol.
Hence getting rid of it is even more difficult and one of the major contributors to the high number of incidents of Diabetes & metabolic & cardiac diseases now that nutritional availability has been completely reversed with cheap carbs.
Thus a person with a South Asian lineage will have to work harder to get rid of the fat even when the BMI is within range - a real bummer.

As an indian I can agree that our diet is almost exclusivey carbohydrates... overcooked vegetables, rice and bread. Pot bellies are ubiquitous they are everywhere. Exercise is not common. Salads are somewhat challenging in a country where water is not always safe for consumption so people prefer cooked over raw.

My childhood is mostly in rural India nearly 30 years back. Around 5 to 10 villages covered, its very rare to find a man or woman with that protruding belly. They were all muscular even at the age of 70s. No hospitals near by. But people lived happily. Starting from my parents generation, I started seeing this belly issue. Now, nearly everyone has it and hospitals are there in every corner !!!
I wonder how health deteriorated with in few decades 😢

    1. Desk jobs that consumes most part of the day .
    2. Little to no exercise
    3. Going to some place by walk or cycle is considered as low status. Once I went to meet my friend in a moderately nearby restaurant ( 1.4km) by walk , they first question was , why dont you come in a car , are u saving on your petrol bills ?...
    4. In an already carb rich diet style , we have started to eat much more carb rich western snacks. Waffles ( loaded with sugars ) , burger ( mostly refined flour ) , pizza ( refined wheat flour ) , fries ( palm oil / seed oil ). , etc ,etc in our diet.
    5. Addition of ton of cheese , mayo etc in chats , the prblem is its processed chesse and doesn't hv great quality. Cheese vada pav , cheese masala puri , cheese puff , cheese sandwich , cheese that , cheese this in everything. The problem is most cheese that is used here are actually not " cheese".
    6. Though a lot of our older generation did not hv a separate exercise toutine , most had an active lifestyle. Even household chores needed you to do a lot of physicsl work. But today a lot of people in metro cities do not like to do these. When I was discussing a topic about household chores in another platform one member commented that " mopping , brooming the house , cooking , washing vessels , drying clothes , folding clothes and sll other chores are maid's job ". Well , they just implied that its not their job and thought it as a cheap work to do. Its sad that certain ppl forgot that its not maid's job but each one's own job , since we dont hv time or unable to do , we are assinging a maid.

He did have some valid points like:
Diet: A high intake of processed foods, sugar, and refined starches is linked to weight gain and increased belly fat. These foods can disrupt gut health and metabolism.
Gut health: A healthy gut microbiome is crucial for digestion and overall health. Disruptions in the gut bacteria can contribute to weight issues.
Genetics: Genetics do play a role in fat storage patterns, but the environment and diet have a significant influence.
    Uncertain or Missing Points:
    H. pylori and belly fat: H. pylori can cause stomach problems, but its direct link to belly fat is not well established by research.
Animal protein: While protein is important, an overall balanced diet with sufficient fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is crucial for weight management. Eliminating all refined carbs might be restrictive and unsustainable.
Betaine hydrochloride: There's limited high-quality evidence to support its effectiveness for weight loss or gut health. It can even have negative side effects for some people.
Exercise: Physical activity is essential for weight management and overall health.
Calorie balance: Weight gain, including belly fat, happens when calorie intake exceeds calorie expenditure.
While the focus on processed foods and gut health has some merit, he oversimplifies the causes of belly fat.
His suggestion of eliminating refined carbs, increasing protein intake, and using supplements like betaine hydrochloride to address these issues is not supported by robust scientific evidence. Not to forget, the patients that he deals with mostly are the well-to-do NRIs in the USA, which ranks quite high in obesity rankings, and the main reasons for this as per US government organizations are inactivity, fast foods, and a combination of other factors and vegetarian food habits falls very low.
And Doctor, be a little more responsible, there might be some who lack critical judgment skills, who would believe what you said to be completely true, not understanding that your observations are for the mostly well-to-do obese NRIs who are living in states facing the same issues faced by most obese Americans due to same reasons as many research papers have stated, and these blind believers will start eating more meat and end up getting high cholesterol or cardiovascular issues only after writing, "I am also Indian, I live in India and I know this is so true."
Btw if there's a video on why some Indians lack critical thinking, I could write that cringy comment too..

You are absolutely right about Vegetarian diet causes bloating.
However, Indians have known this for centuries that a purely plant-based diet is detrimental to the stomach, large intestine, and Gut Bacteria.
Hence, traditional Indian cuisine involves a LOT of herbs and spices that aid digestion. Additionally, it also includes drinks that help break down and absorb food BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER a meal.
The trouble is modern households have all but forgotten these techniques to stay healthy and maintain a flat stomach. Modern foods lack most of the key ingredients. Instead, they focus on Taste (not even flavor), and shelf-live.
Add to it the hectic lifestyle, tiring commute, lack of exercise, and stress, the common Indian is at a HUGE disadvantage.
Have you wondered why South Indians, living in Southern India, have flat stomachs? The reason is they stick to traditional cooking methods, balanced meals, physical labor, and other techniques that promote good health.

Another reason for the pot belly being so prevalent can also be traced back in history, notably the widespread famines that occurred during the colonial rule. People were being starved which led to malnutrition which impacted the population genetically, the people who survived adapted to live on very low fat and store it more efficiently, this adaptation has persisted through generations causing even small amounts of carbohydrates to result in significant fat accumulation.

In any case, plant-based (veg) diet is perfectly fine; look at Novak Djokovic (tennis), Alex Morgan (women's soccer), Nimai Delgado (bodybuilder & vegetarian from birth) & Virat Kohli (cricketer) just to name a few of the well-known examples.
Main culprits causing the potbelly issue or syndrome whether in Indian men or, other persons globally, are: (i) lack of exercise, (ii) overeating & eating at wrong times, (iii) too much fat & sugar in diet, (iv) lack of self-discipline, (v) mental stress, and, not to forget, (vi) drinking.

Since the problem is partially due to low stomach acid and being vegetarian, here is an affordable solution that should help. Apple Cider Vinegar has been shown to lower the Glycemic Index of many foods, curb the appetite, increases stomach acid, and lowers weight gain. There are a number of videos on YT about this, and I found that it works.
Since Apple Cider Vinegar at about 5-6% acidity is very strong, it needs to be mixed with something to make it palatable. I make an vinegar, oil, spices salad dressing with it. I use about 1 tablespoon worth of vinegar on my salad. Works surprisingly well, and costs almost nothing. Strong acids can be hard on tooth enamel, so you may want to rinse after eating. I'm not a doctor or nutritionist, so do your research.

For example I noticed Edamame causes me bloating so I don't eat it~
I guess there's a common notion that all greens are good for you and that's not true! Some are good, Some are not good!
And you have to eliminate those which are not good!
Like sugar and dairy is a good place to start, And reducing/eliminating snacking, I got rid of 80% of my problems that way!

I am Indian too(Andhra) and live in Canada now but I was raised with mostly vegetables but also occasional meat, like chicken and lamb 2 or three times a week but we just ate huge amounts of rice and occasional chapathis. I ate Indian sweets occasionally and was overweight all my growing up years. I barely was active.
But my diet completely changed when I moved to North America at 21. I eat lesser rice(which I have completely give up now and I am 43 now). I eat Keto with more meat(mostly ground beef and eggs). I also workout everyday now and also intermittent fast.
I had a bit of a belly but it's been shrinking. My belly size is about 37 inches now. I've lost 30 pounds since December and am 5'8" and 160 lbs as of now.

It's a new phenomenon in India, I found that the generations of our great grandfathers were mostly doing two meals a day, they also do fast more often. There was common phrase "2 waqt ki roti".
But now, there is a 3+half meal pattern which most people are following.
Breakfast was not the part of Indian culture, the first food was always around 11 or 12.

I think here it has been generalised because Indian has the highest number of vegetarians, and Indian tends to have big belly after certain age. But these are 2 coincidences, there are other factors affecting belly circumference, which are ignored. Indians eat late, have mostly sedentary life, eat a lot of carbs, snack a lot and have a lot more stress especially the ones living in cities.

Dr. Berg has already addressed this issue few times. According to him knee problem among women/men happens because of lack of Vitamin K2 and calcification of arteries . He recommended eating foods with high amounts of Vitamin K2 like nattos, goose liver , Muenster cheese etc . and do some physical exercises. Never use calcium supplements as they don’t increase calcium in the bones but in the arteries . So Dr. Berg suggested have some sun light to get vitamin D3 , take this supplement if don’t have opportunities to get sunlight directly and taking enough foods with Vitamin K2 is a must .
