I've always been curious about something, is there really much of a difference between an extremely cheap paddle and an extremely expensive paddle? In this video, I dive into all the nitty-gritty details and explain what the main differences are.

I'd be interested in seeing the difference between a $50 paddle and a $150-$200 paddle.
Thank you!! This helped a lot in figuring out how to start out with what paddle!
Would love to see more of your gameplay. Maybe a match or 3 in the future,
Thanks. Its not hard to imagine that wood vs graphite would behave differently. But what separates paddles in not such extreme price points. Is it weight or the surface of face? What gives some paddles a larger sweet spot than others? What are the differences that I should be looking for?
I would be interested in seeing some blind tests on paddles. Playing with several different paddles without knowing who they were made by. I think knowing the cost and maker has an affect on how good or weak that we think the paddle is.
I was thinking about doing this as well. But one of you guys would have to send them to me!!
How will you hide the branding? Lol
Love watching you play!! More game play videos coming??
Possibly!
I'd like to see the difference in a $30 paddle vs your $200 paddle that use mostly the same material.
I've been thinking a lot about pros and their paddles: if sponsorship and money didn't have an influence, what paddle would they choose. Conversely, if you made all of the pros use the same paddle, would that affect the results? I suspect, beyond the difference between wood or really cheap paddles, if you gave a pro any $80+ paddle, they would dominate regardless.
Ben Johns and Zane are crushing with the 100 dollar Franklin.
Complaining about a heavy paddle? Pfft. I play tennis competitively (45+) and been thinking about trying pickleball. I play with a 13 oz. racquet in tennis which is about as heavy as it gets with modern racquets. Of course, I started playing when wooden racquets were still in vogue. I hate light racquets. I'll probably try wood and composite paddles but I am NOT dropping $200 on a paddle.
Upfront I am new to the game and don't compete. I found an ONYX woody in my local dept store ($20) and bought it on a lark. It is very heavy but not poorly made. Pros: I like the wooden handle w/ no tape. Has rough paint making spin easy. Good for the long shots. Cons: A lack of finesse, as noted, really have to temper the swing. Wears on the arm. Does not serve as well.
It does throw off my regular opponents when I switch paddles. And sounds wicked! Variety is the spice of life.
But, bragging rights to win with the wooden paddle. Thatâs Gold Jerry!
.great video.........beginner...played once...and fell in love with game...for someone like myself who wants to rapidly improve....what raquet would you recommend....one with texture for topspin... and what weight and material would you recommend...graphite?(with quick reflexes and quick hands(table tennis)...should i get one slightly heavier to slow my hands down....or go with lighter and go with speed...any recommendation would be appreciated
.preferably no more then 100 dollars...unless u recommend going with a higher quality
How many paddles should a good player own? Do you own paddles based on playing conditions, an opponentâs style, or your own mood for that day? I would think 3 or 4 types/brands/shapes would be a reachable goal. Thanks! đ
Some people have a separate paddle for singles and doubles, but I would stick to just 1 or 2 different ones. Different shapes or things too different will mess you up going back and forth. Hone and master 1 paddle. I like to have multiple of the same paddle and I add lead tape to one of them to adjust its playing characteristics. Also having 2 of the same is nice if its hot out and the grip on one gets slippery.
Would you be interested in doing a paddle review for us too lol? Some says our $30 paddle outperform their $90 paddle
Which net is that and where do they sell 200 dollar paddles
I picked up the Paddletek tempest wave 2 the other day, have you had a chance to try it yet? I know you were a big fan of the original.
Surprisingly, I still haven't tried the new version. I'm sure it's great though.
Pickleball Kitchen worth a try if you ever get the chance! Love the videos by the way. I am a big fan of your paddle reviews and would love to see more of them. Cheers.
Is it the wood vs plastic?
Hi! What is main difference between Graphite Paddles and Composite Paddles, please?
A composite paddle is just a paddle that's made of multiple parts that come together to make the paddle. A graphite paddle just means that the face of the paddle is made of graphite.
I wish you'd compare a $119 paddle and the Vanguard! also the Gearbox CP7 vs Vanguard since its half the price and just as nice
CP7 is a better paddle than the Vanguard. The Vanguard is soft. Garbage garbage overpriced paddle.
Good video but what about a $50 or $100 paddle compared to a $200 paddle?
Ben Johns paddle and everything Gearbox puts out is better than the Vanguard.
Prices are skyrocketing, what I could by for $17.99 a few months ago is approaching $50 now. Getting as expensive as some of the regular pickleball rackets now
I'm more curious of the difference between your $200 paddle to say a Prince Response Pro or even its predecessor Selkirk AMPED model which are around $50-$70 less in price.
Could also try the 30$ polycarbonate paddles on Amazon.
@@_fisher_2_ Ohhh that's a great idea.
Since I did that Vanguard review, I was able to try out that paddle quite a bit. I could tell that there was a difference in quality, but the difference in performance is so hard to say. Some of it is subjective since I play so much better with my Prince. I'll continue thinking on it.
@@PickleballKitchen Thanks for taking the time to reply. I recall from your Vanguard video you got the paddle free from Selkirk. If you play so much better with your Prince, I trust you wouldn't pay $200 out of pocket for the Vanguard.
My pleasure! And yes, thatâs correct. I was fire for the rest of the night with my Prince! Fun night, I love Pickleball!
Ok, I see what you were trying to do, but how about an economical $20-30 composite paddle like the ones found on Amazon or eBay? I think that would be a closer comparison than two completely different type of materials like wood and composite type. Anyway, my two cents, and good video overall.
Thanks and yeah this is the 2nd time Iâve gotten this suggestion so I think Iâll make it happen. Thanks for stopping by.
@@PickleballKitchen Order a few of the highest rated cheap ones (Niupipo MXseries, HyperFeather, AmazinAces) and put them against each other in video #1. Take the winner and put it against a couple of your current favorites in video #2. Maybe it can earn a spot on your shelf :) I'm a tennis player looking to buy my first paddle and this would be of interest to me.
I am using a $40 Gamma Fusion 2.0 paddle (which I paid $5 at Daily Deals), and I play better than any players out there! Is there an explanation for that?
How does the $200 paddle compare to a $30 graphite paddle? Still significantly better?
Barrett, I'd love to see you compare the vanguard to the amped paddles with drills. I'm curious if there's a measurable difference there. This is what everyone at my court has been wondering!
Have you seen my vanguard review? That may help to answer a few questions. I'd be happy to help your group out. Please let me know what I can do to help!
i love your videos!
Thanks!
What about a $50 one vs a $150 one, big difference?
I am a 3.9 dupr player with my primary paddle... and a 3.8 player using my daughter's very small, light, and cheap paddle... and somewhere in the middle with any other paddle.
good commentary
looks like the whole surface of this wooden paddle is sweet spot ?)
usapa changed paddle rules to sell paddles. A great player could destroy any goon with a 200 dollar paddle blindfolded
I used a nice paddle and tried a wooden paddle, thinking my playing level would decline. (that is what all the pickleball people tell you). Well my overall game actually improved. I will never be a pro player. Since it is what works best with your ability. Maybe many people would play better with a wooden paddle.
There are so many things that your blaming. 1.you are not use to it and your use to ultra light paddles. I saw a few times out of reach because no footwork. Take the $10 paddle and play a month with it and see the deference.
Michael Smith Sr maybe before you comment learn to spell also he only blamed the paddle jokingly most of the time
How timely. I do understand that mechanics are more important than paddle, but still love to try different ones. Up here on the opposite side of the country, (ND), we play inside. Just started playing outside very recently. I prefer the Tempest Wave inside. But outside, I prefer the Encore Pro. Quite abruptly, I had to change to the Tempest wave, outdoor, because the balls were travelling short. So I just reviewed your vid on balls - especially the part about softening with age. So yeah, as the outdoor ball softened, I noticed a paddle difference and had to switch to the 'soft ball?' paddle. Love your work.
That makes sense, thanks for your comment!
Honestly it's not the paddle it's the player, watching video of your play you are using too much wrist. When you say there's no feel in the paddle is funny because wood paddles provide solid consistent ball response. You're better off saying you don't know how to play with or handle the weight of a wood paddle. I guarantee if you train with that wood paddle for a week you will see significant improvement in your game.
BINGO!
Hi. That being said, which paddle do you recommend
@@mlbsilva4433 if someone is telling you a certain paddle is the best they are lying to you or trying sell you something. Everyone is different, you need to try paddles to see what best fits you. Look for paddle brand ambassadors.
@@BL-nice thank you
intresting, I am currently learning /practicing with a wood paddle and was thinking about upgrading to mid-priced range graphite paddle.
Yea, but the Selkirk doesnât have that nifty strap.
The $10 is an excellent paddle to train on.
Guess it depends on how good the player is. A good player with a cheap paddle and beat a crappy player with a high end paddle. Same it true most things ping pong, golf, running, wood working, music, etc.
U got 8 paddles?? Sell me one??
shotta flow 3
As an FYI you're not permitted To stand in the kitchen :)
I am curois if anyone has play tested various wood paddles.
Feedback - pause the gameplay to do a play by play instead of just saying âweâre going to talk about thatâ over and over again. Just say what you have to say and move on.
But did you win with the 200$ paddle?
He put some text on the bottom that they lost 10-12.
FineâŠ.Iâll buy a $200 paddle
What's better, a $50 Timex or a $5000 Rolex? The ugly mathematical reality between the two polar extreme different paddles in the video is game play did NOT improve 20X with the more expensive paddle!
Way too long. Decent review but way too long said the same thing a over and over. Review was way too long.
