  • It was close, but clearly a ball. Do you think Kyle Schwarber's reaction was warranted?

Not a horrible call but this is just one instance.

wow... i cannot believe i am doing this, but here goes... i am going to defend this call by angel hernandez. not 100% agree with, mind you, but at least defend. most rule books define the bottom of the strike zone as the LOWEST part of the knee, as the pitch passes in front of the batter. interestingly enough, you don't find the words "both" knees, or "either" knee, just "the" knee. With the variance in batting stances found in the sport today, it is very common for a batter's knees NOT to be parallel with each other. therefore, most experienced umpires will go with the LOWEST part of the LOWEST knee, which i believe is entirely reasonable. if you freeze this video at 1:07, the pitch is not only ABOVE schwarber's LOWEST (back) knee, it is dead on the outside line/corner of the strike zone frame box. again, not definitive, but defendable. i have told many batters in my career: if you think the pitch is a ball, stand straight up (don't lean, crouch, etc.) and make my "ball" call obvious. one more final point: the strike zone has NOTHING to do with where the ball is CAUGHT (and don't even get me started on "framing"); ball/strike determination should be made IN FRONT of the batter and OVER the plate. anything beyond that is theatrics.

Yeah, you're making severely weak excuses.

It wasn't low, it was outside.

That would be great if it was a ball because it was low and not outside...

Did you look where the pitch actually went?

Wait - This guy strikes out more than most pitchers 30 years ago. 9 times out of 10 he swings and MISSES. Look at his BA last year and lifetime - It's a JOKE.

So what? He shouldn't get called out on a ball. And I watched this game. The ump was horrible. He was calling balls strikes all night. That's why Schwarber pointed to both dugouts. He's saying "You've been screwing up for both teams." Also, listen to the announcers at the end. They acknowledge how bad it's been and they're surprised it took someone that long to explode.

Do you have dementia? Or are you just really good at "missing the point"?
