After getting about a thousand comments on the last video asking to see how these swords cut I decided to dust off the old Tameshigiri stand. I pit a $2000 Paul Chen Kami katana against a $200 knock off I bought on Amazon to answer the question, how much better does an expensive sword cut compared to a cheap one? Are katana's pay to win? Well stay tuned to find out.
Here are some quality cutting katanas that won't break the bank:

A lot of people seem to think that you have to fold the metal to make a "real" katana. The reason Japanese smiths folded the metal is because they usually smelted the steel themselves. The purpose of the folding was to drive contaminants out of the steel. Modern steel doesn't have this problem so folding is unnecessary unless you're making a pattern welded blade with two different steels simply for looks.

The Paul Chen Kami line is truly the Lamborghini of production swords. They're pretty goddamn beautiful.
Your $200 katana is probably 1045 high-carbon steel which is a fine functional steel, but you have to re-sharpen it a fair bit because its edge retention isn't as good compared to harder steels like 1060 or tool steels.

    • @RyoHazuki224

@@RyoHazuki224 It just won't harden much past about Rockwell-C of 60-62. Edge retention is going to suck no matter what you try - short of reforging it into Damascus! I do have to disagree with video on the cost to sharpen it. It's soft, which means it easy to sharpen. It's cheap, which means you don't spend thousands sending it to a professional katana sharpening master. You do it yourself for cheap - a couple of swipes on stone is all that is required to get the edge back on it.

Anything can be an art because anything can be recreated and redesigned and reperfected. Essays, art, music, your flipping gaming setup, gun building, car modding, whatever. Is it gonna be easy or good art? Maybe not, but that's besides the point. Katanas are art. There is an art to metallurgy and crafting sheathes and sharpening blades and every other step in katana construction.
To say otherwise would be to disrespect the hundreds of generations of metal workers and craftsmen that have spent their lives perfecting the art of Japanese metallurgy. Generations and families would have wasted their lives because people with your mindset dismiss their sacred craft as "subjective art" in an incredible show of self centeredness. You've no right to come along and diss basically an entire subculture and to an extent, Japanese culture, because you have no appreciation for beauty.

@Ronnie Jones You're comparing apples to oranges. Most European bladed weapons were made for stabbing or well, stabbing. Hence the straight blade. Also helps when you're parrying if the blade is you know, thicker. Its a weapon meant for the masses. No single side to contend with, no "fragility" basically.
On the other hand (like the aforementioned dao), the katana is made for slicing. Its a cutting weapon, not a stabbing one. Thus, 2 blades aren't necessary, and the blade doesn't need to be as thick as a longsword's.

The difference can be seen with just how clean the Kami Katana cuts things, It made the mat look like a topographic map.
However the $200 sword made the mat look like a Terrain Map.
Makes me wonder how a $20,000 Katana from Feudal times would cut. Those blades were crafted for actual Wartime I bet it's even more perfectly crafted to the point that it would just feel like an extension to your own arm. They say it's all in the Balence of the Handle & Blade. Even down to just 0.01 grams can make all the difference to how a Katana preforms.

I can't thank you enough for sharing this video! I have two daughters, one age 25 and one age 9. I had custom "sister" swords made for them. one is a $750 Katana which was folded 16 times for 32768 layers and has a clay forged hamon. (and of course a full tang, unlike that amazon sword most likely) my other daughters sword is only 150.00 and made of spring steel. My older daughter speaks Japanese, and lives in Tokyo right now, but sadly to posses her Katana, she would have to be granted a permit. (does no justice to the Japanese to be unable to own their artwork)
Anyway, red color is cooked into the steel and the sword is etched "Red Irene" (Irene being her middle name).
My younger daughters sword is etched "Blu Destiny",[as her middle name is blu] is electroplated in a blue color (which is not throughout the metal). Since I cherish the workmanship of my older daughters Katana, and its wonderful strengths, and craftsmanship, I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU TAKING YOUR KAMI TO THE MAT FOR US!
