Dont think I've ever seen a canister come off so cleanly, lol. The end result is absolutely stunning!!
Thanks. Glad you liked it
@@JPsBladeworksThat was really slick. Good technique.
Came off like Teflon. Lol
Mind blowing!! Never seen that before,
Exactly what I came here to say!
That verdigris finish on the copper bits is stunning! Gives the sword a "God of the Seas" feel to it. Amazing job dude! The whole build is beautiful!!!
Thank you
Dude thats amazing! Blows my entry out of the water! The copper patina is amazing and it just fits together so well!
Thanks. First ever copper patina. I think ill play with it more im the future. I really like the look of it.
Awesome work man! Make sure you show off the work at the end of the video a little longer with some nice pictures. Right now the final result was just flashed by. Your work is worth showing off.
Very true!!!
Ill work on getting better at that. It was hard getting good pictures of such a long piece. Thats why i chose to use the collage. Im glad you liked the build.
Congrats on all the Damascus work, man! I absolutely love the ball bearing tsuba. And yeah, that copper patina is epic too. I knew from the first pic you shared that it would make for a killer thumbnail! Cheers!!!
Thanks. Im bad at thumbnails but this one was easy since the black and blue make good contrast.
This is not damascus
DAMASCUS DOES NOT FUCKING EXSIST. PERIOD. This and every other metal like it are PATTERN WELDED STEEL.
Damascus even when it did exsist was a fucking horrible metal. It was beautiful, yes. It could hold a razors edge, yes. However if you dropped it on the fucking ground it would shatter like glass. Why do you think they used silk to demonstrate its sharpness!? Because anything else would chip the edge.
Damascus was a decorative steel. It had over 2% carbon content making it complete shit. Also just making a raw ingot could take up to 5 days of continuous work. It was a crucible "steel". Being made that way is what gave it, it's pattern. A pattern that no modern day Blacksmith has ever even come close to reproducing.
One day very soon the FTC is going to weigh in on this and ban the branding "Damascus" cause it's a fucking lie, it's false advertising. No one is making Damascus. Ever.
@@corbeauyannis8254 No one knows the real recipe for Damascus that knowledge was lost a couple hundred years ago.
@@paladinsmith7050 His point exactly... stop calling shit Damascus when it's not... NO one can make that stuff anymore.. This is Acid Etched billet stacking, I get it that doesn't sound cool but to lie just to market your shit product is sad as fuck. Just like Corbeau I too find it annoying when people call this garbage Damascus, some run of the mill backyard blacksmith couldn't ever make a Damascus blade, they were made by true craftsmen.
Can we just take a moment and congratulate this absolute amazing guy who went through and replayed to most if not all comments. That’s amazing keep up the great work it looks amazing👍🏾
I try to do all of them but the hate or shit talking ones make me want to reply in a negative way just to pick on them but i must stay professional 😅
Man! I was never a fan of canister, but you pulled this off nicely with that twist. Love the oxidized copper. Brilliant dude! ❤
Thank you. I play a lot with canister damascus. It gives a lot of freedom and headache to those that dont spray their cans for easy release
That Damascus pattern on the blade is absolutely gorgeous! Like granite. Spectacular work, sir.
Thank you. Im glad you liked it
Out of the park! Killer work bro! Gorgeous work!
Thank you. Glad you liked it. A lot of stress went into this build 😂
The patina on the copper looks awesome nicely done with the blade work 👍
Thank you. I appreciate you watching.
I've never seen anyone use chemistry this efficiently in forging.
Nice work, man!
Forging is the cooler chemistry
I wish i could do chemistry
Oh man! I was stressed watching the cold shuts from the twist. I’ve had that happen before too and it’s awful! I’m glad that you were able to work through it! 🎉🎉🎉
I had a few and it sucked. Normally i would grind all of them out in between the forging process but the time limit had me stressing over getting done.
The way that billet slid out of the canister was just...
The most satisfying thing I've seen in a long time. Wow. Don't you wish everything was that easy in metal working? 😂😂 my wife asked me what was wrong because i made a strange noise when i saw it.
The key is luck sprinkle with a lot of prep...mainly luck 🤣
Yes, that was as impressive as anything else in the build.
It was bs lol , lots of editing in his video . There’s a reason why you never saw a can “ peel “ off like that
According to John from Old Hickory Forge, length of the sword determined by user height, for his extra tall 6'4" or so frame, his is supposed to be about 30" blade.
Im 5'9" and i was going for a 30" but forged a 28" and ended up cutting they trouble areas and ended up with a 24.5" which is just over the upper limit of a wakizashi or a kodachi.
Fun Fact: wakizashi typically was the blade used for beheading@@JPsBladeworks
@snakenbits4279 this blade was used to behead a pumpkin
I'm a bowyer/general woodworker and have never ventured into forging. However, I appreciate the craftsmanship of blade smiths very much
This is truly a work of art! i love swords in general, and i love the Katana, but this took that to another level. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks glad you liked it
Totally agree...stunning job
Dude! I think this has been one of your best entries yet! I love the blue finish! Beautiful sword. 🤘
Thanks. That blue patina took the build to a whole different level. Im glad i took the risk because i had never done a copper patina before.
It's beautiful, but I like the tsuba most of all. If you could figure a way to do that with all the other small metal parts instead of the copper, it would be even better. Maybe smaller bearings.
Massive congratulations on the win this time, it’s been cool seeing your work just get better and better as time has gone on.
Thank you. I appreciate the support.
This looks like a bunch of fun.
What a beautiful finished product.
It was loads of fun and stress.
Great build, JP!! Truly one of your best! Kept me engaged the whole time! 👏🏻
Thank you. Glad you liked it. It was a whole new experience making a katana. Plenty difficult with all its pieces involved.
That turned out absolutely gorgeous 👍 I love the twist bearing canister it's one of my favorite patterns. One day I'm going to get a press and try it
Definitely try it. I have a chef knife on my desk from the same stuff. Cant wait to finish it up so i can check out how the pattern looks on a wider surface.
I’m absolutely blown away by this amazing artwork! You’ve definitely earned my sub and I’m looking forward to watching more of your content!
Thank you. I appreciate it.
That copper oxidation trick was really cool and came out stunning!
this is just great! looks magical! 👍
Perhaps the defect appeared due to the fact that you assembled the forging unevenly and immediately completely filled the bearings and then tried to fill the voids with powder. When you start pulling or twisting the workpiece, I advise you to sprinkle borax
Ive never sprinkled borax inside a can bit it might be a thought. I think it came from the twist. I dont think it was too noticeable in the video but i sheared it a little in my first twist. I over twisted and that caused parts to come up. I guess i pushed it back once i forged it back into a bar and missed it when i did my cut for the tip
@@JPsBladeworksYou definitely can’t put borax inside, but when you remove the casing or twist it you need to pour it in. Most likely, there was simply emptiness inside and the metal was not welded. But the katana is great
@@Vladislaw_Dragon I borax all my billets after they come out of the casing. I just dont show it on the video because it just lengths an already long video. Normally Canister damascus comes out with surface cracks so its always safe to pour some borax even if its not needed. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone smash a can vertically like that for the first press. That was neat. Looked like the can almost peeled itself off right then.
I always do top first to weld it because its pressured from all sides since the can is one solid piece. I used to do sides and they would crack or pop and create unwanted bulges and cracks at the end of the finished billets.
@@JPsBladeworks it appears to work out great, love that pattern! Well done sir!
@@MyScreenNameIsTroubledOne thank you. I appreciate you watching.
Fantastic build with just hand tools and skill/knowledge. Great shipwreck on copper pieces. Thanks for the share.
Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.
The time and effort shows, and the oxidized copper is so cool. The copper’s style would be cool implemented in a comic or manga.
I swear the U.S probably has more katanas in it than Japan or maybe even the rest of the world.
why do modern sword makers use so much metal? i watched a japanese master make a Katana n the amount of metal they use is literally EXACTLY the right amount. of course they do it all by hand but still makes me wonder why modern smiths use so much metal
Different smiths have different reasons. Most call it sacrificial steel. Make a mistake, cut it off, still got steel to play around with.
Not to mention when doing certain types of damascus, the kerf loss can be extreme, especially with feather damascus for example.
I often make extra billet to produce cooking knives, kiridashi, etc. may as well! Also, matching gane in a wakizashi or tanto can be cool.
You can get quite precise with steel quantity if you want to. In Japan steel is a valuable natural resource and in the US its cheap and plentiful. Go price some hitachi blue paper steel compared to a chunk of 1095.
It all depends on what steel you use. Most damascus must be cut to shape, not forged, because that would mess up the pattern. Some people like extra steel to have the freedom to change the blade on the fly. That japanese Smith knew what he wanted to do and probably made many before.
Cause they all stupid content creator with only online experience 😂😂
Because material is more ready and not as costly. Plus you can reuse things you cut off and what you grind off if you want. 💯
That was beautiful ❤ wish you well being and prosperity so that we could see stuff like this more & more 🎉
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Amazing work, craftsmanship, and insane detail.

Beautiful finished product, a true work of art.
Thank you
Fantastic work man! I love the look of that copper patina, definitely gotta try that too. And the way that canister came off was soo satisfying 🙌
Thanks bro. Its all about the prep work.
i bet this weapon will keal
stunning work mate, im no expert but i can say some of the best work ive ever seen!
Really dig the pattern, like flames licking the blade, and the oxidised copper is a really funky touch too.
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
Not bad! Lots of luck in your future projects!
Thank you. I appreciate the support.
What a beauty
Thank you
Absolutely beautiful!!! Great work!
Thank you
That's a awesome build hope u do win I been watching u from the beginning and u have came a very long way and doing a great job at it. Thanks for sharing
I appreciate you watching for so long. We have some tough competition but i appreciate the kind words.
Beautiful blade and an awesome looking finish with the pitina.
Thank you. Glad you liked it.
Nice job on that sword. I love the patina you put on the copper parts.
Thank you. It goes well with all the black on the sword.
Beautiful execution and end product. Looks like something from Warframe. Your method definitely adds depth and character. Thanks for the video.
Glad you like it!
yea, a Zaw, before gilding ^^
Killer look! I may try this now that I have figured out how to patina copper. The last one I did was just like this with a sanmai blade, and fire-red copper for everythint.
I want to try a fire red version with a different pattern.
wow . just wow ... I love the copper .. it makes the blade pop !
Thank you. Glad you likes it
1:55 I seen that. You're fired! 😂
Im sorry boss 🥲 please just one more chance 🙏 i really need this job to support my family back home 😭
Absolutely Stunningly Gorgeous piece of Art
You are an amazing artist! I would love to have a Katana like that!
Greetings from Iceland. This is just beautiful work sir! I love the copper!
Greetings from Florida. Im glad you like it!
Beautiful blade! You have come a long way from your first videos, keep up the good work. Definitely a worthy contender.
Thank you. Glad you liked it. I appreciate you.
Beautiful sword sir! Very nice work and the removal of the canisters was impressive . Great job brother
Thank you very much!
Very beautiful build thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching
Outstanding, experience craftsmen are truly amazing .
Thank you for the kind words but im very much a newbie
We all have our skills , but yours is truly an art form . I would love to have one of your blades . All the best to you .
Great job. Love the patina on the fittings.
Thank you
The ammonia patina on the components looked great! The blade steel 😍 superb.
Its the first time i do a patina like this. Im glad it came out so well.
Just atopping by because that sword is beautiful. Great craftsmanship!
Thanks for stopping by.
Dang man I LOVE the Patina!! The colors and whole build are just Awesome!! 😃👍👍👍
Thanks. I took a gamble with something i never tried before and it seems to have paid off. Did you make a video on your build? I saw the pictures in the group and they look awesome.
Oh man it definitely paid off- the greens are so vibrant, it looks beautiful and a good gamble to take! And yeah I just posted up my build video (it's a bit on the long side), but thank you so much, I wasn't sure if going a bit non-traditional would be ok but seems like some people are diggin them haha!! 😁🙏🙏
@SmittyTutDesigns most guys went non traditional because if everyone went traditional it wouldnt be as entertaining or fun. I look forward to watching your video soon.
@@JPsBladeworks Yeah that was my thought process haha! And thank you so much! 😁🙏
Wow! Super interesting method with super attractive results. Great job! 😊
Glad you like it!
That's one of the coolest patterns I've ever seen.
I'm in love ....why I haven't crossed paths with this channel is beyond me. I want one now aaaaa how I love swords.
thank you for the kind words
Gorgeous piece of work!
Thank you. I appreciate it
man that is a beautiful sword! nice Job on the canister as well. wish all mine came off that clean! very well done!
Thank you. Its all in the spray paint...and a bit of luck...okay a lot of luck 😅
Beautiful work stunning piece
Thank you
Absolutely beautiful! ❤
Thank you. Glad you liked it.
Beautiful sword man! I like the use of tea to darken and the patina on the copper.
Thank you. Glad you liked it
I want it 😮😂 Your work is incredible!
Thats so awrsome. I want one
Glad you liked it
Cool blade man. Love the ship wreck patina.
It was my first time using it and i gotta say it transformed the build. The contrast is beautiful.
That was the cleanest canister release I’ve ever seen! You have some serious skills
All luck my friend
@@JPsBladeworks Curious what was canister coated with? Very nice sword btw ;)
@fringeminority150 its white spray paint. Does the same thing as white out but applies easier and more evenly and dries a bit faster. But it has to be white or it wont work.
@@JPsBladeworks Ahh ok thanks man !🙏
that blade looks amazing!
Thank you
Tremendous work
Thank you
I wish I could afford one like that. What a work of art.
Thank you
greate job man,looks very good
Thank you
Hi 👋 there buddy it's my first time commenting on your video 📹 and looking that katana I have just to say wow!.👌 blessings
Thank you for the mind words and welcome to the comment section. Im glad you liked it.
Oh my GOD that blue pattern is just so beautiful. It reminds me of the ocean. Like Poseidon himself would wield this if he was a samurai
I will definitely experiment with the patina more in the future. I loved the result as well.
Some people have to learn the hard way about using power tools without something to protect their hands. Safety first, always.
Yes indeed
Beautiful weapon!! Well done!
Thank you
Bro! Outstanding work. Blade made easy work of that pumpkin!👌🏻
Thanks. I shall now dub the blade "The Pumpkin Slayer" 😎
Beautiful
Thank you
Nice work man! Canister came out great!
Thanks. The past 2.5 years of canister builds is finally paying off.
This build looks great
Thanks
Love it!!! Nice work dude👊🏼👏🏼
Thank you. Glad you liked it
I was with you in your adventure and I liked how the ball bearing damascus turned out in your final product. 😃
This content is incredible and you show almost every step along the way this stands out from the other creators. I am a little more interesting in the explanation on how things are done something like what foureyes furniture would do.
Thank you for the kind words. Ive never heard of foureyes funiture but ill check him out. I enjoy watching and learning how to build things.
that's a really cool pattern. Very nice sword. Well done.
Thank you
Какая красота.
Моя мечта детства это быть кузнецом. Мне 33 года и я ещё не сделал ни одного шага к этому😢
Im 29 about to be 30. Its never too late to play with fire 😁
I get so jealous looking at your grinders with those massive belts. I have this tiny little one.
Mine is the cheaper one on top of that. Some of those go up to 4k. Id say mine is small too
Great video, really well done JP.
Thanks
I love the color. It's incredible. I would have died to see that color show up in the blade.
I wish i knew how to do that. The bright blue makes the pattern in the sword look a little dull in my opinion
This is the best one out of the ones I have seen great job bro
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Beautiful sword! Congratulations on all the success with this video, and canister Damascus.
Thank you very much!
I love watching these type of videos😊
Im glad you liked it. I had a lot of fun and stress making this 🥲
@@JPsBladeworks the only times I use CZcams is to watch forging content, I just go on CZcams and just search up “forging” and js watch something I haven’t, glad I found this one
Wow that came out insane !!!!
Thanks
That was great! Twist bearing canister!?!? What!!! 🔪❤️❤️
No such things as too much of a good thing. Or 3 good things 🤣
Congrats on winning the Samurai Challenge!
Thank you. Super excited i won
Just remember to re-square lightly and grind back the billet after twist before drawing it out to prevent those cold shuts 😉
Nice can peel, honestly cleanest I think I’ve seen.
Nice job but I would question it in a Forged in Fire style strength test. I expect one of those cold shuts would blow it apart.
I agree. Normally i would take all the precautions on keeping it as clean as possible to minimize cracks but i was low on time and this was for a youtube challenge so corners where cut. Im going to build another one once i get a chance and will take my time with it to get everything right...hopefully
@@JPsBladeworks agh sorry I did. It pick up on it being a short time frame! Well I’m enjoying the video format so will be subscribing to follow your work 👍🏼
I thought there might be some cold shuts based on that aggressive first squeeze after the initial vertical squeeze
Glad you finally tried pvp! Been watching you since day 1. I’m 2100 in arena and I lead 2k+ rbgs so if you ever need help let me know!
