  • “There’s a concern that Turkey’s ambiguity in this might be encouraging Russia rather than deterring them.”
    Blocking British minehunters destined for Ukraine could lead to NATO going to war with Russia, says Hamish de Bretton-Gordon on Frontline for #TimesRadio.

      True. It seems Turkey will not do anything or agree to anything if they dont somehow get something in return. I wonder what they really got, for letting sweden join Nato. Plus they are clearly playing both sides. I get that they have some strategic value with their place in the world. Not always, during the Mustafa Kemal Ataturk period Turkey turned toward the West and he wanted to as he said face Europe and away from the Middle East. That all ended when Erdogan was elected some 20 Plus years ago and had a lot to do with the purge of the Turkish Military a few years ago by Erdogan. Under Ataturk the military had a special place in making sure the constitution was followed. That ended with the Purge.

    Minehunters are essential for keeping the risks for commercial shipping on a relatively tolerable level. Minehunting and other mine countermeasures allow keeping the food transport route from Ukraine open. Having floating mines on shipping routes will increase the possibility of mines hitting civilian cargo ships, loss of life. This is not just a problem for Ukraine, but skyrocketing shipping insurance costs could make commercial shipping untenable also for some other Black Sea nations, including Türkiye and Russia.

      For America, the war in Gaza is way more important than Ukraine. It's destabilizing our politics and there needs to be an end to it soon and the 2 state solution moving forward. Whether Hamas or Netanyahu and the current government will be part of a solution, who knows, that's up to them but we need peace because the US is very exposed geopolitically in that war. Ukraine is tragic but Russia poses no threat to the US, they are a regional power.
      So I would just say, if what happens in Gaza doesn't matter to Europeans, maybe Ukraine shouldn't matter to the US. This also goes for Taiwan, if it's important for the US, it better be important for Europe. None of this, oh it's tragic but not our issue.

    If the minehunters (small ships) are allowed passage via the Bosphorus, then the argument and treaties that prevent Russia replenishing the Black Sea Fleet by blocking passage of the Bosphorus may be argued to have been broken. Russia may then consider forcing passage to bolster its own fleet. The minehunters are small vessels and it may be that some other route may be practical.

    I'm a Ukraine supporter but I also recognise the complexities here. The Montreux Convention has been around since 1936 and prevents warships of belligerent states transiting. It stopped Germany sending U-boats into the Black Sea during WW2 (the Germans actually transported several U-boats in pieces by rail and reassembled them in Romania because of it!). I wouldn't be surprised if mine hunters being relatively small displacement could reach Ukraine and eventually the Black Sea by inland waterways though that would probably require Hungarian co-operation.
    It's a a bit of a stretch to expect treaties to only work when in your perceived favour.

As long as he's in NATO, he can't do as he pleases... although he's already trying (buying S-400s is one thing) and I think he's seriously risking an exit, for his own gain. Well he needs Putin's billions to keep his economy afloat, that same economy he wrecked with sheer mismanagement. Putin's bailing him out. He does favors in return.
      What kind of ally is that? He's not an ally, I can tell you that. Suppose Russia invades Estonia, a fledgling democracy. • @lilbubz2803
    @lilbubz2803 Před 4 měsíci +124

    The irony is that those mine sweepers, in the long run, would actually save both Russian and Ukrainian lives.
    The Black sea is prone to severe weather storms that result in tremendous waves throughout the entirety of the Black Sea. We actually saw this happen recently when Russia's sea defences along Crimea where swept away in late 2023.
    That severe weather problem is going to eventually result in a loose mine, or an unlucky ship, accidently detonating one of the many hundreds of mines currently planted there.
    The less sea mines there are in the Black Sea, the better it will be for everyone. For Ukrainians, Russians, and the world. Ukraine and Russia aren't the only ones who use those shipping routs, and they aren't the only countries in the Black Sea.

      Speaker Johnson is a disgrace and has to go. He is the obstructionist as there are votes among both parties to support another aid package to Ukraine. I was a teenager in the 80's when Russia was the big bugaboo. The 80's was the age of bunker building and the Red Threat. Now, our hand-me-down older generation weaponry is on the battlefield being used by Ukranians to hold the line....for 2 years now. Repeating for the cheap seats: Our Old Hand-Me-Down weaponry is holding the line against Putin's Russia in a conflict that is clearly critical for Putin's personal survival. Russia is too corrupt to effectively prosecute the war, from the embezzlement of their military commanders and waste and theft of resources...."they're not sending their best" to paraphrase one of our Ex-Presidents. Now is the time to Hit and Hit Hard. We shouldn't be holding back. Much of the money Congress allocates for the fight in Ukraine is actually used to build the next generation of weaponry here in the US, the weapons that they'll see for the first time if we have to go in with NATO. If Trump is not elected again, there is no doubt in my mind that a US-NATO response is coming if Russia starts "line-stepping" into NATO territories. We didn't maintain that investment for generations for nothing. If you are in the US, call your Republican Reps and tell them that Speaker Johnson needs to act and allow the vote or get the "H" out of the way. If he's not up to the job, he can resign to "spend more time with his family".

Russians are abandoning equipment because they can't repair it. No money, no parts, decades of brain drain of young talented people. That's what happens when you cannibalize yourself. It wasn't a secret Turkey will block mine-hunters delivery to Ukraine because of the convention. If responsible parties are a bit more clever, they're a simple way: STEP 1. UK send mine-hunters to Romania. STEP 2. Romania register it as a part of own Navy. STEP 3. Romania donate the mine-hunters to Ukraine. In this scenario Turkey CAN'T DO NOTHING!

      Likely it was a test to see what Turkey would do… to try and force them to give up their Russia addiction. @@airfight10 You're NOT right. The convention doesn't allow passing for military ships (and cargoes) with destination for one of the countries participating in the war. Not any! Romania in this case is NOT participating in the war and Turkey wouldn't be able to block those mine-hunters.

But I think that kind o test is a bit meaningless, because it's easy to predict what they will do. Anyway, there are many different ways to deliver those ships to Ukraine. Through Danube river, for example, since those are not so big ships.

    • @saberint
      @saberint Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@tripspointcom7062 completely agree that it was a bit of a pointless exercise… but sometimes you still have to test. And yep, there are ways around and hopefully they will get them there soon. There is also another interesting aspect to see if Turkey would count the minesweepers as military or because they are primarily defensive ships and they would also help Turkey, Turkey might have allowed them through. Yes, Turkey need to get on with deciding what side of the fence they are on and take the pros and cons of that choice.

    There is a quite braindead conservative faction in the west, especially in US which is trying to preserve "interests of US and it's allies" which inludes israel, arabic kingdoms etc and because of that they see Turkey as a threat. Turkish soft power is insanely higher than known by the western public, Turkish armed forces could freely operate in so many countries from Libya to Afghanistan or Somalia where western coalition struggle a lot or even had to run in quite terrible conditions. For example taliban actually asked Turkish forces to stay and control some critical infrastructure including international airports as they didn't have skilled personel to do so and Turkish forces aren't seen as "crusader invaders" by Afghan people but Turkey refused and withdrew from Afghanistan as well. No other country in entire western alliance has such a soft power in middle east and that's exactly why Turkey is a threat in the region shared with israelis and arab kings and princes! You can see it everywhere if you look closely, "humanist" western countries issuing embargoes on Turkey for "deterring democracy" while same western countries continue selling arms to arabic kingdoms. Arab spring miserably failed in all arabic countries expect Libya alone where Turkey intervened and saved Libyan people elected government while France, Egypt, saudis etc supporting warlord haftar, simply because they know a democratic government would be pro-Turkish for sure. They keep re-writing history and warming over "Armenian genocide" in last two decades just purely reducing Turkish soft power. In their eyes Turkey is already an enemy, against their interests in the region at least so they act accordingly. Even after regime changes in Turkey absolutely nothing will change, Turkey can't stay isolationist anymore because we experienced quite terrible damage from recent wars especially Syrian war even if we stayed out of it as long as possible. In future Turkey will intervene more and more regardless which party is ruling and that's exactly what they fear and trying to prevent...

      @c.s.4273"Warming over Armenian genocide". What's wrong with telling the truth about the Turkish made genocide over 100 years ago that everyone knows well? On historical TV channels in my country these things are discussed in detail and no one blames contemporary Turkey for it. Do you really think that lies and denial will enhance Turkey's "soft power"?? Nope. It only harms and ridicules its image as a weak and pathetic country unable to face its own history. If you do not want to admit genocide in your history it just means that you still consider genocide as a legitimized means of "solving problems".
      Adding the gradual deterioration of Ataturk's legacy , Turkey is still alienating by itself from the West confirming how foreign, unpredictable and basically hostile it is to the West with its odd Ottoman phantom pains.
      Anyway, your whole post confirms it. The only strange thing is that you yourself seem not aware of it.

    The single best way to avoid NATO having to go to war with Russia is to give Ukraine everything it needs to win. NATO's current strategy of bleeding Russia has been very effective. It simply needs to increase military aid to Ukraine and Russia can break this year. If it maintains 2023 levels of military aid, give it 1-2 years for Russia to break. Russia's military has proven that it cannot win on the battlefield. It's far too weak.

      @@nadiasawicki4108 This is all true. If NATO simply gave Ukraine everything it asked for, this war might well be over now. But that's not what happened. And more importantly for Russia, is Russia is currently experiencing the worst possible outcome. It's stuck in an attrition fight against a nation with unbreakable will. Russia has lost more than 6k tanks, 362k Russian KIA, over 11k apcs, coming up on 9k destroyed artillery systems, etc. This is the last year of the Russian war machine. The vaunted Soviet stockpile is being permanently retired.
      At the current trajectory of the war, Ukraine will win but sustain higher losses than it would otherwise need to if the West just went all in. After the Russian military is strategically defeated in Ukraine, the Russian Federation will collapse in on itself and fracture into tiny nation states. Expect China to gobble up Manchuria as payback for the Century of Humiliation.
