    I just did some of this on my Swiss Cross. It works great. I used a 10-44 Ekar cassette. The bolts in the back of the spider lightly rubbed the spokes and I filed them a little flatter and now it’s fine.
    It seems that with the extra thickness added by that extra low cog, that I’d have no chance of clearing my spokes. This is on a pretty standard Bitex hub with N3W driver.
    Aside from that, this video showed me what I’d need to do a conversion to 1x13. I appreciate it.

    I love one by and I love your experimental ideas. I assume that you and Dirk are able to communicate in some way, while even for me as a native German, I am not able to get satisfied with his harsh and unprofessional way to to deal with possible new customers...
    The shown system here is great. But for my habits a little to much experimental. I love the RatioTech Ideas combined with Garbaruk cable accentuated. For now I went to sram axs with garbaruk to go 12 speed one by.
    I spoke with Garbaruk - they are planning more gravel/cyclo-cross specific cassettes with less gear jumps in the smaller cogs in the near future.
    Let's hope someone is able to hack srams systems, flash or offer an open software thats is able to use Archer Systems. With Sram Shifters and dérailleurs in combination with garbaruk cages to get us more gears with one by systems...

      Thanks so much and yes Dirk can be a bit rough around the edges. I really like Garbaruk and what they have, I just wish they had those closer cassettes so looking forward to see what they come out with. I am so please with this wireless set up, I have no desire to go with Sram AXS or Di2 until they offer 13 speed or 14 speed. I just prefer all the options the Archer gives me. I will be getting those satellite buttons when they come out and plan to have 2 on the right side and 2 on the left so I will have a button right where I need it in the hoods or the drops. Also the TRP Hylex brakes are better than Sram offerings and most say they are as good as the Magura brakes that are on the Campy Ekar set up.

    Loved the Archer set-up with the Wolftooth tanpan. I have the Archer and was thinking about selling it because it was slow shifting - then they came out with the new batteries. In the previous video you suggested the 10 speed Tanpan with the sprint batteries - are you thinking about adding the tanpan to this setup or does it shift fast enough with the sprint batteries?

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 2 lety +1

      Honestly it shifts plenty fast with the Sprint Batteries. Since the gears are that little bit closer than the mtb 12 speed, it doesn't have to move as far so the shifts are quick. I may throw a Tanpan on it to try but I will probably just keep it on the MTB since that is where the faster shifts are more important.

      @@BlackWaterCyclist Thanks for the response. I havent tried my sprint batteries yet. My problem was/is the extreme hills on my local fitness loop - the original DX-1 was slow enough that it was a PIA to shift quickly enough to get up some of those hills - combined with the fact that I am still 2X w/ a front derailleur. the different shift interfaces were/are not a pleasure. I may like Archer's new paddle shifter if it is real and not vapor ware.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks! Actually you cannot because the XX1 Rear derailleur has a parallelogram cage which means it just moves horizontal and it uses the chain length to pull the upper pulley away from the cassette as you shift to larger cogs to make room between the cassette and pulley. If you shifted the front from the large ring to the smaller ring, it will slam the upper pulley into the cassette. 2x rear derailleurs move diagonally along the cassette and the upper pulley is located right at the pivot point of the cage so it is not impacted by the length of the chain. I hope that makes sense and I probably should make a video on that.

    Hi - I'm so glad I found these videos - been trying to work out how to get my perfect mullet 1x system ready for an epic Alps trip in the summer (17,000m of climbing in 6 days - wish me luck!), and you have totally cracked it - with the Dirk S hack and the Archer wireless - brilliant! Question - when you went 12 to 13, you just added a 42T extender cog without bolting it to the cassette. But when you went 13 to 14, you did bolt the new 42 extender to the cassette. Can you explain why the difference? I'm looking at going 12 to 13, but using the 12s Rotor 11-36 and adding a 42. The Rotor 11-36 seems slightly better to me than the SRAM. The Rotor is tighter:11,12,13,14,15,17,19,21,24,27,31,36 (+42). Trying to work out what driver I will need. Probably going to need Dirk, I guess! Thanks again for doing these videos, much appreciated.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 2 lety +4

      Sounds like you are in for an adventure!!! Bolting the extender to the cassette is better in several ways, it is stronger, less likely to bend or flex. With the 12-13 jump, the extra cog has to be so thin to fit on the freehub body with the stock 12 speed cassette that it is usually a much thinner cog. I have had a little flex in the 40T I used with the 10-33 sram cassette. When I put the e13 42t on the 10-36 cassette, I had to machine down the middle of the cog so it was thin enough to fit the 12 speed cassette on. With the bolt on that the Campy allows you to do, it fixes the issue of not enough room on the freehub and the cog can still be thick and strong enough.
      I really like the Rotor cassette and I was thinking of going that route initially but the issue is the Rotor cassette has the same spacing as the 12 speed eagle which is wider than the AXS and Ekar cassette/chain so there is absolutely no room on the Rotor to add an extender, it is already maxed out. The Campy Ekar with the extender from Dirk is going to give you the most range and the tightest gear combo. Only downside is that its harder to find the N2W freehub for it unless you have a very common hub like DT Swiss.

    Wonder if there is a way to do a 1x13 that fits HG 11 speed hub. Currently, there is a 12speed cassette available for the hg11speed. Trying to keep a good range from 11-40 but with more shifts in the 15-21 range for Triathlon (54 chainring) without killing the possibility of the bike to climb.

      I have been looking for something like that with no luck for a back up Wheelset and for a daily trainer but I haven't found anything. Closest thing I can find is the Sensah 11-34 12 speed cassette. There is absolutely no room to fit an extender on the free hub. I wonder if I could get a 40t to be attached to the 34t and have it dished in towards the spokes.

      @@BlackWaterCyclist My comment isn't necessarily about the Archer system (I think it's actually a well designed product because of it's universal compatibility, especially MTB).
      My comment is more about the specific 14 speed hack and someone who wants a smooth transition from something they already have to get 14 speed. Having to swap to a Campy freehub (assuming it's even an option for their wheelset), Aerozine being the only supplier for the cog that comes from overseas and needs machining, having limited chainring/chain choices, swapping to TRP brakes/hoods, living with every part being from different manufacturer, etc, is a lot just for the average person to ever want to mess with. I think it serves more as a showcase of what's possible for those who like to tinker than what's practical as a XPLR competitor for the average person.
      That said, the door is wide open for Archer (or someone else) to start developing their own wide range cassettes that are HG/XD freehub compatible with typical 12 speed chains... That will really be a cool value proposition.
