Little did you know, he retired 50 years ago, bought that Katana off Alibaba, and read the backstory on a Bloodborne fanfiction forum
Sometime after ww2, my great-grandpa was walking through a subway in Tokyo and bought a real wakizashi, now we jest that it's the "family sword," even though our real ones were lost in the Meiji Restorations. It actually had imperfections from blood on it, so I know that a previous owner was not very careful about washing it off after combat, and that it did actually maim someone. It was interesting to get it appraised a few years ago.

Found your video after looking up how to tell if a katana is real. Had an old katana from my grandfather who was in WWII and wanted to see if it might be real or fake. No wave on the blade from the hardening, or anything ornamental. But after doing further research, turns out it's a type 98 Shin-Gunto produced in 1938. Was made in mass for the war and taken as trophies by allied forces during their fight in Japan. Your vid helped me not just give up hope after I saw the pattering of the ray skin like you mentioned and decided to continue looking into it. Thanks for the info!

I recently got myself a $157 katana that is made out of T10 tool steel and is differentially hardened. It has a real hamon and the blade is pretty good. Has good crisp lines, good shape and geometry, especially for the price. However, the fittings and the handle are far from best quality. Cheap Chinese katanas can be used as project swords where you can practice your polishing skills on them, maybe re-wrap the handles to learn the art of tsukamaiki, and so on. But you should ALWAYS insect your sword very carefully before you start swinging it at targets. The Chinese like to cut corners big time - not a good thing when we are talking sharp objects.
no fuckn shit my guy the chinese ones are props
Where'd you get it from

@@2miligrams Probably from Dynasty Forge but their price went to 200 now though
AGREED!!!!!!!!!
So many people overlook this. Either they want to make swords/knives or just buy and use them, but very few consider a beautiful in-between - refurb a good starter with problematic fittings. There are so many websites that sell knife blade blanks at various levels of completion for you to subsequently customize. Musha by Musashi are good katanas that just need high quality fittings (tsuba, handle ect). It's a great place to start because there's no forging or stock removal. You're working backwards by working on your finishing skills first. I'm so glad you pointed this out. Many of the blades are made in the same dies on the same production line. They change the steel for marketing (the rawstock price difference between 1060 and 5160 isn't huge).

Great videos about swords. Ive been wanting a hand made Katana for a long time and I can afford one now but I had no way of knowing what is real quality vs fancy looking junk. They all say high carbon steel, hand made folded steel for $30-$100 ready for attacking water bottles. Then I see similar swords listed for $1500-$3000 and no way to know so the information about Paul Chen was really helpful and I ordered several swords from them. Ive bought so many cheap swords and weapons over the years that $599-$1000 was not that much and something that I could easily sell later. I wish they made more throwing weapons besides the darts.

You see, I have had my Wakizashi for roughly 5 years now and I have been very satisfied with it's function. I am not a professional, however. Not even a student.
My Edo is solid when I try to pry under it with my thumb, The Rayskin seems legit to me, based on your description, both Tsuba and Saya have held up nicely (some surface markings), the finishing and engravings are firm, never come loose, and not discoloured, the Blade is still quite flawless and cuts clean, though I do maintain the sword by keeping it polished and drying it off, but I've never had to sharpen it yet. I don't go to classes but I have practiced in the yard by myself every other week or so. (maybe not EVERY other) I cut through water bottles (no fedora) and generally just practice movements I watch in tutorials. I could probably use some advice in this regard. =P
My concern is wholly with the Sageo, as it is rather thinner than you describe, thicker than shoelaces, but has become somewhat worn over the years. Should I be concerned?

Another thing I'm kind of surprised you didn't mention is the engraving that will be on every *nakago* (tang) of real Nihonto, Japanese steel. So! Just to expand on a couple things from my own experience as a swordsman: First, a little primer on terminology for understanding. =)
Under the *tsuka* (the hilt, or handle, made of wood) is a piece of metal that, along with the *mekugi* (the wooden peg you see poking through the handle), will hold the parts of the sword together. _Newer_ swords usually have two, while _older_ swords only had one. If there is a poorly fitting *mekugi*, the sword will fly off like blowing the wrapper off a straw at your friend across the table; except it's a 100 cm razor.
(If this actually is a technique I'm sure it's too advanced for me and would probably translate to "flying helicopter of death" or something)
But anyway, notice how the Kami katana has rounded and colored mekugi that matches the *menuki* (the little mid-hilt decoration between the braids) compared to the cheaper one that looks like a $1.25 sale on 1/4 in dowel rod.
So to reveal the original point, when one removes the *mekugi* by tapping the narrow side, you can actually remove the handle completely along with the other parts of the sword, and see that there will be an engraving on either side of the blade that tells the swordsmith's name, the relative date according to the period in Japan, and the location in which the swordsmith lived.
You have no idea how helpful this was. As someone without the in depth knowledge, the most detrimental thing getting in the way of me making a purchase is the overwhelming flood of websites that come up as a result of a google search. And I can't help but feel that 90% of them are taking advantage of an uninformed buyers market (aka people just like me) knowing that they can make a quick buck, with minimal effort, off peoples ignorance.
