    My mate got a Tango O2, I told him to send it back because they are rubbish. He said “No, it’s Heljan, they are great with locos”. And I just got an Email from him saying it is rubbish and he is going to send it back.

    Nice little model, but it definitely looks better in L&Y livery (one of the rare instances where black is a good livery). I really liked the Class 5 when I saw it at the Railway Museum.

    I bought one prompted by your earlier review of it. It turned out to be a good runner for my branch line smallish layout. No big loads required, no hills, and a quiet runner, which I really like.

    An excellent review of a very nice locomotive. These engines were used by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway on express trains and had water pick up apparatus which allowed them to take water running both forwards and in reverse. One is preserved in York Museum. I have bought one for my collection.

    About 20 years ago I built a NuCast kit of the Belpaire boiler version, as its white metal it weighs a lot and it has the leading and trailing trucks just floating along. This puts all the weight on the drivers as a result it will pull a good load of coaches.

    I came back to watch this because I pre-ordered when I saw it on the rails website some time ago (I was ordering the Presidents and 812s I think). I had already bought the black LMS version. Rails wrote to me aobut 6 weeks ago to say that the price was going up and was I ok with this. I said I was but a week later I found this crimson version in my storage! I couldn't beleive I already had it, so I cancelled my pre-order. I have written a data base for a model railway collection but I haven't put my own stock into it yet and this is the result!

    Now I actually have one of these and I see it is not just me with the pickup issues. I find it can stutter a bit from cold but after a bit of running it can just creap along with no problem. Of course if I clean the wheels and track it goes perfectly. Interesting about pulling power as I have had mine pulling 18 coal wagons with no problem.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 5 lety

      @@SamsTrains 7822 Foxcote Manor makes me jump for joy. She excites me more than any other engine. That's because she has a shrill Swindon whistle that echoes around the railway scenery, and I always recognise it when I hear it. Foxy has more Great Western charm and magic than say Sir Nigel Gresley and Sir Lamiel. I love Foxy with all my heart and soul; she is my one true love and I wish I could marry her. Thus, I've taken a shine to Broome Manor 7805. This is why I love the Manor engines so much.

    It really looks good with the livery, I looked this up and apparently one of the class suffered a boiler explosion, those explosions are brutal on an engine, pipes blasting out of an locomotive or for the image on the wikipedia page on boiler explosions, a locomotive is thrown onto the roof of another.
    Edit: I would point out the odd one out, but it's a toss up between 21:41, 22:06 and 24:14, I'm betting on 24:14.

    Hi Sam, nice loco,
    It is a bit odd that r-t-r 2-4-2ts are rare beasts considering in real life 2-4-2 tanks were very popular. A lot of pre grouping companies used them to some degree, manly those with heavy commuter and suburban traffic. These include the GWR, LNWR, GCR, GER, NER, LBSCR and a lot of smaaler lines like The Wirral and Colne Valley. Its not that were rare in BR days either, they were used well into the 1950's, with some of the Great Eastern locos lasting until 1960. Surely a model of a GER F4 or F5 would be a good seller.
    Just interest, the GWR built 31 class 36xx 2-4-2 tanks in 1900, one of William Deans last designs. They were call Birdcages due their large well windowed cabs (The GER also had 2-4-2 tank with the same nicknme, the F6's). They used the same water pick ups the GWR used on their fastest express locos like the Dean Singles and the Badminton 4-4-0;s. The result was they picked water far to fast and the preasure burst the tanks open. In the end they were fitted with huge overflow valves, three times the size of normal fitting, they looked like huge metal mushroom, so the class got another nickname 'the mushroom tanks'
    Anyway great vid as always.
    Jon

    You don't drop the water scoop unless you are picking up water, therefor you wouldn't expect to see water scoops under the locomotive. The word is dissect not disect. People often mistake the word. There are two words bisect meaning cut in half and dissect which means cut open. Remember, that as a 2-4-2 it wasn't expected to take high numbers of coaches but was a good commuter engine.

    Hi. I am not very fond of Bachmann Trains. In fact I've got only four Bachmann locomotives : two 80-Ton 3-Truck Shays and two GE 44-tonners for switching in the yard of my (future) sawing mill company. I had to fully disassemble and rebuild even the pickups of both Shays (I also took the chance to install a Loksound , led lights, and a fire-effect led in the boiler) to be able to make them run smoothly. And I will have to rebuild the GE-44 tonners too... It was hard with the Shays...but I learnt a lot and I enjoyed a lot too. But I am totally convinced that the price for Bachmann locomotives is not fair. They are very good looking locomotives but their mechanics is rather lousy. In my humble opinion they don't offer what they are priced for.

Have you had any experience of these, and any suggestions about how to best look after them?, cheers, Stewart.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 5 lety

      Thanks so much Stewart! I've never had any experience with their N gauge motors, but if they're anything like Bachmann's, don't put any oil on the brush end of the motor (the end the wires are connected to) - and that should keep them in good shape! Also, running-in is essential with them before loading them up with rolling stock!

    Bachmann prices never come down. They milk the enthusiast for everything they’ve got . You are paying the Kader premium because they expect European levels of pricing from their U.K. arm. I got a Lancashire and Yorkshire liveried one, when prices were ok , probably about 5 years ago. I think it was a limited edition from Locomotion , but it’s almost never used. I find the wheel arrangement tends to derail easily . I actually prefer the maroon LMS one but definitely not buying another. The Fowler 4MT I think is the odd one out or is it a Fairburn tank , couldn’t quite make it out , dating from LMS days
