Love the archer. My NX just never would shift right. Had a shop work on it and still didn’t work great. With the archer my shifting has be excellent.

If I buy a Tanpan, is it better to get a 10 speed one, or are the pull changes the same?

So with the tanpan, it would make the adjustments less fine, since it's changing the ratio. Do you find this to be an issue? Is the overall speed acceptable?

Do you know if you could mount the shifter on the left hand? I'm having issues with my right thumb and, though it would be weird to change, it would be way less painful when riding. Also - I don't think you can use regular AA batteries in the shifter - i think the voltages are different in the stock batteries. Regarding using for a dropper ... I watched a interview with the owner of Archer and he said that it's technically possible, but would need some custom programming. I guess the Archer program is open-source, so someone that knows what they are doing could hack it to make it work.
Sorry for the delay. Great input here on the battery issue. I am going to remove that portion of the video. I was under the impression that you could use any AA from when I first started following Archer years ago but I was mistaken.
You could try to get that shifter on the left side but I think the extra portion sticking out would get in the way when you grip your bar. I would hold out for the MDR system where you can place buttons where you want them and you could put them on the left side.
From what I know, you could contact Arche and get a left version of the remote control (only the new one with the thumb button)
I noticed that the Shimano pull ratio is much higher than the SRAM pull ratio. Wouldn't that mean that the archer would potentially work much better with a Shimano or Campagnolo derailleur than the SRAM derailleur? Would definitely like to ask more about the 1x13/1x14 drivetrains you've dabbled in. Could the 1x14 Ekar drivetrain be done with a Shimano derailleur (like a GRX810 gravelset derailleur), or are the SRAM/Campagnolo derailleurs the only ones capable of doing this?
The older shimano had better pull ratios for Archer but the newer ones are about the same. Now that they are cramming more gears in the same place the pull ratio is getting to be very similar between all brands. I'm not sure on the campy stuff bc they don't publish their newer pull ratios. A GRX would work wonders with this system. I just prefer the SRAM because it has the locking cage which makes it super easy to switch wheelsets from road to gravel. I've had a few water issues with my D1x but Devin has been amazing and sent me replacements ASAP. He said they are addressing that issue on future models.
Another option that is coming about is what is called NXS from cell cycling who bought the x shifter design. It looks really promising and I have been in talks with them on getting a unit to test.
Have you had any issues with the tanpan causing change in shift points? My shifting seems to change every ride and I have to go through and set it up again.
¿Do you know which of the Tanpans pull the most cable? ¿What about the Jtek Shiftmate? ¿Do V-brake adapters fit in derailleur ferrule slots?
An awesome video with a lots of info thank you, but I think the tanpan 10 speed would actually be quicker for that setup(not that much quicker lol but it would help)
Thanks for the positive vibes. Yes you are correct. The 10 speed version would be quicker. I already had the 11 speed version sitting around and that's why I used it in the video.

I think your focus on the shifting speed of the D1Xtrail is misleading. The chain is not going to move to the next cog any faster unless you are also spinning the cranks at high speed. Might be relevant to someone racing, but not to the casual rider. If you compare speed, I think comparing to a cable actuated trigger shifter makes more sense, since that is what people would buy this for to replace.
The slower the shift, the more teeth you’ll spend in the old gear as you’re pedaling. The difference is meaningful and noticeable.
How do you compare the archer with sprint batteries and tan pan to the speed of AXS?
It is very close. I would say the AXS maybe a hair faster but it is so small that you probably would not notice it.
It is a good review I just think that the batteries do not come out that quickly and easily which I do find annoying that is my only real complaint

I would suggest comparing this to the Cell Cycling X-shifter. Already has many of the improvements you're asking for.
I bought the XShifter not knowing if it was ever going to be sent to me, so then I went ahead and bought the archer D1X. I have been able to compare both. Pros and cons to both.
I was backer #12 for the X-shifter and it never showed up. I have emailed and filled out Cell Cycling's Kickstarter claim form numerous times with no reply. I think the X shifter is amazing but I fear the lack of support from them would be a deal breaker.

@@BlackWaterCyclist I just looked into X-shifter by Cell Cycling a bit and it looks like that fell to pieces essentially, but now Cell-Cycling is advertising NXS Wireless? I'm highly skeptical after reading what happened with X-shifter and that everything on the NXS Wireless website seems like nothing but renders.
You can’t just go to the store and pop in AA batteries. These batteries have a higher voltage than regular AA batteries and the unit will not work without the proper voltage.

On a roadbike. Wireless straight forward. But for my mtb. No money can bring me to Wireless. I stick with my m9100 derailleur. I don't want any issues beside a "ripped off cable" in 10 day alps trips - which I usually do .
Yes, I lean more towards mechanical on the MTB. I am now testing the TRP TR12 system which is mechanical and really enjoying it. Its nice to be able to jump on a bike and start riding without having to turn on your shifter.
What I got from this review - Archer will make your pre-existing drivetrain shift slower.

7:31 I don't think those are AA batteries.
Remote SHOULD also have attached basic cheap segmented LCD display! How am I supposed to know which gear I have selected? On normal "analog" system you always know that!
Furthermore , buttons on remote should be in positioned in vertical position not in horizontal! (just like on ebikes!). Regarding batteries. I would personally prefer bigger more common 18650 (3ah).
Nevertheless the biggest problem for me is lack of that aforementioned LCD display.
I really don’t see the point of Archer. You kinda mentioned how it’s just solving a problem that doesn’t exist. Archer simply shifts too slow and that affects performance.
There’s only 2 choices - stick with cable shifting or go with TRUE wireless shifting AXS.
It’s been years since AXS has been released. What’s taking Shimano so long to come up with a counter product?
This might be a good product, but anyone who tells you that a product that interfaces with a mobile devices is future-proof does not understand the nature of operating systems in mobile devices. You are entirely dependent upon a company like Archer releasing an application for each change of the operating system in the mobile device. If for example you have an Android device, you need to realize that Android is a highly variable operating system. It is entirely possible to have stranded equipment because an application will not be written for changes to the Android operating system. Yes, you could still use this device with the paired shifter levers you install on your bike, but if the application will no longer work, you cannot interface to change it.
Too slow dont worth the money.
